"Looking back to look forward" could be the motto of this playlist. It kicks off with a blaxploitation tinged scorcher of a song from an upcoming Charles Kynard re-release, followed by a live performance in which Enemy (Kit Downes, Petter Eldh, James Maddren) marks a decade of music making by playing some of their key tunes. Also included an unearthed gem featuring a 2009 session by Russ Johnson, Christian Weber, Dieter Ulrich, and albums that mark new directions in the work of Matt Ulery, Ches Smith and Dan Weiss, respectively. The playlist features Charles Kynard; Enemy, Kit Downes, Petter Eldh, James Maddren; Matt Ulery; Russ Johnson, Christian Weber, Dieter Ulrich; Ches Smith [pictured]; Dan Weiss. AI-labor saving tool or existential threat? On his new recording Server Farm, saxophonist and composer Jon Irabagon contemplates the potential threat and promise of this omni-present technology. For this recording Irabagon augments his regular quartet consisting of keyboardist Matt Mitchell, bassist Chris Lightcap, and percussionist Dan Weiss with violinist and vocalist Mazz Smith, trumpeter Peter Evans, guitarists Miles Okazaki and Wendy Eisenberg, bassist Michael Formanek, and percussionist and electronic musician Levy Lorenzo. Imitating AI, Jon spent several years doing a deep dive into the musical output of his collaborators, mining their entire catalogues for ideas that create the foundation of the music on this exciting recording.

Award winning vibraphonist Yuhan Su is another Gary Burton/Chick Corea-inspired musician, lured away from classical to the art form where improvisation reigns, jazz. This Taiwanese-born, New York based artist, left her homeland pursuing a jazz education at Berklee College of music, a frequently told story. Yuhan Su draws on her strengths to survive the intense transitions as a single woman migrating to the US to learn a completely different style of music, knowing no one, new to the language and cultures. And she plays the vibraphone, not an easy instrument to lug around given she's carless.  Yuhan is an avid composer whose quality was recently recognized in Taiwan with the Golden Melody Award, the Taiwan-equivalent of the Grammy. Yes, a big deal! She won it for the composition “Hi-Tech Pros and Cons” from her recent album, Liberated Gesture. In this episode, we talk about these topics among others that delve into her compositions, her passion for composing, themes reflecting personal experiences and social issues. And, of course, there's music, this time from Liberated Gestures (Sunnyside Records). The Yuhan Su Quintet includes: Yuhan Su-vibraphone, Matt Mitchell-piano, Caroline Davis-alto saxophone & poetry reading (“She Goes to a Silent War), Marty Kenney-acoustic bass/electric bass, and Dan Weiss-drums. The episode opens with “Hi-Tech Pros and Cons” (6:27), you'll hear “She Goes to a Silent War” (poetry read by Caroline Davis) about two-thirds into the conversation, then close with “Siren Days (7:31). Thank you for listening to Strictly Jazz Sounds. Enjoy and listen to live jazz. Steve Braunginn Photo by TeFan Wang

