Garage punk trio Radkey were formed in St. Joseph, Missouri in 2010 by brothers Dee, Isaiah, and Solomon Radke, who grew up listening to their music-mad father's vast collection of punk, rock, and metal records. The band was formed after Isaiah lent Dee his bass guitar so he could play in a local covers band. Seeing his brother on-stage, Isaiah decided that he wanted in on the action; youngest brother Solomon also expressed an interest and took up drumming, and Radkey were born. After rehearsing in their bedroom for months, they got early breaks when, for their very first gig, they managed to bag a support slot with '90s funk-metal pioneers Fishbone, and got the opportunity to record their first EP, Cat & Mouse, in New York at Wreckroom, the studio owned by Entourage star Adrian Grenier. Produced by the Giraffes' Damien Paris, the EP, released in 2012, generated significant Internet buzz, and the band went on to play a number of high-profile shows, including the Afro-Punk Festival, South by Southwest, and Chicago's Riot Fest. While initially attracting attention for the novelty of their being black, once they got up on-stage and started to rock, any trivial considerations were forgotten; Dee's vocal similarity to a young Glenn Danzig and Isaiah's remarkable resemblance to Phil Lynott probably didn't hurt either. To promote their second EP, 2013's Devil Fruit, they crossed the pond to play at the U.K.'s Download Festival and appeared on the BBC's Later with Jools Holland. By this point, they were getting so popular that their father quit his job as a loss-prevention officer at Wal-Mart to become their full-time manager. Recorded in San Francisco, California and Sheffield, England with producer Ross Orton (Arctic Monkeys, the Fall, Jarvis Cocker), the band's much-anticipated debut album, Dark Black Makeup, arrived in the summer of 2015. The following year, Another Century Records reissued it with bonus tracks under the title Delicious Rock Noise. ~ John D. Buchanan, Rovi Learn more about your ad choices. What happens when you're massively rich, famous, and rewarded for living a life of over-indulgence?If you're lucky, you awake one day to realize that a life of sex, drugs, rock & roll—a life you were convinced would make you happy—only leaves you empty. You then embark on a Victor Frankl-esque search for meaning that ultimately leads to spiritual awakening and a path towards purpose, self-actualization, and service. This is a story that recurs on this show in many forms.Today's version of that story comes in the shape of Adrian Grenier. You know Adrian as an actor—he's appeared in many films and television projects—but of course, most well known for his portrayal of Vinnie Chase in the HBO hit show Entourage, a dizzying and meta experience for Adrian that in so many ways came to parallel his own life. But Adrian has evolved past this archetype of adolescent id, trading Hollywood for a ranch outside Austin, Texas. He's matured into a regenerative farmer, environmentalist, and founder of the Lonely Whale Foundation. He's also an impact investor, leading DuContra Ventures as co-founder and Chief Experience Officer.A heart-centered community builder who cares deeply about our symbiosis with self, each other, and the natural habitat we share, today Adrian shares his worthy story. It's about the hidden, ugly truths that lay beneath the modern American dream. It's about the work required, and beauty to behold, in wrestling with the soul. It's about endeavoring to connect with and express that which is more fundamental and meaningful. But most of all, it's about finding ways to be in service to a better world. To read more click here. You can also watch listen to our exchange on YouTube. Valente's Comfort Me with Apples.Despite being a novella of less than 130 pages, it crams in everything from the whole rotten tradition of awful things – from the book of Genesis, via fairytales and the Gothic, all the way up to the most cutting-edge dystopian sci-fi. This tiny tale of a perfect small town and a perfect marriage, all undercut with the sour tang of wrongness. Catherynne talks in detail about the various strands that she has knotted together into this story. We cover religion and the potential for evil within, Disney towns and cartoon police, and we discuss why Bluebeard and his locked cellar door is such a key and recurrent trope in domestic horror. And, as ever, I take the chance to go off on a frothing political rant.Enjoy! Comfort Me with Apples is published by Tor on November 9th Check out Mark Kermode's rant about the movie Entourage – to prepare for the Hallowe'en special.Support the show on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/TalkingScaredPodCome talk books on Twitter @talkscaredpod, on Instagram, or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com. Download Novellic on Google Play or Apple Store.
