The Ghost Furnace - Episode 125 "Big Cat Bonanza" The only thing better than a cat is a big cat right? Well, that might be the case the majority of the time, but not so much if you are a resident, farmer or sheep in England. On this episode, we look at the big cat phenomena that has been developing and shifting over the last hundred years, or longer, in England's countryside. The unique element to this apparent cryptid is the scope and depth of the evidence, stories and investigations which have taken place over the years. Attacks, sightings and physical evidence leave a lot to comb through. What do you think is staking the moors of Old Albion? If you have a story you'd like to share, you can find us on Instagram and YouTube, or TheGhostFurnacePodcast@gmail.com
In episode 111 we continue our time in this former jail in the south west of England, in part-one you heard the detailed history of this site as well as the stories of those phantoms who are said to still be here, forever stalking these corridors and cells, long after their sentences would have ended. This time I will talk with two ladies who have spent much time here after dark, and I'm so excited for you to hear what they had to say. So join me, and let us ask Diane and Gem, just how haunted is Bodmin Jail? Thanks so much to Diane Chambers, who you can find on Twitter (I still can't bring myself to call it X) at @dianeechambers and on Instagram at mort_ifer_viva and Gem Tredwin who you can find on Twitter at @gemmatredwin and on Instagram at gemtredwin. In episode 110 we head to Cornwall, and turn our attention to an infamous building, which is by far the location I've had the most requests to cover on the podcast. As a result this will be the first of a two-part special. In this episode I will tell you all about this former prison on the edge of Bodmin Moor, why it was built, the terrible conditions that inmates endured, those who were executed here, and of course the phantoms that now haunt the site. I know for a fact that black cats are seen as witches' familiars. Yeah. So is it actually a bad thing if you see a black cat crossing your path in the UK. Some people still believe that, I have to admit if I'm on the way to an exam or if I'm doing something very important and a black cat tries to walk across my path, I do tend to........shoo it away, or trying to scare it away. You're like not superstitious but you're somewhat superstitious. I don't want to .You do not wanna jinx it.I don't wanna tempt fate. You don't wanna tempt fate. Yes, now to tempt fate here is a little bit like in Chinese we say宁可信其有不可信其无。 Exactly. Yeah, but you also got some lores about big cats not just cat cat. Well yeah, but these are based on modern folklore. So these are called ABCs, Alien Big Cats. Why alien, not alien ET. Alien as in foreign. So these creatures are described as being similar to panthers, leopards or pumas. Now this is a little bit of an urban legend. This is kind of more modern folklore. But there have been sightings of big cats in Britain and these have been reported for decades when cows, sheeps have been killed. They found strange paw prints in remote areas. This is so weird. I mean you don't have any wild live population of these cats. This is the thing, theories about the origin of these big cats, normally come from animals that were released after the dangerous wild animals act of 1976. So before then rich people could keep pumas, leopards. So now it's illegal to keep these exotic animals, even if you're super rich, Well you need to get a license. They probably can get a license. So some people say actually maybe these are the creatures that were released by the pet owners. They can't just release them on the streets of England. It does happen, it does happen. This is ridiculous. But they don't release them on the streets. For example, there's the Beast of Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, which is. Oh I think I've been there, Bodmin, there's a jail there, right? There's a jail. There is a very, very mysterious part of the UK, very bleak, lots of fog, lots of mist.Forests?
More lovely memories from Liz about Bodmin years ago, and before that, a little bit from me.
It is no secret that England has its share of gruesome and grizzly history. Although Cornwall is a stunning stretch of the British coastline, situated high on top of Bodmin Moor is the infamous Bodmin Jail, a foreboding and sinister building with a truly macabre past. Today historian and general manager Jess, takes us inside bloody Bodmin Jail to to meet some of the inmates who were never released, even after they died.
