AI-labor saving tool or existential threat? On his new recording Server Farm, saxophonist and composer Jon Irabagon contemplates the potential threat and promise of this omni-present technology. For this recording Irabagon augments his regular quartet consisting of keyboardist Matt Mitchell, bassist Chris Lightcap, and percussionist Dan Weiss with violinist and vocalist Mazz Smith, trumpeter Peter Evans, guitarists Miles Okazaki and Wendy Eisenberg, bassist Michael Formanek, and percussionist and electronic musician Levy Lorenzo. Imitating AI, Jon spent several years doing a deep dive into the musical output of his collaborators, mining their entire catalogues for ideas that create the foundation of the music on this exciting recording.

Yasushi Nakamura loves his music. And he truly loves laying down the groove lines behind a hot band like he does for almost a dozen bands. However, being one of today's first-call bassists means frequent and long show tours that can take him away from his family of two-children and spouse for weeks, even months at a time. It has resulted in an impressive list and number of recordings made on both electric and acoustic or double bass. Pianist and longtime friend, Emmet Cohen, says that Yasushi “…is known in the music community for playing in over a dozen bands and is hardly ever seen reading music.” The reason, says Yasushi, is he has a photographic memory for the music. He takes one look at it and the rest he recalls. This allows him to internalize the music, a practice he highly recommends to young bassists today. Yasushi is a pretty shy guy on and off the bandstand. Watch a video of him and you'll notice he kicks it like the good bassist he is but rarely engages in any dialogue. He says he likes to lay back, be the guy behind the sound. You wouldn't know it, though, when it's time for him to step out. Sometimes a big grin will shine, but Yasushi is mostly focused on delivering a ballad or driving his bass through the high pace sounds left behind by the pianist or the horns. His discography is already enormous. Yasushi has performed in and out of the studio with many noted jazz musicians including Cecile McLorin Salvant, Emmet Cohen, Christian Sands, Amina Figarova, Shamie Royston, Jon Irabagon, Rudy Royston, Vincent Herring, and Ulysses Owners Jr. I saw Yasushi at the 2023 Monterey Jazz Festival touring concert at Denison University near Columbus, Ohio. In that show he was part of an all-star billing with Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kurt Elling, Lakecia Benjamin, and good friends and long-time collaborators, Christian Sands and Clarence Penn. Yasushi Nakamura is sharing two compositions with the podcast so thanks to him for that. They are:“Yasugaloo”-A Lifetime Treasure, Yasushi Nakamura-bass, Lawrence Fields-piano, Clarence Penn-drums; 9/29/2016 (Atelier Sawano)-7:03“Awesome Beef”-Hometown, Yasushi Nakamura-bass, Lawrence Fields-piano, Clarence Penn-drums, Bigyuki-Synths; 11/10/2017 (Atelier Sawano)-3:56 This episode is being released during Jazz Appreciation Month. What better person and humbler guy than Yasushi Nakamura to kick off this year's celebration of jazz. And thank you for listening to Strictly Jazz Sounds. The Maroon's William Kimani and Gregory Caesar interview saxophonist, composer, and educator Arman Sangalang, who performed live at the 2023 Hyde Park Jazz Festival with the Arman Sangalang Trio. Arman's bio: "Saxophonist and composer Arman Sangalang is an up-and-coming jazz musician on the Chicago scene, as well as an in-demand sideman who collaborates frequently with Jameson Scriver's Reckoner, Miro Sobrer's Two of Swords, Morgan Turner Quartet, and Kabir Dalawari Quartet. He has studied with distinguished jazz artists such as Geof Bradfield, Walter Smith III, Greg Ward, Jon Irabagon, and Matt Ulery, and had the honor of sharing the stage with notable jazz artists such as Bobby Broom, Clark Sommers, Ted Sirota, Lenard Simpson, and Camila Mennitte. Interview with guitarist Mike Baggetta on his new album with mssv mssv is releasing their second studio album Human Reaction in their typical style: with a 58-show tour in the U.S. and parts of Canada (dates below). The band, composed of guitarist Mike Baggetta, Stephen Hodges (Tom Waits, David Lynch) on drums and avant-punk icon mike watton bass, creates music that is a heretofore unimagined hybrid of a punk power-trio and a dreamy experimental rock band, though they prefer the term “post-genre.” Human Reaction is being