In this episode, I talk with the talented trumpeter, composer, and arranger Milena Casado. Born and raised in Spain, she's a graduate of the Berklee College of Music, where she honed her skills working with amazing teachers. She shares about growing up in a small village town, looking different from other members of that community; about meeting her father for the first time; about getting in touch with her Dominican roots; and about her acceptance to Berklee. We also discuss the major influence of her mentor, drummer extraordinaire Terri Lyne Carrington, and dive into her album Reflection of Another Self, a stunning debut that's a deeply personal journey of self-discovery and resilience. https://www.milenacasado.com
Send us your thoughts! Out February 7, 2025, Griot Songs marks the return of the Omar Thomas Large Ensemble after more than a decade, featuring soloists Jason Palmer, Mark Zaleski, Alex Brown, Mark Cocheo and others “Griot Songs firmly plants Omar Thomas in the pantheon of distinguished and exceptional writers. He blurs the lines stylistically in the best of ways with a texturally compelling 'heart and soul' sonic story all his own.”– Grammy-winning drummer/composer Terri Lyne Carrington“Omar Thomas… proves himself a modern-day griot - summoning influences, traditions, and narratives from both past and present, framing them in a manner that is at varying times tender, dramatic, mystical, and joyful - but always absolutely captivating!” – Grammy-nominated composer/bandleader Chuck OwenIn West African tradition, the griot is a storyteller, poet and musician whose songs become a repository for a community's traditions and history. Sixteen years in the making, Griot Songs – the breathtaking third release by the Omar Thomas Large Ensemble – is a distinctly personal and emotionally vibrant take on the role of the modern griot. Through his visionary compositions and arrangements, Omar Thomas spins captivating narratives from his own experiences, inspirations and heritage. It's been over a decade since the release of the Omar Thomas Large Ensemble's last album, We Will Know: An LGBT Civil Rights Piece in Four Movements, which Grammy Award-winning drummer and composer Terri Lyne Carrington hailed as a “thought provoking, multi-layered masterpiece.” The big band made its auspicious debut in 2013 with I Am, which entered the iTunes Jazz Charts at #1. But Griot Songs, out February 7, 2025, is the project that Thomas has envisioned since initially forming the ensemble for his graduate composition recital at New England Conservatory in 2008. The earliest versions of three of the pieces on the album date back to that time, with the remainder spanning several years of composing, revising and dreaming. In the meantime, Thomas established himself an acclaimed and in-demand composer for wind ensemble. In 2019, he was awarded the National Bandmasters Association / Revelli Award for his wind composition “Come Sunday,” becoming the first Black composer awarded the honor in the contest's 42-year history. In addition, he's a respected educator currently serving as Associate Professor of Composition and Jazz Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Griot Songs marks Thomas' impassioned return to his roots. “I was ready to reintroduce myself as a big band composer,” he declares.Support the show

After seeing Grammy-winning pianist and composer Kris Davis, live at the Village Vanguard, I knew I wanted to sit down with her and dive into jazz. Here we discuss her philosophy of improvisation and her energy and passion for performing live. The Canadian-born artist fell in love with jazz at an early age, studied jazz piano at the University of Toronto, and cites the legendary Don Pullen as a major influence. Along the way, as she shares, she's played with innovative performers such as J.D. Allen, Dave Holland, Terri Lyne Carrington, Tyshawn Sorey, and John Zorn. Before our conversation winds down, we talk albums and which speak to her the most.

