On today's show, Steve Geller and Charlie Long live from Rouses get us ready to rock for the Saints taking on the Green Bay Packers in some frigid weather at Lambeau Field with temperatures looking to be in the high 20's to low 30's but alas, reports are we are not in store for a snow game... the silver lining is that that gives the Saints a much better shot at pulling off an upset as the Packers look to punch their ticket to the postseason with a win. The guys also discuss the Saints injuries as the team is relying on a lot of rooks in key positions and the Packers are getting back some big names before diving into the Saints sound bank to hear from quarterback Spencer Rattler about what he can do in his first cold weather NFL start, and we hear from head coach Darren Rizzi on what the team to can do to help bolster Rattler's 4th start for the Black & Gold. We also connect with Saints sideline reporter and WWL digital content producer, Jeff Nowak, who helps us make sense of the weather up north and tells us what we should expect to see from the Saints offense tonight.

Playwright Tira Palmquist sat in the Playwright's Spotlight while rehearsing her latest play The Body's Midnight. We had a wonderful conversation discussing the benefits of table work, entering the flow state and making discoveries later in the process, the role of the playwright in rehearsals, cutting characters, time between drafts, and the tool of "saving as." We also touch on the different development processes, rookie mistakes, teaching subtext and fixing your flaws, finding your voice, poetry in playwriting as well as her take on "pay to play" and finding opportunities. It was another interview full of insight that I hope can help take your playwriting to the next level. Enjoy!TIRA PALMQUIST is a dramaturg, director and playwright known for plays that merge the personal, the political and the poetic. Other plays include: Two Degrees, Ten Mile Lake, Age of Bees, and This Floating World. Meet comedian, actor, writer, filmmaker and more, Lars Midthun! From their hometown of Minnesota, Lars and his comedic-brother Jack Kelly (who joined forces to create ‘Something Picnic’) ultimately found a 2nd home for their brilliant-meets-absurd brand of comedy, in Los Angeles. In a world of infinite YouTube channels, the brand of comedy in Something Picnic is something unique and wild, and I could only leave it to Lars, here, to start explaining - and Jack Kelly, to complete when he hopefully comes on the podcast too!, but the shit is GOLD. One of my favourite things about chatting with Lars, was that getting along with and joking with’m felt IMMEDIATELY road-tested. I can’t tell you how wonderful that is for me to interact with, let alone record a podcast… of(?). Grammar. I feel that could be said with almost anyone I might be fortunate to have on, who makes shows for ‘Channel 101’ - where you’ll find Something Picnic’s hit primetime show “Nipple Sucking Aliens”. Do watch that show… In NSA, you’ll see their style shine, and you’ll see allot of that dynamic duo’s handsome faces. (Audio clips in this podcast episode). In this conversation with Lars Midthun, I went after his whole story; From growing up in Minnesota, finding his calling, getting into comedy, studying film in college, MAKING his first film, the award winning “The Way North” about his Grandfather’s post-WWII journey in Norway, and the beautiful family trek/collaboration involved - and then, how all of these experiences lead to making a show about aliens who suck people’s life-force from them, through their nipples. Fans of Texas Country Music, Red Dirt Music, Americana, and any other name folks want to come up with to describe this genre, may not be aware of it, but one of the best songwriters and most unique artists in their midst hales from WAY NORTH of the Red River. (I think I’ve heard Corb describe his music as “Agriculture Tragic” or “Ag Trag” for short) Born and raised in southern Alberta, Canada, the son of veterinarian, in a family with livestock and ranching history, Corb Lund “strayed a little from the herd” (see what I did there?) and chose to make his living behind a microphone and holding a guitar. One familiar with Corb’s music today might suspect he’s been doing the country & western thing since his outset; not so.  In this interview Corb explains how for the first many years of being in the “biz” he was actually a bass player in a Canadian Heavy Metal band called “The Smalls”.  Corb played in The Smalls until 2001 when they broke up.  However, a few years prior to that, he’d began dabbling with his own country trio on the side.  After The Smalls hung it up, Corb dove head first into his own career and hasn’t looked back. Today, Corb Lund and the Hurtin’ Albertans, as they’re billed, can now be found playing all over North America from coast to coast.  In this interview with Corb, Carly and I really hit on his unique writing style and the diverse subject matter in his song.  As you’ll hear, Corb explains how he feels his style may have been influenced at an early age by one of his grandmothers who placed such an importance on the study and learning of Phonics.  No matter how he developed his songwriting style, it’s ultra-unique, even in this genre.  On the same record, for example, 2012’s “Cabin Fever”, one can hear a very western themed tune professing the tragedy that is cattle ownership (“Cows Around”) and a few tracks later you’ll be hit in the face with a punk sounding tune about sexy chicks in goth attire (“The Gothest Girl I Can”). We also discuss Corb’s relationship and collaborations with another Texas favorite, Hayes Carll.  Corb discusses how he initially formed his relationship with Hayes some 15 years ago after Corb’s girlfriend at the time won all of Hayes’ money in a poker game.  Years later, Hayes helped Corb finish a song he’d been sitting on for a few years called “Bible on the Dash” that also spawned the hilarious video version of the song seen HERE.  This interview is full of great stories including Corb’s take on bad tattoos and how he nearly was burned alive on a motorcycle trip from Vegas to Austin, but somehow, never knew how close he’d been to catastrophe until the whole event was over and done with. You can check out more about Corb and the Hurtin’ Albertans, where they’ll be playing and how you can buy their music at www.corblund.com . Episode Ten: Way-North Jobs

