Resiliency : The Griggs Farms Story

Farm4Profit Podcast

This Farm4Profit episode features Matt and Kelly Griggs, owners of Griggs Farms LLC in Humboldt, Tennessee — a fifth-generation family operation growing corn, soybeans, wheat, and cotton on 2,000 acres. What began in 1882 with cotton has evolved into a nationally recognized regenerative farm rooted in conservation and faith.Listeners will hear how:Matt began experimenting with cover crops back in 2011 — long before it was common — and turned those early trials into measurable success: improving soil structure, reducing runoff, and boosting water infiltration by over 1,200%.Kelly, originally from Chicago with a background in hospitality, left her corporate career to become an essential partner on the farm. She now runs equipment, manages operations, and advocates for farm wives across the country. The couple faced immense challenges — including Matt's traumatic combine accident in 2020 and Kelly's battles with cancer and autoimmune illness — and used their platform to openly share their faith, perseverance, and community support through it all.The conversation dives deep into regenerative agriculture, family legacy, and living your faith out loud, including:How they use multi-species cover crops like cereal rye, clover, radish, and buckwheat to build resilience. The importance of balancing modern technology (Case IH & John Deere) with stewardship principles. What it means to lead publicly as a family through pain, healing, and gratitude. The Griggs' work has earned national recognition, including the 2020 Mid-South High Cotton Award and features on the History Channel's “The American Farm.”You'll also hear about their community outreach — from lighting up a tractor and grain cart with Christmas lights to connecting with other farm families through events like Farmers Off the Farm Cruise (2025).The show closes with a lighthearted “Would You Rather” segment, reminding listeners that even the most accomplished farmers still love a good laugh between long harvest days. At 10:54 a.m., he called his father Tony to say that his father-in-law, Reverend Pat Chisenhall, was yelling at him while his estranged wife Katie hid inside the house. Six minutes later, at 11:00 a.m., Tony arrived at the Chisenhall home to find his son lying face-down, bleeding and unresponsive. Pat had shot him six times with a .22 rifle. Once in the abdomen, once on the top of his left shoulder, and four times in the back. Christian was rushed to the hospital, where he was soon pronounced dead. As his family struggled to process the sudden loss, detectives began piecing together what had happened that fateful morning. My guest for this episode is John Griggs, co-founder & co-CEO of Presidium. We talk about how operators can identify problems early and get properties back on track, without your residents losing faith in you. Even the small issues, like a broken window or a candy wrapper on the ground, can signal neglect. Griggs points to early warning signs that need attention, which can be physical signs such as poor upkeep or deeper issues such as decreasing renewal rates and consistent negative feedback. In 1912, the Alaskan wilderness was rocked by the largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century—30 times more powerful than Mount St. Helens. It was called Novarupta. A few years later, explorer Dr. Robert Griggs ventured into the blast zone and documented a land transformed by fire. His reports made the front page of National Geographic and ignited imaginations for generations. Now, over a century later, Creation Scientist Pat Roy picks up where Griggs left off—retracing his steps into the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes with one goal: to uncover the forgotten evidence that points to the truth of biblical history. Join Eric Hovind and Pat Roy for a high-stakes, multimedia-rich retelling of an adventure that blends exploration, geology, and faith. What Pat discovers isn't just ash and lava—it's undeniable proof of the global Flood and the biblical Ice Age. You'll never look at volcanoes—or the Bible—the same way again.   Watch this Podcast on Video at: https://creationtoday.org/on-demand-classes/exploring-novarupta-the-eruption-that-confirms-genesis-creation-today-show-434/  Join Eric LIVE each Wednesday at 12 Noon CT for conversations with Experts. Trump-era executive orders, police hiring standards, and college admissions all converge in a decades-long debate over disparate impact, one of the most misunderstood yet consequential doctrines in civil rights law. In this episode of Stanford Legal, Professor Ralph Richard Banks, faculty director of the Stanford Center for Racial Justice, joins host Professor Pamela Karlan for a deep dive into how the disparate impact doctrine really works, why it matters, and what's at stake when it's attacked in the name of “meritocracy.” From the landmark Griggs case to modern college admissions, Banks dissects the arguments on all sides—showing how this sometimes-vilified legal doctrine not only helps root out discrimination, but can also strengthen, rather than undermine, meritocracy. Links:Rick Banks >>> Stanford Law pageConnect:Episode Transcripts >>> Stanford Legal Podcast WebsiteStanford Legal Podcast >>> LinkedIn PageRich Ford >>>  Twitter/XPam Karlan >>> Stanford Law School PageStanford Law School >>> Twitter/XStanford Lawyer Magazine >>> Twitter/X(00:00:00) Introduction to Executive Orders and Disparate Impact (00:03:30) The Function and Impact of Universities in Society (00:09:46) Understanding Different Measures of Merit (00:13:20) Legacy Preferences and Nepotistic Systems (00:18:16) Disparate Impact in Standardized Testing (00:23:38) The Future of College Admissions and Rick Banks' Upcoming Book