Lawrence Fields, born and bred in St. Louis, has earned a spot at the forefront of young jazz pianists, thanks to his blending of vintage ideals with a contemporary mindset. For the last five years, in 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, and 2019, Downbeat Magazine has placed him close to the top of the keyboardist category in their “Rising Stars” critics poll. Fields showcase his dynamic blend of composition and playing in his trio and quartet, and his music is currently being featured internationally. His debut album featuring his trio and solo playing, “To the Surface”, was released to critical acclaim on February 2, 2024. Veteran saxophone icon Joe Lovano – with his unerring ear for youthful talent – has become one of the pianist's biggest fans. Fields is a member of several bands led or co-led by Lovano: his Classic Quartet (originally featuring Lewis Nash and George Mraz in the rhythm section); the Sax Supreme Quartet (with Chris Potter); and his Sound Prints quintet with trumpeter Dave Douglas. The Wall Street Journal praised Fields' “elegant, probing” solos with Sound Prints, while The New York Times noted that he is “integral to the band's plunging, changeable style.” A modern-minded bandleader from the younger generation also relies on Fields, as he mans the piano and keyboards for the Christian Scott Group. Referencing his role on acoustic and electric pianos in the trumpeter's band, NextBop said: “Fields remains a constant lyrical presence on the keys – innovative, expressive, supportive, able to soar like a bird in his solos. He never fails to impress.” Fields has collaborated with Christian Scott on several albums — including co-writing and co-producing 3 songs on the Grammy-nominated The Emancipation Procrastination (Ropeadope, 2017), as part of his work on Christian's Centennial Trilogy with releases Diaspora and Ruler Rebel. He features prominently in the piano and keyboard chairs on Christian's Grammy-nominated live recording Axiom (2020), as well as the Grammy-nominated Ancestral Recall (2019), and the Stretch Music (Ropeadope, 2015) and Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah (Concord, 2012) albums. With Lovano and Douglas, the pianist features on Sound Prints' two critically-acclaimed studio releases: Other Worlds (2021), and Scandal (2018, Greanleaf) — selected by The Guardian as their #1 jazz album of 2018, as well as one of Rolling Stone's top 20 jazz albums of the year. Fields also plays on the live album Sound Prints: Live at Monterey Jazz Festival (Blue Note, 2015), which featured two brand-new compositions written for the ensemble by the legendary Wayne Shorter. He appears on the album Marsalis Music Honors Alvin Batiste (2007) alongside Branford Marsalis, Herlin Riley and Russell Malone, as well as on drummer Terri Lyne Carrington's More to Say (a 2009 disc for which he served as a pianist, keyboardist, and composer-producer). Fields also appears on releases by drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts, bassist Yasushi Nakamura, vibraphonist Warren Wolf, and saxophonists Jaleel Shaw and Steve Slagle. The pianist has been a member of the Watts band, as well as that of trumpeter Nicholas Payton. In addition to performing onstage with the likes of Payton, Watts, Marsalis, and Carrington, Fields has appeared with star bassist Christian McBride, drummer Nate Smith, trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis, trumpeter Takuya Kuroda, and bassist Robert Hurst, among others. Lawrence's playing is also featured on Christopher North's score for the new Sam Pollard documentary "Max Roach: The Drum Also Waltzes", which premiered in Fall 2023 on PBS' American Masters television series.

Just 14% of care leavers go to university, compared to 47% of young people who didn't grow up in care, according to a report by the think tank Civitas. The figures have barely changed over the past 10 years and at the current rate of progress, it will take 107 years to close the gap. Two care-experienced young women who did manage to smash the so-called care ceiling share their experiences with Krupa; Rebecca Munro, who graduated with a masters in business and is now an Education Liaison Officer at the University of St Andrews and Lucy Barnes, a barrister.Up to half of women will have a UTI at some point in their life. A special Woman's Hour episode all about women who dig for the truth.Marianne Asher-Chapman from Holts Summit, Missouri has been searching for her daughter, Angie Yarnell, for more than 20 years now. As a young man, Ramsess watched a documentary on the life of Paul Robeson and in that instant, an artist emerged. With his newfound interest and God-given talent, Ramsess studied art with assistance from the L.A. Times Art Department. A quiet self-effacing man with unassuming ways, a ready wit, and a loud booming laugh that takes one by surprise, Ramsess prefers to let his work speak for itself. On rare occasions when he speaks of his work, a serious turn of mind is revealed. For almost 30 years, Los Angeles-based Ramsess has been an artist working in various media – pen and ink, acrylics, oils, watercolors, stained and etched glass, sculpture, mosaics, and textiles. His mastery is displayed in portraiture, abstract, and caricature. He began quilting in 2010, producing a wide range of quilts and wall hangings. He produces Jazz and African-American historical calendars, note cards, and wearable art. In addition to illustrating his own series of coloring books, he recently illustrated a book authored by drummer Terri Lyne Carrington.Ramsess has participated in regional exhibitions in California including but not limited to, The Skirball Cultural Center, Art and Practice, The Brockman Gallery, The Watts Towers, Sargent Gallery, First African Methodist Episcopal Church, and the prestigious Monterey Jazz Festival. Nationally at the Colorado Art Jazz Festival, Telluride Jazz Fest, New Orleans Jazz Festival, Jacksonville and Clearwater Jazz Festivals, Association of Jazz Educators, WGBO radio, and the famed St. Peter's Church in NYC. His work has appeared on numerous television shows and films, most recently Issa Rae's Insecure. Globally in South Africa, Tokyo, Leningrad, Frankfurt, Paris, Montreal, and Barcelona and Montreal. The collections of Anna Marie Horsford, Samuel L. Jackson, Dianne