released by BIG EGO Records as a digital download, 12” LP vinyl, and via streaming platformson September 1. Recorded mostly on May Day immediately following that last tour, Human Reaction traverses a deeply broad sonic landscape, as expected from this nearly unclassifiable group, though with even deeper twists and turns. With inventively churning drum textures from Hodges (an instantly identifiable sound honed in his days with Tom Waits and David Lynch) and the full-steam-ahead all-in attitude from watt, (as he's displayed throughout his storied career with MINUTEMEN, fIREHOSE, and Iggy & The Stooges), there is still the impression of “pressure, combustion, power, and hissing clouds of sonic poetry,” as Premier Guitar said. Also evident is the more fearless exploring that comes from a band that has spent a lot of time together crafting their vision, as well as making room for guests like J Mascis, Petra Haden and Nels Cline on some of their previous releases. Baggetta has had the pleasure of working all over the world with a wide range of visionary musicians across many generations, including David Torn, Jim Keltner, Nels Cline, Psychic Temple, Jeff Coffin, Henry Kaiser, Petra Haden, Rev. Fred Lane, Donny McCaslin, Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, Joseph C. Philips' Numinous, Imani Uzuri, Viktor Krauss, David Wax Museum, Julian Lage, Jon Irabagon, Jerome Harris, Tom Harrell, Eivind Opsvik, Jeremy Udden, and Ruth Brown among many others. mikebaggetta.com https://mainsteamstopvalve.com Tickets to OCT 7th mssv at Beachland Tavern Cleveland OH https://www.beachlandballroom.com/e/13205278/mssv-c-level/
Welcome to the Bonus recording of Episode 11. More stories to tell by Jon Irabagon. The recording by the group, Mostly Other People Do the Killing, Blue, the note-for-note recreation of Miles Davis' classic album is “A work of conceptual jazz art,” writes Bandcamp. The listening public's response varied considerably but suffice it to say that Jon as well as his bandmates had to deal with substantial internet rage, including death threats. But not to let that totally color the experience, Jon says there were many positive emails about the recording and the process. The way Jon tells the story details a tale that will live on for ages. This bonus track also includes Jon Irabagon recounting the many years it took for him to transcribe most of the recorded solos of sax giants John Coltrane and Julian “Cannonball” Adderley. We talk about his recording Dr. Quixotic's Traveling Exotics, which we both consider as perhaps his best work largely because of with whom he records. The personnel on this album are phenomenal: Luis Perdomo, piano, Yasushi Nakamura, bass, Rudy Royston, drums, and Tom Harrell on trumpet. And, of course, Jon Irabagon is on alto sax. This is one helluva recording, we both agreed. I did not think our conversation would have been complete without touching base about Jon's good friend Sylvain Rifflet from Paris with whom Jon recorded two outstanding albums, Perpetual Motion and Rebellion(s). And if you wondered what is in Jon's future, he gives a full accounting of where he's moving forward. So, buckle up for this ride. Jon Irabagon, a tale of tales. Music: The Cost of Modern Living (Behind the Sky, Irabbagast Records, 2015) 6:02 Jon Irabagon-tenor saxophone, Luis Perdomo-piano, Yasushi Nakamura-bass, Rudy Royston-drums The Bo'ness Monster (Dr. Quixotic's Traveling Exotics, Irabbagast Records, 2018) 6:40 Jon Irabagon- tenor saxophone, Luis Perdomo-piano, Yasushi Nakamura-bass, Rudy Royston-drums, Tim Hagans-trumpet
Episode 11- Jon Irabagon: Always Moving Forward Jon Irabagon is always driving ahead whenever he wants to make a statement with a new recording. With his saxophones facing forward, Jon's bold and articulate improvisations draw on his singular drive to create a pathway for the future of jazz. He draws on the forces of the hand-chosen musicians, each becoming a lifelong ally in the music business. Jon is first-generation Filipino American, and the father of two girls. Jon is influenced more by the individualistic philosophies and accomplishments of the Chicago-based organization, the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, or AACM. These mixed complex-compositional ensembles, highly influenced by the works of John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, and Albert Ayler, are the basis for Jon's work but it's the future of this music that he seeks to play, not the rehashing of the