Fern Lindzon is a Canadian multi-style pianist, vocalist, composer and improvisor. She recently released a great album with her newjazz trio project Tryptique with Colleen Allen and George Koller ,and we're featuring music from that album as well as some of her other work, including her Juno-nominated album Two Kites. We talked about her mother, the artist Rose Lindzon, many mentors and influences including Don Thompson, Alan Bern and Marilyn Lerner, and several of Fern's projects including creating silent film music, Klezmer with the Sisters of Sheynville, and her new project of learning the expressive electronic instrument the Haken Continuum. In fact, what really struck me about talking to Fern was her thirst to continuously expand her knowledge, skills, and creativity. Esperanza Spalding Interview Esperanza Spalding, a Portland-born jazz musician, rose to prominence with her versatile talent as a bassist, singer, and composer. Trained in classical music from childhood, she explored various genres, leading to groundbreaking albums like "Esperanza" and "Chamber Music Society." Her Grammy win for Best New Artist in 2011 propelled her to international recognition despite competition from mainstream pop acts. Spalding's commitment to artistic integrity is evident in her experimental projects, such as writing and recording an album in 77 hours and exploring spirituality through music on "Songwrights Apothecary Lab." Collaborations with renowned artists like Wayne Shorter and Fred Hersch further cement her status as a jazz luminary. Now, as she embarks on a tour, she continues to captivate audiences with her innovative compositions and virtuosic performances.
Featuring the brilliant Telecaster stylings of Jim Campilongo; epic large ensemble arrangements from clarinetist Mike McGinnis' upcoming release; the classic beauty of the Bill Mays Trio; new music from a solo release of one of the great living pianists, Fred Hersch; a cut from Erik's piano trio record ‘Decades'; downtown music legends Sex Mob; and finally, the queen… Nina Simone.
In the 34th episode of the ECM podcast we're joined by pianist Fred Hersch, whose solo-debut for ECM Records, "Silent, Listening", was recorded in Lugano, in 2023 and produced by Manfred Eicher. In the conversation, Fred talks about the close collaboration with Manfred Eicher, the serendipity of life and how special this album is to him.
