2024 irodalmi Nobel-díjasa a dél-koreai Han Kang lett. We discuss:The songs we feature during the recap:Yong ae and villagers by Nam Hye Seung and Park Sang HeePhoto of my Mind by Song Ga inHow Captain Ri is lying through his teeth about Se-ri and this is so unlike him! He's actually doing so many things that are out of character! How Captain Ri and Se-ri are looking at each other in a new light because of certain incidents, including the beggar boy to whom Se-ri gave food, and Se-ri's gifts to Captain Ri and his men.Stairway to Heaven, the K Dramas that Kim Ju Meok was watching. How memories that are lost, that come back, or that are revealed over time are more common than we thought and are a new K Drama element! How Captain Ri became a K Drama cliche when he kisses Yoon Se-ri in the boat hold, to maybe throw off the Coast Guard about to barge in on them. How Captain Ri is often so aloof and confident when he's in trouble. Could this be because of his father? Does this family relationship make him feel untouchable?Se-ri needs  Plan C to get out of North Korea and now we have Seo Dan, who's come back from Russia and claims to be Captain Ri's fiancee.Gu Seung Jun is now in North Korea but it's possible that despite his money, he may not be safe, because Lt. Commander Cho Cheol Gang threatens to turn him over to his enemies if he's not respectful. We get introduced to Jeong Man bok, the wiretapper who helped Cho Cheol Gang murder Ri Mu Hyeok. Now Cho Cheol Gang realizes that Captain Ri Jeong Hyeok is Ri Mu Hyeok's brother and he wants to take down the entire family. The Korean idea of “noonchi,” which roughly translates to social skills, and literally means eye measure. Following December 7, 1941, the United States government interned 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry evicted from scattered settlements throughout the West Coast states, yet why was a much larger number concentrated in the Hawaiian Islands war zone not similarly incarcerated? Tom Coffman is a political journalist and leading historian of modern Hawai‘i, author of six books, and director of six documentary films. His latest book is Inclusion: How Hawai‘i Protected Japanese Americans from Mass Internment, Transformed Itself, and Changed America. In making sense of the disparity between Island and mainland, Inclusion unravels the deep history of the U.S. “sabotage psychosis,” the causes of the internment , and the unique set of forces in Hawai‘i that preserved its interracial harmony through the depths of war. Each year the cathedral chooses a theme for inspiration and reflection, and in 2022 our theme is connection. Marking Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, join Dean Malcolm Clemens Young and his wife Heidi Ho - a native Hawaiian - for a conversation with Coffman about how small groups with a common goal and working cooperatively can result in wondrous social change. You can help us bring the arts to life at Grace with a gift today to The Forum. Text "grace" to 76278 or go to gracecathedral.org/givetograce. About INCLUSION “Brilliant and meticulous, Tom Coffman reveals the people and forces that spared territorial Hawai‘i's Japanese populace from mass removal after Pearl Harbor and enabled its sons to serve America gallantly in World War II. The heroes of this true story…were inspired by an idealism and aloha that the world can learn from today. Based on groundbreaking research, Coffman's compelling account gives them recognition that they richly deserve.—Mark Matsunaga, Hawai‘i journalist, and World War II historian About the Guest Tom Coffman is a political reporter and author of six books, including Nation Within, Catch a Wave, Island Edge, and Tadaima! His book in progress is titled Social Justice Work. A decade ago, Gangjeong Village, in southern Jeju Island, was swarmed by local, domestic and international protesters demonstrating against the then-under construction South Korea naval base. Fast forward to present day, and the base has opened. But protests persists in the sleepy fishing village. The bridge that leads into town is a strewn with protest banners and a Catholic shanty erected a decade ago remains and is used for protest masses. Recently local politician Kang Min-sook found herself in controversy when she suggested that this history be "erased" in order to attract tourism to Gangjeong. She quickly apologized. However, her sentiment is that the remaining protests prevent tourism in the town from taking off -- which is one of the base's stated purposes. So, we ask: What should be done with Gangjeong? The pair also discuss recently released statistics about rental car accidents in Jeju. And they are taught an insult from teacher Ju Young Han during Jeju Dialect Corner. They also interview Jamie Lee, the host for Arirang's "Wonders of Jeju" program that airs seven days a week from 10 p.m.-12 a.m. She is also an English-language anchor for KCTV. Piano Trio No. 1 in E flat major Op.1 No.1: IV. Finale (Presto), interprété par le Chung Trio. Pluto, par Sufjan Stevens. Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-Flat Minor, Op. 23, TH. 55: I. Allegro non troppo e molto maestoso - Allegro con spirito par Chung Trio.