Reeves, Baltimore Museum of Art, Glynn Turman, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Clifford Brown Jr., Marshall Allen (Sun Ra), Santana, Cindy Blackman, Terri Lyne Carrington, and Meshell Ndegeocello,Although the list of collectors and exhibits is impressive, Ramsess is equally grateful and humbled by the everyday customer who purchases his cards, calendars, coloring books, and wearable art. He sees their appreciation for his work on par with and as esteemed as the collectors of note. Question: What would jazz music sound like if it had been born in a country without patriarchy; taught without bias and performed on a stage with radical inclusivity? That's what jazz titan Terri Lyne Carrington says is the foundation behind Berklee College of Music's Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice. Terri Lyne is the founder and artistic director of the Institute and a professor at Berklee, her alma mater. In this episode of Strictly Jazz Sounds, I spend time with Terri Lyne Carrington, getting deep into this question along with how to lift women and nonbinary individuals in this historically male dominated industry, creating a new bandscape that reveals the multitude of different voices in jazz. Terri Lyne is a drum major for women and nonbinary individuals in the jazz ecosystem. She's also a highly successful drummer/percussionist, a bandleader, composer and producer, an artistic director of a couple of organizations, a writer with two books, and an educator. On Terri Lyne's website, she displays many photos of the extraordinary talent that she met through her musician father's friends. You see her standing between drummers Roy Haynes and Tony Williams; Art Blakey is sitting on the floor next to Terri Lyne while she plays the drums; another has Buddy Rich next to her while she's on the drums. Not your typical teenager's hangout of friends nor upbringing experiences. She readily acknowledges her home environment was one of privilege and enriching for a young prodigy. Terri Lyne dedicates her life to reaching back to today's young women and nonbinary individuals bent on changing the faces of jazz, on and behind the bandstand. We most certainly spend time on her 2023 Grammy winning album New Standards Vol. 1 on the CANDID label and the related book “New Standards Vol. 1: 101 Lead Sheets by Women Composers,” published by Berklee Press. Two tracks of music from the album are included in this episode. The personnel for the album: Terri Lyne Carrington-drums/percussion; Kris Davis-piano; Linda May Han Oh-bass; Nicholas Payton-trumpet; and Matthew Stevens, guitar. Uplifted Hearts by Shamie Royston; featuring Ravi Coltrane-tenor sax; Val Jeanty-electronics; Elena Pinderhuges-flute; Negah Santos-percussion; and Shadrack Oppong-spoken word. Throw It Away by Abbey Lincoln; featuring: Somi-vocal; Melanie Charles-vocal; and Negah Santos-percussion. Terri Lyne Carrington's portfolio is extensive, bold, and rich. If you are unfamiliar with it, I encourage you to check it out and listen to her music in her discography. The next episode of Strictly Jazz Sounds will be in early 2024. I'm taking some medical time off until then. This is the first year of this podcast. Thanks so much to all my guests and to you for making this a great year for me. If you have not subscribed, do so. You'll be one of the first to know when a new episode is released. Support live jazz wherever you are. Be safe. Steve Braunginn Thanks to CANDID Records for the music. Davis works as a collaborator and side person with artists such as John Zorn, Terri Lyne Carrington, Craig Taborn, Tyshawn Sorey, Eric Revis, Michael Formanek, Tony Malaby, Ingrid Laubrock, Julian Lage, Mary Halvorson and Tom Rainey. Sam Smith is a composer, arranger, and sought-after bassist based in Boston, MA. He has gained such an insight on the bass that the AuburnPub said that "watching Smith play, the line between bassist and bass blurs." The young bassist looks to always improve himself as an individual musician, as well as with the music that is brought to him by other artists. Smith constantly plays local in the Greater Boston area, and has brought his expertise around the world from the USA to China, The Netherlands, France, and the UK, playing as a sideman and bandleader for many musical projects. The bassist has played at esteemed venues such as Dizzy's Club, Wally's Cafe Jazz Club, and Smalls Jazz Club and has played and/or recorded with the likes of Cassandra Wilson, Ron Blake, Stefon Harris, Joe Magnarelli, Jesus Molina, Aaron Parks, and Terri Lyne Carrington. Terri Lyne Carrington is one of the most respected jazz musicians in the world. Her drumming career started at the age of 10, which is when she officially got her musicians' union card, and in the decades since, she's earned countless accolades, including four Grammys, a Doris Duke Artist Award and an NEW Jazz Masters Fellowship. She has performed on over 100 recordings and has toured and recorded with jazz legends, including Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Stan Getz and Esperanza Spalding. In recent years she has turned her attention to correcting gender inequities in her field. In 2018 she founded the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice at her alma mater, Berklee School of Music in Boston. She remains the Institute's artistic director, ensuring that new generations of female, trans and non-binary musicians are welcomed to contribute their talents to the genre. She's also passionate about recognizing the contributions women have already made to jazz. To wit, she edited a recently published collection of music titled “New Standards: 101 Lead Sheets by Women Composers.” Alongside that project, she recorded an album titled “New Standards, Vol. 1” that features several compositions in the book. “New Standards” won Terri Lyne her most recent Grammy, and not surprisingly she plans eventually to record all 101 compositions. Terri Lyne also recently curated a multi-artist multimedia installation titled “New Standards” that initially opened at the Carr Center in Detroit, where she is artistic director. This interview took place the morning after the closing party celebrating the exhibition of “New Standards” at Emerson Gallery of Contemporary Arts in Boston.https://www.terrilynecarrington.com/
