They all float down here. Now that It: Welcome To Derry, the prequel to Andy Muschietti's It Chapter One and It Chapter Two, has finished its eight-episode run, the Empire Podcast has teamed up with Warner Bros. to bring you a special episode in which Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, and James Dyer conquer their fears of clowns, spiders, and spider-clowns just long enough to talk about the Andy Muschietti/Barbara Muschietti/Jason Fuchs-created show, its Stephen King connections, its brand new characters, its setting (1962 Derry, Maine), and, of course, Bill Skarsgård's Pennywise, The Dancing Clown, who's back for another bout of bloody mayhem. While not a spoiler special, our very own Losers Club do delve into the show's major twists and turns, so if you haven't seen all eight episodes, they're available to buy now on digital platforms, or you can pre-order them on DVD, Blu-ray, 4K UHD or steelbook from warnerbros.co.uk
On this week's show DJ Briggs from Brightside Home Theater fills in for Braden who is away on business. We ask DJ to give us his opinion on using a large format TV as a replacement for a projector. We also read your emails and take a look at the week's news. News: LG will debut its first Micro RGB television at CES Local ABC, CBS, FOX, & NBC Stations Are Demanding Up to a 50% Price Hike for Cable TV Customers WBD board recommends rejection of Paramount's takeover bid Other: YouTube TV Wants to Unbundle the Cable Package That Streamers Were Meant to Kill in the First Place Tailwind Meross Garage Door Opener HT Guys Amazon List Swapping a projector for a 100" TV Jon Taylor recently purchased a TCL 98QM7K (2025 model, QD-Mini LED QLED with Google TV) during Black Friday for $1,999.99 (50% off the $3,999.99 retail price). After using it for a couple of weeks in his basement home theater (replacing an older 82" Samsung and supplementing a projector setup), he shares highly positive impressions. Key Highlights: Size and Installation: The 98" screen is enormous and immersive. Delivery and installation (included from Best Buy) went smoothly, though modifications to basement stairs were needed to fit the massive box. Picture Quality: Exceptional deep blacks (best non-OLED he's seen, rivaling his old Panasonic plasma), vibrant colors, and strong contrast. Upscaling of lower-resolution content (720p/1080p from cable, Blu-ray, streaming) is excellent. 4K sources, including Ultra HD Blu-ray and YouTube, look stunning with minimal motion blur. Performance Across Sources: Built-in Google TV streaming: Clear and smooth. Roku Premier: Deep blacks and popping colors. Standout: Apple TV 4K shines brightest, leveraging Dolby Vision for an incredibly vivid, "popping" image—far superior to non-Dolby Vision devices on his previous Samsung. Gaming and Features: 144Hz refresh rate delivers outstanding performance with low motion lag. Fun feature: Displays four simultaneous 48" screens for NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube TV. Observations: Large size exposes weaknesses in poor cable signals (fixed by rerouting). He notes TCL (and Hisense) are seriously challenging premium brands (Samsung, LG, Sony) with high-end specs at budget prices, earning praise from reviewers like RTINGS.com. Jon historically preferred established brands for reliability but now sees TCL/Hisense as the new value leaders, similar to how Samsung/LG rose decades ago. He recommends checking out the latest high-end TCL models, especially for large sizes where premium brands were too expensive for him. He's also considering switching from Verizon Fios to a streaming TV service to cut costs. Overall, Jon is thrilled with the TV's performance and value, calling it a "force to be reckoned with."

