For five months Serbs have been taking to the streets, resulting in an unprecedented anti-corruption protest movement. The movement's sustained momentum has put longtime Serbian President Alexandar Vucic under pressure, and has seen him step up efforts to quash the protests. Professor James Ker-Lindsay, who has worked extensively on the EU, the Balkans and Southeast Europe, joins Thanos Davelis as we look into why Serbs have taken to the streets over the past months, what this means for President Vucic, and the broader spillover effect these protests could have on the region. You can read the articles we discuss on our podcast here:Serbia's unfinished revolutionSerbia's president issues threats to silence student protestsEU confronts Vučić as protests rage in SerbiaECB cuts rates on weak growth, markets bet on more easingF-16 upgrade negotiations with the US continue as key differences persist

Even before its rebirth as a nation in the 1990s, Serbia had acquired a reputation abroad as Russia's stalwart Slavic ally in the Western Balkans. Yet, as Vuk Vuksanović argues in Serbia's Balancing Act: Between Russia and the West (Bloomsbury, 2025), two centuries of history and the 25 years since the fall of Slobodan Milošević tell a more nuanced story. "When it comes to Russia's interests,” he writes, “there are no sacred cows in Serbia-Russia relations". Governments in Belgrade will be courted and then discarded depending on Moscow's needs, and they know it. For their part, the Serbs depend on Russian political support in their campaign for a face-saving settlement of the long-running Kosovo dispute but know their economic success hinges on their ties to the EU and the US. Belgrade must "manipulate the superpower rivalry to secure economic resources from both superpowers and its political strategic autonomy". Vuk Vuksanović is a foreign policy expert at the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy, an associate of the Central and South-East Europe Programme at LSE IDEAS, and a prominent media commentator on strategy in the Balkans. *His book recommendations were Rival Power: Russia in Southeast Europe by Dimitar Bechev (Yale University Press, 2017) and Why War? by Christopher Coker (Hurst, 2021). https://youtu.be/KpI9AW3ymyI The British- French Guarantee of Poland and Rumania in 1939 Fourth. The fourth abysmal loss of statesmanship was when the British and French guaranteed the independence of Poland and Rumania at the end of March, 1939. It was at this point that the European democracies reversed their previous policies of keeping hands off the inevitable war between Hitler and Stalin. It was probably the greatest blunder in the whole history of European power diplomacy. Britain and France were helpless to save Poland from invasion. By this act, however, they threw the bodies of democracy between Hitler and Stalin. By their actions they not only protected Stalin from Hitler but they enabled him to sell his influence to the highest bidder. The Allies did bid but Stalin's price was annexation of defenseless people of the Baltic States and East Poland, a moral price which the Allies could not meet. Stalin got his price from Hitler. Yet Hitler had no intention of abandoning his determination to expand in Southeast Europe and to destroy the Communist Vatican in Moscow. But now he must of necessity first neutralize the Western Democracies which he proceeded to do. The long train of the hideous World War II started from the blunder of the Polish guarantees. Roosevelt had some part in these power politics but the record is yet too incomplete to establish how much. Churchill, not yet in the government, had contributed something by goading Chamberlain to desperate action aft er his appeasement at Munich. - Herbert Hoover, Freedom Betrayed Watch on X Watch on BitChute Watch on Rumble Watch on Odysee

And this is your News Flash. News Flash is brought to you by our friends at IntelStor. If you want market intelligence that generates revenue, then book a demonstration of IntelStor at IntelStor.com. Norway's sovereign wealth fund, Norge's Bank Investment Management, has committed one billion dollars Billion dollars to Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners fifth flagship renewable energy fund, CIV. The fund invests in offshore and onshore wind, solar farms, grid and distribution, and also storage. Investments will be equally split between North America, Western Europe, and developed countries in Asia Pacific. But why is Norway putting a billion dollars into CIP? What's the plan for that fund? Philip Totaro: It's a good question, Allen. I, I think Nordisk Bank has actually had a fairly decent track record of diverting some funds and, and investing them into renewables funds. Including some much smaller previous investments in with CIP and, and other project development companies or investors in, in renewables. The reason that they're doing it is because and again, as you mentioned, this is the sovereign wealth fund of Norway. They're really just looking to diversify their investment stream beyond just oil and gas. And so I, I don't know what led them to this relationship with CIP to say, you know what, billion dollars, here you go. But that's that's a lot of money and a lot of trust in being able to invest it and, and see a return that I'm sure Norges Bank is, is looking for. Joel Saxum: Yeah, I think it's stable cash looking for a stable investment. And right now you, as you seen the big, the black rocks and the other pension funds these, what would be the equivalent of the size of like the sovereign wealth fund of Norway, putting money into renewables and into infrastructure for the future. Something to remember here is that CIP, the directors of CIP, and the direction of that company, they're all ex Ørsted. So when you see CIP and Orsted kind of playing in the same arenas, it's because they're from the same stock. The Late Bronze Age collapse was a time of widespread societal collapse during the 12th century BC associated with environmental change, mass migration, and the destruction of cities. The collapse affected a large area of the Eastern Mediterranean (North Africa and Southeast Europe) and the Near East, in particular Egypt, eastern Libya, the Balkans, the Aegean, Anatolia, and, to a lesser degree, the Caucasus. It was sudden, violent, and culturally disruptive for many Bronze Age civilizations, and it brought a sharp economic decline to regional powers, notably ushering in the Greek Dark Ages. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Late_Bronze_Age_collapse

