Tuesday's preseason loss to Warriors didn't just present the first look at the Lakers' Big Three of LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook. It raised the question of who should start alongside that trio of All-Stars. Granted, Frank Vogel's hands are a bit tied at the moment, given all the players who are shelved with injuries. But could Kent Bazemore and Carmelo Anthony, the two filling out Tuesday's lineup, fit the bill moving forward? Bazemore feels like a lock by now, but Melo? More debatable. So the Kamenetzkys do just that. What are the pros and cons of the future Hall of Famer vs. Wayne Ellington, Kendrick Nunn or other looks? Whatever the rotation chosen, how much fun will the Lakers actually be to watch? ESPN's Zach Lowe offered up some thoughts in a recent column, and the Kamenetzkys react to his assessment. Finally, undrafted two-way player Austin Reaves has been turning heads of late with some unexpectedly un-rookie play. Is he a viable option once games actually count? Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: What's the best starting lineup for the Lakers, and does it include Melo? SEGMENT 2: On a pure "fun" scale, how enjoyable will the Lakers be? SEGMENT 3: Is Hillbilly Kobe a thing? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! SweatBlock Get it today for 20% off at SweatBlock.com with promo code LockedOn, or at Amazon and CVS. Another day, another Lakers preseason loss. This time, it was 123-94 spanking at the hands of the Phoenix Suns, a continuation of a themes seen since training camp opened. The Lakers were shorthanded (Trevor Ariza, Talen Horton-Tucker and Malik Monk are injured, while LeBron James opted not to suit up), and the play on both sides of the ball was, shall we say, erratic. And the final score reflected a general lack of cohesion. Not that there were no positives to speak of. Anthony Davis played his best game of the preseason, and seems to be rounding steadily into form, whether in terms of his offensive aggression or his defensive impact. Carmelo Anthony connected on five three-pointers. And Kent Bazemore was a quintessential "three-and-D" player (particularly the "D" part, where he was quite disruptive to Phoenix's schemes). As raggedy as the game was, those three stood out with positive contributions. On the other hand, Russell Westbrook was pretty brutal, whether as a scorer or running the offense. Only three of his twelve shots fell, and those nine missed shots were matched with nine turnovers. To be clear, a big issue appears to be timing and a lack of familiarity with so many new teammates, which is to be expected to some degree. If anything, Westbrook may have been periodically overcompensating trying to move the ball around. Still, he's been a turnover machine in two preseason appearances, and it's still not entirely clear what his role is when he's not in charge of the ball. Then again, it's not entirely clear the Lakers have been getting the most from this preseason, anyway. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Kamenetzkys begin the show with the positive elements from the loss: AD. Melo. Bazemore (who seems to have cemented his case to start). SEGMENT 2: Game #2 for Russ? He's clearly trying hard to involve his teammates, but hooo boy... SEGMENT 3: Have the Lakers been getting everything out of the preseason they want? Or more specifically, everything they want that they can control? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Lakers saw their preseason record fall to 0-4 as they were blown out again by the Suns. Should fans be worried? LeBron James didn't play but Kent Bazemore and Carmelo Anthony both had nice nights. Russll Westbrook, however, is still a work in progress...

It's felt a bit concerning that training camp has yet to include the participation of veteran forward Trevor Ariza, who'd been dealing with a sore ankle. Well, the mood just shifted from "concerning" to "alarming." The Lakers announced shortly after Wednesday's 117-105 preseason loss to the Phoenix Suns that Ariza underwent an arthroscopic debridement procedure, and is expected to miss at least two months. Ariza may not be the most important member of the team, nor was he necessarily expected to play huge minutes this season. But they did anticipate the minutes Ariza played to be important ones, whether as a starter, a closer, or a bit of both. Plus, Ariza was among the few players on the roster lacking true small forwards who at least *sort of* fit the bill. As such, a thin position just grew more depleted. Where do the Lakers go from here, whether in terms of the rotation or potentially adding a player to the roster? Those questions get answered, as well as first impressions of Carmelo Anthony, following his preseason debut. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: How will Trevor Ariza's absence affect the Lakers' rotation? Does it force Frank Vogel to commit to going big... or going small? SEGMENT 2: With Ariza sidelined, do the Lakers have to use their open fifteenth roster spot? SEGMENT 3: Melo finally dons a Laker uni. How did he look, and what will his role be? Reanna Cruz | September 17, 2021 Six hands, holding pencils as drumsticks, tap out a simple percussive beat on a Wurlitzer and two desks. Zooming out, the camera reveals the members of Diamante Eléctrico, accompanied by a colorful 10-piece backing ensemble in their home country's capital, Bogotá. Diamante Eléctrico's brand of Colombian indie rock can be described in three words: funky, inventive and necessary. The Latin Grammy-winning band's music emphasizes community and place — two things that are displayed front and center as the band takes the stage in the second "El Tiny" performance of Hispanic Heritage Month. "NO MIEDO!!!" (no fear) and "VERDAD" (truth) adorn the worn-down desks as the collective powers through a politically-charged four-song set. Opening with 2018's "Rotos," they breathe champeta life into their songs through horns and instruments like the guacharaca, played by singer Juan Galeano's brother Mario. They follow with "Suéltame Bogotá," an upbeat plea to escape a suffocating home, and feature a spirited guest