Up To Jerusalem - Teaching 19 Scripture: Matthew 28:9-10, 1 Corinthians 15:5, Luke 24:13-49, John 20:19-23 Today we continue with our look at the events of the day of Jesus' resurrection and those who saw Him that day.  Pastor talks about the Gospel writers (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) and that their stories were written as eye witnesses .  These are the accounts of people who were there. Last class we looked at those who had seen Jesus first that morning, it was the women who came to the tomb and saw Him, but the first of His disciples to see Him was Peter - the one who had denied knowing Jesus 3 times during His arrest and trial. Consider the emotions that had to be going on in Peter's head and heart since his denial of Jesus and now he's face to face, one on one with Him. (1 Corinthains 15:5) What was this meeting like….very personal… Then Jesus meet s2 men on the Road to Emmaus, family members, but they didn't recognize Him. They tell Him all about the events of the women and that they didn't know what to think of it all. They were doubtful about the truth of what they had heard and Jesus says, “How foolish you are and how slow you are in believing all the prophets have spoken.” And then He explains to them what was said in all the scriptures concerning Himself.  A crash course in biblical truth! That had to be an amazing conversation! At dinner with them, Jesus breaks the bread and gives thanks and suddenly they realize that the man they've been with is the risen Jesus! And then He vanishes. The men run back to Jerusalem to where the disciples and others are staying to tell them that Jesus is indeed risen. As they begin to share their story suddenly Jesus is there with them and says, “Peace be with you.”  Jesus startles the group and some think they are seeing a ghost, and so Jesus encourages them to touch Him and then He asks for something to eat. Yet some still were struggling to believe what they were seeing and then Jesus opened their minds so they could understand the scriptures. Jesus goes on to share the “cliff notes” of the Hebrew Scriptures to them:     ⁃    Messiah will suffer     ⁃    Messiah will rise from the dead on the third day     ⁃    Repentance for the forgiveness of sin will be preached in His Name     ⁃    Preached to all nations     ⁃    Beginning at Jerusalem The resurrection of Jesus is a call to repentance for the forgiveness of sins, to repent and believe the Good News. This message is for us today. A message we are to respond to. Not with half-hearted intellectual belief. This is about a lifetime commitment and coming to grips with the Living God who gave His only Son for us, raised Him from the grave and who will come back as ruler of all - Jesus. Jesus calls us to repentance and to believe the Good News of who He is.  We can see we are sinners and need a Savior and Jesus calls us to repent = change of mind and change of direction (a U-turn). How we live is a response to knowing we have a Savior and wanting to live for Him because God loved me so much He gave His only Son die for my sins, and so then I want my life to give glory to Him. Repent and believe is not a popular message in the American church today - It's not a message people want to hear. We tend to prefer that God approve of what we do rather than us to approve what God says. And what God says is what Jesus speaks. And He calls us to repent for the forgiveness of sin and proclaim that to all the world! Then Jesus tells them they are witnesses to these things. We are witnesses too. We can all share how Jesus has changed our lives. Then Jesus tells them that the Holy Spirit is coming. The resurrection of Jesus ushers in a new way of God dwelling with His people. They are told to wait there until they receive what God has promised to give them. The Holy Spirit - whom the Father had promised. Resurrection Day is the most remarkable day in history. A glorious day!  Jesus continues to open peoples minds to the scriptures today and continues to draw us to Himself.  And the Holy Spirit continues to be poured out! Up to Jerusalem is part five of our Two Year Study of the Gospels. Up To Jerusalem is the story of the plan of God to redeem the world, and the story of a Savior willing to obey the Father's plan. As we study Jesus' final days, we will be impacted as we discover the Love of God for each one of us.  This study is great for large group, small group or home group study and can be started at any time.