Roger and Evil tear into a massive Patreon haul loaded with everything from shirts and candy to action figures, soda, and even filet mignon steaks! But the good vibes don't last long… Walmart's barren Blu-ray shelves set them off on a righteous rant about the death of physical media. Bundle up, my spookies—this week's This Week in Horror History digs into Christmas horror movies, winter ghost stories, and festive frights from December 15–21. We're hanging the stockings and turning off the lights as we revisit the classics that made the holidays just a little more terrifying. We kick things off with Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein (1974), a black-and-white horror-comedy love letter to the Universal Monsters era. It proved that audiences were happy to unwrap creepy laughs during the holiday season, turning a modest budget into a massive hit and cementing itself as a cozy winter comfort watch for monster kids everywhere. From there, we head into the snow-choked terror of Bob Clark's Black Christmas (1974)—the grim, stalker-in-the-attic slasher that helped invent the blueprint for holiday horror slashers. Killer POV shots, obscene phone calls, sorority sisters in danger, and a cozy Christmas setting turned sinister make it a must-watch Christmas horror movie for anyone who likes their tinsel tangled with blood. We then unwrap some Christmas horror gaming with the PS1-style indie nightmare Christmas Massacre, where retro graphics, a whispering Christmas tree, and a deeply disturbed killer turn nostalgic winter vibes into something nasty and unforgettable. If you're into indie horror games, lo-fi visuals, and brutally mean Christmas horror, this one belongs on your December playlist. For fans of analog horror and late-night weirdness, we shine a frosty spotlight on Local 58's Real Sleep—a fake infomercial that slowly mutates into something cosmic, invasive, and deeply wrong. It's perfect for those long, cold nights where the TV glow is the only light in the room. Our Deep-Cut Spotlight settles on Ghost Story (1981), a wintry ghost tale about regret, buried secrets, and a haunting that refuses to stay in the past. Legendary performances and snow-dusted atmosphere make it an ideal December ghost story to curl up with while the wind howls outside and the Christmas lights flicker.Along the way, we celebrate horror icons with birthdays this week, revisit the seismic impact of Wes Craven's Scream (1996) as a late-December slasher staple, and build you a Christmas horror watchlist loaded with slashers, ghost stories, analog nightmares, and cold-weather horror comfort films.Where to watch this week's picks (U.S.):Black Christmas (1974) – Currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Peacock, Shudder, AMC+ and more, and also free with ads on platforms like Tubi and The Roku Channel. Ghost Story (1981) – Streaming on Amazon Prime Video (including Prime with ads), with digital rent/buy options on Amazon, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home. Christmas Massacre (Game) – Available digitally on Steam, GOG, PlayStation, Xbox, and directly from the Puppet Combo store for PC collectors. Young Frankenstein (1974) – As of this week it's not on major subscription services in the U.S.; your best bet is grabbing a digital copy or Blu-ray from retailers like Amazon and other disc shops. Hit play on this episode of This Week in Horror History for a Christmas horror history lesson you can turn directly into a holiday horror movie night—plus the details on our sponsor's special seasonal deal.Support the show and get a tasty energy drink without the crash at AspireDrinks.com and get 25% off with promo code SPOOKY at checkout!

They explored a website for a Turbine release and discovered Etsy listings for 3D-printed Hellraiser prop replicas. José planned to add a link to the Etsy shop to the news page. Hellraiser Lament and Podcast Updates The team discussed the Hellraiser 2022 lament configurations and a potential impact on a shop owner. They reviewed updates on Simon Vanford and Nicholas Vince, including an upcoming podcast appearance. José and Ryan expressed frustration about the complexity of coordinating with various platforms and people for episode planning. They also discussed an Ultra HD Blu-ray release, noting its region-free status and the challenges of international shipping. The conversation concluded with a brief mention of starting to record episode 518 of the Clive Barker Podcast. Clive Barker Book and Blu-ray News Ryan and José discussed two main topics: a book sweep contest offering autographed Clive Barker books, and the