Jaga Jazzist og The National Bank.
Another week of strange weather, but Mark and Brendan are back with some red-hot music to share. This week's featured tracks include a song from Dean Blunt's new album, Black Metal 2, a moody new dance track from Park Hye Jin, a great bit of Aussie psych pop from Pond, and a frosty 1980s remix by the team of TVAM and Charlotte Spiral, remixed by DC Gore. And the archive track this week is opening song from the debut album from Manchester's The Stone Roses--a personal favorite of Mark's and Brendan's. Bonus tracks cover a number of genres, with new songs from Courtney Barnett, Connan Mockasin (and his father), the Nashville band Pile, a dance banger from DJ Seinfeld and Teira, some smoking live cut from Norway's modern jazz powerhouse Jaga Jazzist, and we wrap with the new single from Mykki Blanco, featuring Blood Orange's Dev Hynes. Have a great weekend, and a wonderful week ahead!

When creating a radio playlist one has to ensure how to sequence songs in a meaningful way. The dynamics of their interaction therefore becomes critical. There should be not too many fast pieces played back to back, nor not too many ballads one after the other. Fast and slow, soft and loud should take turn. Ideally the playlist should lead to a climax through one or more crescendos of songs. This week we each song in the playlist contains a remarkable crescendo... Two hours of jazz featuring only compositions that start softly and then build up and build up sometimes slowly some times fast, but always inexorably. The playlist features crescendo-meisters like Ibrahim Electric, Kresten Osgood, The Lounge Lizards, Michael Blake, Ben Allison, Michel Portal, Esbjörn Svensson Trio, Jaga Jazzist, Marc Johnson's Right Brain Patrol, David Binney, Richie Barshay, Jon Irabagon, Tim Berne, Nik Bärtsch. Jaga Jazzist is an eight-piece Norwegian ensemble with a sound that draws from jazz, vintage funk, Krautrock and shoegaze. It adds up to a mesmerizing, exploratory and overwhelmingly energetic sound simply meant to be experienced live. Led by composer and multi-instrumentalist Lars Horntveth, the band first came together in a small Norwegian town in 1994, when the members were still teens. To date they've released seven full-length albums, including a live album with the Britten Sinfonia. The Mars Volta have cited them as a favorite, and invited the band to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties Festival in 2005. We join Jaga Jazzist backstage to talk about what it takes to stay together for 20 years, embracing extremes of influence and the importance of going crazy every night. Then we take in a performance of Starfire, the exploratory title track of their latest album. Download Jaga Jazzist's Starfire as part of Season Two of LPR Live, with host John Schaefer. Listen to trailblazing new music performed live at Le Poisson Rouge, and enjoy interactions with artists and audience members. Subscribe to LPR Live on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts.
This is the final episode of Warm Focus as a weekly radio show on BFF.fm! :( But have no fear, Warm Focus will continue as a series of mixes and live DJ sets. I'm looking forward to being able to sink more time into more polished mixes with the same flow-inducing vibe. Follow @hoverbird on Soundcloud for my favorite radio episodes as well as new Warm Focus mixes and other, adjacent moods. Pretty much ever song I've ever played on this show can be found on my Spotify account. Follow @hoverbird on Spotify, I compulsively make mixes (instrumentals to work to, but also tons of other things!) Warm Focus is also available as a podcast, which is probably the easiest medium of all! Thanks to everyone who listened, to the amazing team that makes BFF.fm the best community radio station in the country. This week's guest is the supremely talented multi instrumentalist, Jørgen Munkeby. Jørgen and I discussed his entire life, including college, how to score credits faster, what lead to his musical development, the success of Shining, and what's next for this creative force. You'll hear the stories and exploits of Shining at Trolltunga, Los Angeles, the Mojave Desert, the streets of Oslo and beyond. Discover why Shining is so popular in Europe and how they remain virtually unknown elsewhere in the world. It was a fun interview and 90 minutes of complete gushing bliss for me, a huge fan of the band and the human. Make sure you check out the band at their website, Youtube, Amazon, or anywhere else you get digital media. It's awesome, challenging stuff and you never know where they'll take you next. 4:40 Lived in Norway's oldest city. Vikings and shit. Then, Oslo for college. 5:49 College life. Playing in bands for college credit. Pedagogical studies. 14:22 Jaga Jazzist, 14 years old, first real gig. 15:30 Shining started. Started street theater group. Energetic Gypsy music! 20:00 Shining evolution and process. The hybrid called Blackjazz. 27:25 Music can be a straightjacket. Pitchfork loves Shining. 41:15 Give us Fisheye! 44:35 Jørgen has made a singular thing. Making your mark. 47:14 The last record: International Blackjazz Society. The Last Stand live in studio. 48:30 Changes to Shining. Why the changes over the years? Musical direction? Personalities? 55:10 Keeping emotions in check. Never fired anyone from band. 56:50 Writing with others in the band. New positivity. 1:00:20 Wanting the 'feeling' of a band. Farting. 1:01:00 Performances under extreme duress. Oslo studio. Mojave Desert. 1:04:40 Trolltunga. The process and the experience. 1:10:05 International Blackjazz Society. The details. New directions. This week we have the exclusive first play of former Jaga Jazzist member Norwegian experimental guitarist Stian Westerhus’ new track. We’ve also got two from Japan with the insatiable techno-esque sounds of Japanese trio Nisennenmondai and the experimental work from Keiji Haino. Two too from Canada with Venetian Snares and Poirier. There’s Cameroonian disco from Pasteur Lappé, experimental Italian jazz from Piero Umiliani, and modern soul from Adrian Younge
XD

This collection isn't necessarily a "best of 2015" , it's just some of my favorite jazz tunes from the past year. It begins with one of my favorite albums of the year in any genre - The Thompson fields by The Maria Schneider Orchestra. The title track is remarkable. The Jaga Jazzist album was a big surprise for me. I've listen to them on and off for years but had lost interest for some reason. The track in this mix is strange, futuristic electronic/jazz cut that I have listened to a ton this year. The other two great discoveries were albums from Kamasi Washington and Kendrick Scott Oracle, definitely worth checking out. Is there any jazz out there that really engaged you in 2015? I'd love to hear about it in the comments. Enjoy T R A C K L I S T : 00:00 Maria Schneider Orchestra - The Thompson Fields 09:50 Jaga Jazzist - Oban 15:12 Kamasi Washington - The Magnificent 7 20:57 Andy Sheppard - Tipping Point 26:37 Kendrick Scott Oracle - we are the drum 32:00 food - this is not a miracle 36:00 Hidden Orchestra - the Revival 39:50 Chris Potter Underground Orchestra - Imaginary Cities(part 2) 48:12 Jakob Bro - Copenhagen 52:24 Giovanni Guidi Trio - The might it rained forever 59:10 Vijay Iyer Trio - Geese 63:45 Ben Monder - Zythum 70:10 Maria Schneider Orchestra - Walking by Flashlight 75:10 end
