In January of 1996 Greece and Turkey came close to conflict when the Imia crisis erupted. The US played a critical role in preventing a military escalation through Assistant Secretary of State Richard Holbrooke, and the US ambassadors in Athens and Ankara. Thomas Niles, the US ambassador in Athens at the time who passed away this week, spoke openly about the crisis in the years that followed, noting that the US had made a “big mistake” in not taking a position on Greek sovereignty in the Aegean. Tom Ellis, the editor in chief of Kathimerini's English Edition, joins Thanos Davelis as we look back at the Imia crisis of 1996, the US role in preventing a military confrontation, and its lasting legacy today. You can read the articles we discuss on our podcast here:Thomas Niles, US envoy during Imia crisis, dies at 85Stournaras: Crisis may be Europe's chanceU.S. Announces Deal to Share Ukraine's Mineral WealthUS and Ukraine sign agreement creating investment fund after months of negotiations

Tom Ellis joins me on episode 132 for another look into the life and career of the legendary Paul Butterfield. Butter gained access to the Chicago blues scene at a young age when his lawyer father carried out pro bono work for some of the musicians there. The black blues musicians took a paternal interest in Paul's musical development, none more so than Muddy Waters who knew Butter from around the age of sixteen. Butter later returned the favour after having made his own name. He gave something back to Muddy by recording the Fathers and Sons album with him in 1969, followed by a second album with Muddy, The Woodstock album in 1975.Tom then goes on to tell us about how Butter changed his sound during the middle part of his career with the release of the two Better Days albums in 1973, producing possibly the first Americana albums, and seeing Butter having developed into a more nuanced harmonica player.Links:Tom article on Substack platform: https://ellist.substack.com/p/down-by-the-riverArticle on the Super Cosmic Joy-Scout Jamboree concert (Father and Sons): https://bobsblog73.wordpress.com/2015/04/16/super-cosmic-joy-scout-jamboree-april-1969/Fathers and Sons album blog by David Hawkins: https://paulbutterfield.blogspot.com/2014/03/37-fathers-and-sons.htmlButter on the Woodstock album blog by David Hawkins: https://paulbutterfield.blogspot.com/2016/10/61-muddy-waters-woodstock-album.htmlVideos:Mannish Boy in Last Waltz concert: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGG-oBrmzbQButter on Midnight Special: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZhfIOuiPe4Bonnie Raitt live with Butter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZOdeROUz2UPlaying Why Are People Like That on David Letterman show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDvdTabtRN0Podcast website:https://www.harmonicahappyhour.comDonations:If you want to make a voluntary donation to help support the running costs of the podcast then please use this link (or visit the podcast website link above):https://paypal.me/harmonicahappyhour?locale.x=en_GBSpotify Playlist: Also check out the Spotify Playlist, which contains most of the songs discussed in the podcast:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5QC6RF2VTfs4iPuasJBqwT?si=M-j3IkiISeefhR7ybm9qIQPodcast sponsors:This podcast is sponsored by SEYDEL harmonicas - visit the oldest harmonica factory in the world at www.seydel1847.com or on Facebook or Instagram at SEYDEL HARMONICAS--------------------------------Blue Moon Harmonicas: https://bluemoonharmonicas.comSupport the show