performance by Nicolai Fella of LosPetitFellas. "Amalia" leads into a genuine expression of thanks and solidarity, as Galeano gives gratitude to those protesting on "primeras línea y segunda línea," shouting out the students and farmers challenging the government before finishing the set with "A Veces." It's why Diamante Eléctrico has made themselves so crucial, not only in the Latin indie rock scene, but in music at large: the band's tether to its home country is substantial, no matter how fraught it may seem. Through both its music and stage presence, Diamante Eléctrico curates a shared sense of Latin roots and family, expanding outward from its home of Colombia and resonating across Latinidad, from Puerto Rico to Panama. Sam and Emma host public sector immigration lawyer Daniel Melo to discuss his recent book Borderlines: The Edges of U.S. Capitalism, Immigration, and Democracy, which contextualizes immigration policy within the history of the US, and exploring what we can do to push back against the unfair designation of the migrant position. Melo begins by stepping back to the early battles between colonies, then states and the federal government on who has say regarding who can come into the country, looking particularly at the fears of negative influences on the early capitalist economy, whether that be anarchists, poor Irish folks, or the spirit of the Haitian revolution. Next, he dives into the first laws in the early 1920s that worked to criminalize immigrants, and how the developing Great Depression and reassertion of white supremacy worked to bolster this rhetoric of scapegoating migrants. Emma, Sam, and Daniel then cover a little theory, addressing the role migrants play within a Marxist view of our economy, providing capitalists with a cheap labor sector to aid the exploitation of the working class, before moving on to the false narrative constructed around immigration, from the ability to simply “get in line” for acceptance into the country to the idea that migrants drive down wages for US citizens, and how the law gets used to reinforce this status quo. They wrap up the interview by discussing the current state of the US immigration system, the importance of unpacking the undemocratic nature of the citizen-migrant dichotomy, and what the role of labor organizing can play in bolstering a progressive immigration agenda. Sam and Emma conclude the free half by touching on the state of the infrastructure and reconciliation package, and CNN's apparent lack of awareness about what the Democratic platform has been in the fight for this over the last few months. And in the Fun Half: Emma and Sam dive back into CNN's miscalculations of the infrastructure package, not quite realizing that $6 trillion is indeed not $3.5 trillion, and its inability not to finger point at progressives who've made their stance clear for months. Rudy from Orlando calls in to chat about the importance of taking away the exclusionary regulations around the medical industry that attempt to ensure patient survival, and Stephen Crowder finally gets back into his groove after hospitalization, fully diving back into middle school racism. Wednesday's podcast with Doug Norrie from Locked On Nets offered a lot of clarity regarding new Lakers center DeAndre Jordan, and what he still brings to the table, even while no longer in peak form. He's an imperfect player, and those flaws ultimately made him untenable for the style of the Brooklyn Nets, his former team. But for the Lakers' style, he might be just fine. Not incredible, not terrible, but fine. For Brian Kamenetzky, this was reassuring as someone who was pretty down on the acquisition. For Andy Kamenetzky, it was a reminder that deep stats and analytics are definitely useful, but also potentially misleading without context. Plus, the Lakers are working out Kenneth Faried? Really? Like... really? The Kamenetzkys also discussed a bonus segment with Norrie about the Nets' mega-offense, and how they'll look to smother opponents in points. Is it a coincidence that the Lakers, expected by most to face Brooklyn in the Finals, loaded up on offensive talent this summer? Or was it merely indicative of a pre-existing need to juice the offense, regardless of Brooklyn's firepower? Or a bit of both? And finally, Carmelo Anthony has been making the rounds promoting his new book, Where Tomorrows Aren't Promised: A Memoir of Survival and Hope. Among the many interesting thoughts shared during an interview in Esquire, Melo explained why, despite a close friendship with Kobe Bryant, teaming up in 2014 wouldn't have worked. Beyond the Lakers being Kobe's franchise, Los Angeles were "his city." That's just not an ideal setting for another superstar, much less one in his prime. It speaks to why the Kamenetzkys have said for years (and in the moment) that finding a superstar to play alongside Kobe was such a complicated venture. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Thoughts on Norrie's better-than-expected scouting report on DeAndre Jordan. SEGMENT 2: Did the Lakers revamp their roster with Brooklyn specifically in mind? SEGMENT 3: Melo talks Kobe and the Lakers, circa 2014. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Greatest Hits Episode: Marta Forero, Driving Economic Growth in Latin America via Corporate Education with UBits, Ep 149 For this week's episode of Crossing Borders, we're revisiting one of our greatest hits episodes featuring UBits' Marta Forero. As the only Latin American woman in her Y Combinator cohort, Marta Forero is helping break the mold for women in the tech industry. From a young age, she knew she wanted to make an impact on the world. After university, she took a high-paying job, which she then left to start a business of her own, combining her passion for education for transformative growth with a love of technology to create an online university. The result was UBits, a corporate online learning platform headquartered in Bogota, that Marta co-founded with Julián Melo. UBits, which also operates in Mexico and Peru, focuses on training based on bits– small training units created by industry experts…hence The University of Bits or