Today, Ali and Asif discuss the new hit Netflix series ‘3 Body Problem' (1:19). They start off with a minor debate on how to pronounce the name of ‘Liu Cixin', the writer of the book upon which the show is based. The guys then discuss how the show was created by David Benioff and Dan Weiss, the creators of ‘Game of Thrones', after a few other failed ventures. They discuss how China is a major setting in the book and series as well as the series opening scene depicting the ‘Cultural Revolution' in China in the 1960's. Then both Ali and Asif give their thoughts on the show.    Then the guys discuss Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) (24:44). Asif starts out by discussing the differences between alcoholic and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Asif discusses how NAFLD occurs in 1 in 3 people (!) and 10% of children. He then discusses how NAFLD is linked to Type 2 diabetes, obesity, hypertension, heart disease and high cholesterol/triglycerides. Ali then asks Asif about how it is diagnosed, including blood tests and ultrasounds. They then discuss the cornerstones of management, especially lifestyle modification.    The opinions expressed are those of the hosts, and do not reflect those of any other organizations. Dan Weiss a joué notamment auprès de Lee Konitz, Chris Potter, Sylvie Courvoisier, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Linda May Han Oh, John Zorn. On pourrait s'écrier « Aux abris ! Daredevil is not the only Netflix series confirmed now as MCU canon - the entire Defenders saga can be seen within the MCU Timeline on Disney+. This is a big deal for fans of the Netflix shows who have called for them to be canonized for years. The Defenders shows fit into the timeline starting with Daredevil after I Am Groot and ending with The Punisher before Doctor Strange. There's also a rumor Deborah Ann Wolf and Elden Hansen are set to return as Karen Page and Foggy Nelson in Daredevil: Born Again.  Trekkies will soon see their favorite franchise back on the big screen with director Toby Haynes on the bridge in the captain's chair. Haynes recently directed several episodes of the Star Wars hit show Andor. With Seth Grahame-Smith writing and JJ Abrams' Bad Robot producing, it has been 8 years since the last Star Trek movie - though this one is to take place decades before the 2009 Star Trek movie plot. Paramount has had recent Star Trek success in the television world, streaming Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, Picard, and Discovery. Though this prequel may not show the Chris Pine-led cast we are used to seeing, there are still plans to have a final movie with that crew in the future.  We keep talking about Tom Cruise and now for an even bigger announcement…a Top Gun 3 movie is officially in development to bring back that loving feeling. Top Gun: Maverick writer Ethan Kruger is already writing for the new installment and sources report director Joe Kosinski will also be back to pilot the film. This news comes to us shortly after the partnership announced with Cruise and Warner Bros. Discovery. Top Gun: Maverick raked in an astounding $1.5 billion in 2022 and Cruise looks like he's willing to continue the legacy with a third film. Rumors are flying that DC Studios will begin their search for a Supergirl actress soon.  In the mix for frontrunners we have Milly Aycock of house of the dragon, Emilia Jones from Coda and Locke and Key, and Meg Donnelly of the Zombies franchise and DC Animation where she plays supergirl. James Gunn and Peter Safran announced the Supergirl, Woman of Tomorrow movie in 2022 based on the comics by Tom King.  Danny Boyle and Alex Garland, the director and writer of the 2002 zombie horror film 28 Days Later, are reuniting for 28 Years Later, a sequel to the original. The pair are hoping to launch a trilogy of films set in the universe. Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss opened up for the first time about their canceled Star Wars movie in the cover story for last week's Hollywood Reporter, stating that the concept for their film dealt with the rise of the first Jedi and how the Jedi Order came to be. The Last of Us Season 2 has cast Beef star Young Mazino as Jesse. The series is expected to start production soon. Isabela Merced has also been cast as Dina. Barbie and Shang-Chi star Simu Liu will host the 2024 People's Choice Awards which will air live on NBC, E!, and Peacock on February 18. Director David Gordon Green, who was initially set to direct a sequel to last year's Exorcist: Believer titled Exorcist: Deceiver, has exited the project. Universal originally planned for the film to hit theaters on April 18, 2025, but the timetable is now unclear as the studio searches for a new director. Noah Hawley, the showrunner of the upcoming FX series "Alien," revealed in an interview that the series is set on Earth approximately 70 years in the future, preceding the events of the original film series. Despite discussions with Ridley Scott, Hawley explained that he won't incorporate the backstory from "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant" into his series, expressing a preference for the original films' retro-futuristic technology over the more advanced tech featured in the prequels.

Episode 11- Jon Irabagon: Always Moving Forward Jon Irabagon is always driving ahead whenever he wants to make a statement with a new recording. With his saxophones facing forward, Jon's bold and articulate improvisations draw on his singular drive to create a pathway for the future of jazz. He draws on the forces of the hand-chosen musicians, each becoming a lifelong ally in the music business. Jon is first-generation Filipino American, and the father of two girls. Jon is influenced more by the individualistic philosophies and accomplishments of the Chicago-based organization, the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, or AACM. These mixed complex-compositional ensembles, highly influenced by the works of John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, and Albert Ayler, are the basis for Jon's work but it's the future of this music that he seeks to play, not the rehashing of the music of the past.  Jon Irabagon 's life story begins in Chicago, the town of the tenor sound. It was in high school in the Chicago north suburbs when he was driven to seek out the music of the tenor titans: John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins and an alto titan, Sonny Stitt. After earning a Bachelor of Music from DePaul University, Jon went on to earn a Master of Arts from the Manhattan School of Music and then post-graduate studies at Julliard. In 2008 Jon went on to win the Thelonious Monk Saxophone Competition and years later the Philippine Presidential Award. Jon prefers to look ahead, seeking the future of the music, of the sound of jazz. For him, it's all about what's next. This is the main driving force for him. He's fortunate to have a gaggle of musicians with whom he can play the music. Furthermore, Jon has his own label, Irabbagast Records which gives him a label to publish music that may be considered more challenging to other commercial labels. Jon also accommodates his friends who are true to the music and the sound they prefer to play. In this episode we hear story after story about Jon and his music, his family, the creation of a record label so he can have a place to record his music, spreading the music as an instructor, and when Jon went to stay with his in-laws in South Dakota at the beginning of the pandemic lockdown intending an eight-week stay and winding up living with them for eight months, spending countless hours playing to the canyons, and so much more. The stories insistently pique your interest. So, strap yourself in for this ride.  This will be the opening episode, complete with two tracks of music. There is a bonus episode that completes the full episode. The interview weaves great tales and the music wraps it all up tightly. In the opening episode you will find this music. Thanks to Jon Irabagon for all the music. Reading this book leaves you newly inspired by how our museums can enrich all of us individually and expand the minds and worlds of our communities and future generations. There is currently a moment of reckoning for many museums, in which they're asked to respond to questions about diversity and inequality, their funding sources, their collections, exhibitions and programming, and how to meet the changing expectations of their audiences and communities. In his book, Dan makes a powerful case for why museums will continue to be essential to any society, why they matter as stewards of culture, places to generate new ideas, to build communities, advanced learning and understanding, and create spaces of beauty and permanence.Dan Weiss is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
