Artist Jack Hilton talks about leading with color, how failure begets momentum, the literary touchpoints that have been informing his practice, and much more.Jack Hilton, b.1996, is a London-based painter.Hilton's work explores history, literature and mythology. Often a real historical episode is presented like a myth or biblical drama, riffing on the long tradition of History Painting. Subjects vary from the Tower of Babel to Bayeux Tapestry ships on fire. In the process Hilton aims to give a fresh sense of emotional resonance or comedy to these scenes.Hilton uses these intense narratives as a leaping-off point for a more formal exploration of colour and pattern-making. He used figuration in a heraldic, patchwork kind of way, with large parts of the canvas blocked out by flat colour, interrupted by layered shapes. In art as in life, what you take out is sometimes more important than what you put in.Following a degree in English Literature at the University of Sussex, Hilton began painting professionally in 2020. He has been part of many group exhibitions including with Felt Collections (London) and Reuter Bausch (Luxembourg). His first solo show came in the winter of 2023 at The Table, Hay-on-Wye followed by another at Galleriet Agnes in Copenhagen in summer 2024.Hilton comes from a family of painters. His grandparents were the acclaimed St Ives artists Rose and Roger Hilton.Jack's work: jackhilton.co.ukJack's Instagram: @jackhilton_art

Running 44@60 Podcast - plotting Trevor Lee's journey to the 2021 44 mile Cornwall Classic Quarter
Just 3 days to go to the Arc of Attrition 50 - I've been planning all the sections - estimating times for each one, making notes of landmarks to take with me, getting all the kit ready for registration check on Friday. And with no running for four weeks I've been eating, sleeping, watching Arc of Attrition You Tube videos and listening to previous episodes of this podcast which featured the Arc 50.My plan is to be on the start line and see how we go from there.I want to have a grand day out and I'll be recording for this podcast as part of that.Looking at my timing estimates ensuring I get to St Ives in time to change shoes etc and leave by 5.15pm could be very tight. Good luck to all of you taking part. Run with a smile on your face and enjoy your day! I ran my first, and so far only, ultra marathon in 2021 - the 44 mile Classic Quarter - to celebrate a landmark birthday which was a few weeks before the run. This podcast started as a way of me learning how to do that - hence why it's called Running 44@60. The adventure then turned into a book and as a business consultant it became both a business and running book and is available on Amazon via this link: 12 Business Lessons from Running an Ultra Marathon. My run raised over £7000 for Childrens Hospice South West Music Therapy programme and every book bought on Amazon generates another £5 for the programme. Today are guests are Slomo. A band made up of members Chris (“Holy”) McGrail who recently contributed to Julian Cope's Dope and Queen Elizabeth projects and Howard Marsden who co-runs Hebden Bridge's already-legendary Ambient Bowling Club, where experimental music mixes with environmental sounds, low chatter and the soft clank of bowls. We discuss ancient sites around the UK, The Modern Antiquarian and Slomo's musc to date including their fifth album in 20 years, “Zen and Zennor”; their sonic palette refreshed, their focus again tuned to the spectral otherness of Land's End. The cover star – Zennor Quoit – is a colossal megalithic structure to be found on moorland above the village of Zennor, 4.5 miles to the west of St Ives.

As David's returning to St Ives for another visit soon, Joe tells him about the time he went to the Tate gallery there. So they discuss some of the art it has and David recounts an afternoon he spent in the town, visiting cosy little art galleries and chatting to a few of the artists. Then he imagines setting a up podcast studio there - much to the annoyance of the other artists. He also visited the beautiful seaside village of Zenner, and tells Joe about that too. So talk inevitably turns to moving to Cornwall again. Finally, as they're keen to speak to someone who lives in St Ives, they put a call out to the Patreons. And as luck would have it, James does and has lived all his life there. So joins them on Zoom to tell them about it - lovely. During David's recent holiday in Cornwall, he visited the St Ives Museum where he discovered some spooky family history. So he tells Joe all about it, along with plenty more of the Cornish delights that he learnt about at the museum. So sit tight for some wonderful tales from the past, such as the story of the Hearts Ice Cream brothers, the history of the Sloop Inn and the origins of the good old Cornish Pasty. Lunnon Metals Ltd (ASX:LM8, OTC:LNMLF) managing director and CEO Edmund Ainscough spoke with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about BHP's decision to suspend its Nickel West operations in Australia until at least 2027 and its impact on Lunnon Metals. Ainscough explained the decision brings clarity to the market. He said BHP had already announced the closure of the Kambalda Nickel Concentrator in February, highlighting that this event allows Lunnon Metals to move forward without the constraints of relying on BHP's infrastructure. "It's time to look forward to a future that doesn't necessarily involve that Kambalda concentrator or BHP," Ainscough stated. Lunnon Metals has been preparing for this shift, having already identified a site on its tenements for a new, modern float plant. This site, previously home to the St Ives gold plant, offers existing infrastructure that will facilitate the development of their own concentrator. Ainscough noted the resilience and profitability of its nickel assets, stating it is well-positioned to finance the new concentrator independently. When asked about the impact on the Foster South nickel project, Ainscough confirmed that their focus remains on gold to generate immediate revenue, despite the positive news for nickel. He also discussed the recent seismic survey data from the Long South Gap exploration program, indicating potential new nickel channels that could be explored when market conditions improve. Back in December 2021 I had the privilege of interviewing Alison Spence, Principal of Kohia Terrace School in Auckland New Zealand. In that episode we were joined by some of Alison's primary students to hear of the fantastic impact of their ‘students coaching students' programme. In this episode I am excited to re-visit the whole concept of students coaching students but this time at secondary school level. To talk us through a fascinating coaching journey, I'm delighted to be joined by Natasha Mercer. Natasha is Head Teacher of Teaching and Learning at St Ives High School in Sydney Australia and in this episode she takes us through both the challenges and the significant benefits of developing a programme in school where students coach other students. If you are considering what students coaching students might look like in your school then this is a must listen. Enjoy.

