James Early, former Director of Cultural Heritage Policy at the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage at the Smithsonian Institution and board member of the Institute for Policy Studies, joins us in a conversation about the legacy of artist, activist, and civil rights leader Harry Belafonte on his 94th birthday, COVID vaccine diplomacy and how it is reflective of the global capitalist system by perpetuating inequities vis-a-vis poor communities in the U.S. and the Global South, vaccine development and distribution by Cuba and other countries, and how both U.S. parties are practically fighting against the $15 minimum wage. In our Miss the Press segment, hosts Michelle Witte and Bob Schlehuber talk about missing Chuck Todd, Jen Psaki tap-dancing around contradictions regarding Biden’s statements on the Khashoggi investigation, The Washington Post’s act of misdirection in U.S. relations with despots, and Rahm Emmanuel’s take on the minimum wage fight. Part 1 - How a former Breitbart reporter learned the truth about Zionism

Lee Stranahan, Republican radio host, journalist and former Breitbart reporter once thought that his peers at Breitbart - Joel Pollak and Ben Shapiro - are typical of observant Jews' attitude toward Israel, and that anti-Zionism was “a leftist thing,” directly tied to one's position in the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Then one day, Lee watched a video of Rabbi Yaakov Shapiro and close to 20,000 Orthodox Jews opposing Zionism as wholly un-Jewish and rooted in anti-Semitism. Judaism to these devout Jews is a religion, not a nationality, and there is no such thing as a “nation-state” of the Jews, or Jewish nationalism (aka Zionism). This struck a chord with Lee and led him as a journalist to investigate further into the masses of mainstream Orthodox Jews who reject Zionism, and whose anti-Zionist activity is ignored by the mainstream media. His search led him to astounding revelations about the origins and ideology of Zionism, and to the discovery of a whole world of Orthodox Jews, who, independent of Israel's politics, refuse to tie their Jewish identity to any political construct – and certainly to a foreign country. This is Lee's story, Part 1.

Then Shane and Jamarl were joined by Peter LaVelle, who discussed the Democratic Convention and agreed that while Joe Biden did not screw up his acceptance speech at the virtual DNC, it lacked any important substance. Peter said he expected no better from the Republican Convention coming up next week and that neither party seems to want to deliver on the populist promises that they make in order to get elected. LaVelle also pointed out his disappointment in Donald Trump for an inability to deliver on promises and said that he thinks both political parties in America are more accountable to the donor class than they are to the people. In the second hour, the hosts were joined by investigative journalist Lee Stranahan, who discussed his relationship and that of other Breitbart reporters to Steve Bannon, who was arrested yesterday and faces fraud charges along with three others. Lee said that Bannon treated employees badly and also that his own personal politics seem inscrutable and tied more to the pursuit of money than any ideological position. He also gave details of the We Build the Wall project that is at the heart of Bannon's fraud indictment and said Bannon took over the project after it began making money. Then the hosts were joined by Danny Haiphong, who said that as a leftist, he thinks it is time for the progressive and socialist left to abandon the dream that they are going to significantly change American politics through the Democrat party. Danny pointed out the Democrats go so far as to criticize people who belong to other parties, such as the Green Party, for not voting Democrat. Danny said real political change in America only comes through street action and that it's time for the left to reconsider its strategy. Then in the third hour, Dr. Linwood Tauheed said that while he is not a Trump supporter, he believes that Trump's announcement of executive orders to deal with Congressional inaction on economic issues caused by COVID-19 was a brilliant political move. Manila argued that teachers should be allowed to take leave time if they are concerned about the risk of infection. In the second hour, Shane and Jamarl talked to Laith Marouf about the aftermath of the explosion in Beirut and made statements that the devastation may have been the result of an attack. They also discussed how the explosion exacerbated problems for Beirut citizens, who are already impacted by the weakened Lebanese economy and political turmoil. Adding to the problems, Lebanon is having to deal with sanctions imposed by the United States, and the explosion at the port is having a major impact on the ability to get vital goods into the country. In the third hour the hosts were joined by investigative journalist Lee Stranahan who discussed the latest developments in the Russiagate scandal. Stranahan described the long relationship between Bill and Hillary Clinton, members of the Shearer family, and Clinton's Oxford roommate Strobe Talbott. Cody Shearer created the dossier that became the basis for the Steele dossier and Derek Shearer was an advisor for Ziff Brothers Investments, who were at the heart of the Trump Tower meeting allegations. Kaine says that the measure is an important reassertion of Congress’s power to declare war, but still voted with the vast majority of senators to approve a higher military budget than President Trump asked for. Troy Price, the chairman of the Iowa Democratic Party, resigned yesterday in the aftermath of the vote-counting debacle that shook the presidential caucus more than a week ago. And it wasn’t just the failure of a vote-counting app that forced Price out. The caucus was also rife with counting errors and inconsistencies that could still affect the outcome of the race. 01022018 Fake news. A phrase that was once tied to tabloidesque style super market papers has now become a common staple in today's lexicon. Like many elements that unfortunately flood our daily routines, this has turned to a point to where we now just gloss over when we hear the term. Seeking to combat the ever failing reputation of media, the guest on this week's episode of The Malliard Report has been a pioneer and trail blazer for the citizen journalist movement that is quickly gaining hold in this seemingly turbulent time. This week Jim welcomes to the show Lee Stranahan. Lee is an American journalist, talk show host, and advocate for citizen journalism. Hosting a show on the Russian owned Sputnik new agency, Stranahan was originally picked up by the network after being let go by Breitbart for covering the controversies surrounding the Chobani yogurt company and their usage of Syrian refugee workers harboring tuberculosis and numerous sexual assault cases.Originally moving to Los Angeles to work as a television producer and graphic artist, Lee made his way into reporting during the 2007/2008 writers guild strike. Having started out by making political parody videos on YouTube poking fun at prominent figures of the time (Mitt Money, Rudy Giuliani, etc.) he quickly gained interest and was soon picked up by the Huffington Post. While his edgy humor was the catalyst for his quick success, it was not looked upon as fondly by HuffPo and Lee soon found himself in the circle with Andrew Breitbart. After a handful of firings/rehirings and disputes over his stance on  the death of Alton Sterling, Lee parted ways with Breitbart and is now co-host of Fault Lines on Sputnik Radio. The passion for citizen journalism is very evident within Lee and this is a really great episode.
