Who's really calling the shots in the surf industry? Is it the World Surf League (WSL)? The surf brands? The underground core lords? Or are we all just pawns in a wave-riding conspiracy?
A little over three years ago I interviewed Andre Borell, director of Envoy: Shark Cull, a hard-hitting documentary highlighting the archaic shark mitigation systems employed by the Australian government throughout Queensland and New South Wales. The doco, narrated by Eric Banna, was initially aired exclusively on Stan and three years down the line has a much greater global audience through many other popular media streams including Netflix. During today's episode, I grab an update from Andre and an excellent insight into his latest project, the Shark Stop wetsuit. Now, in its second round of funding, the Shark Stop wetsuits were originally designed by surfer Haydon Burford, who wanted to find a wetsuit similar to the impact protection for motorcyclists via Kevlar. Through his research and development, he created what we see now as the bite-resistant wetsuit Shark Stop. Tested by Flinders University on board the Rodney Fox vessel, Andre shares the impressive results and findings, so join me as we delve deeper into the creation, those results, the progress of the business, and the opportunities available for investors seeking to make a change. However, as he grew up transgender, the revealing nature of swimwear eventually made him uncomfortable and led him to give up his time in the ocean. It wasn't until he moved back to Orange County from San Francisco in 2010 that he was encouraged to get back into surfing. In San Francisco, Ben found a strong sense of acceptance within the LGBTQ+ community. The freedom to be open and authentic about his identity was transformative, and it inspired him to reconnect with surfing and begin shaping his own boards.Ben is passionate about inclusivity and accessibility in the surf industry. By sharing his story, he inspires others to pursue their passions, regardless of perceived limitations.Main Themes:Transgender Experience in Sports: "So it's weird that it was something that I wanted to do, but being transgender, when I hit puberty, like, that wasn't cool with me. Swimming things that I loved. You wear things that are rather revealing. Wetsuits, bathing suits." - Ben SotoSacred Surfboards and Economic Disparity: "There was a reason why the Hawaiians thought, is something sacred when they made surfboards. Not just anyone could make a surfboard. You had to be a priest. And there were rituals and ceremonies, there were launching parties, and it was a special thing. And it's gone from this wholly sacred thing that we took from these people and now make millions while they live in poverty." - Ben SotoSurfing and Spirituality: "When I go surfing and when I'm in the ocean, that is the closest I truly feel you can get to God's energy and the energy of the universe that flows within everything. When you catch that wave, that sensation, that feeling, there ions flying and atoms swirling around you in this energy that is coming from thousands and thousands of miles and the energy is what you're riding. This thing that's created and it comes all this way and at the very last moment of its energy, you get to play with it." - Ben SotoResources:Try a membership at The Surf Société with 7 days free.Shop Dip and get FREE shipping with the code "confessions" at checkout at Dipalready.comFollow us your host Laura Day: @confessionsofasurfladyFollow The Surf Société: @surfsociete for surf lady tips from #thesurflab inside the membershipFollow Ben on Instagram @sotosurfcraftVisit Ben's website sotosurfcraft.comSupport the Show.Confessions of a Surf Lady is supported by The Surf Société, our unique digital women's surfing platform where we come together to Learn More. At around 2 p.m. on March 23, 2015, a 911 call came in to the Vallejo, California police department from this man who sounded totally drunk or high on a drug, claiming that his girlfriend was missing and she had been kidnapped. But his story just didn't make any sense. When the officers got to this man's house, he looked deranged, and his house looked totally off and had this weird chemical smell. And then when they asked him to give them some information, he would launch into this bizarre story about men in wetsuits with lasers on their hands. But the police would follow up and actually launch an investigation, because this guy's girlfriend really was missing... and they would uncover a story that was even more bizarre than the 911 caller's story had been.Story name, preview & link to original YouTube video:#1 -- "Wetsuits & Lasers" -- After a man calls 911 to report that his girlfriend was kidnapped, police would have a hard time believing his wild and bizarre story - but that was just the beginning (Original YouTube link -- https://youtu.be/DCQ6jq5mcDM?feature=shared)For 100s more stories like these, check out our main YouTube channel just called "MrBallen" -- https://www.youtube.com/c/MrBallenIf you want to reach out to me, contact me on Instagram, Twitter or any other major social media platform, my username on all of them is @mrballenSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This weeks intro, the boys go in deep on wetsuit reviewing - the ones that we love and the ones we do not (over a 20 year surf career there have been a LOT of different suits!). We then go onto talk about surf brands and how woke a lot of them are trying to be - pushing a silly unconscious message of “what we're doing to the planet from buying x or y”. And rather than brands go down that road, more just offer what they offer without hypocrisy or negativity. Conversation then goes onto how distract-able our minds can be and teaches the “focus meditation” - in how when we focus entirely on being present it aids every area of our lives and in particular - activities that require better focus like surfing!!! In mind, body, stoke, Will talks about working on his ultimate weakness - his snap! Then utilising “exercise snacking” and getting the noticeable benefits for snapping onto his surfboard. Liam shares how he's working on his “weak point” - his legs and his recent training on his legs has made a huge difference to his cutbacks! Stay stoked guys! Will & Liam