California District One Media

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 6, 2017 3:29

Here in California, District One is unique for its size and demographics. It consists of eleven counties making up a vast tract of land, a fifth of the state, yet it makes up only 3 percent of its population. Unlike its dense and diversified urban neighbors, 86 percent of the population here is white, with 20 percent living below the poverty line. In the far-North unemployment rates can run as high as 16 percent. A remarkable 18 percent of its sparse, rural population lives on Disability. One half of the population depends on Obamacare or Medi-Cal for their health coverage. One third of households living below the poverty line are run by single moms with children. And while the region struggles economically and socially, in November District One voted overwhelmingly for the billionaire Donald Trump. Being left behind by the new economy, rural Californians are seeking new, disruptive ways of governing in hopes of bringing prosperity to the region. But with broken campaign promises piling up, and the GOP’s commitment to defund healthcare, education, economic stimulus, and forest services that so many in our district depend on, it begs to ask - Is this the right plan for us? Congressman Doug LaMalfa blames the high unemployment rates in his district on government environmental protections and overreach on public lands. He has voted repeatedly to allow corporations unchecked industrial abuse of forests and water in trade for job stimulus. However, recent census data highlights the diminished role timber and mining play in our local economy, making up only 4 percent of employment district-wide. But it’s not regulations holding us back, it’s growing automation, advancements in technology, and foreign competition that’s slowing local timber and mining job growth. Instead, California’s protected beauty and resources have proven to be a job creator. While timber and mining sectors continue to downsize, hospitality, construction, and real estate jobs in the District dominate the economy, making up 45 percent of employers. We need leadership that develops a modern rural economy, one built on transportation, telecommuting, medical services, green energy and small businesses. Candidates running for Congress in 2018 are looking to the future to leverage the area’s natural resources for job development, without having to sell off public lands to the highest bidder. Expect from these congressional candidates a fresh approach on job creation instead of the same old cry to deregulate to benefit the few. We need fresh proposals to ignite a new rural economy. Be sure to register and vote in 2018. And find us on Facebook, Itunes and Soundcloud. This is California District One Media.

Episode 32 of One Week Only! This week, our key film is “Long Way North,” a thrilling animated adventure story about a young aristocratic woman in 19th Century Russia who is determined to find her missing grandfather’s ship at the North Pole. Directed by Rémi Chayé, and from the producers of “Song of the Sea” & “Ernest & Celestine,” this is a wonderful new animated gem with lush, beautiful animation and a strong female protagonist. Now playing in select theatres thanks to Shout Factory! We also review “American Honey,” a road-trip odyssey starring Shia LaBeouf & Sasha Lane, by Andrea Arnold; Swedish comedy “A Man Called Ove” starring Rolf Lassgard as grumpy old Ove, by Hannes Holm; Israeli drama “Sand Storm” about a traditional Bedouin community, by Elite Zexer; and the documentary “Danny Says” about the rock & roll life of Publicist/Manager Danny Fields, by Brendan Toller. Hosted by Carlos Aguilar & Conor Holt. Music by Kevin MacLeod at www.incompetech.com
