DescriptionIn the wake of the news this week of Pope Francis' death, I immediately wondered what we could do here at Better Preach to honor his legacy, teaching and example - particularly around Preaching. For a while I wanted to do a dive into his first major letter to the Church, the Joy of the Gospel, from 2013, and look closely at his lengthy section in that document on homiletics. And thanks to Fr. Craig Vasek, who joined me way back in the beginning on episode 2 of Better Preach, he agreed to join me again at the last minute here to look back at Pope Francis' longest magisterial teaching on Preaching. Father Craig Vasek currently serves as pastor of St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Thief River Falls, Minnesota. Ordained in 2010 as a priest of the Diocese of Crookston, Minnesota, Fr. Vasek is a graduate of the Pontifical North American College in Vatican City, having obtained a Licentiate of Sacred Theology in 2011. Father Vasek has worked extensively with the Missionaries of Charity of Saint Teresa of Calcutta in Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. He has produced works on the topics of Scripture and the Spiritual Life, and served as Specialist for the National Eucharist Revival with the US Conference of Catholic Bishops.Check out Fr. In this episode of On Mission, Sarah Harrigan Scalfaro, Chris Pierno, and Fr. Frank Donio, S.A.C. are joined by Deacon Mark Krejci of the Diocese of Crookston to discuss the third year of the Eucharistic Revival, Year of Mission. This is an exciting new season of the Revival movement. The Holy Spirit has enkindled a missionary fire in the heart of our nation, and now he is sending out every member of the Church to spread the Good News—sharing the gift of our Eucharistic Lord with those on the margins. And YOU are invited to be a part of it! Download the Year of Mission Playbook here. We are all called to evangelize, and thanks to the gift of the Holy Spirit, we are well-equipped for this mission. It may not mean spreading the Gospel in a foreign land or going door-to-door with the Good News—and it may require overcoming some fears—but the Lord is asking each of us to step out of our comfort zone and evangelize one-on-one. There is someone in your life right now whom Jesus longs to call to himself. He wants to spark a relationship with them and bless them with his sacraments. In this Year of Mission, Catholics across the U.S. are saying “yes” to a special form of heart-to-heart accompaniment called the Walk With One initiative. This is your opportunity to be God's instrument in the life of another person. Imagine how our families, neighborhoods, and country will be transformed if every active Catholic answers this call! At the start of every “Preach” episode, we state the mission of the show: “We take you into the minds and hearts of some of the finest preachers in the Catholic Church; we listen to their homilies, learn what makes them great and draw inspiration to keep preaching the Good News.” This mission informed our decision to send host Ricardo da Silva, S.J., to the National Eucharistic Congress, a historic event—the first of its kind in 83 years—that took place in Indianapolis, Ind., from July 17-21. On this episode of “Preach,” Ricardo reflects on his experience attending the congress and the rich tapestry of preaching styles he experienced while there. From homilies by bishops like Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, the pope's envoy to the congress; Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York and Bishop Andrew Cozzens of Crookston, Minn., to keynote addresses and breakout sessions led by notable speakers such as Gloria Purvis, the Rev. Mike Schmitz and Mother Olga of the Sacred Heart, he gained a deeper understanding of the art of preaching and its power to inspire and transform. Joining him is Paul Shelton, S.J., a fellow Jesuit priest who was one of three Jesuits chosen as Eucharistic preachers for the National Eucharistic Revival and was also at the congress. Paul also serves as the provincial's assistant for vocations in the Midwest Province. Together, they discuss their takeaways from this momentous occasion in the life of the U.S. church. In this episode of On Mission, Chris Pierno, Kate Fowler, and Fr. Frank Donio, S.A.C., are joined by Deacon Mark Krejci, the Director of the Diaconate for the Diocese of Crookston, Minnesota, to discuss the diaconate and its role within the Church. The word deacon means “servant”. The diaconate has its origins in the Old Testament with Ancient Israel and one of the first deacons of the Church was St. Stephen in the first century. Jesus modeled the deacon when he washed the feet of the Apostles at the Last Supper. The deacon's ministry has three dimensions: liturgy, word and service. At the liturgy, he assists the bishop and priests. At the Mass, the deacon proclaims the Gospel, may be invited to preach the homily, and assists at the altar. A deacon is meant to proclaim the Gospel in every area of his life. All are called to do the same in their own particular Vocation in life. Queen Drea of St. Paul describes herself as a sound alchemist. She loves the innovative, community-centered performances of Ananya Dance Theatre. The theme for this fall's performance is processionals, which can both celebrate life and disrupt its flow when they take the form of protests. Ananya Dance Theater investigated its theme by performing several processionals in the Twin Cities this summer; Queen Drea had the opportunity to be involved with one during the George Floyd memorial service in May. She looks forward to seeing how that idea has developed into a staged dance show, marked by interruption, innovation and liberation. Queen Drea appreciates that Ananya Dance Theatre's works involve a confluence of artists alongside the dancers, adding, “Every year, I go, and there's just something unexpected.” “Michhil Amra: We Are the Procession!” plays Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at The O'Shaughnessy at St. Catherine University in St. Paul. Zoe Cinel, curator at Rochester