The buzzword in Brussels is simplification. In reality it's a euphemism for sweeping deregulation and it marks a dramatic U-turn for the European Union. For decades, the EU prided itself on being a regulatory superpower, capable of extending its influence through protective and demanding regulation. That's now changing. A year ago Mario Draghi, the former president of the European Central Bank, dusted off the timeworn idea of cutting red tape. Draghi's message was eagerly embraced by many EU leaders, many from conservative and far-right parties, and many of them increasingly aligned with Trumpian ideas on blocking migrants, ignoring the environment and canceling overseas aid. Draghi's ideas have since snowballed. In the works are measures to water down laws on everything from technology and chemicals to farming and finance. Executing on those plans, and more, is European Commission president Ursula Von der Leyen. She's been using the deregulation mantra to deflect criticism from her far-right rivals and to placate US tech giants and Donald Trump and his threats to abandon Europe militarily. To be sure deregulation is having a moment. In Argentina, in India, and in the US where Elon Musk's DOGE dismantled entire agencies, almost certainly illegally, and where Russ Vought at Trump's budget office says wants to put civil servants in trauma. The approach in Europe is far less blunt and belligerent. But there are significant parallels according to Alberto Alemanno, the law professor at HEC Paris and the founder of The Good Lobby. Alberto sees an ideological and methodological alignment across the Atlantic that includes the sidelining of legislators, the privileging of executive fiat, and the possible DOGE-style downsizing of the European Commission. Alberto also warns that von der Leyen is "pushing towards illegality" by bundling together deregulatory measures in so called omnibus laws that bypass the usual channels of evidence-based policymaking and of democratic consent. The European Ombudsman, Teresa Anjinho, has opened an investigation into the omnibus process. But her opinions are non-binding. Meanwhile EU governments are pushing for continuous rollbacks, and von der Leyen has promised to deliver. But there is a deeper unease here, that simplification is not just about deregulation, or pandering to Trump, or the far right, rather that simplification will end up undermining the capacity and legitimacy of EU administration itself. A pair of US academics have described this phenomenon as ungoverning, discrediting institutions and the machinery of government and creating circumstances where enforcement and the rule of law suffer and authoritarians can thrive. Alberto doesn't see the quite the same deliberate campaign in Europe as in the US. But he warns that von der Leyen's willingness to take a chainsaw to previously agreed laws — and to act as little more than the executor of member states' demands — is a kind of dereliction of duty that risks permanently weakening the Union at a moment when many Europeans are looking for answers beyond national borders. As Alberto puts it: the EU is becoming ungoverned — by its own political class.Support the show

Chiny i geopolityczna gra o metaleW drugiej części rozmowy Orzeł odniósł się do rozpoczętego w Pekinie czwartego plenum Komunistycznej Partii Chin.

Knight compares it to modern media deception surrounding COVID and other political lies. 02:28:14 – Mothers, Media, and Awakening to WarThe character Betty, a patriotic mother, mirrors America's awakening as she discovers suppressed speeches by Muhammad Ali and Martin Luther King Jr. condemning the war. Knight and Bradley discuss how media censorship concealed moral opposition. 02:37:42 – CIA, Opium, and the War MachineKnight and Bradley expose General Westmoreland's alleged role in global opium trafficking and how CIA operations in Vietnam, Laos, and Italy funded covert wars. They argue mainstream media knowingly concealed this vast corruption network. 02:40:49 – The Night War Vietnam StoryBradley explains that America never “won a single 24-hour period” in Vietnam. The Vietcong fought exclusively at night while U.S. troops retreated daily, contradicting the myth that the U.S. “won every battle.” 02:43:55 – Lessons for America's Future WarsBradley likens Ho Chi Minh to George Washington, saying defenders always win when fighting for home. Knight connects these lessons to modern U.S. interventions in Iran and Venezuela, warning that America's leaders keep repeating Vietnam's mistakes. 02:55:49 – The Real Domino TheoryKnight concludes that while America fought communism abroad, Marxism quietly conquered its schools, bureaucracy, and culture—turning the “domino theory” inward. Another very fun banger. A brief discussion on the pacification of Sports and how most Millennials are insufferable twats is followed by a larger geopolitical discussion surrounding Europe, Youth Protests, federalization and spending targets. Trust me it's some great on the fly analysis. We talk AI politicians installed in Albania (yes, this is real), and future of the country of Georgia.