A Passion for His Presence: When Worship Deteriorates

What is worship? Here are a few definitions:Worship is the total adoring response of man to the Eternal God. Worship is responding to all that God is with all that I have.Worship is an active response to God whereby we declare His worth.Do you see some common threads? First of all, worship is an active response. There is no such thing as passive worship. Secondly, worship is to God. It's not “me”-focused. It is ever and always a God-centered activity. But what happens when worship deteriorates into something else? And how does that happen? To help us answer those questions, we're going to look at one of the darkest chapters in the Old Testament— a time when the worship of God's people totally unraveled. In Exodus 32, Moses had gone up Mt. Sinai to receive the law from God and had been gone for many days. The people started getting restless, so they went to Aaron (Moses' brother) and asked him to “make us gods” to worship. So, Aaron created a golden calf and invited the people to worship it. The people's worship of this “god” devolved into drunkenness and revelry. When God saw this, He was angry and ready to destroy them. How did this happen? How did their worship so utterly deteriorate and what observations can we make related to our own worship? 1.     Worship deteriorates when it becomes casual. These people did not abandon worship or forget God altogether. They simply wanted to make Him more palatable, more controllable. You might be wondering, “Did they know any better? What had their encounters with God been like before this?”  Exodus 19 gives us a snapshot. God has given Moses instructions to gather the people to encounter Him. God's presence was displayed through fire, smoke, thunder, lightning, and the sound of a trumpet. The holiness and fearsomeness of God filled the people with awe. Could you imagine anyone in that crowd picking their fingernails or chatting with their neighbor? Would anyone dare critique the presentation? No! They trembled with holy fear because they realized they were in the presence of the Living God!Friends, when we gather for worship, the same God is here! But all too easily we can lose our sense of awe and trivialize God by making worship casual. Here are three ways you can begin to challenge the drift to casual worship.Come prepared. We prepare for what matters. Come on time. We prioritize what matters.Come with a sense of commitment. Commit to worship with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.2.     Worship deterioriates when it becomes consumer-oriented.The Israelites asked Aaron to “make us gods to go before us.” They focus was on them. Consumer-oriented worship has its emphasis on what I want, what I get out of it. It sits back with arms folded and says, “Wow me.”  It critiques worship as one might a show. But real worship focuses on God and responding to Him as He deserves, not as we prefer.  3.     Worship deteriorates when it becomes compartmentalized. That is, it becomes disconnected from life.  In Ex. 32, the people went straight from “worship” to behavior that was disgusting and dishonoring to God. If our worship is simply going through motions, God is not impressed. Worship is meaningful to God only to the extent that it is the reflection of the authentic desires of my heart and an extension of my lifestyle on a day by day basis.  Text: Exodus 32, 19Originally recorded on January 10, 1999, at Fellowship Missionary Church, Fort Wayne, IN

Forty years of oppression from the Philistines followed Israel's sin. Manoah, of the tribe of Dan had a barren wife. She, although unnamed, is the central character of the story of chapter 13. She has an unknown visitor who is later discovered to be an angel: Hebrews 13 verse 2. The angel told the barren woman that she is to have a son. She and her unborn son were both to be Nazarites from this day. The requirements for Nazarites are listed in verses 4-5 (see also Numbers 6). The angel also describes Samson's mission, for so the son would be called (Judges 13 verse 24). Samson's mission was “to begin to save Israel from the hand of the Philistines” (verse 5). This task was completed by David several generations later. In verses 6-7 Manoah's wife relates to her husband the stranger's visit and his message to her. Verse 8 tells us that Manoah and his wife realise that their visitor was a man of God. Samson's father prays for God to again send the man. Verse 9 says that the angel was sent again to the woman. Why does Manoah seem to be bypassed? Perhaps it's symbolic of the virgin birth in the bypassing of Joseph's line and we can compare this with the angel Gabriel appearing to the virgin Mary. Samson's mother runs to fetch her husband. Verses 12-14 tell of the angel's repeating to Manoah the earlier message to his wife. In verse 15 Manoah offers hospitality to the angel. The angel replies in verse 16 by saying that he will not eat the food, but that it should be offered to the LORD. Manoah asks the angel's name. The angel says that his name is “wonderful” (Hebrew – ‘pele' and is used of the miracles performed when Israel was delivered from Egypt). A kindred word is used in verse 19 which describes the angel's stretching out his staff, resulting in fire consuming the offering and the angel ascending to God in the smoke from the offering. Was this the same angel who had delivered Israel from Egypt by inflicting the 10 wonders, or plagues? Finally, realising that their visitor was an angel, Manoah mistakenly believes that doom will overtake them; until the sense and reason of his wife prevails. She logically says to her husband that if their Sovereign was going to destroy them why would He send an angel with a glorious message of deliverance. The last verses describe the birth of Samson, whose name means “brilliant sunshine”, whose personality appears to be like his name. As Samson grows up in the camp of Dan – the location of the remnants of the tribe that endeavoured to