“Beyond the Duplex Planet” is a feature documentary about artist David Greenberger and his unconventional work with senior citizens. In 1979, fresh out of art school, Greenberger took a job as activities director at the Duplex Nursing Home in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. He began conducting quirky interviews with the home's senior citizens, rejecting a pat oral history approach in favor of questions that would spark engagement: “Which do you prefer – coffee or meat?” “Why do people spit?” “What do you think George Washington's voice sounded like?” and “What is embarrassment?” The result of this was The Duplex Planet, an early ‘zine, complete with excerpts from the interviews, as well as offbeat music reviews and poems, unorthodox illustrations and graphics, all by the residents themselves. Over time this material has become the basis for spoken word shows, podcasts, graphic novels and numerous albums, many of these projects featuring well-known artists. Champions and/or collaborators of Greenberger and his senior colleagues include people like magicians Penn & Teller, cartoonists Daniel Clowes and Lynda Barry, musicians Dave Alvin, Bill Frisell, Peter Buck (REM), David Hidalgo and Louie Perez (Los Lobos), artist Ed Ruscha, actors Lili Taylor and Martin Mull, and legions of other fans. Greenberger's work interviewing seniors continues to this day. Beyond the Duplex Planet explores notions of aging and its intersection with art and community. It's also a revealing look at the life of an artist devoted to documenting the elderly who is himself moving into his senior years. The film will have its world premiere at SxSW this month with a number of screenings. And it’s being distributed by Filmwax friend Jim Browne’s Argot Pictures. Beth Harrington is an Emmy-award winning independent producer, director and writer, whose fervor for American history, music and culture has led to a series of critically acclaimed films. Her independent production Welcome to the Club – The Women of Rockabilly, a music documentary about the pioneering women of rock ‘n' roll, was honored with a 2003 Grammy nomination and has been seen on public television and at film festivals in the U.S. and abroad. Beth's most recent work, The Winding Stream – The Carters, The Cashes and The Course of Country Music appeared at over 30 festivals worldwide including a SXSW premiere and has won many top festival awards. Earlier work with WGBH-Boston for the NOVA science series was honored with two national Emmy nominations while her local work with Oregon Public Broadcasting has resulted in six other regional Emmy nominations for historical and public affairs program producing and writing. A rock ‘n' roll singer and guitarist, she is most noted for her years as a member of Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers on Sire Records. https://youtu.be/nzgbOeFOFYk

In this episode, roots music returns via the altar: Gillian Welch & David Rawlings live at Melbourne's Forum, with guest Andy White joining the chat.  They describe the duo as deities in Australia, playing with disarming minimalism (mics on guitars, SM58s, no fancy DI wizardry), and drawing an audience so quiet it feels like church. Brian's only complaint is the kind you're only allowed after 20-plus gigs: he wanted setlist variations — the tour's Neil Young (“Cortez the Killer”), Springsteen (“Racing in the Street”, “Atlantic City”), maybe a Garcia nod — and didn't get them.  Michael diagnoses him as “gluttonous”, which is fair, though “devout” might be kinder. The conversation widens into stagecraft: tuning mishaps, the art of filling dead air, and the delicate question of whether you should tell stories between songs or let the song do the work.  That segues beautifully into a bigger theme: the thrill (and terror) of the no-setlist life. Bill Frisell becomes the exemplar: dazzling, improvisational, apparently operating without a set list, with Brian recounting a classic partner-at-gig moment — Karen asking if Frisell's strange effects are just him tuning up.  Frisell, told the story, laughs and admits people say that a lot. (This is the highest compliment: “your art is so unfamiliar I assumed it was maintenance.”) From Frisell they leap to Elvis — specifically Baz Luhrmann's concert-footage film EPiC (Elvis Presley in Concert), made from newly uncovered Vegas-era material.  Michael's key point is unexpectedly roots-adjacent: underneath the jumpsuits and spectacle, Elvis is vulnerable.  