Uncomfortable is wearing shoes that are too large for your feet. Awkward is that they are clown shoes and you're at a wedding. While feeling the discomfort of taking up the cross of discipleship is not easy, it is not awkward, it is beautiful. No parent reproaches a toddler for using the sofa or coffee table to learn how to walk - they encourage them, cheer them, and praise them! Isn't our Father the same way? He wants the discomfort because we need the discomfort to mature on to the next phase. That's what we're talking about in this podcast! ▶️ Nate's Message on YouTube: https://tinyurl.com/ytp4e3df
In this episode, Scott and Josh talk about what it means to be Spirit-filled Christian in a Spirit-filled church. The Words of Grace Podcast seeks to clarify, amplify, and apply the Sunday morning sermon at Grace Community Church. From time to time we will address other topics. We hope these podcasts help impress the Word of God into your everyday life. Episodes are hosted by Josh Hussung and Scott Patty.
Jesus taught the disciples that the Holy Spirit would be given to bear witness about him (John 15:26). That day has come. Acts 3 begins with a healing miracle, but quickly turns into a sermon about Jesus of Nazareth. The Holy Spirit is active in the healing, the preaching, and the reception of the message by those who heard it. But not all submitted themselves to the Spirit and the word. And so, the opposition begins. Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your heart, but believe. Grace Community Church exists to build spiritually healthy people for ministry in the world. One of the ways that we pursue this mission is by gathering each Sunday for corporate worship, prayer, and biblical teaching. The corporate nature of this gathering is both edifying to the believer and a witness of God's grace to the world. Sermon speaker is Scott Patty unless otherwise noted.

Scott and Josh discuss how we can tell what's normal—exploring how to discern which aspects of Acts should shape and characterize our church today. We hope these podcasts help impress the Word of God into your everyday life. Episodes are hosted by Josh Hussung and Scott Patty.
The great philosopher Woody Allan wrote: "There are two types of people in this world, good and bad. The good sleep better, but the bad seem to enjoy the waking hours much more." Is Allan on to something? Well, maybe the humor in irony, but no one wants to live in a world like that! But when it comes to God's purpose of humanity and the transformation of our species through Jesus Christ and their collection of being the Church on earth, people are the only way it get's done - warts and all! Samm Allberry said it succinctly: "It is impossible to be in Christ and not belong to others. A Christian, by definition, has a connection with and a responsibility to other Christians. You cannot claim Christ and avoid his people."We're in for a penny, in for a pound, as they say. That's our discussion on this week's Church for Normies podcast! ▶️ Nate's Message on YouTube: https://tinyurl.com/ytp4e3df

The preaching of the gospel of Jesus and the reception of that message by the repentant crowd led to a gathering of new believers filled with the Holy Spirit. Immediately they devoted themselves to congregational life that built them up and continued the witness of Christ to others. This is what the Holy Spirit birthed on the day of Pentecost. May we be led by the Spirit and share their devotion today.

Ep 41: Uncomfortable Series 01: The CrossThe Gospel is a Paradox. Come as you are, but you must repent. You are loved with an everlasting love, but come today - don't put it off. There is freedom, but we make ourselves servants. Jesus bore our cross so we don't have to, but he commands us to take our up. The last one, the cross, is probably more confounding than all the others. We see the cross as jewelry, an elegant symbol, a political statement, or an interesting metaphor or intelletual exercise. But it's meant to be destructive, mortifying, and very personal. And life giving, a witness, and a means of joyful obedience. Listen in on this amazing conversation that opens up the topic of: the uncomfortable cross. ALSO: Check out Cancer with Grace's Partnership with Little Caesar's Pizza!
Scott and Josh talk about the real and timeless need for repentance. The human heart has not changed, nor has our need for the Gospel. We hope these podcasts help impress the Word of God into your everyday life. Episodes are hosted by Josh Hussung and Scott Patty
The message of Jesus as Lord and Christ, and the realization that it was this Jesus that they crucified, landed on the hearts of the people of Jerusalem with the force of cutting conviction. They knew they were guilty. What should they do? This Jesus whom they crucified will forgive them. The very death they caused is the means by which their sin is removed. Repentance, faith, and confession of Jesus as Lord is the way forward. This remains the way today.

