In this festive episode of the Bonkers About Beach Huts podcast, Natalie Young welcomes Nikki Cavell, a Portage Officer and member of the Blue Tits, a global community of cold water swimmers. As Christmas approaches, they discuss the unique experience of wild swimming along the stunning Dorset Coast, particularly on Christmas and New Year's Day, some of the busiest times at the beach. Nikki shares her journey into cold water swimming, the emotional and physical benefits she has experienced, and offers practical advice for those considering a dip in the sea during the holiday season. KEY TAKEAWAYS The Blue Tits is a worldwide community of cold water swimmers that encourages individuals to enjoy the sea at their own pace, promoting the motto "swim your own swim," which emphasizes no pressure to participate beyond one's comfort level. Engaging in cold water swimming can lead to improved mental health, providing feelings of relaxation and invigoration. Regular dips can help alleviate feelings of restlessness and enhance overall well-being. For those considering cold water swimming, it's essential to prepare adequately. This includes bringing layers of clothing for warmth, a hot drink, and a buddy for safety. It's also important to listen to your body and not set strict time limits for how long to stay in the water. Recognising signs of when to exit the water, such as a pins-and-needles sensation or shivering, is crucial for safety. Swimmers should prioritise getting warm quickly after exiting the water to prevent hypothermia. Anyone can join the Blue Tits without a membership fee, making it an accessible option for those interested in trying cold water swimming. Local groups can be found through online searches. The Blue Tits fosters a welcoming environment for newcomers. BEST MOMENTS "The motto is swim your own swim, which I think is lovely because there's absolutely no pressure on anybody to even get in the water, let alone swim." "I just really want to go. It's almost like a mental or emotional stretch, if you like. So yeah, I've definitely noticed the benefits." "If I do yoga and I don't do yoga for a long time, I really need to go and have a good yoga session and really stretch." "Christmas Day and New Year's Day are some of the busiest days at the beach." "I think the health benefits of cold water swimming are becoming more understood." Welcome to the first episode of Bonkers About Beach Huts! To mark the occasion, Natalie Young takes listeners on a delightful tour of the UK's beach hut scene, starting at Friars Cliff Beach in Christchurch, Dorset. She shares insights into the award-winning blue flag beach, the iconic Needles landmark, and the charming beach huts that line the elevated boardwalk. From discussing the pricing and ownership of beach huts to exploring the quirky names owners give them, Natalie provides a comprehensive look at beach hut life.  KEY TAKEAWAYS The Friars Cliff Beach in Christchurch, Dorset, is an award-winning blue flag beach with a view of the Needles and the Isle of Wight. The beach huts at Friars Cliff are privately owned and lease-owned, with annual license fees covering amenities like water, refuse collection, and public toilets. There are 156 beach huts at Friars Cliff, with 115 front row and 41 second row huts, each row offering different views and experiences. Beach hut prices at Friars Cliff range from £75,000 to £115,000, with front row huts typically priced higher due to their location and space. The beach hut names at Friars Cliff are diverse and creative, reflecting themes like seaside living, relaxation, and personal connections, adding character to the beachfront. BEST MOMENTS "I wonder if you can guess where I am. I'll give you a clue. I'm on the southeast coast of England, looking out across the sea, across the needles, hazy in the sunshine." "Out of 2,000 beach huts across the UK, there are 156 beach huts at Fry's Cliff, 115 front row and 41 second row." "The beach huts here are privately owned and are all lease-owned. Lucky leaseholders pay an annual license fee, which is similar to council tax, and covers things like water, tarps, refuge collection, and public toilets." "Some of the names indicate how Beach Hut life makes them feel. Happy Day, Jolly Jack, Bright and Breezy, Tickety Boo and it'll do." "If you fancy a dip on the beach immediately in front of the Salty Seagull meets the Blue Tits. This is a bunch of friendly cold water swimmers." HOST BIO My name is Natalie Young. Send us a Text Message. If you've been following our Instagram this week, you might have noticed our battle with aphids. So, I thought it would be helpful to share some more details of biological control in gardening.Biological control involves the use of