He's also a kind of bodily conductor, cueing the band with movement rather than baton, with the musicians watching him like hawks for the next dynamic turn. It's showbiz as improvised gospel. And in case you worried the episode might end without another collector's item, Brian flags a song that did land perfectly at the Forum: Gillian & Dave covering Guy Clark's “Desperados Waiting for a Train”, from Old No. 1 (1975), notable also as Steve Earle's first recorded appearance — and now reissued in a special edition.  They wrap by teasing more about the new McCartney documentary, sponsor fantasies (“someone with really deep pockets”), and the ongoing podcast mission statement: tell your friends — and also tell people you don't like. Which, frankly, is the most honest marketing plan in music media. You can catch Andy White live on stage in May at the Merri Creek Tavern. No one even knew the town where it happened.  When the famous radio host Orson Welles heard about the crime, he pledged to solve the mystery, week-by-week, on the air. Today, episode 1 of our new series Orson Welles and the Blind Soldier, about an incident in a small, southern town that led to the desegregation of the U.S. military. --- Thanks to Richard Gergel for his book Unexampled Courage and Indiana University's Lilly Library for archival audio.  We had a very interesting and touching conversation with Courtney Hartman about her latest release, “With You,” which conveys the theme of giving and receiving care. Courtney talksabout balancing being a mom and a career musician and the fulfilling feeling of“I made something.” Courtney's 3-year-old even makes a guest appearance.   Courtney Hartman, a Wisconsin-based, Colorado-born guitarist, singer, writer, and producer, hasspent 15 years deftly knitting together music communities across the bluegrass, folk, and indie scenes. She turned early acclaim (including a 2014 GRAMMY nomination for her work with folk quintet Della Mae) into true partnerships, writing and recording with an ever-growing family of fellow artists. PopMatters calls Courtney “a real-life folk troubadour and scholar, informed by her travels and the relationships that she's built through them,” and Acoustic Guitar Magazine says she is “a songwriter that delights and disturbs.” Herfirst two albums, Ready Reckoner and Glade, featured collaborations with Gregory Alan Isakov, Anaïs Mitchell, Bill Frisell, and Sam Amidon. Over the past decade, Courtney has spent time in 28 different countries, seeking to bridge cultural divides through music diplomacy andcreative cooperation. Her upcoming release, With You, is a richly collaborative album centered around the themes of care and motherhood. It will be released independently on November 14 and includes performances by Watchhouse, Tift Merritt, Phil Cook, and more.   Be sure to check Courtney out here:  Website: Courtneyhartman.com  Patreon: /courtneyhartmanmusic IG: @courtneyhartman FB: @courtneyhartmanmusic Youtube: @courtneyhartman

In this episode, I'm joined by John Mailander, a fearless and lyrical fiddler/violinist whose work bridges bluegrass, jazz, ambient improvisation, and songcraft. We trace his path from San Diego to Berklee (where he studied American Roots with mentor Darol Anger) to Nashville, where he found a close-knit community that's as experimental as it is supportive. John discusses the city's “weirdo music” scene, ambient nights, free improvisation, and oddball collaborations, and how that energy coexists alongside the touring calendar. We dig into his life-changing chair with Bruce Hornsby: the no-setlist ethos, learning the “top 80” deep-cut originals, living on the edge together, and the night Bruce rearranged the stage so John could stand next to John Scofield, then kept tossing them intertwined solos all evening. John shares recent runs with Sam Grisman (with hero Peter Rowan onboard), producing and recording more from Nashville, and the origin of his own band Forecast, a genre-porous collective inspired by Bill Frisell, Brian Blade Fellowship, Pat Metheny/Brad Mehldau, and Joni Mitchell. We talk through the new record Let the World In: how residency nights at Dee's in Madison shaped the tunes, why the drums sound so alive, and why he welcomes rotating lineups to hear the same music through new lenses. Teaching and mentorship thread through the conversation: passing on what was given to him (formally and backstage between songs), honoring influences like Matt Mundy (ARU/Bruce Hampton), and why the point isn't “pushing boundaries” as a goal but playing honestly enough that the music pushes itself. It's a generous, grounded conversation about trust, curiosity, and letting the music lead.To learn more about John, visit his website. John Scofield is undeniably one of the preeminent