faithfully occupy their inheritance when the majority of their tribe migrated to the Phoenician coast described in Judges 17 and 18. In the camp of Dan Samson's spirit is stirred by Yahweh's spirit in order to bring this Judge to afflict the Philistines. In our Isaiah chapter, 37, Hezekiah recognises the extremity of the nation's apparent impending fate and his own imminent demise due to an extreme failure of health. King Hezekiah does the only logical thing – he leaves it to God by making it a matter of faithfulness and prayer. We notice in verse 4 that Hezekiah's servants acknowledge that despite the seeming hopelessness of their situation, “the Living God” who the Assyrians have reproached may arise in judgment to vindicate and glorify His name. Likewise the king himself reiterated the same incontrovertible truth verse 17. King Hezekiah, ignores the threat of the overwhelming numbers of the mighty army camped outside Jerusalem's walls and the king's own impending death, prays to Judah's Omnipotent Creator. Hezekiah humbly prays for the Almighty to arise and deliver His people and erase the words of reproach that had blasphemously been said against Yahweh their God. Hezekiah sends the three nobles, named in chapter 36, with the king's answer to Rabshakeh's demand to surrender. He tells the Assyrian general in verses 22-29 how the daughter of Zion disdains the futility of the Assyrian rants. The prophet Isaiah is sent to Hezekiah with the LORD's response and sign that He would save His people. Verses 33-35 says that Judah needed to do nothing except to “stand still and see the salvation of Yahweh”. Verses 36-38 tell of the angel of the LORD smiting 185,000 Assyrians in a single night. These verses tell us of the Assyrian king's shameful retreat to Nineveh only to be assassinated by two of his sons. The Apostle Paul May very well had Isaiah 37 in mind when he wrote the words of 1 Timothy 4 verses 9-10. The first 7 verses of 1 Peter 3 outline the principles governing the relationship between wives and husbands. This relationship exists to assist one another to graciously receive an inheritance in the kingdom. Mutual submission – the one to the other is key to a balanced spiritual marriage (compare Ephesians 5 verses 22-33). Outward adornment is to be sparse – the true focus is to be on modesty and a heart centred on our Lord Jesus Christ. Abraham and Sarah provide the model for all time (compare Isaiah 51 verses 1-5). The faithful example of a spouse may in time win her unbelieving husband to Christ's way. The Word of God and prayer are the cement for a successful marriage. And husbands must not lord it over their wives, but rather be prepared, as Christ showed us, to sacrifice themselves for their wives. Verses 8-22 speak of suffering for righteousness' sake. Listen to and contemplate the words of verse 8, “Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind” (ESV). We do not repay evil with evil, but rather by blessing. Verses 10-12 are a protracted quote from Psalm 34 (one of the most frequently quoted Psalms in the New Testament). This is because the course of life is advised for a believer to follow. Once again prayer is stressed as a guiding force. Christ's disciples' lives are to be exemplary in manifesting the holiness of their Father's calling (Leviticus 19verse 13). In suffering for righteousness' sake faithful believers pattern themselves on Christ their head. These disciples become one with our Lord Jesus through belief and baptism; and their identification is a response to a conscience desiring to be reconciled to God. The same attitude was shown by Noah, as he likewise believed the LORD when he built the ark and proclaimed the Almighty's power to save those who trust in the salvation God provides. Our Lord Jesus Christ will return to earth bringing us the longed for deliverance in his coming kingdom. The fourth chapter in commencing with the word ‘for' shows us that it is a linked to the behaviour at the end of chapter 3. The first 11 verses tell us that we are stewards of God's grace. In knowing the extent to which Christ Jesus suffered for the upholding of the righteousness of his Father we too cannot continue in sin as the heedless world does. Without the gospel we are dead, as dead as this wicked world is now. But we have been made alive in Christ. Let our sober minds never forget this. Believers must strive on the behalf of others and with the love of God, outworked in Christ, to extend our Father's graciousness to any and all. Faithful speech must not be self-focussed, but we need speak with God's Words. From verses 12-19 Peter explains that the believer's lot is one of suffering for Christ's sake. The sufferings that the faithful of the diaspora were experiencing was not in any way unexpected – it was because they are living as had their Master and would not be deflected from patterning themselves on him. Like what was seen with our Lord glory and exaltation would follow rejection and persecution. The Scriptures have always shown this to the path of the righteous – see Ezekiel 8 verse 18 to 9 verse 12. Chapter 5 of 1 Peter pursues the theme of humility and of our suffering preceding exaltation and glory. The focus, as always rightly remains upon our Lord Jesus Christ. He is the chief shepherd, as he had taught Peter both by word and example (compare John 21). Peter embraced and accepted that responsibility with fervour. Our Lord Jesus Christ is the good shepherd (John 10). He is also the chief shepherd (1 Peter 5). And Jesus is the great shepherd (Hebrews 13). Our responsibility, like Peter's (who learned it first from his Lord), is to feed God's flock (Psalm 23verse 100). This is done out of a love that reciprocates that of the Father and His Son, not out of compulsion and certainly not for any pay. Those who like their Master clothe themselves with true humility (John 15 and Philippians 2verse 1-11), shall in God's good time be honoured and exalted. Verses 13-14 end the letter with final greetings.