natural enemies to tackle garden pests. From introducing predators to employing pathogenic nematodes, we explore how these methods offer effective and eco-friendly pest management solutions.Key Takeaways:Benefits of Biological Control: Unlike chemical pesticides, biological controls leave no residues and cause no harm to plants. Once established, natural enemies can multiply and reduce pest populations to acceptable levels.Understanding Predators:Predatory and parasitoid biological controls, though not providing instant results, offer long-term solutions. Timing is crucial, as introducing them before heavy infestation ensures effectiveness.Seasonal Considerations: Glasshouse predators and parasites thrive in warm conditions, with ideal breeding temperatures between late March and September. Reintroduction may be necessary annually.Compatibility with Pesticides: Predators and parasites are sensitive to pesticides, necessitating their avoidance for several weeks before introducing biological controls. Fatty acid-based pesticides can be used with caution closer to introduction.Common Garden Pests and Solutions: Aphids, thrips, vine weevils, slugs, and red spider mites are prevalent nuisances. We explore natural remedies such as ladybirds, lacewings, predatory mites, and nematodes to combat these pests effectively.Practical Tips: Daily monitoring, manual removal of infested leaves, and encouraging natural predators like birds contribute to pest management efforts. To explore further, visit Ladybird Plant Care - www.ladybirdplantcare.co.uk, where Tessa can assist you in selecting the right biological controls for your garden.Embrace sustainable gardening practices with biological control methods, ensuring a thriving garden ecosystem without harmful chemicals. Chris Baines is one of the UK's leading independent environmentalists and an award-winning writer and broadcaster.A trained horticulturist and landscape architect, he spent some years practising and teaching landscape design but has spent most of his career a professional adviser to Government and other bodies including the National Trust, National Grid and energy regulator Ofgem.Fornerly a presenter of BBC Countryfile, his 1986 film Blue Tits and Bumblebees is often credited with starting the trend towards gardening with nature.Back in 1979 Baines bucked the trend in a chemical-driven gardening decade and created a "rich habitat garden" for Gardeners World. "At that stage, I just remember vividly...Peter [Seabrook] looking at me and saying..'you really think Britain's gardeners are going to be interested in that?' It was a supreme put down, really. And then they were absolutely avalanched with requests for the leaflet that I'd produced about how to create a rich habitat garden."With his best-selling book How to Make a Wildlife Garden continuously in print for almost 40 years, a new expanded edition was published in 2023 as an RHS classic, he reflects on where nature gardening and rewilding is today. His new book RHS Companion to Wildlife Gardening updated edition is out now. With Biodiversity Net Gain now in legislation, Baines shares his concerns: "If the outcome of the new legislation is that more creative partnership with the Wildlife Trust and others managing the investment that's required from the developers, that would be brilliant...If it finishes up with just little patches of trees planted on, in many cases, landscape, which is rather more valuable without its trees for wildlife than it will be with trees on it, then that will be a wasted opportunity. But I'm eternally optimistic."He discusses the pros and cons of bird feeding and the prospects for and importance of local parks in this election year."It's wonderful to have national parks out in the countryside, but actually most people most of the time need access to green space right where they live and work. And we need to take that much more seriously because neglect and lack of safety in those spaces puts people off going there." Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ever since I heard about ‘The Blue Tits' cold water dipping community, I loved (the brilliant name!), the philosophy, its inclusivity and focus on community but mostly how much it centres on helping people to move forward, gently pushing themselves towards doing something that can be life-changing when it's often needed most.  Chatting with Sian Richardson, its founder, was a great conversation as her enthusiasm and encouragement of everyone is clear throughout and is obviously the reason a meeting of a few like-minded souls on a beach in Wales became a global community. I enjoyed istening to her own story about overcoming depression and finding solace in movement, particularly running and swimming. Joining a community such as she (almost mistakenly) created, can have a transformative power on our lives and I hope listening inspires you to move in a direction you want to take perhaps by sharing the experience with a friend.   