North Macedonia's new president, Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, has sparked a diplomatic crisis with Greece following her decision during her swearing in ceremony to refer to her country simply as “Macedonia” rather than the constitutional name “North Macedonia.” Prime Minister Mitsotakis slammed her decision, warning that further violations of the Prespes Agreement could jeopardize Skopje's ambitions for EU membership. John Psaropoulos, an independent journalist based in Athens and Al Jazeera's Southeast Europe correspondent, joins Thanos Davelis to look into this latest diplomatic spat and its broader implications for Athens, Skopje, the Prespes Agreement, and the region. Zoran Zaev announced his resignation as North Macedonia's prime minister and leader of the ruling Social Democratic party after a landslide defeat in local elections late on Sunday. The move raises important questions about what lies ahead for North Macedonian politics, with the nationalist opposition, which is opposed to the Prespes agreement with Greece, calling for early elections. Tom Ellis, the Editor in Chief of Kathimerini English Edition, joins The Greek Current to discuss his recent op-ed, where he explains what Greece should look out for following the election results in North Macedonia and why it's important for the Greek government to project the message that it will uphold the Prespes Agreement in full.Read Tom Ellis' latest op-ed in Kathimerini: North Macedonia: Zaev's resignation, Greece's messageYou can read the articles we discuss on our podcast here:Greece toughens restrictions on unvaccinated as cases spikeGreece reports record high daily COVID-19 infectionsGreece can make significant contribution to green transition, Mitsotakis tells COP26Greece's Mitsotakis Signals Climate Law Ready for Approval This Week
During the early stages of the Euro 2020 soccer championship in June, aside from the games on the pitch, we also saw political issues emerge. One of those was related to the Prespes agreement, and we saw the North Macedonia national soccer team's use of the name “Macedonia”. Prime Minister Zaev also ended up apologizing for a tweet where he used the term “Macedonia.” These moves sparked a reaction from Greece. Tom Ellis, the editor in chief of Kathimerini English edition, joins The Greek Current to discuss his latest op-ed in Kathimerini where he looks at this latest incident, the broader issues at hand, and explains why implementation of the Prespes agreement is important for Greece's interests. We also look at President Biden's recent executive order targeting individuals allegedly contributing to the destabilization of the Western Balkans, which includes those undermining deals like the Prespes Agreement.Read Tom Ellis' op-ed in Kathimerini: The Prespes agreement should not be violated