Who is Jesus Christ?  This is the most important question you will ever be asked. A good man? A great teacher? A revolutionary leader? Or is he the Christ, the Son of the Living God?  Who was he? Who is he? Your eternal destiny hangs on your answer.Main Points:1. Jesus came as a savior and as a king, but not an earthly one. He came for a greater purpose. He came to save us from a greater oppression than a Roman army. He came to save us from our sins, that which would keep us from God for eternity. He came to be the King of our hearts.2. This brings us to an important question. Who is this? “Who is Jesus?”  Is he just a historical figure, a religious leader, a philosopher, and a teacher? Was he a revolutionary and a political rebel? Is he an imaginary person and a myth? Or is Jesus the Messiah, the King of the Jews, a Savior, and God in the flesh?3. Have the courage today to put your faith in him and trust him as the savior of your soul.Today's Scripture Verses:Matthew 21:10-11 - “When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?” The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”John 1:1.2.14 - “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”Jesus is our Savior - Matthew 1:21 - "She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”Jesus is our King - Philippians 2:9-11 - “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”Quick Links:Donate to support this podcastLeave a review on Apple PodcastsGet a copy of The 5 Minute Discipleship JournalConnect on SocialJoin The 5 Minute Discipleship Facebook Group

Worship is basic to everything else in the walk of faith. Seeing God for who He really is and responding to Him as he truly deserves is at the center of everything the church believes, practices, and seeks to accomplish. It is so important, that if it gets off track, it is disastrous for the people of God.When the people lost their awe of God and let their worship deteriorate, everything else fell apart. They began to compromise and fall into sin. They lost their passion for the lost around them. They stopped giving sacrificially and dissension arose within their ranks.  When worship got fuzzy it led to cold hearts, hard spirits, and the death of love. The Bible gives us three reasons why worship matters both personally and corporately. 1.     Worship is the dividing line of all humanity. Essentially, all human beings can be divided into two groups: those who willingly bow their knee to the true and Living God, and those who do not…and will not. This line was first seen back in the book of Genesis with the first two people ever born—Cain and Abel. Abel gave God his first and his best, and God was pleased. But Cain only gave “some” of his crops. His worship was careless and mindless, and God was displeased. In the end, Cain's hardened heart led him to murder his brother. (Gen. 4:1-12)  A failure to worship wholeheartedly not only dishonors God, it removes you from God's blessing, and is the first step toward sin gaining a foothold in your life.  2.     Worship is the destiny of the redeemed. We were made to worship. We were saved so that we might “declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.” (1 Pet. 2:9) And one day, when we see Him face to face, we will worship Him fully, an eternal celebration of the wonders and glories of God.But we don't have to wait until then to experience His presence.  You can know the firstfruits of that here and now as you provide Him a throne in your worship. 3.     Worship is the one disctinctive that God cannot give Himself. God is completely self-existent. He depends no one and no thing for anything. And yet, there is one thing He cannot give Himself: people who will worship Him. Indeed, He longs for this. In John 4:23, Jesus said that the Father is seeking those who will worship Him in Spirit and in truth. Will you be one who says, “I will be that kind of worshipper. I will respond to all that You are with all that I have.” Text: Genesis 4:1-12; 1 Peter 2:9; Revelation 19:5-10; John 4:23 Originally recorded on January 3, 1999, at Fellowship Missionary Church, Fort Wayne, IN

In these chapters we meet two heroines through whom God delivered His people- Deborah and Jael. Deborah means bee and she brought sweetness for Israel and a destructive sting for Sisera and his host. She inspired Barak, whose name means lightning, to attack from the heights of Mount Tabor – a position from which escape was impossible with 10,000 men who trusted in God to deliver them. Barak was hesitant in allowing himself to rise to the heights of faith unless strongly encouraged by a mother in Israel, a prophetess of immense faith. Many a brother reluctantly takes on a task only because a wonderful woman stands up to support him. Barak placed his life and the 10,000 courageous men of Naphtali to place themselves at Yahweh's disposal. Let us too, despite our shortcomings, make ourselves available to do our Sovereign's will. When we do we will like Barak find strength in our time of need and the evidence of the Almighty energetically working in concert with His children. Despite our weaknesses the LORD uses His instruments to do His work. Sisera fled, only for the mighty general to fall victim to a courageous and faithful woman. Sisera fell victim to an insignificant tent peg. The praise and thanksgiving to God is celebrated in Deborah's song. Deborah describes the desperate and vulnerable state in which Israel found themselves. But the situation was changed by women and men who overcame by their faith and helped the Almighty to deliver His people. The prophetess also calls upon the LORD to judge those who apathetically fled the fight. Let us never underestimate the power of faithful women to inspire courageous activity in the ecclesia of the Living God.