About today's guest: Sian Richardon founded The Bluetits Chill Swimmers in the winter of 2014 in the Pembrokeshire sea. There are now over 120,000 members all around the world. The community's values are fun, trust, inclusivity and to ‘challenge our limits together'. You can start your own ‘flock' by visiting the website below and starting your own Bluetits community. Sian is also director at Pencarnan Farm caravan park and campsite in Pembrokeshire. In her search for answers and to reclaim her own movement again she discovered natural movement. The philosophy of training real life practical movements to be able to keep using them as we age, coupled with the benefit of using strengthening and mobilising whole-body movement patterns that are underused in today's modern world made her realise she had found a way to move for life. Wendy's aim is to help people embrace a movement-rich life, at any age, to improve mobility, strength and confidence to keep moving well and doing the things they love for as long as they want.  MovNat Level 1 certified & Functional Range Conditioning certified, she coaches online group classes live & by replay in the Reclaim Movement membership as well as online and in-person private coaching in Oxford.  Find out more about Reclaim Movement: Website  Instagram YouTube Facebook FREE E-BOOK - 'Making the Ground your Friend for Life!'  NEWSLETTER: Sign up for the monthly(ish) newsletter, 'Just.Move' RECLAIM MOVEMENT MONTHLY OR ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP - FREE 7-DAY TRIAL: includes LIVE (& by replay) natural movement classes, all replays, mini movement videos, tutorials, community support, movement prompts, and regular motivation. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. This week we have suggestions from Liesbet, Simon, and Thea, who suggested some relatively common birds that you may already think you know all about, but there's lots to learn about them! We'll start with Liesbet's suggestion, about the European robin and bluebird, and while we're at it we'll learn about the American robin and bluebird. The European and American birds are completely different species. The reason they have the same names is because when Europeans first started paying attention to the birds of North America, they needed names for the birds. The native peoples had names for them, of course, but the Europeans wanted names in a language they understood, so in a lot of cases they just borrowed names already in use at home. Let's start with the robin, which we also talked about way back in episode 81. The European robin is a little bitty bird, only around 5 inches long, or 13 cm, with a brown back, streaked gray or buff belly, and orange face and breast. It has a short black bill and round black eyes. It eats insects, worms, berries, and seeds. The eggs are pale brown with reddish speckles. It lives throughout much of Eurasia, but robins in Britain tend to be fairly tame, probably because they were traditionally considered beneficial in Britain and Ireland, so farmers and gardeners wouldn't hurt them. In other parts of Europe they were hunted and are much more shy. European robins are also common on Christmas cards in Britain and Ireland, possibly because in the olden days, postmen used to wear red jackets. The postmen started to be called robins as a result, and since postmen bring Christmas cards, the bird robin became linked with card delivery and finally just ended up on the Christmas cards. Plus, their orange markings are cheerful in winter. This is what the European robin sounds like: [robin song] The American robin is a type of thrush. It lives year-round in most of the United States and parts of Mexico, spends summers in much of Canada, and winters in parts of Mexico. It's very different from the European robin. The European robin is tiny and round and adorable, while the American robin is big and always looks kind of angry. It grows around 10 inches long, or 25 cm. It's dark gray on its back, with a rusty red breast, white undertail coverts, and a long yellow bill. It also has white markings around its eyes. Young birds are speckled. It mostly eats insects, worms, and berries. If you see a bird on the ground, running quickly and then stopping, it's probably a robin. Mostly the robin hunts bugs by sight, but it has good hearing and can actually hear worms moving around underground. You can sometimes see a robin with its head cocked, listening for a worm, before pouncing and pulling it out of the ground, just like in a cartoon. American robin eggs are a light teal blue, so common and well-known that robin's-egg-blue is a typical description of that particular color. In the spring after eggs hatch, the mother robin will carry the eggshells away from the nest to drop them,