announcement of Hellraiser 2022 on Blu-ray. They noted that Book Sweeps was running a contest to win 10 autographed books, including one by Clive Barker, and shared their own experiences with collecting signed editions. Regarding Hellraiser, they reported that a German website was offering a steelbook Blu-ray edition priced at 34.99 euros, which included Ultra HD and bonus features, though they expressed uncertainty about international shipping and customs costs. Hellraiser 4K Release Discussion Ryan and José discussed the upcoming 4K Ultra HD release of Hellraiser, which will include multiple covers, a 56-page booklet, and exclusive bonus materials. They admired the artwork and discussed the different versions available, including steelbooks and media books. José mentioned receiving a private commission poster for Hellbound and expressed interest in obtaining a copy of the Hellraiser release. They also briefly touched on the recent merger of Shout Factory and Filmrise, and discussed the lack of a physical release for Hellraiser in the United States. Etsy Puzzle Boxes and Podcast José shared information about a vendor on Etsy selling various geometric puzzle box configurations, including the Leviathan, Lament, and other shapes, with prices ranging from $65. Ryan and José discussed the different shapes and sizes of the boxes. José also mentioned that Simon Bamford would be appearing on the Scream Princess Podcast on Christmas Eve, where he would discuss his role in the upcoming movie and potentially share new stories from his time in Romania. Rawhead Rex Project Updates Ryan and José discussed upcoming projects related to Rawhead Rex, including a short story, graphic novel, and audio commentary, scheduled for release in 2025 and 2026. They expressed gratitude to Patreon members and sponsors and confirmed that Bennett had responded to the questionnaire. José mentioned a call from Michael Plumities about his upcoming book release and potential podcast appearance, which Ryan approved. They also noted the completion of Kickstarter rewards and the need to finalize details for the second printing of the book. Book Adaptation Project Discussion José and Ryan discussed a book project that started as a TV show script, became a novel, then a graphic novel, and is now returning to being a novel. José mentioned that the author is working on a second book and plans to adapt the first book into a graphic novel. They agreed to schedule an interview with the author around January or February, allowing Ryan time to read the book first. José noted that the author is open to discussing the connection between his work and "Nightbreed," though they want to avoid making it seem too derivative. Rawhead Rex Episode Postponed Ryan and José discussed that they would inform Ed that they would not be doing a Rawhead Rex episode this week due to David's absence, opting instead to produce a news episode. They also talked about how the movie adaptation of Rawhead Rex significantly changed the story, including altering the city's name and the characters' backgrounds. José mentioned finding some interesting information about the original art sketches and the reasons behind Eclipse Comics' closure, and planned to share these findings with Ryan. Rawhead Rex Artwork Analysis José and Ryan discussed the artwork for Rawhead Rex, including a fan-made poster for $25 and the challenges of finding certain websites. They analyzed the movie's design choices, noting the unnecessary armor and boots that obscured the character's human shape. José shared a blog post explaining why the Rawhead Rex graphic novel was never made, involving Neil Gaiman and a contract issue. They also briefly touched on José's work on the Barcocast book. Second Printing ISBN and Barcode Discussion José and Ryan discussed a second printing for multiple formats of a book, including Apple Books, Kindle, paperback, and hardcover, each requiring specific ISBNs and barcodes. They agreed on a cost of around $350 for the ISBNs and barcodes. José mentioned needing to save a document and continue working on the second print, while Ryan planned to have dinner and address malware issues on the website. They agreed to continue discussions later in the week about further steps. Book Second Edition Planning Meeting José and Ryan discussed the second edition of a book, including corrections and distribution across various platforms. They reviewed recent sales data from KDP and considered the financial implications of the second printing. They agreed to reschedule a meeting with David to the 17th and planned to review additional information about ISPNs.

