She found her way into ultra-distance events, chasing big landscapes, solo efforts, and above all, fun. But she never fully committed to going all in. Because when you don't give it everything, failure can't quite cut as deep.Still, the feeling lingered: maybe she hadn't yet seen what she was truly capable of. Maybe her past didn't have to define her future. This year she decided to go all in, chasing the World Record a World Record. Riding 7,732 kilometers around the edge of Britain would take structure, discipline, and belief. 2024 marked the 200th Anniversary of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, an organisation funded wholly by voluntary contributions, keeping our seas safe since 1824. In this episode we visit the volunteers and boat crews who are based at the Blackpool Lifeboat Station, one of the busiest in the country. On their open day in the summer of 2024 we find out what makes them tick and the motivation behind why they do what they do. Willing to risk their own lives in order to save others. We also weave the heroic story of Grace Darling into the podcast, whose actions assisting her father William saved many lives,  in a daring rescue that became national news in the 19th century. Kilrush RNLI is advising people to check weather and underfoot conditions when venturing out on coastal walks during the Christmas break. As part of its campaign to promote safety near coasts in conjunction with the Irish Coast Guard and Water Safety Ireland, people are reminded to take a fully charged phone out with them and to be aware of hazardous conditions near cliff edges. If you, or a member of your party gets into difficulty, the RNLI can be contacted by dialing 999 or 112 and requesting the coast guard. Kilrush RNLI Volunteer Lifeboat Press Officer, Charlie Glynn says people shouldn't be hesitant about calling in a potential emergency and shouldn't put themselves in danger in an attempted rescue.

Nuacht Mhall. Príomhscéalta na seachtaine, léite go mall. * Inniu an séú lá déag de mhí na Samhna. Is mise Alanna Ní Ghallachóir. Tá COP29 ar siúl san Asarbaiseáin faoi láthair agus dúirt uachtarán na tíre óstaí leis an chomhdháil aeráide gur “bronntanas Dé” iad an ola agus an gás. Rinne an tUachtarán Ilham Aliyev cáineadh ar “bhréagnuacht an Iarthair” faoi astaíochtaí na tíre, agus mhaígh nár cheart an locht a chur ar náisiúin, as stoc breoslaí iontaise a bheith acu. Tá pleananna ag an tír táirgeadh gáis a mhéadú sna deich mbliana atá romhainn. Go gearr ina dhiaidh sin, dúirt Ard-Rúnaí na Náisiún Aontaithe António Guterres, nach raibh bun ná barr leis an ghreim daingean ar úsáid a bhaint as bhreoslaí iontaise. Tá sé aontaithe ag ceannairí domhanda roimhe seo, go ndéanfar iarracht gan téamh domhanda a ligeann os cionn 1.5 céim Celsius níos teo faoi dheireadh na chéid, ach sáraíodh an teorainn sin cheana féin i mbliana. Chuaigh bean ar iarraidh ó Thrá na gCeann i gContae na Gaillimhe Dé Máirt. Ba dhuine de bheirt í a chuaigh amach ag snámh san uisce. Cuireadh scairt ar na seirbhísí éígeandála, nuair nár fhill an cumadóir aitheanta Johnny Duhan ar ais óna shnámh féin, agus fuarthas a chorp roinnt uaireanta ina dhiaidh sin. Bhí meascán seirbhísí ag tabhairt faoi chuardach na mná, na Gardaí, an Garda Cósta, an Chosaint Shibhialta, agus an RNLI ina measc, i dteannta le buíonta cuardaigh agus tarrthála as áiteanna éagsúla in Éirinn. Maidin Dé Sathairn, bhí an cuardach ag dul ar aghaidh ar muir agus ar tír, ón Spidéal go hÓran Mór agus soir go Cinn Mhara. Tharla sochraid Duhan, a bhí ceithre bliana is seachtó d'aois, ar an Chnoc Breac i gContae na Gaillimhe inné. Tá muintir Mháire Ní Fhátharta ag bailiú airgid ar líne chun cuidiú leis an chuardach, agus iad ag súil go mbeidh siad ábalta í a thabhairt abhaile. Aimsíodh fige 2,000 bliain d'aois i dtuaisceart Bhaile Átha Cliath ar na mallaibh agus dúradh gurb í an sampla is aosta de thorthaí andúchasacha a fuarthas in Éirinn.

Some friends went boating in the English Channel, hoping the forecast for stormy weather would change. But the winds rose and the waves became choppy, threatening the safety of their vessel, so they radioed for help to the RNLI (the Royal National Lifeboat Institution). After some tense moments, they spotted their rescuers in the distance and realized with relief they’d soon be safe. As my friend reflected gratefully afterward, “Whether or not people ignore the rules of the sea, the RNLI still comes to the rescue.” As he recounted the story, I thought about how Jesus leads God’s search-and-rescue mission. He came to Earth to become a man, living as one of us. Through His death and resurrection, He provided us with a rescue plan when our sin and disobedience separated us from God. This truth is emphasized by Paul, when writing to the church at Galatia: “The Lord Jesus Christ . . . gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age” (Galatians 1:4). Paul reminded the Galatians of the gift of new life they received through Jesus’s death so that they would honor God day by day. Jesus, our rescuer, willingly died to save us from being lost. Because He did, we have life in the kingdom of God, and in gratitude we can share the life-saving news with those in our community.

Joe's just back from a trip to the Isle of White where he over-ate and also had quite a few compliments from the locals about The Cockfields. Being a big supporter of the RNLI, he also took the opportunity to visit their station in Bembridge and tells David about watching one of the boats launch. Then for some reason, David remembers that David Walliams has swam the English Channel and so they want to find someone who's done that too, to ask them what it's like. Talk then inevitably turns to moving to the Isle of White and also, who gets the ball rolling on discussions about stuff like that with their wives. They then consider loads of other locations across the UK as possibilities to relocate to - so much so that it soon develops into a ‘yes or no' game show.
