RFI revient pendant l'été boréal sur les grands boycotts de l'Histoire, quand David fait trembler Goliath en usant de l'arme économique. De l'Irlande à Israël en passant par l'Afrique du Sud ou l'Inde, du lait en poudre au pétrole en passant par les bus de Montgomery, le boycott transforme le consommateur en citoyen, un mouvement d'expression et de colère qui fait pression sur les puissants. En 2019, l'acteur américain George Clooney fut à l'initiative d'un boycott qui fit reculer Bruneï sur la peine de mort en cas d'homosexualité ou d'adultère.  C'est une voix que tout le monde ou presque connait : « What else ? »  En 2019 George Clooney ne met pas sa notoriété qu'au service d'une célèbre marque de café. Sa voix, l'acteur américain l'utilise aussi pour défendre les droits humains.  Le sultanat de Bruneï, petit État d'Asie du Sud-Est à majorité musulmane, est sur le point d'instaurer la charia. La loi islamique prévoit — entre autres — la peine de mort pour les homosexuels et les personnes coupables d'adultère.  Le 28 mars, George Clooney appelle dans une tribune à boycotter les intérêts du sultan, en l'occurrence « neuf des hôtels les plus prestigieux du monde » détenus (via l'Agence d'investissement de Bruneï) en partie par le monarque. Il signe une tribune dans le magazine américain Deadline : « Cela fait des années que je pratique des régimes meurtriers, j'ai appris que vous ne pouvez pas leur faire honte. Mais vous pouvez faire honte aux banques, aux financiers et aux institutions qui font des affaires avec eux. Soyons clair, chaque fois que nous prenons une chambre ou que nous organisons une réunion que nous dînons dans l'un de ces neuf hôtels, nous mettons de l'argent directement dans la poche d'hommes qui choisissent de lapider et de fouetter à mort leurs concitoyens homosexuels ou accusés d'adultère. »  À lire aussiBrunei punit l'homosexualité de lapidation, levée internationale de boucliers Ambiance La tribune est à la une des journaux télé. Du chanteur britannique Elton John à l'ex-championne de tennis Billie Jean King, les stars relaient l'appel au boycott. De la star de télé Ellen DeGeneres au patron de Virgin Richard Branson. Les États-Unis, l'Union européenne, l'Australie protestent, mais rien n'y fait : comme prévu, la loi entre vigueur le 3 avril 2019.  Manifestations à Londres Dans les rues de Londres, quelques centaines de Britanniques se réunissent devant l'hôtel Dorchester lié au sultan. Aux cris de « honte à vous », ils appellent le gouvernement à rompre tout lien diplomatique avec Bruneï.  Le tollé s'étend aux acteurs économiques. La Deustche Bank interdit à ses employés de séjourner dans les hôtels épinglés. Plusieurs entreprises annulent leurs événements dans les établissements liés au Sultan.   Le 6 mai, l'appel est entendu du côté de Brunei À l'occasion du début du ramadan le sultan Hassanal Bolkiah s'adresse à son peuple : « Nous pratiquons depuis plus de vingt ans un moratoire de facto sur la peine de mort qui relève la loi héritée de l'empire britannique. (la common law). Ce moratoire s'appliquera également aux affaires qui relèvent de la charia ». En d'autres mots, le monarque recule sans pour autant vraiment céder puisque, si les châtiments prévus contre les homosexuels et les personnes reconnues coupables d'adultère ne seront pas appliqués, la loi islamique, elle, reste en vigueur.  En juin dernier, l'un des plus fervents activistes du boycott, l'Américain Jake Duke Mason saluait ce moratoire comme « une victoire majeure ». Mais rappelait que le combat continue pour une « abrogation totale de la loi ».  

En 2018, un mouvement de boycott spontané lancé sur les réseaux sociaux cible trois marques perçues comme symboles de la vie chère au Maroc. Parmi elles, Centrale Danone, filiale du géant français de l'agroalimentaire, subit de plein fouet la colère des consommateurs. Chiffre d'affaires en chute libre, image écornée et retrait de la Bourse… Retour sur une crise qui a marqué les esprits. L'histoire commence discrètement, presque anonymement, sur Facebook. Quelques messages appellent les Marocains à boycotter trois marques accusées de pratiquer des prix excessifs : le carburant des stations Afriquia, l'eau minérale Sidi Ali, et les produits laitiers de Centrale Danone. L'un des slogans partagés sur les réseaux résume l'état d'esprit des initiateurs : « Le boycott est plus fort que la manifestation. Ce n'est pas un acte ponctuel, c'est une résistance quotidienne ». Très vite, le mouvement prend de l'ampleur. Selon plusieurs sondages relayés à l'époque, 57 % des Marocains informés du boycott affirment avoir cessé d'acheter au moins une des trois marques concernées. En tête de cette fronde pacifique, la classe moyenne, étranglée par la cherté de la vie et de plus en plus frustrée face à l'immobilisme des autorités. À ce moment-là, le Maroc représente 45 % du chiffre d'affaires africain du groupe Danone. Un marché stratégique. Mais pour l'économiste Abdelghani Youmni, cette réaction populaire est le symptôme d'un malaise plus profond : « La classe moyenne marocaine, qui a mis seize ans à se construire, est en train de s'effriter. Elle perd pied à cause du coût de la vie, du crédit, de l'éducation, du transport, de la santé… L'économie marocaine crée de la richesse, mais en dehors des Marocains ». Ventes en chute libre, emplois supprimés, image écornée En mai 2018, après un mois de silence, le directeur général de Centrale Danone au Maroc, Didier Lamblin, prend la parole sur Atlantic Radio, une station privée marocaine. Le ton est grave : « L'impact est significatif sur nos ventes, sur nos parts de marché. Nous sommes obligés de prendre des mesures regrettables : suspendre une partie des volumes collectés chez nos 120 000 éleveurs ». Les conséquences sont immédiates : des centaines de travailleurs licenciés, des coopératives de lait déstabilisées, et une colère qui monte encore d'un cran. Début juin, des employés de l'entreprise manifestent devant le Parlement à Rabat : « Le gouvernement est responsable. Ce n'est pas aux salariés de payer les conséquences de la hausse du coût de la vie », scande un manifestant. Face à la crise, Danone tente une opération reconquête. En septembre, la marque annonce qu'elle vend désormais le litre de lait à prix coûtant, une mesure sans précédent. Mais rien n'y fait : les ventes continuent de chuter. Au total, Danone accusera une perte de 178 millions d'euros de chiffre d'affaires par rapport à l'année précédente. Quelques mois plus tard, Emmanuel Faber, PDG du groupe, revient sur cet épisode marquant : « Nous vendions notre lait au même prix que nos concurrents. Mais Centrale Danone était perçue comme proche de la famille royale et de l'élite marocaine. Cela a facilité son boycott. » Danone lancera par la suite une gamme de produits « solidaires » à bas prix, puis se fera discret. En 2020, Centrale Danone se retire de la Bourse de Casablanca. Les résultats financiers de la filiale ne sont désormais plus publics.