forces in contemporary jazz guitar. Along with a few of his peers—see Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell, Mike Stern—he modernized the sound of our instrument and the genre. But there's much more to Scofield than just jazz.To break down the deepest of Scofield's records and talk about the intricacies of his playing, we called up another great, Adam Levy. There's a great chance you've heard Levy alongside artists such as Tracy Chapman or Norah Jones, and his solo discography is deep! Adam has a host of Scofield know-how, so we get right to it. One of my absoliute favorite Nashville guitarists, Kenny Vuaghan, joins me on the show today for the first of a 2-part episode where we go deep into his stories about growing up in Colorado, his formative experiences seeing the Grateful Dead and Jimi Hendrix, taking guitar lessons as a youngster from Bill Frisell, and playing a seemingly endless string of country and rock gigs around the local area. We get into his move to Nashville in the 80's which led to many incredible sessions and touring gigs with Patty Loveless and of course his role in Marty Stuart's Fabulous Superlatives, a gig he's held down for over 24 years. We also discuss the finer points of 1980's Japan-made Strats, his pickups of choice and other nerdy guitar details.Kenny remains very active these days, continuing on a regular touring schedule with Marty Stuart, but also fronting one of my favorite bands to see around Nashville on a regular basis called The Imperial Blues Hour. Kenny doesn't have a website, but is active on socials if you want to follow him there. Stay tuned for Part 2 a week from today! This season is brought to you by our main sponsors Larivée Guitars, Audeze, Izotope, FabFilter, and Chase Bliss. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In The Past: Garage Rock Podcast

You didn't have to wait long this week for the new episode - but listen to how weary The Kinks are in 1965's dreamy "Tired of Waiting For You." A languid version of the slashing riffs Dave Davies had heretofore been known for! Later that year, New Zealand's Rayders raided the platter-racks with their version of the tune. Detroit's Apostles came out with a fairly funky version with cool drummin' and some totally psych church organ. Things just got weirder when Nancy & Lee released their rendition: it's pretty Prozac-y! Finally, Bill Frisell, the man Erik & Weldon watched a few weeks back, is heard playing a very space-age instro version. It's your life, you can pick what you want!

Lizzie Lee is a genre-defying vocalist blending classical precision with the soul and spontaneity of New York's jazz tradition. Her voice—praised for its rich color and “acrobatics and élan”—offers a bold reinterpretation of the American Songbook and beyond. Raised in Alaska and trained in Paris and New York, Lizzie brings a rare combination of global sensibility and emotional connection to her work. Her debut album, 72nd Street, recorded at the legendary Van Gelder Studio, is a striking statement of identity: lush, lyrical, and rooted in both tradition and risk. The album features a stellar lineup including Joe Farnsworth (drums), Stacy Dillard (tenor sax), John Webber (bass), Joe Block (keys), and Rob Nuovo (guitar). With performances across NYC, the northeast and internationally, and acclaim from artists like Bill Frisell and David Broza, Lizzie is merging elegance with edge, storytelling with swing, while fast becoming a name to know among vocalists in the jazz world. In the classical genre, Lizzie is a dynamic soprano praised for her “brilliant coloratura, acrobatics, and élan” (Opera Magazine) and has performed across the United States, Europe, and Asia. Lizzie debuted in Europe at Staatstheater Darmstadt and has received international acclaim for her roles as the Parrot in the world premiere of Mahosot: Architect of Dreams by Somtow Sucharitkul in Bangkok and as the Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro in NYC. She has appeared as a soloist with the Jenaer Philharmonie, Bergische Symphoniker, and in concerts in Vienna with Maestro Francisco Araiza. Her artistry has been shaped through work with legendary mentors such as Martina Arroyo and the late Dalton Baldwin, whose influence continues to inspire her interpretive depth and stylistic sensitivity. Lizzie has performed at iconic venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House and has worked closely with artists from many of the world's most prestigious theaters including the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House, San Francisco Opera, Washington National Opera, and Opéra Bastille.