music of the past. Jon Irabagon 's life story begins in Chicago, the town of the tenor sound. It was in high school in the Chicago north suburbs when he was driven to seek out the music of the tenor titans: John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins and an alto titan, Sonny Stitt. After earning a Bachelor of Music from DePaul University, Jon went on to earn a Master of Arts from the Manhattan School of Music and then post-graduate studies at Julliard. In 2008 Jon went on to win the Thelonious Monk Saxophone Competition and years later the Philippine Presidential Award. Jon prefers to look ahead, seeking the future of the music, of the sound of jazz. For him, it's all about what's next. This is the main driving force for him. He's fortunate to have a gaggle of musicians with whom he can play the music. Furthermore, Jon has his own label, Irabbagast Records which gives him a label to publish music that may be considered more challenging to other commercial labels. Jon also accommodates his friends who are true to the music and the sound they prefer to play. In this episode we hear story after story about Jon and his music, his family, the creation of a record label so he can have a place to record his music, spreading the music as an instructor, and when Jon went to stay with his in-laws in South Dakota at the beginning of the pandemic lockdown intending an eight-week stay and winding up living with them for eight months, spending countless hours playing to the canyons, and so much more. The stories insistently pique your interest. So, strap yourself in for this ride. This will be the opening episode, complete with two tracks of music. There is a bonus episode that completes the full episode. The interview weaves great tales and the music wraps it all up tightly. In the opening episode you will find this music. Thanks to Jon Irabagon for all the music. Please remember to subscribe if you haven't already. The music tracks in Episode 11 include the following and with the noted personnel: Anchors (Outright! Innova Recordings, 2008) 8:27 Jon Irabagon-alto saxophone, Russ Johnson-trumpet, Kris Davis-piano, Eivind Opsvik-bass, Jeff Davis-drums Mammoth (Rising Sun, Irabbagast Records, 2022) 11:59 Jon Irabagon-tenor saxophone, Adam O'Farrill-trumpet, Matt Mitchell-piano, Chris Lightcap-electric bass, Dan Weiss-drums When you're done with this episode, listen to the bonus episode complete with more music. Enjoy the conversation with Jon Irabagon, the sax player who's always looking forward. Here on Strictly Jazz Sounds. Thanks for listening. Steve Braunginn
The jazz scene in Columbus, Ohio is an eclectic one. Like many big cities Columbus has a 24-hour jazz radio station that plays mostly smooth and R&B-tinged jazz peppered with some classic jazz from the 50s, 60s and 70s; it has establishments that host jazz groups and at least two bona fide jazz clubs. Then, there are two nonprofit organizations: Jazz Arts Group or JAG and A Tribe for Jazz, the newest in town. A Tribe for Jazz is the topic of this episode of Strictly Jazz Sounds. Stephanie Matthews is the executive director for A Tribe for Jazz. Under her leadership and passion, A Tribe for Jazz keep all eyes on jazz's delicate legacy. Stephanie says it's all about the image, identifying and sharing the stories that matter through video recordings or live shows reaching for a diverse audience that includes young people as well as Columbus's rich racial and ethnic diversity. To preserve the legacy of jazz and to advance the future of jazz, Stephanie Matthews says that adding to the image of individual musicians advances not only the individual artist but the artform as well. Stephanie Matthews believes that their image can benefit from a boost and draw more attention to their work and possibly improve fan base and sales and subsequently maybe jazz as a genre will also benefit. A Tribe for Jazz does something else that's spectacular. Jazz education in the Columbus elementary and middle schools has also been a focus. By using the music from saxophonist Jon Irabagon, “Legacy: Jon Irabagon, A Solo Tenor Odyssey”, in a project in Columbus elementary and middle schools produced by Stephanie Matthews, A Tribe for Jazz was nominated for a major Columbus community award for their program that engaged young people with jazz to tell their own stories through visual media. The results were awe-inspiring tales that revealed so much about these students and their struggles during the pandemic.