Let's talk.
What does it mean to be a community of people, gathered as a church, and marked by God's grace? Today we celebrate our twentieth anniversary by looking at our name — Grace Community Church — and what it still means for us as we look ahead. Key Verses: 1 Corinthians 1:3, 1 Corinthians 16:23-24
Scott and Josh talk about the difference between feeling the weight of sin that leads us to repentance, and a continual sense of unworthiness. One leads to life, and the other prevents us from seeing God's grace.
The two responses of the crowd in Jerusalem to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit reflect their unbelief. Some are confused, some mock, but all are blind to the reality that the Spirit of God has come upon his people. Peter, the once fearful disciple who denied his Lord, now stands filled with courage by the power of the Spirit to declare that what is happening can be explained only as the work of Jesus of Nazareth. This Jesus, crucified and raised, has now poured out the Holy Spirit. This Jesus is both Lord and Christ. To this Jesus we turn in repentance and faith. This Jesus we proclaim.

"Christ has no hands but yours," said the sign. It was put on a statue of Jesus where bombing, the story goes, destroyed the church, and broke off the hands of Jesus. A famous artist offered to repair it, but the church siezed on an idea. It was fallen humanity that destroyed the building, but could never destroy the Body of Christ. Therefore, the statue would stand as a metaphor: His people were always meant to be the ones to manifest his kingdom come and will to be done. Let it remain as it should! That - and much, much more - is discussed on this lively podcast that closes out the Reset series!▶️ Nate's Message on YouTube: https://tinyurl.com/ytp4e3df

In Acts 2, the promised day is here, and Jesus pours out his Spirit on his disciples. That day marks a new day in God's redemptive history. In the days of the prophets and of John the Baptist, the Spirit was promised. Now the Spirit has come, filling believers with power to declare the mighty works of God in the last days. These are the days in which we live. This promise is for us. May the Lord open our eyes to this indescribable gift.

Send us a textGUEST: MATT MACARTHUR, eldest son of Pastor John MacArthurThere are several common terms for the ceremony that takes place after death—funeral, celebration of life, memorial service. You can tell a lot about the deceased by the manner and mood of their service. Some are focused on how accomplished and full of good works the person was. Others are about happy memories and photos. Still others are like a dirge, full of grief over the loss. The Bible says, “But we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren, about those who are asleep [dead], so that you will not grieve as do the rest who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 4:13-14).To be sure, there should be grief over the loss of a loved one, for we will never see or speak to that person again in this life. Jesus Himself wept when seeing the family and friends of Lazarus lament over his death, not because they wouldn't see him again (He was about to raise him from the grave) but because death is the ultimate enemy and reality of our sin-corrupted world. But the passage above says believers shouldn't “grieve as do the rest who have no hope” because of the promise that God will bring true believers into His presence in heaven to live for eternity, where there is no sin, pain, or death. This is why for the believer the service following death should largely focus on the greatness of God and how He brings the believer into an infinitely better eternity. Instead of a memorializing or celebrating this life, it really should be a worship service of God for this life, and even more, the next.I attended the memorial service for pastor John MacArthur this past weekend at Grace Community Church in Los Angeles, MacArthur went to heaven back on July 14 at age 86 after nearly three years of health problems.Outside my parents, MacArthur has had the most important influence on my life, through his preaching and character. So my older brother and I traveled to the church, as we have done many times over the years for the Shepherds' Conference, an annual convergence for men in ministry. Only this time, we wouldn't be hearing MacArthur preach. We would be hearing others praise God for the grace and gifting he showered on MacArthur's life and the eternal reward he is now receiving.Scripture was read by MacArthur recorded from a past sermon. John Piper offered a personal reflection. Alistair Begg prayed. Joni Eareckson Tada sang and spoke. MacArthur's two sons, Matt and Mark, offered personal perspectives. Sinclair Ferguson preached. Christ-exalting hymns were sung by the Gettys, soloists, choir, and congregation. It was two hours and forty-five minutes of worshiping God for the good work He did in the life and ministry of John MacArthur.MacArthur's eldest son Matt joins us today on the program. Matt and his wife have been married for 40 years and are the parents of three adult children and grandparents of seven. He works in the investment management business and also serves as the president of Grace to You. Matt will offer unique insight into his dad and what the family was aiming to accomplish in the service.---------------------------------Watch John MacArthur's Memorial ServiceJohn MacArthur biography by Iain Murray