In this episode of the FSR Policy Briefcase (Season 2, Episode 8), hosts Leonardo Meeus and James Kneebone reflect on Ursula von der Leyen's 2025 State of the Union address and on the conference marking one year since the Draghi report, where Leo took part in a panel of experts. The conversation revisits Draghi's diagnosis of Europe's competitiveness challenges and considers how it holds up in today's shifting geopolitical and economic context. They explore progress under the Commission's Clean Industrial Deal, particularly efforts to reduce energy prices, and assess the priorities for the year ahead. The hosts also examine von der Leyen's call to accelerate the phase-out of Russian fossil fuels, the role of electrification in driving down costs and improving the security of supply, and her proposals for more flexible EU funding and decision-making. Finally, they reflect on how these policy directions relate to Europe's values and the consistency of the EU's agenda in a global context marked by instability elsewhere. Recorded in September 2025.

China rebuked the European Commission for unwarrantedly and wantonly imposing sanctions on Chinese entities in its previous packages of sanctions against Russia over the Ukraine crisis, based on the false allegation that they are "supporting" Russia's military. However, the commission targeted more Chinese entities in a sweeping new package of sanctions against Russia over the weekend. In its 19th package of sanctions since the start of the Ukraine crisis, the European Commission added 12 Chinese enterprises to its blacklist, targeting refineries, oil traders and petrochemical companies. Subject to approval by all EU member states, the sanctions purportedly demonstrate that "Europe is increasing its pressure on Russia", according to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. China is not the creator of, nor is it a party to the Ukraine crisis. It remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting peace talks and playing a constructive role in multilateral efforts to realize a political settlement of the crisis. By trying to demonize the normal exchanges and cooperation between Chinese and Russian entities as efforts to "support" Russia's military, the European Union is simply trying to shift the blame onto China for its own failure to end the conflict. The commission has apparently realized that Ukraine, despite the support it is receiving from the United States and the EU, is unlikely to defeat Russia on the battlefield. And that the bloc cannot impose comprehensive sanctions against Russia without harming its own interests. It is using sanctions against third parties, such as China, as a form of virtue signaling and as an attempt to appease the White House. It is a display of the EU's willingness to do the US' bidding on the issue, rather than as a genuine effort to end the conflict. The US administration has called on the EU to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on China and India, as part of its efforts to pressure Beijing and New Delhi to cut their purchases of Russian oil and end their "aid" to Russia. This is another sign of the US' exploitative approach to the EU on the Ukraine crisis and tariffs. The US administration recently admitted the US has made profits from selling weapons to the EU over the Ukraine crisis. By meting out punitive measures against Chinese companies on such spurious grounds, the European Commission is doing nothing but seeking to show the US that it is answering its call without imposing a blanket tariff hike. The commission's unjustified move against China is shortsighted as the US is instrumentalizing Europe's vulnerabilities for its own geopolitical gains. Von der Leyen's alignment with Washington — accepting a US baseline 15 percent tariff on most EU goods while promising large EU purchases of US energy and defense — is intended to cement transatlantic unity. But in practice it leaves the EU exposed to loss of leverage in trade talks, domestic criticism over economic imbalance, and a weakened ability to defend its interests independently amid the Ukraine crisis and US pressure. Sanctioning the Chinese entities undoubtedly harms Sino-EU relations and represents another ill-advised