Art Center, recently saw a striking exhibit in Winona. “Googled Earth: Through a Looking Glass” is the work of artists Patrick Lichty of Winona State University and Negin Ehtesabian, who lives in Iran. The artists, who are married, have never been able to visit each other's home countries. As they await visas, they use Google Maps and virtual reality to share their homes. This exhibit shares that experience with viewers through a combination of mixed media and virtual reality. One pair of mixed media prints by Ehtesabian, for example, hang facing each other on walls, depicting images and symbols from the U.S. and Iran, respectively. Cinel was particularly intrigued by a series of tapestries created using imagery from the geography where both artists have lived. She says the nontraditional approach to a traditional craft looks like “if glitch art had a baby with a rug.” Overall, Cinel appreciated the personal, colorful show that “speaks about borders and humans at the same time.” “Googled Earth: Through a Looking Glass” is up until Oct. 4 at the Watkins Gallery at Winona State University. David DeBlieck teaches dance in the theater department of the College of St Benedict and St John's University. He loves the work of Sod House Theater, a Twin Cities-based company whose traveling annual productions invite audiences to engage with the space around them. Their current show “Table” integrates dinner — created by local chefs from local ingredients — and a show. Directed by Sarah Agnew, whose traveling food-centered shows have included “Arla Mae's Booyah Wagon,” the show is performed by an all-female cast who also serve as wait staff for the meal. It's an interactive show served up in courses, and DeBlieck looks forward to gathering with friends at the Hallock performance Saturday to enjoy time around a table. Related Art Hounds: Comedy on the farm and in town “Table” runs through Oct. 1 in various communities across the state, including in Crookston, Minn., Sept. 21 in Waseca, Minn., Sept. 28, and in Rochester, Minn., Oct. 1. Please note that some performances have sold out.
Hello and welcome to the ZimmCast. I'm Chuck Zimmerman. Last week the Ag Innovation Campus held its grand opening in Crookston, MN. You can see lots of photos and interviews in the virtual newsroom I published on AgNewsWire.com. I'm going to share some of those interviews in the episode. Before getting to the AIC facility I met a group of farmers and other ag leaders in Fargo, ND to tour the Northern Crops Institute. This is a collaborative effort among Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota to support the promotion and market development of crops grown in this four-state region and it is situated on the campus of North Dakota State University, in Fargo. I'll share my interview with Mark Jirik, Director, who will describe the unique work they do there. After that we got on a bus and traveled to the Riverview Waukon Dairy where I met David Yost who will provide an overview of the large and very impressive facility they have built. Then we moved on to Crookston, MN to the Ag Innovation Campus. We had presentations from a variety of people who have played a part in the success of reaching phase one of the facility and a ribbon cutting. I talked with several leaders about the work that the AIC will do to deliver crops and processing technologies from bench top to commercialization. Think of the term, crush facility, and you'll hear more about this staring with Tom Slunecka, Acting AIC CEO. Next we'll hear from Mike Skaug, AIC Board Member. Finally in this episode you can hear from the AIC Plant Manger, Kent Meyers. That's the ZimmCast for this week. I hope you enjoyed it and thank you for listening.

What is a Eucharistic Missionary and why should consider becoming one? Bishop Andrew Cozzens, from the Diocese of Crookston, Minnesota, addressing the Knights of Columbus at the 140th Supreme Convention, describes the vital role of missionary work in the National Eucharistic Revival and encourages everyone to prayerfully consider how the Holy Spirit is calling us to participate in this National movement. DescriptionAs the three year Eucharistic Revival began in 2022 in the U S. 50 different Catholic priests from around the country. We're commissioned and sent to preach: to announce again to the church that Jesus is Lord and that a perpetual sign of his love and mercy has been given to the church through the gift of his real presence in the Eucharist. When Jesus said just before he ascended into heaven, that he would be with us always. He meant it. Both in his personal ministry as a Bishop and as the head of the Eucharistic revival, my guest today on the podcast, Bishop Andrew Cozzens has great hope that this three-year journey isn't about starting a program, but rather about starting a fire; a fire of faith in Jesus Christ that will spread across the country and well into the future. In our conversation today, we discussed everything from the connection between preaching and belief in Jesus' real presence in the Eucharist, the unique history of Eucharistic congresses in America, what's on his bookshelf this month and why he doesn't keep old homilies on file. Bishop Andrew Cozzens, a proud graduate of Benedictine college in Atchison, KS served as a missionary for young people with both Twin Cities based NET ministries and the national college ministry Saint Paul's Outreach before entering seminary. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis in 1997. On December 6th, 2021, he was installed as the eighth Bishop of the Diocese of Crookston in northern Minnesota. He currently serves as the chair of the USCCB committee on evangelization and catechesis, where he has been tasked by the bishops with leading a three-year national Eucharistic Revival, which seeks to impact the U S church at every level strengthening Eucharistic belief and practice. For more information on the Eucharistic Revival - check out this link LinksFor more information about the Better Preach Podcast visit: www.ryanohara.org/betterpreachBetter Preach Podcast is now on YouTube.