How did England's upstart navy devastate the mighty Spanish Armada? Why did the loss upset the global world order for the next 350 years? And as the world's most powerful, richest man, how annoying must King Philip II have been for Queen Elizabeth I to not let him put a ring on it?   Links To Further Yer Book-Learnin'   Queen Elizabeth I (1533–1603) was Queen of England and Ireland for 45 years. She was cray-cray for Sir William Raleigh, but remained a virgin her whole life. Or so the Royal Marketers say.   King Philip II (1527–1598), also known as Philip the Prudent, was a real resume padder: King of Spain; King of Portugal; King of Naples and Sicily; jure uxoris King of England and Ireland; Duke of Milan; and Lord of the Seventeen Provinces of the Netherlands. His dad still wasn't impressed.   Charles Howard (1536–1624), was known as Lord Howard of Effingham. Was this because of his royal title, or a love for ham, or a reputation for over-acting?   Sir Francis Drake (1540–1596) was an English explorer, privateer, and naval hero who circumnavigated the world from 1577 to 1580. But if you're signing up for the Drake Disciples fan club, he also joined in slaving voyages, soooo…   Hernán Cortés de Monroy y Pizarro Altamirano (1485–1547) was a Spanish conquistador who's synonymous with the saying “burn your ships.” Which might explain why there's no Cortes Caribbean Cruises.   Ferdinand Magellan (1480–1521) was the Portuguese explorer who planned and led the first circumnavigation of the planet. Flat-Earthers are not fans.   The Habsburg Monarchy ruled big chunks of Europe from 1282 to 1918. The family dynamic was super-juicy, and ripe fare for a telenovela.   The Portuguese Empire (1415-1999) was made up of overseas colonies, factories, and territories. By the early 16th century the empire stretched across every continent that didn't have a South Pole.   The Holy Roman Empire was officially the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. But for its almost 1,000 years, only geeks called it that.   The Ottoman Empire, better known as the Turkish Empire, spanned much of Southeast Europe, West Asia, and North Africa from the 14th to early 20th centuries. It could have ruled more, but its leaders kept stopping to put their feet up.   Martin Luther (1483–1546) was the seminal figure of the Protestant Reformation as the author of the Ninety-Five Theses. Apparently nobody told him he only needed to write one to finish his undergrad.   The encomienda was a Spanish labor system that rewarded conquerors with the labor of non-Christian peoples. The laborers were supposed to benefit from the conquerors' military protection, who made them an offer they couldn't refuse.   The British Royal Navy fought the French-Spanish fleet in The Battle of Trafalgar on Oct. 21, 1805. Outnumbered and outgunned, Lord Nelson steered his ships into the enemy fleet's flank in a brilliant maneuver. This earned him a 20-0 ship-sinking rout, and later to H.I. history expert Matt Roberto's man crush.   The Age of Exploration (15th to 17th Century), a.k.a The Age of Discovery, mostly overlapped with the Age of Sail. Can you historians just pick a name, already?

The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine entered its 3rd year and an end still seems to be far away. While the destruction of infrastructure is ongoing, millions of people were forced to flee, the population is traumatized and, on the battlefield, there seems to be a stalemate. Yet, the EU - countries are still voicing their support for Ukraine. However, in the US the narrative is slowly shifting towards the necessity of entering negotiations in light of US elections later this year. On the other hand, the sanctions regime is still upheld and, at least in the short-term, the expected results have not materialized. How could an end to the war look like? Who could be negotiating considering Russia still didn`t abandon its maximalist demands. What role has the so-called global South and how is the economic relationship between Russia and China developing? What does the destruction and the loss of population mean in the long-term for Ukrainian economy and what role does the EU-perspective man in this context? With the global shift of attention towards the war of Israel against Hamas in Gaza, is peace still possible in Ukraine? Charles Warner is a veteran and social anthropologist studying at the University of Leuven, Belgium. His research interests primarily revolve around war veterans (a.k.a. the emerging field of “Veterans Studies”), strategic peacebuilding, and post-conflict dialogue/resolution in Southeast Europe. Within this research, he incorporates or centers visual art and poetry/prose-poetry/narrative nonfiction to express ethnographic engagements, research insights, temporality and polyvocal (re)presentation. His PhD project, tentatively titled "The Veterans Eclectic: Engaging voices of past war & visions of future peace in Former Yugoslavia," is guided by two research questions: 1) Do former combatants embrace the identity of "veteran," maintain veteran-oriented organizations, and connect internationally after the battlefields have gone silent? If yes, how? 2) How might mapping and understanding cross-border veteran relationships influence current or new approaches to peace and stability between former battlefield foes? In pursuit of these questions, Charlie conducted two+ years of relational ethnographic fieldwork and participant observation alongside war veterans in Bosnia, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia and Kosovo. This fieldwork has generated new insights into veteran culture and relations, their social visibility (or lack thereof), transnational relations, performative materiality, and veteran considerations of the future. Speaking more broadly, this research seeks to strengthen collaborations between social anthropology and the political sciences while contributing to Veterans Studies (thus challenging North Atlantic-centric narratives and hegemony within an emerging field) and informing new paradigms of peacebuilding in former Yugoslavia and beyond. The research shared by Charlie Warner with the Scuttlebutt podcast is supported by the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO) and the University of Leuven, Belgium. John Psaropoulos, an independent journalist based in Athens and Al Jazeera's Southeast Europe correspondent, joins Thanos Davelis to look at how this case is impacting Greece's ties with Albania, Tirana's ambitions to join the EU, and the Greek minority in Albania.Read John Psaropoulos' latest here: Greeks denounce Albanian trial of mayor-elect as politicalYou can read the articles we discuss on our podcast here:Beleri trial postponed again for October 24European Union offers a new growth plan to Western Balkans that partly opens access to single marketMitsotakis stresses need to prevent conflict escalationFury grows in Turkey against Israel, fresh protests stagedPro-Gaza protests in Turkey target Israeli Consulate, McDonald's