move of the EU. For its own good, the EU should uphold its strategic autonomy rather than making decisions to try and claim the moral high ground and accommodate the US administration's agenda. The development of China-EU relations over the past 50 years has proved that China and the EU are partners, not rivals, still less enemies. There is no territorial dispute, no geopolitical conflict, nor any fundamental conflict of interests between the two sides. China has always viewed its relations with the EU from a strategic and long-term perspective. It is hoped that the EU will work with China in the same direction to ensure that cooperation remains the underlying feature of China-EU relations. To end the Ukraine crisis, it is necessary for the US and the EU to refrain from seeking selfish gains and not add fuel to the fire by further exacerbating tensions. The sanctions imposed by the EU, as well as those by the US, over the Ukraine crisis have not only fueled tensions, but also seriously disturbed global supply chains. History clearly shows that such sanctions, devoid of legitimacy in international law, have never been solutions to burning issues, not to mention the goal of founding a lasting, workable and balanced security mechanism for Europe. strategic autonomy (of the EU)n.(欧盟的)战略自主 /strəˈtiːdʒɪk ɔːˈtɒnəmi (əv ðə ˌiː ˈjuː)/19th package of EU sanctions (against Russia)n.欧盟第19轮(对俄)制裁方案/ˌnaɪnˈtiːnθ ˈpækɪdʒ əv ˌiː ˈjuː ˈsæŋkʃnz (əˈɡenst ˈrʌʃə)/
Budget 2026 must include tax measures to support green energy innovators, according to Hydrogen Ireland. With less than four weeks to go until October 7th, the organisation has identified supportive fiscal frameworks as crucial elements of the drive to promote emerging opportunities. CEO of Hydrogen Ireland, Paul McCormack, says the right framework of technologies and personnel with the right skillsets must be in place - and that requires support for funding now: "With the right approach, hydrogen projects could be having an impact on Ireland's energy landscape in three to five years. To achieve that, our hydrogen economy needs to be underpinned by a progressive tax strategy - one that rewards innovation, de-risks investment, and aligns fiscal tools with our climate ambition. We engage with dozens of investors and international organisations that all recognise Ireland's potential as the epicentre of the hydrogen revolution. What we need is the right support framework to convince them to invest here. We need to provide tax reliefs that will help convince people that Ireland is ready to lead the way towards a just transition, with hydrogen as a central element on that journey". Paul McCormack's comments follow the Taoiseach's comments in a letter to the EC President Ursula von der Leyen, expressing concerns about the impact of rising energy costs on semiconductor chipmakers, and calling for 'interim measures' to be taken to address the situation. CEO of Hydrogen Ireland Paul McCormack welcomed Taoiseach Micheál Martin's decision to raise the issue directly with Ms von der Leyen and sees the move as 'a strategic inflection point': "If Europe wants to lead in high tech, semiconductors, big data and AI, it must also lead in clean, affordable energy. That means coupling hydrogen innovation, grid reform, and industrial resilience into one cohesive vision. "Thanks to progress made to date, Ireland is in a prime position to harness the full potential of green hydrogen. We're calling on the government to create the kind of fiscal environment that will capitalise on the work done so far and allow innovators the space to accelerate progress towards a cleaner energy future for ourselves and our European neighbours". The global hydrogen dialogue will take centre stage at the World Hydrogen Technologies Convention in Dublin from October 21 - 23. Hosted by Hydrogen Ireland, WHTC is one of the best-known conventions in the fields of hydrogen energy and fuel cell technology. Speakers will include Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine Timmy Dooley TD, Tony O'Reilly, Founder and CEO of dCarbonX and President of the International Association for Hydrogen Energy, Dr Ayfer Verizoglu. Sponsors include ESB, Gas Networks Ireland and the Japan Atomic Energy Agency.

