Sunday, February 9, 2025 – Pastor Mike is starting our study on 1 John today, titled “Religion vs Relationship.” The Apostle John uses the first few verses of this chapter to lay the foundation for the reality of who Jesus is, affirming that He is both a real man and fully God. It’s essential for him to address this because Satan has been very active in sowing confusion within the early church regarding the humanity and deity of Jesus, aiming to keep “Religion” as the dominant theme in the worship experiences of false gods. John, along with the other disciples, had a personal relationship with Jesus while He walked this earth and died a sacrificial death to pay for our sins. This marks the beginning of the “Relationship” experience tied to the Good News of the Gospel. Consequently, John and the other writers of the New Testament worked tirelessly to promote “Relationship” over “Religion” as the way to God through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. The focus on “Religion” remains an effective strategy used by the enemy to undermine “Relationship” even today. In short, “Religion” doesn’t save anyone; only a “Relationship” with Jesus does. Worship and study with us and center your life on your relationship with Jesus.

Our faith must be built on the witness of those who actually beheld and handled Jesus while on earth. And on our shared experience of listening to Christ and seeing Him at work in our lives and in the lives of others.
Our new series, Remain, starts this week as Pastor Ethan shares a message on Completed Joy from 1 John 1:1-4.
We have all been caught in a storm at one time or another. Maybe it was just a hard rain or maybe something more serious, like a hurricane, that we needed to take cover from. Regardless, we all know that some storms can be scary and even dangerous at times. We can become frantic during them. But what if walking through a storm can refine you as a person? As believers, that is what a storm in life can do for us. This week at Mount Hope we begin a new sermon series in the book of 1 John, Walking with Jesus in the Stormy World. In our first week we already see what John is trying to teach us about the storms of life and the storms we face as a church. But we also see how in that very same storm, joy can be found and made complete when our faith is certain in Christ.

“You can’t have your cake and eat it too.” This popular proverb literally means “you cannot retain possession of a cake and eat it, too.” Once the cake is eaten, it’s gone forever. Another way to say this is “you can’t have it both ways.” In the early church, many early believers were treating their newfound faith in this fashion, where popular culture and false teaching were undermining Jesus’ way. That as long as my thinking was good, my behavior was no big deal; as long as my spiritual soul was good, the sins of my earthly body did not matter. The Apostle John in his letter, 1 John, warned the early church of this kind of bifurcated thinking. Today Christians can still be susceptible to this wrong kind of living. Sound doctrine goes hand and hand with sound lifestyle. Come explore together 1 John and see how Jesus wants us to be. This is the Way!

From the beginning God created us to be in community with him. On the other side of the fall, it can seem very difficult to imagine how we could live out that purpose well. The good news is that through the life we have in Christ, we are invited back to the same fellowship with God that was a part of our created purpose. Come join us as we look at the introduction to 1 John and see what is in store for us through our ten-week series in 1 John.

The word fellowship used in the New Testament is koinonia. While that is a Greek work, it is a Greek word one might actually hear today. Probably that and agape, for love, are the two Greek words a lot of Christians will have heard. Fellowship in the New Testament is not really about a get-together as much as it is conveying an intimate, mutual participation in a life shared with one another.
Jesus, the eternal Son of God, came in the flesh and dwelt with us. With this certain truth, we are assured we have fellowship with the Father and can have joy to the full.
1 John is a pastoral letter written to believers in the midst of confusion created by false teachers. John writes to reassure God’s people about the reality of Jesus Christ and the way of life found in him. John’s first concern is not to knock down the false teachers but to protect his beloved readers from the destructive lies about their Father. 1 John speaks to us of the profound life of love God has summoned us to, to the absolute centrality of Jesus Christ and how we can have fellowship with God because of Jesus’ death and resurrection. All of this brings us to Christmas. The truth of Christmas is that God has come to have fellowship with us by sending his son and inviting us into the way of life he shares as Trinity: the way of love. At the end of a tiring year, let us reflect on this immovable comfort and anchor for our souls!