Up To Jerusalem - Teaching 17 Scripture: Luke 23:26-34, Mark 15:21, Hosea 10:8, John 19:19-27, Mark 15:29-32, Luke 23:39-43, Matthew 27:45-49, Psalm 22, John 19:28-30., Luke 23:46, Psalm 31:5, Matthew 27:50-54. Today we take a look at a moving, powerful and emotionally packed teaching on the subject of Jesus' crucifixion.  We will explore the accounts of Jesus' crucifixion using all four gospels as each gives us unique details and special insights. Jesus' crucifixion was painful, prolonged, humiliating and demeaning, but the four gospel writers do not dwell on the sufferings of Jesus. What they dwell on is what He won for us and what He offers to each of us. Our story opens with Jesus' walk to Golgotha (Hebrew word - translates to “Place of the Skull” - Calvary - is the Latin word for ‘Place of the Skull.”) As Jesus was brutally beaten, tortured and whipped He is exhausted, weak, in great pain and unable to carry His cross to Golgotha, so Simon of Cyrene is forced to carry Jesus' cross. Jesus' first words from the cross were “Father, forgive them, they don't know what they are doing.” A display of His love even from the cross, even in extreme suffering and incredible pain, He cries out on behalf of others. Don't ever doubt God's love. No matter how we've fallen, our God loves us dearly! The enemy likes to make us think that God is the bad guy, but the truth is - if you want to know what God is like and want to know how He feels about you, then all you have to do is look at Jesus, the One who is the visible image of the invisible God - and He says, Father, forgive them.” He offers mercy to all of us - we all are sinners and we all need a Savior and that's who Jesus is! Our story continues with Pilate making a sign in 3 languages: Hebrew, Latin and Greek. The sign says, “King of the Jews.” The way Romans announced the crime for which the individual was being executed was to post it over their heads on their cross. When Pilate had the sign placed above Jesus' head the Chief Priests became upset. Pastor takes time to dig into some truly interesting insights into why the sign made them so angry. The next words Jesus says are to His mother and the disciple next to her at the foot of His cross. He says, “Woman, here is your son.” And to the disciple He says, “Here is your mother.” Jesus' second set of words from the cross were again for others and of showing his deep love and concern for His mother. Jesus was crucified between two criminals, one of them joins the crowd in mocking Jesus. The one not joining the crowd says to the one that was, “Don't you fear God? This man has done nothing wrong,..” Then turning to Jesus he says, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” Jesus replies, “I tell you, today you will be with Me in paradise.” This criminal displays great faith in asking, Jesus, who is beaten, brutalized and nailed to a cross, “Remember me!” This man saw what is unseen - He saw into heaven. He saw what is true.  Again Jesus' words are for others, these comforting words of promise given this man hanging on the cross next to Him. The promise is for all those who believe in Him, that we will be with Him and we will see His kingdom in all its glory and fulfillment. As we continue with the story, darkness came over the land in the middle of the day and Jesus cries out, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” Jesus endured the judgement of God for us - He became sin for us. Pastor talks about these very words of being forsaken having been written in Psalm 22, 1000 years earlier, and they were words that every Jew was familiar with. Pastor shares how that would have impacted those around Him hearing Him say these words - they were a testimony to who Jesus is! Then Jesus says, “I am thirsty.” And He is offered wine vinegar on a sponge on the end of a hyssop stalk. Pastor shares insight into this prophetic action of using the hyssop stalk being lifted to Jesus to drink from.  When Jesus had the drink, He said, “It is finished.” Meaning PAID IN FULL. The debt for sin was paid. The price for our salvation has been paid in full. Jesus drank the cup of the wrath of God, He is the sacrificial victim - the Real Passover Lamb, who offered up His blood for us all and His blood covers our sin. And then Jesus' speaks, “Father, into Your hand I commit My Spirit.” And He dies.     ⁃    The price is paid     ⁃    The battle is won     ⁃    The victory is assured At Jesus' last words the curtain of the Temple is torn in two. Why?… This was a massive curtain that separated the Holy Place from the Holy of Holies where a High Priest went once a year before God making atonement for the sins of the people. Now all of a sudden people, not just the High Priests can look into the Holy of Holies and have access to the Living God. God dealt with human sin in the very Person of His own Son. The curtain is now open and the way to the Father is exposed - all are given access into the place where only a High Priest could go because Jesus open it through His sacrifice on the cross. Our time together ends with the words of the centurion guarding Jesus on the cross as the day turned dark, as the curtain tore, as the earth shook, rocks split and people walked out of tombs, the centurion exclaims, “Surely, He was the Son of God!” What a shocking day this was!  