Cryptozoology. Cryptids. Beans and Gaz take a look at the UK's history of "mythical" beasts. Are they mythical or are they just yet to be fully discovered and understood. The Loch Ness Monster and the Beast of Bodmin are the two most prevalent examples but England has a fine history of hell hounds too. We look at the truth behind them and consider whether Vampires and Werewolves have their place in our history too. But it's TBR so there's our trademarked (it's not actually TD's, lawyers!) Leffe turn as we consider the place of Aliens, Time travellers and of course Inter-Stellar Travel. NB : We should have had a guest for this episode but they were unfortunately unavailable at the last minute. The opening music is "London Bayou" by Oscar Albis Rodrigues and the closing music is "BDS" by Lewis Pickford. tallboyradio.com
Bodmin Jail, located in Cornwall, England, is a historic prison that dates back to 1779. What happens when a passion for history and storytelling collides with the hospitality & leisure industry? Rob Cox, CEO, talks to us about the development of the heritage sites in their collection, including the trials and rewards of transforming an 18th century derelict prison into a luxury hotel and visitor attraction. The ethos of this business is to give guests an experience which can be educational, emotional and will stay with them for life, underpinned by both luxury and sustainability. But is this all achievable? Listen in to find out.
If you say 'moor' to most people, they might think of Wuthering Heights, Dartmoor, or Bodmin. You probably won't immediately think of the Town Moor that lies immediately north of Newcastle upon Tyne's city centre. While it's not filled with ghost stories, fairy legends, or tales of the Devil creating local landmarks, the Town Moor does play a role in the folk history of the city. It has hosted regular fairs for centuries, been an execution site for witches, and even been home to a smallpox isolation hospital. So what tales can this expanse of open land tell? Bodmin Jail can claim to be one of the most haunted buildings in Britain. Perhaps that's because of all the hangings that took place here. Or the postmortem punishment the jail dolled out to prisoners. Or perhaps it is because it's in Cornwall - land of giants, beasts and all things otherworldly.Maddy and Anthony are joined by Jess Marlton, manager of Bodmin Jail, to talk about life, death and afterlife at this unique 18th century prison. George is a retired gamekeeper in Herefordshire. He recounts his sighting of a local black panther, and many years before, a puma in a forest near Bodmin in Cornwall. George also discusses his regrets at shooting an adult black panther as well as what appeared to be a young one, in recent years in Herefordshire – local farmers were experiencing sheep kills at the time. George explains why both the shot cats matched the description of a leopard.George considers that from his experience, farmers and keepers may tolerate big cats if they avoid sheep predation. My special guest is Kirsten Honey Kirsten Honey, a passionate historian and paranormal expert, delves deep into the fascinating and chilling world of Bodmin Jail. Known for her thorough research and keen intuition, Kirsten has spent years investigating the haunting history of the notorious prison. With a strong commitment to preserving the stories of the inmates and staff, she provides an insightful perspective on the paranormal encounters that have taken place within the jail's walls. Kirsten's dedication to her work has earned her the respect of paranormal enthusiasts worldwide, making her a sought-after guest for discussions on historical hauntings and supernatural phenomena. As the Paranormal Manager of Bodmin Jail in Cornwall, Kirsten has the unique ability to pick up on the stories of the prisoners and the people that lived around it. But it's the unbelievable story of one man who committed suicide outside the gates that still shocks Kirsten today. What drove him to such desperate measures? Unravel the mystery and discover the harrowing past of this prison, if you dare. "These are real experiences. I think we need to look back a little further to appreciate what this building is."- Kirsten Honey "It's not just about the prisoners, because part of my work I talk about, don't forget that this building has land that it was built on". - Kirsten Honey Life in Bodmin JailDuring the period when Bodmin Jail was operational, harsh conditions and punishments were prevalent. Many crimes that would seem minor in today's context were met with severe penalties, such as imprisonment or even execution. The society of the time, heavily reliant on agriculture and food production, sought to maintain order and control through the use of these punitive measures. The experience of prisoners in Bodmin Jail was undeniably difficult, and their stories compel us to consider the societal pressures and mental health issues that may have contributed to their criminal