Joe even gets a live take on tape to top off an honest insight into life and his carp finshing adventures. Me and Mark also delve into the crazy use of AI generated carp pictures and how they've even appeared on a recent bait company advert, before endng this months ramblings with a very important topic, online abuse, trolls and the impact this can have on people.

Many of her works incorporated lyrical forms with close connection to the feeling and form of the materials that she used in her work making Barbara Hepworth one of the most influential sculptors of the mid-20th century. At the breakout of World War II Barbara Hepworth moved from London to Cornwall with her husband Ben Nicholson and their young family. Paul McGowan has strong common sense conservative views which are simply not allowed in the art world. His willingness to share his thoughts led to him being cancelled on different occasions. He returns to Hearts of Oak for a wide ranging conversation on topics like climate change and free speech. It all fits under the realisation that art is no longer about free thinking and opinion but about a controlled narrative driven by governments and institutions. Paul McGowan studied art at Falmouth, Winchester and Bath school of Art. His work has often created controversy and has been regularly featured in the press all around the world. He established himself as a fashion designer at a young age; when he was 20 he became the youngest designer to ever sell a collection to fashion house Browns, and went on to work for a variety of well-known fashion industry names, including Gianni Versace. During his formative years at Art School, he had his first exhibition in St Ives, and won the Tate Magazine Award. Since this time he has continued to develop a strong career for his distinctive - and often political - artworks, recognised locally in 2008 when he was appointed as artist in residence at the Eden Project. His work is collected across the world and he is a serial collaborator, often producing works released under different identities. Paul's works often provoke strong reactions. Perhaps the most unexpected was when in 2010 police in riot gear were sent to raid a central London gallery after one of the artworks - a fake bomb in the window - caused reports of a 'suspicious' device. His current work has been exhibited extensively in the UK as well as abroad. For more on Paul and to see his art... Curator Morad Montazami assembles the revolutionary artist-professors and students of the Casablanca Art School who constructed the post-colonial state of Morocco in the 20th century, and how North African crafts were part of both transnational networks, and local traditions, pre-dating Western European modernism. The Casablanca Art School proposed a bold, revolutionary new wave of Arab visual culture following Morocco's declaration of independence from French and Spanish colonial rule in 1956. Reflecting a new social awareness, Farid Belkahia, Mohammed Chabâa and Mohamed Melehi looked beyond Western European academic traditions - and demanded the removal of all Greco-Roman sculptures - sending students to travel more locally, where they encountered traditional arts and crafts more modern than Klee and Kandinsky. The Tate is the only institution in the world to hold works by all three of the Casablanca trio. Morad Montazami, a curator of a landmark new show in St Ives, explores how the School's many artists worked across painting, sculpture, graphic design, and architectural murals, integrating art and infrastructure, and artists and the economy. Plus, why we should decentre the Bauhaus as a Western European school, how artists incorporated modern abstract influences alongside Mexican, pan-Arabic, and Marxist revolutionary politics, why a Dutch anthropologist coined the phrase Afro-Berberism, and how the absence of museum spaces after empire provided an opportunity for more public, accessible art - for the nation to ‘build itself'. The Casablanca Art School: Platforms and Patterns for a Postcolonial Avant-Garde, 1962-1987 runs at the Tate St Ives in Cornwall until 14 January 2024, then at the Sharjah Art Foundation into 2024. For more, you can read my article. WITH: Morad Montazami, art historian, a publisher and a curator. Paul McGowan is a rare breed. An artist well known for his controversial, distinctive and often political artworks who openly supports Brexit, Trump, and sits to the right of the political spectrum. This episode we discuss with Paul how he was targeted by the police, punished by the establishment and shunned by some of his peers in the art world for daring to think different. We also look at art in the 21st century and why memes have become such important tools in the culture wars and have become the graffiti of the Internet. Paul McGowan studied art at Falmouth, Winchester and Bath school of Art. His work has often created controversy and has been regularly featured in the press all around the world. The Library or Study has long been the haven of the contemplative pipe smoker. In our ‘From The Library' series, we take a look into the musings, writings, poetry, and more that pique our interest and consider the mind of the author and how we can, or perhaps can't, relate from our own experience. This week: “The Miracle of Mindfulness” by Thich Nhat Hanh Pipe Question: (From MarkVV) Captain Jorvik and Jon David, Ahoy, fellas! I have a query for both of you! So often Beau is left high and dry on this so I wanted to ask something of him to be inclusive! Jon David. Do different types of tobacco leaf, for instance, bright leaf and red Virginias, age differently or faster than others? Or is it purely a question of sugar content in the leaf? Or both? Or something else? And Beau. If you really were Captain Jorvik of the Seven Seas, what tobacco would you envision your pirate-self smoking? It can be period appropriate or modern, like Country Squire Treasure Island. As always, I hope you both are well, as well as your dear families. Hope to cross paths soon. Your friend, Mark VV Listener Feedback: (From Chables) Beau! Jon David! Hope yall are well! Hope to get to see yall at some point soon what with covid dying down and such. I wanted to say how tickled i was to hear my name in the St Ives drawing. Not gonna lie, i was having a rough end to a rough year, but that really made my day that day and put a smile on my face like yall do so often.