This was the day the Savior gave His life for all! And it changed everything because now - He offers life to all who believe in Him. Join us next time as we discover that Jesus is our Victor! White smoke graced the sky over the Vatican. The catholic faithful and the world then knew that the successor to the deceased Pope Francis had been elected by the conclave of cardinals. The new pope was none other than:ROBERT PREVOST, 69 YEARS OF AGE.There was nothing remarkable or new about the election of this pope as there had been several hundred before him, except for one thing. Robert Prevost was an AMERICAN and consequently became the very first American pope in the history of the catholic church. That was a surprise to some, even shocking to others.Robert Prevost was from Chicago, Illinois. He grew up a baseball fan and his team was the Chicago White Sox. I wonder what he thinks of them these days, a sad sack of a baseball franchise, losers year after year. Prevost rose through the hierarchy of the church as priest, bishop, cardinal, special advisor to Pope Francis, and gained notoriety among the cardinals of the church throughout the world because of his close relationship with Pope Francis. Now, the world and the catholic faithful wonder what this man really believes, how he thinks, what his social and political values are, and whether or not he will continue the somewhat progressive policies and decision making of Francis or lead the church in a different direction. Conservative cardinals had called for the election of the new pope in the mold of John Paul II, a bold conservative pope, returning the catholic church to its roots, heritage, tradition, but those cardinals were very much in the minority. They indicated to the conclave of cardinals that they strongly felt:“We desperately need a man of the spirit.”That plea, however, fell on deaf ears. One cardinal eloquently stated that our culture (American) and the world at large is one SICK AT HEART. We are, said he:DIVORCED FROM THE MYSTERIOUS AND THE SACRED.The real power of the church, convincingly spiritual in nature, has been eroded, resulting in a church fragmented, attendance at mass down and the rituals and traditions in a state somewhat of disrespect and in some sense unnecessary. All of thatsuch vocal cardinals hoped would change with the election of the new pope, RobertPrevost, who will be known to the world as:POPE LEO XIVAnd more from the conservative element in the conclave of cardinals. Said one:“The last thing we need is for spirituality to be updated, modernized, maderelevant to our alienated souls.”Which of course means that the church needs to return to roots and not re-modernize.The roman catholic church and the long line of popes harken back in a line to Peter, aGalilean fisherman, who became a passionate disciple of our Lord Jesus Christ who, inPeter's conversion, told him that he would no longer fish for fish but that he wouldbecome a:FISHER OF MEN,And, Jesus said, that upon this rock I will build my church. It seems as though thissmall, minority group of cardinals was hoping and praying that the new pope wouldhave as a burning priority the call to all men that they, like Peter, would becomefishers of men, strong believers in the saving grace of Jesus Christ, the real head of thechurch, and the son of the Living God. Now, it is up to Pope Leo XIV to show the worldwhether that will be so.The first words of this new pope were encouraging. They were as follows:“PEACE BE WITH YOU! DEAREST BROTHERS AND SISTERS, THIS WAS THEFIRST GREETING OF THE RISEN CHRIST, THE GOOD SHEPHERD WHO GAVE HISLIFE FOR THE FLOCK OF GOD. I, TOO, WOULD LIKE THIS GREETING OF PEACE TOENTER YOUR HEARTS, TO REACH YOUR FAMILIES AND ALL PEOPLE, WHEHEVERTHEY ARE.”This new pope wants all humankind to believe in the:RISEN CHRISTAmen.Vatican experts however have said that Cardinal Prevost had very similar values toFrancis, having been made a cardinal by Pope Francis. Those priorities were thechampioning of the poor and more which others have said indicate a socialistic form ofbelief and frame of mind. Time will tell.President Trump congratulated Robert Prevost and hoped to meet the new pope, whileJD Vance, who converted to Catholicism in 2019, also congratulated Leo XIV andoffered his prayers that God would bless him in his important work.Vatican experts have compared Pope Leo XIV's championing of the poor and themigrants, especially those who made their way to America illegally or not, to that ofPope Francis. Said one Vatican expert:“He's (Robert Prevost) right out of Francis' playbook.”If so, that will come as a disappointment to the conservative element in the catholicchurch and in the conclave of cardinals. It is very probable that Pope Leo XIV willfollow very much in the footsteps of Pope Francis.Vatican experts have also theorized that the church has long hesitated to name anAmerican pope because of the United States' status as a global superpower. They fearthe concentration of power. However, they do believe that Pope Leo XIV will have aglobal perspective and tend to the needs of the global church.Time will tell. The catholic church faces some pressing issues including migration, wars, climate change, inclusion of LGBTQ Catholics, women in church leadership, andthe Trump presidency which Pope Leo XIV eschews and has shown disagreement andeven disrespect for President Trump. He made a somewhat encouraging statementabout the western media as follows:“Extraordinarily effected in fostering within the general public enormoussympathy for beliefs and practices that are at odds with the gospel.”Leo XIV also said that he opposes ordaining women which will be disappointing tomore modern catholic elements. The bottom line of course, especially to evangelical and born-again Christians, is thatthe head of the church, the real church, is none other than:JESUS CHRIST HIMSELF.Everything that matters about Christianity comes from Him and is about Him,including the salvation process. Conservative Catholics want the church (and the newpope) to return to conservative principles, the real roots of the church, and to becomea spiritual force and not a political one. Today, say church experts, everything turnspolitical or becomes involved, and in the case of the catholic church, the real missionbecomes watered down. We should hope that this new pope will once again emphasizeand reprioritize the most essential belief in all of Christendom, and the church ofJesus Christ, that HE is the cornerstone, the rock, the central force in all ofChristendom.

