Ep #165 with Jim Matus and Richie Barshay - World Fusion duo. Jim Matus plays the laoutar - an electric Greek Laouto which is tuned like a mandocello. He has a unique sound on the instrument. Richie Barshay is a multi-percussionist playing tabla, frame drum and other assorted percussion on this episode. This is a live session recorded at BCTV, one of the first we have done in a long time. We recorded 4 videos of live improvisational music which are featured on this episode. When creating a radio playlist one has to ensure how to sequence songs in a meaningful way. The dynamics of their interaction therefore becomes critical. There should be not too many fast pieces played back to back, nor not too many ballads one after the other. Fast and slow, soft and loud should take turn. Ideally the playlist should lead to a climax through one or more crescendos of songs. This week we each song in the playlist contains a remarkable crescendo... Two hours of jazz featuring only compositions that start softly and then build up and build up sometimes slowly some times fast, but always inexorably. The playlist features crescendo-meisters like Ibrahim Electric, Kresten Osgood, The Lounge Lizards, Michael Blake, Ben Allison, Michel Portal, Esbjörn Svensson Trio, Jaga Jazzist, Marc Johnson's Right Brain Patrol, David Binney, Richie Barshay, Jon Irabagon, Tim Berne, Nik Bärtsch.

Argentinian pianist Emilio Solla calls his band The Tango Jazz Conspiracy, but that's about the only genre label you'll find him using for his music -- and he's not even sure what "tango jazz" really means. On his album Bien Sur! (Fresh Sound, 2010), Solla is joined by A-list musicians such as Chris Cheek, Richie Barshay, Victor Prieto and Jorge Roeder. In this interview, Solla talks about his early years in Argentina and his subsequent move to Spain; how Astor Piazzolla paved the way for Solla and his contemporaries; and how drum master Billy Hart came to be a guest on Solla's album.