activities. Kirsten Honey shared her perspective on the lives of the prisoners in the jail, remarking that understanding the nuances of the justice system of the time is essential to comprehending their individual journeys. She described the public's fascination with stories of the condemned and how that sensationalism perpetuated the harshness of punishments. Kirsten also touched on the harsh prison conditions within Bodmin Jail, including its eerie atmosphere, hard labor, and lack of communication. These elements combined to make a prison stay a truly fearsome experience for inmates. The Manx people of 1791 were notable for instigating court cases, and David Robertson gives us a fairly unedifying picture of how they proceeded. In our version in the Manx Gaelic of Bram Stoker's Dracula, once again Professor Van Helsing and Dr John Seward have to save the life of Lucy Westenra. With the Professor keeping watch over her, Lucy enjoys several nights of good sleep, and she quite enjoys the smell of garlic now! What is being covered up if anything? But what are your thoughts on these topics? Is the evidence described enough to conclude the Mothman was real or not? Or do you have alternate views? And what was the beast on Bodmin Moor after so many sightings? And do you agree with Tony and Tayo on these at all? Tune in and listen to the discussion - and please let us have your thoughts on the subject.Although we much prefer effusive praise

No one wants to go to jail. Life in jail can be dehumanizing, monotonous, terrifying, and this is in current day prisons. Historically, life in prison was much worse. Many people who walked in the doors of a prison never walked out, but also - many never left. Today we will be talking about violent deaths of adults and children. Listener discretion is advised. Autumn is the perfect time to explore forests and woods and in this episode of Inside Out we explore three beautiful examples. Each is a recent addition to our network of hire locations offering an all terrain mobility scooter (Tramper) for hire opening access to these beautiful locations for visitors who may otherwise struggle. Our first visit takes us to Coed y Brenin in North Wales. This stunning location in the south of Snowdonia provides the perfect alternative to the honeypots further north in the National Park. I speak to Graeme Stringer from Natural Resources Wales who introduces me to its long standing appeal. Wyre Forest (operated by Forestry England) is another new partner but has such a significant historic importance that it also provides the name for the local council. I speak to Emily Brooks about her love for this Worcestershire forest. Between 25th and 31st October first time users of the Tramper hire can receive a free 2 week Tramper hire - pre booking is essential. Our final visit is to Cardinham Woods in a secluded spot beneath Bodmin Moor in Cornwall. I discover the difference between a wood and a forest and why its a great place to visit year round. It was a cold grey day in late November. The weather had changed overnight, when a backing wind brought a granite sky and a mizzling rain with it, and although it was now only a little after two o'clock in the afternoon the pallor of a winter evening seemed to have closed upon the hills, cloaking them in mist. It would be dark by four. The air was clammy cold, and for all the tightly closed windows it penetrated the interior of the coach. The leather seats felt damp to the hands, and there must have been a small crack in the roof, because now and again little drips of rain fell softly through, smudging the leather and leaving a dark-blue stain like a splodge of ink. The wind came in gusts, at times shaking the coach as it travelled round the bend of the road, and in the exposed places on the high ground it blew with such force that the whole body of the coach trembled and swayed, rocking between the high wheels like a drunken man. The driver, muffled in a greatcoat to his ears, bent almost double in his seat in a faint endeavour to gain shelter from his own shoulders, while the dispirited horses plodded sullenly to his command, too broken by the wind and the rain to feel the whip that now and again cracked above their heads, while it swung between the numb fingers of the driver. The wheels of the coach creaked and groaned as they sank into the ruts on the road, and sometimes they flung up the soft spattered mud against the windows, where it mingled with the constant driving rain, and whatever view there might have been of the countryside was hopelessly obscured. The few passengers huddled together for warmth, exclaiming in unison when the coach sank into a heavier rut than usual, and one old fellow, who had kept up a constant complaint ever since he had joined the coach at Truro, rose from his seat in a fury; and, fumbling with the window-sash, let the window down with a crash, bringing a shower of rain upon himself and his fellow-passengers. He thrust his head out and