In this episode of The Sound of Economics, we discuss the State of the Union address that Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, delivered on 10 September 2025. Bruegel's Rebecca Christie, Simone Tagliapietra, Reinhilde Veugelers and Jeromin Zettelmeyer discuss whether the EU is ready to meet the moment. How can Europe boost its economic and geopolitical independence? What steps are most needed to improve productivity and green growth. Did Von der Leyen give a good speech, given the difficulties of asserting European influence in the aftermath of the U.S. recent trade talks? They discuss how Europe can integrate and boost its economy to prepare for a better future. Europapodden ringar in de tyngsta och viktigaste beskeden i årets linjetal – State of the union. President Donald Trump said on Monday that India has offered to reduce its tariffs on U.S. goods to zero. Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform: "They have now offered to cut their Tariffs to nothing, but it's getting late. They should have done so years ago."Authorities confirmed that more than 800 people were killed and thousands more injured as a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck southeastern Afghanistan late on Sunday. Rescuers are battling to reach remote, mountainous areas cut off from mobile networks along the Pakistani border, where many mud-brick homes collapsed in the quake.A European Union spokesperson said on Monday that the Global Positioning System of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's aircraft was jammed while en route to Bulgaria on Sunday, though it ultimately landed safely. Bulgarian authorities said they suspect Russia's involvement in the incident. The incident occurred while von der Leyen was on a four-day tour to EU member states in Eastern Europe.
SEASON 4 EPISODE 5: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: THE DISASTA IN ALASKA The Disasta in Alaska - starring the cheeseburger-eating surrender monkey. We have, to quote Churchill, suffered a defeat, without a war. Because we forget we don’t MERELY have an evil, deranged president, we have an evil, deranged president who is also a moron. Now, Trump - Putin’s butt boy, his errand carrier - will deliver Putin’s message to Zelensky in Washington. He will be accompanied by EU President von der Leyen, NATO Secretary General Rutte, Presidents Macron of France and Stubb of Finland, Prime Ministers Starmer of the U-K and Meloni of Italy, and Chancellor Merz of Germany. Trump will be accompanied by a large selection of mirrors. I suspect Trump will parrot what he remembers of Putin's message (whatever Trump's staff didn't leave on the printer of the business center at the Hotel Captain Cook in Anchorage) and tell Zelensky that the way to achieve an end to the war in Ukraine is: to lose. The best thing Zelensky and the Europeans could say in response would be to state that they are withdrawing their recognition of the government of the United States of America because it is just too effing stupid. From the Disasta in Alaska to the Occupied territory of Washington, D.C. And don’t forget what Trump today DOUBLING the number of National Guard in DC with new recruits from Ohio, West Virginia, and South Carolina (all of them, far more violent than DC) means: It means he’s read his cratering polls number and declared war on the United States of America. Also: we rejoin the Trumpstein Cover-up Scandal, already in progress. B-Block (30:02) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: International Fop Piers Morgan FINALLY does a journalism - posts a meme of Trump on his way to meet Putin and Trump is wearing kneepads - and then DELETES the first journalism of his life? Pam Bondi proudly admits The Deep State has defeated her fascist DOJ with nothing more than a Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki Sub. And the battle of the most overrated people in their field: neither CNBC's Andrew Ross Sorkin nor House Democratic mis-Leader Hakeem Jeffries repeat Andrew Cuomo's canard that Democratic NYC mayor nominee Zohran Mamdani lives in a rent-CONTROLLED apartment when he, like HALF of all NYC renters (myself included) lives in a rent-STABILIZED apartment. Sorkin repeats this FOUR times, Jeffries doesn't correct him, and Jeffries who is theoretically a congressman from New York STILL refuses to endorse his own party's nominee, chosen by its MEMBERS, for mayor OF New York. Sorkin should be fired and Jeffries should resign. C-Block (43:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Somebody wrote last week that Aaron Sorkin's HBO "Newsroom" version of some of what happened to Countdown on MSNBC was the worst fictionalization of journalism in the English language. I think that's an exaggeration. It wasn't nearly that good.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
