Lee Chen is a familiar face on US TV, but her own story is more impressive & incredible than the many shows she’s appeared in. For starters, she’s probably the only successful Hollywood actor who got their start in a "Chairman Mao Thought" propaganda performance troupe towards the end of the Cultural Revolution in China. She was born in Inner Mongolia, was a founding-class member of the Johns Hopkins Chinese Program at Nanjing University, then moved to the US for grad school - earning two Master’s degrees - and began a dual professional life as an academic and an actor. She landed in Chicago after grad school, and fell into studying acting at the famous Piven Theater Workshop. Lee worked and studied for years, moved to Hawaii for a second Masters, did every theater production she could, and finally moved to Hollywood. Today, Lee has built an eclectic film, TV, & theater career with roles ranging from the dramatic to the absurdly funny. She also worked diligently over a 20 year period to move her ENTIRE family - one by one - over to the US from China. I was lucky to meet Lee when she accepted a role in a small film I produced, and when I heard her incredible story I knew I had to get her on the mic to share it with you, too. She also talks about growing up in a household that was intellectually and theatrically oriented; her days at the Piven Theater Workshop while in her teens; why she thinks that everyone has an "opera inside"; the visual images that become the starting point for her plays, and whether starting a play, "Dead Man's Cell Phone", in which the title character is deceased at the start, was a handicap; the impact of receiving a MacArthur Foundation "genius grant" on her life and career; the unorthodox gift that gave rise to "In The Next Room or the vibrator play" and why she chose to subtitle the play; and she responds to the suggestion that as her career has progressed, her plays have contained their flights of fancy more with each successive work. Aimee Garcia stars as tough young helicopter pilot Marisa Benez in NBC’s new ensemble medical drama series, "Trauma." Best known for her role as Andy Garcia's daughter and George Lopez’s niece, Veronica Palmero, on "The George Lopez Show," she is currently the only Latina in her generation to be on syndicated television. In 2007, she was nominated for both an Alma and Imagen Award for "Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series." Garcia is an actress of Mexican and Puerto Rican descent, born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She began at age 7 as a professional dancer in Paul Mejia’s "Cinderella" at the Auditorium Theater, and by age 12 was dancing 20 shows a month as Clara in "The Nutcracker" which led to her first commercial as a dancer. She then began taking acting lessons at the Piven Theater Workshop, whose alumni include John Cusack, Joan Cusack and Jeremy Piven. In high school, she won the Chicago Tribune’s Best Actress Award for her portrayal of Maria, in the immigrant saga "Journey of the Sparrows." She also starred in "Island of the Blue Dolphins," which was nominated for seven Joseph Jefferson Awards. Garcia’s success in Chicago theater gave her the opportunity to land screen tests for roles in Baz Luhrmann’s "Romeo and Juliet" and the biopic "Selena." Garcia graduated as a triple major in economics, journalism and French from Northwestern University. There, she built her own summer theater curriculum, and combined her singing and dancing talents to nab the lead role of Diana Morales in "A Chorus Line" for Broadway choreographer Mitzi Hamilton.