2 Year Gospel Study - week 74 (Friday, 05-30-25) Up To Jerusalem - Teaching 16 Scripture: John 18:28-32, Mark 15:2-5, John 18:33-38, Luke 23:4-16, Matthew 27:15-26 John 19:1-16 Pastor explores Jesus' trial using all 4 gospels and proposing a possible timeline that tells the story with new insight. Also, throughout today's teaching he shares interesting and important historical information and relationship information between the players in this day's events that brings greater insight and understanding to this story of Jesus' trial.  We tend to look at the story of Jesus' trial and crucifixion as a story we are familiar with -- the old, old story of Jesus and His love…. But today Pastor will bring a freshness that will make it new as we look at the unique things each of the Gospels' authors has to say about the events that led up to Jesus' crucifixion. Pastor will use all four gospels, combining them together in a dramatic picture of the day's event. We pick up the story of Jesus' trial with Him leaving Caiaphas the High Priest's home and going before the Roman Governor, Pontius Pilate.  It is the continuation of the story of the day we call Good Friday. Pastor shares pictures from a past trip to Jerusalem that show the possible place of Jesus' public trial.  Once everyone is in the courtyard, Pilate makes this a legal Roman trial by asking “what charges are you bringing against this man?” But the high priests and their associates didn't want a full Roman trial - they simply wanted the Roman Governor to give them permission to execute Jesus. (At this time in Roman history permission was necessary for the Sanhedrin to be allowed to execute an individual) Pilate didn't give them that permission, instead now they have a legal trial. Many charges were being brought against Jesus - all sorts of charges and Pilate takes Jesus out of the public courtyard and into the Palace for a private conversation to figure out what Jesus has done.  Following the private conversation - Pilate tells the crowd He finds no basis for a charge against Jesus and because Jesus was Galilean, He was under Herod's jurisdiction. As it happens, Herod was in Jerusalem for the Passover so Pilate sends Jesus across town to see Herod Antipas. Herod had been longing to meet Jesus and asks Him many questions, but Jesus does not answer against any of the accusations and charges. Herod's soldiers ridicule and mock Jesus - dressing Him in a purple robe and send Him back to Pilate. Back in the courtyard of Pilate's place, Pilate brings Jesus before the high priests and people stating that both he and Herod find Jesus guilty of nothing, but the crowd rebels. Pilate says he will beat and torture Jesus and let Him go. And again the crowd disagrees greatly with this decision and Pilate then asks the crowd if he should release Jesus or Barabbas (a criminal). It's at this point that Pilate receives a letter from his wife about Jesus because of a dream she had and the note says that Pilate should have nothing to do with the innocent man, Jesus.  The chief priests and elders persuade the crowd to ask for the release of Barabbas and yell for Jesus to be crucified. This crowd shouting “Crucify Him” was not the crowd who had welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem with hosannas earlier in the week when He rode into Jerusalem on a donkey.  This crowd in Pilate's courtyard were most likely temple employees. The temple at that time employed about 20,000+ people and so the high priests had probably gathered this crowd in their favor. Pilate at this point says again that he finds no basis for a charge against Jesus, gives in to the crowd, washes his hands, claims innocence, releases Barabbas, and has Jesus flogged.   Pastor shares in depth what a flogging from Roman soldiers was like during this time in history. It was an incredible cruel torture, horribly brutal and painful. Pilate hands Jesus over to be crucified. In his soul, Pilate knows injustice has been committed, yet Jesus goes silently and quietly, just as it says in Isaiah 53.  Jesus doesn't try to disprove the charges against Him of blasphemy - remaining silent - as the charges are true. He IS the Son of the Living God. More than that, the accusation is a statement of Truth!  Jesus is the Son of the Living God and we see the Messiah being turned over into the hands of wicked men and being crucified not just for others - BUT for each one of us. Here's the question: WHO REALLY PUT JESUS ON THE CROSS?  It wasn't the High Priests, Roman soldiers, Pontius Pilate, or even all people ULTIMATELY THE ANSWER IS ME. I did. It's my sin that put Him there.  This story is personal.  It is a beastly, brutal and tragic story but it is also the old, old story of Jesus and His love… Pastor closes with a heartfelt prayer acknowledging all the Savior endured.  And then ends with a teaser about next week's class that may well be absolutely shocking - something that's often overlooked yet so dramatic it will cause us to gulp!   Join us! Joshua 16 outlines the inheritance of the tribe of Ephraim. This was Joshua's own tribe and it is significant that the faithful leader, who was the only other spy to completely trust in the Living God. Joshua together with Caleb courageously stood against the rebellious congregation of Israel. Sadly this tribe fell away from the values of Joshua in the long era when judges ruled the nation of Israel and were known for their great pride. At the division of the kingdom in the time of Rehoboam and his servant Jeroboam. Ten tribes went with Jeroboam and formed the northern kingdom of Ephraim ie Israel. Verses 1-9 describe the boundaries and territory allocated to Ephraim. The last verse of the chapter closes on a disturbing note, similarly to that in chapter 15. It tells of Ephraim failure to destroy the Canaanites.