Even though hip-hop music is the basis for all my record collecting, I have trouble staying up on all the new releases these days as I drift more and more into jazz and other musical forms. Shout out to my guy Noah for keeping me as informed as possible about new releases! These are a few tracks that have gotten a lot of repeated listens this past year. Mixed on Serato since a few of these have not seen vinyl releases quite yet or won't at all (and that's ok!!). Enjoy! Kerry and Collin have been keeping track of several new Christmas films and TV episodes that have been dropping over the last several weeks and give brief thoughts on each of them. This includes "A Very Jonas Christmas," "Jingle Bell Heist," "A Paw Patrol Christmas," "The Merchants of Joy," "Oh. What. Fun." and "Christmas Karma." They also have quick thoughts on the new "Silent Night, Deadly Night" remake, which will be talked about more in-depth in October of next year, per SNDN tradition. The first week of December isn't just for cozy rom-coms and twinkling lights. On this episode of This Week in Horror History, we dig into the spooky side of December 1–7, charting travel nightmares, cursed deserts, classic Universal monsters, and a knife-clawed college mascot turning school spirit into a bloodbath. We kick things off with Turistas (2006), the mid-2000s travel horror where a dream backpacking trip in Brazil plunges into organ-harvesting terror. It's that “don't get on the bus” era of horror, loaded with sweaty paranoia and the ugly underside of “exotic” tourism. From there, we head to the desert with Scalps (1983), a shoestring-budget curse shocker about archaeology students who dig on sacred land and unleash a vengeful spirit. It slipped quietly into limited December release but later clawed out a cult following on home video and streaming thanks to its gritty, regional DIY vibe. Then we turn back the clock to House of Dracula (1945), one of Universal's last serious monster mash-ups. Dracula, the Wolf Man, and Frankenstein's monster all converge on a tormented doctor who thinks he can “cure” them — and instead gives us a fog-drenched fever dream of capes, neck bolts, and mad science that feels tailor-made for chilly December nights. Our Deep Cut Spotlight goes to Girls Nite Out (1982), a campus slasher originally released as The Scaremaker. A college basketball win kicks off an all-night scavenger hunt, while a killer in the school's bear mascot costume stalks the grounds with steak knives strapped to its paws. It's pure early-'80s slasher energy — dorm drama, campus radio, locker-room stalking — that barely made a ripple in theaters but was rescued by VHS and, eventually, a boutique Blu-ray restoration. We also roll through a Birthday Roll for horror heavy hitters born this week — from Sean S. Cunningham and Tony Todd to genre-shaping talents behind slashers, supernatural sequels, and expressionist nightmares — and talk about how their work threads through the films we're spotlighting. To wrap it all up, we land on a Weekly Recommendation that fits perfectly with early December: Edward Scissorhands (1990). It's the ultimate snowy, suburban gothic fairy tale — pastel houses, winter loneliness, and a gentle “monster” whose ice-carved sculptures make the snow fall — ideal for horror fans easing into holiday mode without losing that eerie edge. This episode of This Week in Horror History is brought to you in part by Savorista — the spooky-friendly coffee brand serving bold, gourmet flavors in decaf and half-caf roasts so you can binge horror without wrecking your sleep. Head to Savorista.com, pick out your favorite light, medium, or dark roast, and use promo code SPOOKY at checkout to get 25% off your first order. Every purchase supports the show directly and keeps the horror history rolling. If you love horror podcasts, physical media, and deep-cut genre history, queue this one up and let This Week in Horror History program your first December horror marathon.
Ben Mauro is one of the industry's most respected concept artists, known for defining the look of blockbusters like Halo Infinite, but his latest venture is a masterclass in how artists can successfully build and own their own intellectual property. Ben returns to the podcast to break down the journey of expanding his independent sci-fi universe, Huxley, from a passion project into a high-end graphic novel series published by Thames & Hudson. He shares the creative and business roadmap for launching his new prequel, The Oracle, and explains why maintaining full creative control is essential for building a lasting legacy in a committee-driven industry. Beyond the logistics of publishing, the discussion dives deep into the philosophical necessity of physical media in an age of fleeting digital licenses. Ben, Chris, and Daniel explore the "pride of ownership" that comes with tangible art, whether it's a collector's edition Blu-ray or a deluxe graphic novel, and how this tactile connection anchors the audience to the story. They also touch on the "Roman Empire" of machines within Huxley's lore and the vital lesson of creating art for oneself, proving that the most personal work is often what resonates most with the world.