UBits. UBits offers corporate training in Spanish in Business, Finances, Soft Skills, and Software Skills, and is a first-mover in the space. In this episode, Marta explains what it's like to be a female entrepreneur in Latin America, provides tips on how to apply for YCombinator and make the most out of the experience, as well as why she and her team chose to bootstrap UBits for four years before raising money. She shares one of the more unique stories of how she met her cofounder: at a bookstore. Check out the rest of this episode to hear how Marta took UBits from Colombia to YC, and then across Latin America. Wise Words From Dad Most entrepreneurs, especially those from Latin America, get actively discouraged by family members when they decide to leave a stable job to follow their dreams to start a business. However, Marta's Dad breaks this archetype and actually encouraged her to take the risk and launch her own university. He also has other pieces of useful advice for struggling entrepreneurs, and we should probably have him on the podcast someday! Listen to my interview with Marta to find out how her dad encouraged her to start her business, and what other entrepreneurs can learn from his advice. A Chance Encounter at a Bookstore Marta didn't choose Julian as a cofounder. A book did. They ran into each other during a shared quest for a book in Bogota in 2013 and soon realized their passions for education were well-aligned. In this episode, Marta explains how she and Julian became business partners and eventually decided to work on UBits together, all after meeting in a bookstore. Check out this episode of Crossing Borders to learn about Marta's experience choosing a co-founder, and how to find a good match while building a business. Tips on preparing for a YCombinator interview After participating in YCombinator and raising $2M from investors by Demo Day, Marta is a great resource to Latin American entrepreneurs looking to approach YC. She suggests that all Latin American YC candidates learn certain financial and startup terms in English before taking the flight to Silicon Valley. Listen to the rest of this episode to hear Marta's advice for learning cultural communication tools to help Latin American entrepreneurs master the Y Combinator interview. Empowering Women in Tech Being a Latin American woman in the tech industry can potentially create barriers when seeking funding from investors. In this episode, Marta discusses the pressure she felt as a female entrepreneur when she applied for YCombinator. With this in mind, she hopes to encourage and inspire younger women to challenge the paradigm and take advantage of the opportunities in tech. Check out this episode to hear how Marta plans to bring more women into tech and entrepreneurship in LatAm. Marta Forero and UBits were already unique for being one of very few Latin American companies to reach Y Combinator. As a female founder, she is a part of an even smaller minority of Latin American women to participate in the accelerator program. Her inspiring story of empowering Latin American workers through online education brought her from Colombia to Silicon Valley, then back to Peru and Mexico where UBits continues to expand. Check out this episode of Crossing Borders to hear Marta tell her story in her own words. Outline of this episode: [2:44] – What is UBits? In this episode, I had the honor of interviewing early childhood educator Jerilee Melo on the podcast! In our conversation, she share about her early upbringing in Southern California, her family's influence in directing her to a career in teaching, the founding of Classroom to Go, the overall impact of COVID-19 on early childhood programs and students, and so much more! To learn more about Jerilee's work, you can visit the Classroom to Go website at missjerireads.wpcomstaging.com or you can follow her on Instagram (@classroomtogo). BIO: Jerilee Melo is the founder and creator of Classroom to Go, a mobile classroom that provides preschoolers with the social interaction they were missing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Born and raised in Southern California, she knew at a very early age that she wanted to be a teacher, just like her mother and two of her grandparents. Jerilee loved watching The Elephant Show, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, Lamb Chop's Play-Along, and Reading Rainbow as a child and still looks to those shows for inspiration. She has had the privilege of working with children for more than 16 years and was able to learn and teach in a variety of schools with various approaches to education including Montessori, Gardner's Multiple Intelligences, and Reggio Emilia. Prior to teaching, I was a co-director at My Gym Children's Fitness Center and even developed their Preschool Prep (Jump Start) program which is now offered at locations domestic and worldwide. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/identitytalk4educators/support

Carmelo Anthony has been connected to the Lakers for nearly a decade, famously meeting with the team in 2014 to potentially join the team. Several more years passed before a deal came to fruition, but he's finally in purple and gold, albeit as a much different player than during his prime as one of the league's premiere superstars. These days, he's more of a outside shooting specialist than a full-blown scoring machine, and will have to pick his spots to assert himself. How effective can he be in season 19, at age 37? Andy Kamenetzky talks with Mike Richman of Locked On Blazers, who covered Melo's two seasons in Portland. What does Melo have left in the tank? Is he too big of a defensive liability to stay on the floor for extended stretches? And what would a ring mean to him at this stage? Afterward, Brian Kamenetzky joins the show, and they react to the interview. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Richman explains Melo's strengths as a scorer late in his career, and his overall presence offensively. SEGMENT 2: Richman breaks down Melo's weaknesses as a defender, along with his positive effect with team culture. SEGMENT 3: The Kamenetzkys react to the earlier interview.