Mike's singular and very personal musical style seeks to blur the lines between song and solo, while connecting a wide range of musical genres that influence him. The press says this approach is “…beguilingly atmospheric…” (Time Out New York) and that “Baggetta's music is quietly transgressive… Even when he plays a lot of notes, his playing can sound almost static, as though ideas were being snagged out of thin air.” (Hartford Courant) Baggetta's most recent release is the album Everywhen We Go, his second album with drummer Jim Keltner and bassist Mike Watt on the BIG EGO label. He also leads the band mssv, is a post-genre power trio featuring the iconoclastic rhythm team of drummer Stephen Hodges and bassist Mike Watt. They have just released their self-titled debut studio album, Main Steam Stop Valve, on BIG EGO Records, following up 2020's Live Flowers album on Striped Light Records, recorded live in Philadelphia, PA and Northampton, MA (with special guest J Mascis), as well as 3 limited edition 7” releases recorded solely over quarantine, featuring guest artists Petra Haden and Nels Cline. After completing their first full US tour in spring 2022 mssv recorded their second full length album for release next year. This band grew out of Baggetta's first album for BIG EGO, Wall of Flowers, which featured a reimagining of his music alongside bassist Mike Watt and drummer Jim Keltner. Baggetta has had the pleasure to work all over the world with a wide range of visionary musicians across many generations including David Torn, Jim Keltner, Mike Watt, Nels Cline, Psychic Temple, Jeff Coffin, Henry Kaiser, Petra Haden, Rev. My guest today is Ben Rubin a producer, mixer, bassist, and composer in Brooklyn NY. Whether he's melding hip-hop and jazz with legends like Masta Ace and Donny McCaslin, playing upright bass at the Newport Jazz Festival with Dred Scott Trio, remixing Karsh Kale or WuTang's Killah Priest, rockin' on electric bass with Marshall Crenshaw, or producing Peter Bernstein solo jazz guitar, Grammy-nominated producer/(re)mixer/bassist/composer Ben Rubin (aka Benny Cha Cha) is renowned for making records that are pure or genre-bending or both. Picked seven times as a “Rising Star Producer” in DownBeat Magazine's International Critics' Poll, Rubin has well over 100 album credits to his name. Lately, he has been working with a diversity of artists including Queen Esther, Erik Deutsch & Theo Bleckmann, Steve Conte (New York Dolls), Stripmall Ballads, Rachel Eckroth (St Vincent), Lower Power, Caleb Wheeler Curtis, Drifter feat. Lucy Woodward, Buzzed Armstrong, and Jon Irabagon, as well as labels like Ropeadope, Sunnyside and Imani. Most recently, Rubin's attention has focused on Analog Players Society at the Bridge Studio in Brooklyn with APS founder Amon Drum creating cut-up hip-hop instrumental records and jazz albums released on Ropeadope and described by Downbeat Magazine as “truly compelling.” featuring legendary Juice Crew MC Masta Ace described as “in the direct lineage of classics like A Tribe Called Quest's Low-End Theory, and Guru's Jazzmatazz.” Bens production and mixing credits include Walking Distance feat. Jason Moran, Grammy nominated composer/pianist Emilio Solla, and many recordings for Smalls Live Records releasing more than 30 records with jazz greats including Larry Goldings, Louis Hayes, Tom Harrell, Johnny O'Neal, Chris Potter, Tim Ries, Roy Hargrove, Mulgrew Miller, Seamus Blake, and Cyrille Aimeé to name just a few. As a bassist, Ben has toured and recorded both upright and electric bass with a diversity of artists, including Dred Scott Trio, Patti Smith, James Maddock, Courtney Love, Mary J. Blige, Moby, Bill Frisell, and his own acclaimed, genre-bending band Mudville which I believe my brother Nate played in at one point. Ben has also composed scores for features and short films, including director Nelson Kim's feature film debut, Someone Else, which premiered at the Miami International Film Festival in 2015. "Centralia" Mostly Other People Do The Killing: Disasters Vol.1 (Hot Cup Records, 2021) Moppa Elliott, Ron Stabinsky, Kevin Shea. This Is Our Language", "Amado is an emerging master of a great tradition, more apparent with each new recording or performance." Amado desenvolve ainda intensa actividade como fotógrafo, tendo realizado inúmeras exposições individuais (Maus Hábitos, Porto; Museu da Electricidade, Fundação EDP, Lisboa; Museu da Imagem, Braga; Galeria Módulo, Lisboa; Quase Galeria, Porto; Kameraphoto, Lisboa) e colectivas. Episode SummaryExperimental musician Mary Halvorson shares her story of how a practical person made the impractical leap to pursue a music career when she met a truly inspiring teacher in college. Syd and Mary talk leadership, women in music, quarantine, and more, in this episode of The Sydcast.Syd FinkelsteinSyd Finkelstein is the Steven Roth Professor of Management at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. Mary HalvorsonGuitarist and composer Mary Halvorson has been described as “a singular talent” (Lloyd Sachs, JazzTimes), ”NYC's least-predictable improviser” (Howard Mandel, City Arts), “one of the most