OinK - Only in Korea Facebook group creator Travis Hull joins former Arirang employee Daniel Lee & Korea FM's Chance Dorland to explain how Daniel's Facebook post criticizing the poor English of Arirang TV's "Aerial Korea: Ep 13: Busan 부산" video led to the removal of all "Aerial Korea" videos from the company's YouTube channel. The trio then discuss how rather than hiring based on English ability & actual experience in the field, the visa-centric hiring system used by many of South Korea's English media companies creates the conditions that allow these & other mistakes to be made over & over again. In Seoul's Itaewon District, Colin talks with Stephen Revere, CEO of 10 Media (producer of Chip's Maps), co-founder and managing editor of 10 Magazine, author of two Survival Korean books, and for three years the teacher on Arirang television's Let's Speak Korean. The Seoul in which he arrived, and which amazed him, in 1995; how quickly he decided to master the Korean language, and the dearth of tools he had back in those days, such as the Korean Through English books; where the Defense Language Institute's hierarchy of difficulty discouragingly ranks Korean; the frustrations of studying Korean alongside Chinese and Japanese classmates; why students on Let's Speak Korean had to pretend to speak Korean poorly; his days with the "한외모" speaking group; what he enjoyed most about Korean life that convinced him to learn more and more about it; what got him from subscribing to 3-2-1 Contact as a kid to starting 10 Magazine as an adult; what a foreigner should know to make best use of a city like Seoul, or a country like Korea; what remains "hidden" about Korea in this era of the "Korean wave"; why so many Koreans dismiss their hometowns, if they don't come from Seoul; what he does when he heads out in to the provinces; the "massive" generational difference between older and younger Koreans; what his life in Korea has taught him about America; what positive aspect of Korea it reflects that you can easily get into shouting matches there; how the size of your vehicle determines your right-of-way on the roads of Seoul; the unique role Itaewon, home of 10 Magazine headquarters as well as "Hooker Hill", "Homo Hill", and a mosque, plays in Seoul, and why it inspires a song like "Itaewon Freedom"; whether more Korean teaching lies in his future; when he knew he would't be going back to America; when he realized he'd attained fluency in Korea, and what it means to be fluent anyway; why you've got to join the group for eating in Korea (and possibly turn ex-vegetarian because of that); why the markets provide the purest experience of the culture; and whether he still  considers mastering another language.

In Seoul's Arirang building, Colin talks with Adrien Lee, host of Arirang TV's Showbiz Korea and Arirang radio's Catch the Wave. They discuss how he first reacted to the sight of all the branches of Paris Baguette, Tout les Jours, and Ciel de France in Seoul; how he got from industrial engineering studies in France to television and radio in Korea (and why he isn't looking back); what Korean culture he could get exposure to growing up in France; how few complications his background introduced into his childhood; how his French mom met, and learned to speak Korean before meeting, his Korean dad; the Korean dream of Paris, France, and Europe; the constant change in Korea, the "exciting hell," versus the unchanging stability of France, the "boring heaven"; what Koreans ask him when they find out he comes from France; how he grew up speaking a mother tongue, a father tongue, and a school tongue; how he teaches Korean language with Hyunwoo Sun, and why he finds people start studying it; how Korean people make the study of Korean interesting (in slight contrast to the situation with French); how he adapts his behavior to different cultures; the elements of Korean popular culture he personally enjoys, even when he doesn't have to talk about them for work; the sort of Korean food you get in Paris; the things you wouldn't expect that Korea, but not France, puts into bread; what has surprised him about the strengths of Korean culture, including the Korean women's golf performance; the convenience of Seoul's safety, 24/7 culture, and ease of leaving your laptop out at the coffee shop when you get up to use the bathroom; whether Korea and France can learn from one another's priorities; whether Seoul has become an international city in the Parisian manner; where he takes visiting friends and relatives in Seoul; what first steps to take toward Korean culture before coming here; and how to keep up with his broadcasts, wherever you may live.