Wetsuits. We all know how they work in theory. By trapping a thin layer of water between the suit and the wearer's skin, it allows you to stay warm underwater. But get too many holes in them and they'll start to leak…sometimes more than just water. One wetsuit owner was left metaphorically high and dry by his swimwear when it proved to be the smoking gun that connected him with the murder of his fourth wife. In July 1991, Cynthia Baumgartner died during a family trip to Lake Sammamish in King County, Washington. Her husband said she drowned in a tragic accident…one he couldn't prevent because he wasn't a strong enough swimmer. Today he's in prison…brought down by a neoprene suit. Hosted on Acast. Having too much or too little salt can make or break a dish, and as chefs know all too well, even the variety of salt used can dramatically impact flavors. Salt is a seasoning that we consume every day and is necessary for life, but how much do we know about its contemporary production? Although typically associated with warmer climates, Dingle Sea Salt co-founders Tom Leach & Moe McKeown have created a small batch Irish sea salt that not only rivals their Mediterranean competition, but is made in the most environmentally sound way possible. For our first episode of 2024, we speak with Tom & Moe about their love of surfing and its relationship to salt production; how it's possible to use solar evaporation to make salt in an Irish climate; and why it's important to grow their business thoughtfully, with intention and care for the natural world.Dyed Green is a project of Bog & Thunder, whose mission is to highlight the best of Irish food and culture, through food tours, events, and media. Can you live with the true cost of a Neoprene wetsuit? That is the question being asked by guests Lewis Arnold and Chris Nelson. Filmmakers who explore this question in their documentary The Big Sea. Surfing is a $10 billion global industry – built on the dream of carefree spirits, crystal clear waters and an even clearer connection to the natural world – has never been more popular. Surfing has posed as a champion of environmental issues. But there is a dirty secret… and people are dying. Lewis Arnold and writer Chris Nelson have followed the story from the communities of Cancer Alley in Louisiana, through to the wave rich beaches of California, to the heart of the surf industry and beyond.Through speaking with surf brands, industry leaders, surfers, cultural commentators and environmental campaigners, they ask: “Can you live with the true cost of a Neoprene wetsuit?” and, “Will surfing lead the charge of the outdoors industry and beyond, away from Neoprene, to a more viable alternative?”The Big Sea is a fully independent documentary that was filmed over three years in the USA, Australia, France, Spain, UK and Ireland. This week, we cover a proper wetsuit review and call out the brands we love (and don't love) and get talking about the old adage 'you get what you pay for'. We then discuss conquering bigger waves and the mindset that goes into them... The chat evolves onto 'waking up' - to becoming more aware of how you are, how you feel and how you think - and how closely related it all is to the breath! Stay stoked guys! Will x
In this episode, we take all of those topics that are posed on social media and give you the skinny on what is true and what is not true. And because one size doesn't fit all, there is often gray area with many of these topics, but we try to stick to fact or fiction. Let's see if you agree with us! And after you listen, send us a fact or fiction topic YOU want to see use talk about at iracelikeagirl@gmail.com. Topics covered today: You need a power meter to succeed on the bike Sleeved wetsuits are faster A swim skin is faster You should train all three disciplines equally for Swim/bike/run You need to do a 22 miler before a marathon or Ironman You need a coach. Hilly ironman courses are harder. Times on a course dictate how good of an athlete you are. You should only lift heavy in the off season.

When Flick is triple dog dared to touch his tongue to the frozen flagpole in his school's courtyard, it's his honor on the line. With his friends watching, he cautiously places his tongue on the pole, before realizing (a moment too late) that the warmth of his body is not enough to keep his saliva unfrozen and separate from the pole. Prof. Sean Newcomer of California State University in San Marcos is driven by the question of how to use scientific research to make surfing equipment better. Currently his main focus along with Prof. Jeff Nessler, has become how wetsuits can be improved. Recently Sean was quoted in Outside Magazine, “What the surf industry is marketing is not driven by science,” So the question has to be asked: Are we being fed bogus surf marketing? Sean is our guest for this episode. We discuss that question and dive into the science and testing of his research, the methodologies he uses and how our wetsuits could be improved. We get into his roundabout journey to becoming one of the foremost experts on investigating the impact of surf equipment on paddling efficiency, thermoregulation, and body mechanics. If you are a surf nerd when it comes to your surf gear, this a not to be missed episode of the Swell Season Surf Podcast. Let's be honest, most of us treat our wetsuits like crap. Wetsuits are expected to not only keep us warm but obey our bodies with every movement. From that layback slash you imagined yourself doing, to your front foot slipping and giving you the splits. Your wetsuit takes a beating and we are sure many of you have tossed your suits the minute it gets a tear in the seam. That's where our latest guest, Chris “Buddy” Pendergast, owner of Stitchbox Wetsuit Repair comes in… Stitchbox was founded in the fall of 2019 to help give our suits a longer life, reduce the amount of waste and change our perception of what is possible when we think we are done with our wetsuits. It all started for Buddy, after a trip he took with the Worn Wear Patagonia crew, repairing wetsuits up and down the Eastern Seaboard. Upon his return, Buddy rented a studio in Rockaway at NY's fabled Marina 59, and set up a repair shop to service the local New York surf community. Life happened, things changed, and he packed up and moved to Ventura, CA, where he currently lives and works. He was recently signed on as Noah Clothing's newest Field Team member and he is our guest on this episode of Swell Season. For more information on Stitchbox go give Buddy a follow on Instagram @stitchbox.wetsuitrepairThe Swell Season Podcast is recorded by The NewsStand Studio at Rockefeller Center in the heart of Manhattan and is distributed by The Swell Season Surf Radio Network.