shouted up to the driver, cursing him in a high petulant voice for a rogue and a murderer; that they would all be dead before they reached Bodmin if he persisted in driving at breakneck speed; they had no breath left in their bodies as it was, and he for one would never travel by coach again. Whether the driver heard him or not was uncertain: it seemed more likely that the stream of reproaches was carried away in the wind, for the old fellow, after waiting a moment, put up the window again, having thoroughly chilled the interior of the coach, and, settling himself once more in his corner, wrapped his blanket about his knees and muttered in his beard. His nearest neighbour, a jovial, red-faced woman in a blue cloak, sighed heavily, in sympathy, and, with a wink to anyone who might be looking and a jerk of her head towards the old man, she remarked for at least the twentieth time that it was the dirtiest night she ever remembered, and she had known some; that it was proper old weather and no mistaking it for summer this time; and, burrowing into the depths of a large basket, she brought out a great hunk of cake and plunged into it with strong white teeth. Mary Yellan sat in the opposite corner, where the trickle of rain oozed through the crack in the roof. Sometimes a cold drip of moisture fell upon her shoulder, which she brushed away with impatient fingers. She sat with her chin cupped in her hands, her eyes fixed on the window splashed with mud and rain, hoping with a sort of desperate interest that some ray of light would break the heavy blanket of sky, and but a momentary trace of that lost blue heaven that had mantled Helford yesterday shine for an instant as a forerunner of fortune.

In this episode, the Digital Interns at Bodmin Keep and the Museum of Cornish Life are speaking on the role of women during the Second World War. They offer two diverse perspectives on the topic: Charlotte tells the story of Beatrice Frederika Rathbone, an esteemed American-born British politician and former Conservative Member of Parliament for Bodmin during 1941-1945, while Joseph shares his research on role of the Women's Land Army in keeping Cornwall, and the United Kingdom, fed during the conflict. This podcast series is brought to you in partnership with Bodmin Keep as part of a national project developed by the Imperial War Museum (IWM). Within just a few months of each other two murders occurred close to Bodmin in the mid-19th century. The circumstances of both were strangely similar but for some reason one became a familiar part of our Cornish heritage, a tale told and retold, while the other was almost entirely forgotten . . . until now.
What a week !!! As you may all know I was suppose to be in South Africa on my holidays but it all went wrong again due to Covid. So anyway we decided to spend the whole of August down the caravan , which is nice BUT I think the whole of the UK is down Cornwall right now and the internet is as slow as a grandad driving a Honda Jazz .... On Wednesday 3rd August I was invited to be a guest on the Love Always Lisa Podcast, presented by Lisa Bailey-Brown. She records her episodes at a podcasting studio, just outside of Bodmin and I jumped at the chance to go down and record the episode in the studio and also have a good nose around. It was an amazing studio and Shane and the staff at Cornwall Channel Studio made me feel very much at home. So on this episode I wanted to give a shout out to Shane and the gang, talk about my new show sponsor and then play the episode 11 of Love Always Lisa , which I was the guest on . Bodmin Jail (alternatively Bodmin Gaol) is an historic former prison situated in Bodmin, on the edge of Bodmin Moor in Cornwall. Built in 1779 and closed in 1927, the large range of buildings is now largely in ruins, although parts of the prison have been turned into a tourist attraction. During its 150 years of incarceration of prisoners over 50 people were hung including women. Do ghosts still haunt this site? Let's explore this prison which now is a boutique hotel. Jeremy Summerly and the St Luke's of Chelsea Choir return to Gresham College to deliver a history of the Christmas Carol: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/the-19th-century-taming-of-the-christmas-carol-from-st-erth-to-truroAt the end of the Georgian era, a revivalist collection of Christmas music was published by the MP for Bodmin and another by a Cornish solicitor. Half a century later, a Festival of Nine Lessons with Carols was celebrated on Christmas Eve 1880 in the cathedral at Truro. This lecture, with live musical illustrations, shows how the rustic English carol was preserved in the villages of the West Country and later served back to Cornish urbanites as representative of the height of ecclesiastical sophistication. The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/the-19th-century-taming-of-the-christmas-carol-from-st-erth-to-truroGresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597.