exciting and original guitarists in jazz—or otherwise” (Steve Dollar, Wall Street Journal), and “one of today's most formidable bandleaders” (Francis Davis, Village Voice). In recent Downbeat Critics Polls, Halvorson has been celebrated as a guitarist, rising star jazz artist, and rising star composer of the year, and in 2019 she was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship.Halvorson has released a series of critically acclaimed albums on the Firehouse 12 label, from Dragon's Head (2008), her trio debut featuring bassist John Hébert and drummer Ches Smith, expanding to a quintet with trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson and alto saxophonist Jon Irabagon on Saturn Sings (2010) and Bending Bridges (2012), a septet with tenor saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock and trombonist Jacob Garchik on Illusionary Sea (2014), and finally an octet with pedal steel guitarist Susan Alcorn on Away With You (2016). She also released the solo recording Meltframe (2015) and most recently debuted Code Girl (2018), a new ensemble featuring vocalist Amirtha Kidambi (singing Halvorson's own lyrics), trumpeter Adam O'Farrill, saxophonist/ vocalist Maria Grand, bassist Michael Formanek, and drummer Tomas Fujiwara. One of New York City's most in-demand guitarists, over the past decade Halvorson has worked with such diverse musicians as Tim Berne, Anthony Braxton, Taylor Ho Bynum, John Dieterich, Trevor Dunn, Bill Frisell, Ingrid Laubrock, Jason Moran, Joe Morris, Tom Rainey, Jessica Pavone, Tomeka Reid, Marc Ribot, and John Zorn. She is also part of several collaborative projects, most notably the longstanding trio Thumbscrew with Michael Formanek on bass and Tomas Fujiwara on drums.Insights from this episode:The benefits of studying musical traditions to build your own strong musical foundation.Reasons why you should play different types and styles of music to enhance and further your career.Differences between listening to music through a streaming service versus on a CD or vinyl album and the impact of listening to only one song versus an entire album. How to find a balance between instinct and editing when creating music.Benefits of performing music live that can not be achieved through streaming concerts. How to be a good bandleader and how to deal with the pressure that comes with being a leader in any situation.Quotes from the show:“I realized music was much more than I had initially thought, it was much bigger. There were so many more possibilities.” – Mary Halvorson“I think there's a misconception that people who play experimental music only like experimental music or can't play other types of music and vice versa. I've found that that's often not the case.” – Mary Halvorson“I think of an academic career as an entrepreneurial career where you can always try something new if you want to try something new.” – Syd Finkelstein“We know, in so many walks of life, narrative flow and storytelling is everything.” – Syd Finkelstein“I've always found it un-intuitive to have music and then put lyrics in later.” – Mary Halvorson“I'm just writing music that I find exciting or that I think is beautiful or that I like and I think that tends to be a little bit left of center.” – Mary Halvorson“I'm very lucky to do music that I believe in.” – Mary Halvorson“What I've realized during this [quarantine] period is there's no substitute for live music. Doing live-stream performances is not a substitute for live music.” – Mary HalvorsonOn what advice Mary would give to her younger self: “Take your time with things and make sure to do things thoroughly … get really deep into something.” – Mary Halvorson“I think focusing on the process and not the end result is also a good thing to think about.” – Mary HalvorsonStay Connected: Syd FinkelsteinWebsite: http://thesydcast.comLinkedIn: Sydney FinkelsteinTwitter: @sydfinkelsteinFacebook: The SydcastInstagram: The SydcastMary HalvorsonWebsite: www.maryhalvorson.comSpotify: Mary HalvorsonYouTube Music: Mary HalvorsonFacebook: Mary HalvorsonSubscribe to our podcast + download each episode on Stitcher, iTunes, and Spotify. This episode was produced and managed by Podcast Laundry (www.podcastlaundry.com)
For episode 183 one of my favorite cats, Jon Irabagon, returns to the run the voodoo down. Increasingly prolific and tireless in his pursuit of creative expression, Irabagon is one of the most colorful and hardest working dudes around. He's a recent father and just released yet another recording of adventurous sounds. For this talk, we cover a lot of ground from making records to the Me Too movement, jazz elder culture to sustaining long standing musical relationships. A great talk with a great cat.
Moppa Elliott is a bassist, composer and band leader who, for the past fifteen years, has led the ever-evolving ensemble Mostly Other People Do the Killing. Based in Queens NY, he's worked closely with Peter Evans, Jon Irabagon and Charlie Evans. For this talk we go to a lot of places, from alcoholism to gun control, the history of jazz to surrealism. Today's conversation is a really good one and I am delighted to share it with you all.