All eyes are on Prime Minister Mitsotakis as Greeks wait to hear who he plans to nominate as Greece's next president. While the position is a largely ceremonial one, who is selected will send a message across the political spectrum, and will likely set the tone for the remainder of Mitsotakis' term as he will have to decide whether to appease his party's base or pick a candidate with a broader appeal. Tom Ellis, the editor in chief of Kathimerini's English Edition, joins Thanos Davelis to look into this story, breaking down the dilemma facing Mitsotakis and the message it sends about Greek politics. “Often when people write or make movies about romances with young adults, I think they are very flippant about it and don't take it seriously. But I think that those friendships and romantic relationships are some of the most important ones because they really set the stage for the rest of our lives. If your first relationship is incredibly toxic and damaging, it can take you years to figure out that that's not normal, and that that's not actually how relationships are meant to be.”Meaghan Oppenheimer is a screenwriter, executive producer, and showrunner who tells stories driven by flawed, deeply human characters and the relationships between them. Welcome to a new Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast. This week I'm chatting with Jina An & Shirley Song, the composers behind Netflix's brilliant adult animated series ‘Exploding Kittens'.If you haven't yet caught ‘Exploding Kittens', the series is inspired by the beloved card game from Matthew Inman of The Oatmeal webcomic, Elan Lee, and Shane Small. After a meeting in heaven, there is a general consensus that Earth sucks, so God (voiced by the wonderful Tom Ellis from ‘Lucifer') gets fired and sent to Earth to reconnect with humanity. The catch? He's trapped in the body of a chubby house cat. As part of Godcat's rehabilitation, he moves in with a dysfunctional family and tries to solve their problems, but ends up spending a lot of time chasing laser pointers. And to top it off, Godcat's next-door neighbour, who is also a cat, turns out to be none other than his nemesis, the Antichrist. It is brilliant, hilariously funny, and Season 1 is all on Netflix right now!Jina and Shirley have been composing together pretty much since college, and were tasked with creating a soundtrack that captures the show's explosive energy. This also involved them touching on a huge array of musical genres like 8-bit nostalgia, energetic Cajun flair, heavy metal rock, and both choral and orchestral scores to bring the madcap adventures and quirky characters to life.Outside of ‘Exploding Kittens', the duo are also known for working on the beloved Netflix series ‘XO, Kitty', and have a number of other projects coming up which we talk about in the interview.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. After decades of negotiations and acrimony, Athens and Skopje signed the Prespa Agreement in 2018 that effectively put an end to the Macedonia name dispute and opened the way for North Macedonia to join NATO and start the process toward EU membership. Since the election win of the VMRO-DPMNE in early May, however, its leadership has taken a nationalist turn that could put this deal at risk. Tom Ellis, the editor in chief of Kathimerini's English edition, joins Thanos Davelis to look into what he has called a destabilizing nationalism from Skopje, and break down what the broader risks are for not just North Macedonia and Greece, but the region. You can read the articles we discuss on our podcast here:Destabilizing nationalism in North MacedoniaPoland and Greece urge EU to create common air shield, says Polish PMVon der Leyen backs Polish, Greek calls for EU air defense shieldMitsotakis tells Zelenskyy Greece will continue to support KyivUkraine renews military aid request

Mack / McKinsey (Gina Rodriguez), Adam (Damon Wayan Jr.), Brannagan (Augusta Prew), and Little (Joel Courtney) are all friends that help each other score one night stands with strangers. That is until Nick (Tom Ellis) comes into Mack's life and she wants to turn her one night stand into a drawer in Nick's apartment. This is unchartered territory for the friends as they're not accustom to going to the next step. A movie which could only possibly be made by a writer/director because if another person had their hands on it, it would absolutely be a half hour shorter. The pacing is bad. The story is bonkers. The lead characters are boring. The film quality is poor. Their depiction of Native Americans is pretty racist. The politics are extremely suspect.BUT BOY DID THEY KNOW HOW TO CAST SOME MURDER ANGELS!Christopher Walken is Gabriel, a rogue angle on a mission to start a new war in heaven. Viggo Mortenson is Lucifer. You think you know what that looks like by reading that sentence? I promise you don't. Is he sexy? I guess that depends on your response to being threatened with eating your mother's feces. We've all got our things, right? Tom Ellis he ain't. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Local elections are taking place on Sunday in Greece, and Prime Minister Mitsotakis has been on the road campaigning for New Democracy candidates across the country. This is seen as the first big test for the government after Prime Minister Mitsotakis was overwhelmingly re-elected this summer, and comes after a few months of heavy criticism over its handling of multiple crises - from wildfires to floods. It's also the first test for Stefanos Kasselakis, the new leader of SYRIZA, Greece's main opposition. Tom Ellis, the editor in chief of Kathimerini English Edition, joins Thanos Davelis to look at what these elections mean for Prime Minister Mitsotakis, SYRIZA's new leader, and the country. Based on the results from the May election, New Democracy is once again set to win a comfortable majority later this month - something the latest polls confirm as well. As we approach the June 25th elections, the questions then are whether this will be enough for New Democracy to form a single-party government, and what the opposition will look like as PASOK and SYRIZA battle for dominance of Greece's center left. Tom Ellis, the editor in chief of Kathimerini's English Edition, joins Thanos with the latest analysis from Athens ahead of this second round of elections.