Today's witnesses are from Matthew West's website called popwe.org. If you don't know who Matthew West is, he is a singer, songwriter, and storyteller. This website is for the non-profit that he has with his father, a pastor. Matthew and his father encourage people to share their stories. They have various categories of stories. Today, I chose two testimonies from the Salvation Category. Often, we can hear our own story in someone else's story. When we listen to others tell their story, it helps us see that we are not alone. When we hear how God worked in their situation, it gives us hope that He will work in ours, too! I pray when you hear these testimonies, you get the faith and hope to believe that miracles can happen in your situation, also. I pray you know that God is there with you, and if you invite Him into your situation, He can help. I hope you enjoy these testimonies.Denice: My grandson, Elijah (age 19), was an unbeliever his entire life. I've been praying that he would find God. He was invited to a Bible study that 2 of his good friends started. He was resistant at first, but his friends never stopped inviting him. And finally, he gave in and went. I wept with joy.A few months into this study, Elijah asked me if he could host the study at my house. I couldn't say “Yes!!” fast enough! 25 kids, aged 15 to 29, showed up that Wednesday night and filled my entire living room. I was so proud of this group telling them they are disciples on the ground – that we are living the year of the Lord's favor today. I told them the Gospel is still moving, and they are a part of it. They are no different that the 12 disciples they are reading about in the Bible. Discipleship is still happening through you and me, and the Kingdom of God is like a mustard seed. The Kingdom will spread in you and through you. The Gospel works because of who Jesus is; not because of us. I am proud to be a seed. These young people take turns leading the study and I have had the pleasure to sit in on several of their studies. It blows my mind. My oldest grandson, Justus (age 29) has also joined this group and has never missed a Wednesday night. I can see the changes in both of them. God is so good… And to witness this is powerful. These young people, dedicated to the Lord, are now getting together on Thursday as well! They were studying sin, and I reminded them that the Living God does not hate sin because you broke a rule. He hates sin because it breaks you. Sin weakens you. And that sometimes we pray for our circumstances to change when maybe God wants YOU to change in the circumstance.I am so proud of this group of young people. It has become a great opportunity to share my faith and to watch God move in their lives. This is what prayer can do….  So don't stop praying! Next is Brad:Hello West Family,I would like to share with you my testimony of opening my heart to Jesus Christ and how He completely changed my life.My mom left my father when I was around one year old. She soon remarried my stepfather, who she is still married to today. He had two daughters and one son. His son stayed with us more often than the daughters did, so I instantly gained a brother who I grew up with. He became like a blood brother to me.We were raised going to church, but as time went on, we attended less and less due to constant fighting between my mother and stepfather. My biological father was barely in my life and lived in California, while I lived in Kansas. As we stopped going to church, it felt like my mom and stepfather became increasingly strict with us, and discipline became harsh—belts and paddles, being slapped in the face, soap shoved down our throats, etc.Time passed, and we went through the typical phases—Boy Scouts, sports, family activities—and while at times it seemed harsh, there were good times as well. I was diagnosed with depression in my early teens and was quickly put on medication, as that seemed to be the only solution at the time.As we got older, my brother moved out after graduating from high school. For his 21st birthday, he invited me to the lake with his friends. But at the last minute, he told me they weren't going to the lake anymore and that I couldn't hang out with them, probably because they planned on going to bars and drinking. That hurt me deeply. So, on the night of my brother's birthday, I ended up staying at a friend's house. Strangely, I couldn't sleep at all. I felt as if something wasn't right. As I was tossing and turning, I heard my friend's phone ringing in the middle of the night, which struck me as odd. His mom called downstairs to me, saying the phone was for me. I answered, and it was my mom. She told me something had happened, but she couldn't talk and handed the phone to my sister. I was told that my brother Jason had been in an automobile accident and didn't make it. My brother and his friend had both decided to leave an Applebee's restaurant after drinking heavily and get into my brother's friend's brand-new Firebird. They made the tragic decision to drink and drive. They were traveling at a high rate of speed when they hit a telephone pole. My brother died instantly, and his friend barely made it out alive. In an instant, my whole life changed. From that moment on, my life spiraled. I struggled with uncontrolled drinking, sleeping with different partners, failed relationships (one of which resulted in a child), and on-and-off jobs. Nothing seemed to be going right.I prayed to God for someone to come into my life, and He gifted me with Elisabeth, who is now my ex-wife. I jumped into that relationship quickly. We lived together within three months, married soon after, and had two children. She essentially became the mother to my first child, as her mother was in and out of jail and struggling with drugs. We bought a house, had three kids, and life seemed good. I opened my heart to God, and we attended church. But then, I wanted to live life my own way instead of following the path God had planned for me. Ultimately, I lost everything. Elisabeth and I divorced and ended up selling the house. For the past 10 years, I tried living life on my terms. My mental health deteriorated, I was drinking excessively, and I even started taking pills. I slept with multiple women, and everything spiraled out of control. I treated my children poorly, and my anxiety, stress, and worries were overwhelming. However, a couple of months ago, I made the decision to open my heart fully to Jesus Christ once again. I've completely changed my mindset and behavior. I am now more mindful of how I interact with people, especially at work, and I'm committed to not treating people poorly or gossiping about them. I've started reading the Bible every day and am trying to live by its teachings. My children and I now go out and write Bible verses and encouraging messages on sidewalks with sidewalk chalk. We listen to Christian artists like you and sing along together in praise to Jesus. I even took my children to their first Winter Jam.Jesus Christ is alive and can change anyone.Thank you for your time.Your Brother in Christ,BradThank you so much to both of you for sharing your stories. I appreciate you being vulnerable and sharing your story so that others know they are not alone. It also shows them that if God got you through it, he will get them through it too!