Dick is a lifetime birdwatcher. He has applied his experience as an engineer and software designer to the problem of halting the decline of Swifts with the team at Action for Swifts. The team, headed by Dick Newell, has an extensive knowledge of the needs of Swifts and the requirements of the construction industry. The S Brick is the culmination of many years of research and experience aimed at providing a simple, long-lasting and sustainable solution to reversing the decline of the endangered Swift. Action for Swifts mission Our mission is to reverse the decline of Swifts. Swifts in the UK are on the Birds of Conservation Concern (BoCC) Red List and are classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List assessment of extinction risk for Great Britain. Swifts declined by 58% between 1995 and 2018. They declined by 41% in just 10 years up to 2018, that is over 5% per annum! One of the reasons, perhaps the main reason, is loss of nest sites. Provision of new housing provides a big opportunity to install Swift bricks for Swifts, and other small cavity-nesting birds. We regard the S Brick as a ”Universal” nesting brick as it can accommodate Swifts, House Sparrows, Tree Sparrows, Blue Tits, Great Tits, Starlings and even House Martins. It is our goal to find the optimum compromise between the requirements of the birds and the constraints of the building, making it as easy as possible for the builder on site, as well as resulting in something aesthetically pleasing, and at a low cost.

I woke up this morning to a thrush's liquid song cascading from the top of an oak tree about 100m away. Phrase after phrase, loud and clear. Not the repetitive song of a Song Thrush, nor the more mellow conversation of a Blackbird, but the melodious outpouring of a Mistle Thrush. Perched, typically, in the open, bold as brass, daring the local Sparrowhawk to interrupt, swept up in the power of his own remarkable voice as it bounced around off the stone walls of our home.During lockdown I bought a parabolic reflector for moments just like this, and over the last few weeks I've been wandering around recording bird songs and layering them together. Common species (at least around here), including Blackbird, Song Thrush, Robin, Greenfinch, Chaffinch, Great and Blue Tits, Nuthatch, and Wren. I've caught snippets of the drumming of a Great Spotted Woodpecker, the first Chiffchaff of the spring, a pair of Wood Pigeons sitting in the sun, our local Rooks flying overhead. I even went out on a frosty morning and caught a barking Roe Deer echoing through a piece of woodland I can see from my window. And now was a perfect time to record that beautiful Mistle Thrush. The result is only short (less than six minutes) and to be honest no one morning sounds exactly like this, but forgive me for any ‘audio licence' because I hope - as it does for me - this brief dawn chorus transports you to somewhere soothing, a place of abundance, and far, far from the headlines.

While exploring a dubious claim we find out why its hard to work that out. Is it true that on in two people will get cancer? We've looked at this statistic before but listeners keep spotting it on TV. We also ask: if the SarsCov2 RNA is 96% similar to the RNA of a virus found in bats - is that similar, or not?

The BBC's Springwatch is a cultural institution in the UK, showcasing the extraordinary but often overlooked wildlife of these crumbling isles with warts 'n all realism (i.e. lots of baby Blue Tits getting munched). Biologist Gillian Burke has for three years been at the heart of the show's presenting team, earning the nation's affection for her passion and powers of communication as much as for her unblinking resolve in the face of uncooperative protagonists and innuendo-tastic co-presenters.Gillian is also a Black woman in an industry - conservation, nature TV and the environment movement as a whole - notable for its woeful lack of representation of people of colour. In a longer-than-usual episode, we hear Gillian's reflections on why those banging on about the planet - the Babble very much included - present so little ethnic diversity, and on the extraordinary Spring of 2020, a period that will surely be remembered for the elevation of racial injustice laid bare by George Floyd's killing and the Black Lives Matter protests, and when millions took solace in the natural world as the global pandemic raged.Sustainababble is your friendly environment podcast, out weekly.