Send us a textWhat does it take to transform an ordinary backyard into a personal sanctuary that feels uniquely yours? Steve Griggs, landscape architect to athletes and celebrities with 40 years of experience, reveals the secret isn't just about luxury—it's about emotional connection."When you're designing a space, you want to ask them how do you want to feel when you're in that space?" Griggs explains, dismantling the misconception that beautiful outdoor spaces require massive budgets or expansive properties. Whether it's a tiny New York City terrace or a sprawling estate, he focuses on creating environments that reflect personalities and provide emotional resonance. His refreshing take democratizes design: "When you're floating on a raft with your eyes closed, it doesn't matter if it's a blow-up pool from Walmart—you'll have that same feeling as in a luxurious pool."Beyond design philosophy, Griggs shares practical wisdom for homeowners and aspiring landscapers alike. As the author of the bestselling book "Straight Dirt" and a featured designer on Bravo TV, he emphasizes the importance of listening to clients, delivering on promises, and building success through referrals rather than aggressive marketing. His role as a "conductor" orchestrating complex projects illuminates why execution matters as much as vision. For those looking to enter the field, his advice is refreshingly straightforward: "Learn the plants, build trust, and do what you say you're going to do when you say you're going to do it."Whether you're considering a landscape renovation or building a business, Griggs leaves us with powerful parting wisdom that transcends outdoor design: "Bet on yourself. Go all in with yourself." Connect with Steve on Instagram @stevegriggsdesign or through his website to explore how your outdoor space can become a meaningful extension of who you are.Want to be a guest on Living the Dream with Curveball? What starts as a conversation about acting quickly turns into a heartwarming reunion between two North Carolina natives who had no idea they practically grew up next door. Molly Griggs opens up about her Southern roots, early theater experiences at the Cape Fear Regional Theatre, and how growing up in Fayetteville shaped her worldview both on and off stage. From MerleFest memories to reflections on leaving—and later embracing—her hometown identity, this episode is full of unexpected nostalgia. Molly also talks about her emotionally charged role in John Proctor Is the Villain on Broadway and why it felt like the universe handed her the script at just the right moment. She reflects on the vulnerability required to bring parts of her younger self to the stage, the tension between people-pleasing and truth-telling, and what it means to play “the one you love to hate” in Netflix's The Residence. It's a layered, funny, and refreshingly honest look into how personal growth and performance are deeply intertwined. Molly Griggs is a stage and screen actor currently starring as Bailey Gallagher in John Proctor Is the Villain on Broadway. Her previous credits include Minnie Fay in Hello, Dolly!, as well as TV roles in Succession, Servant, Doctor Death, and Netflix's The Residence, where she plays Lily Schumacher. On April 23, President Trump signed E.O. 14281, Restoring Equality of Opportunity and Meritocracy, declaring that “disparate-impact liability is wholly inconsistent with the Constitution and threatens the commitment to merit and equality of opportunity that forms the foundation of the American Dream.” In this episode, experts explore the origins, evolution, and controversy surrounding disparate impact law—from Section VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, to landmark Supreme Court decisions like Griggs v. Duke Power Co. (1971) and Wards Cove Packing Co., Inc. v. Atonio (1989), to the legislative response in the Civil Rights Act of 1991. What is disparate impact liability? How has it shaped outcomes in employment, housing, and equal access to opportunity? Is it a justifiable basis for legal liability without evidence of disparate treatment? Join us for a conversation on one of the most debated legal doctrines in American civil rights history and its role in shaping the future of equality and meritocracy.Featuring:Dan Morenoff, Executive Director, American Civil Rights Project and Adjunct Fellow, Manhattan InstituteGail Heriot, Professor of Law, University of San Diego School of Law[Moderator] Linda Chavez, Chairman, Center for Equal OpportunityAdditional Reading:Morenoff, Dan.
