This is our first in a series of episodes that reflect how the events we are living through today will impact the struggle to save the planet for tomorrow. We'll interview a host of professionals form academia, economics, venture capital, institutional investment, advocacy and activism to give context to where we stand in our efforts to combat climate change. We're thrilled to kick off the series on Earth Day with Jackie Ostfeld, Director of the Sierra Club's Outdoors for All. In this episode Jackie and Lex talk about the advocacy work currently underway at the Sierra Club, particularly what they are doing to protect communities at risk and expand equal access to the outdoors. Right now we're all living in a new, smaller world, but that won't last forever. We talk about how our collective efforts to combat corona through social distancing has impact the work Sierra Club's activism and what they've done to adapt. Briefly, we talk a walk back into a historical context, touching on the legacy left by Sierra Club founder John Muir, both positive and checkered. And finally, Jackie leaves us with a message of optimism for the future.

Stacy’s Wild Idea: To experience places he and others served in war through outdoor adventures, overcome addiction and use adventure (and humor) for good. Not many of my interviews start with a story about getting kidnapped that are also comedic. But at six-foot-seven with an even bigger personality, Stacy Bare is not your average guy or storyteller.  He received a Bronze Star for his time spent serving in Iraq from 2006 to 2007, but struggled with depression, addiction and even contemplated suicide when he returned home from war. When a friend introduced him to rock climbing, however, the course of his life changed forever. Soon after, Stacy created Veterans’ Expeditions and Adventure Not War, taking vets outside and even back to the places they experienced war from the perspective of someone enjoying the outdoors. In 2014, he was named the National Geographic Adventurer of the Year, a well-deserved title. Currently the director of The Sierra Club Outdoors, the National Director of Programming and Operations at The Phoenix, as well as a brand champion at The North Face, he’s a sought after speaker and presenter with stories about him everywhere from Men's Journal to Outside Magazine, and for good reason. On this episode we talk about war, the power of the outdoors, how to start a movement, climbing with Alex Honnold, skiing in Iraq, addiction, and so much more. This episode is dedicated to Ann Krcik, an executive at The North Face, and a mentor of Stacy’s, who helped paved the way for many women (and men) in the outdoor industry. Listen to this episode if:  You or someone you know is a veteran. You’ve ever survived a trauma. You want to start a movement. You love getting other people outside. You want to laugh at a funny man telling a great story. For full show notes, including guest links and books mentioned during the episode, visit: http://wildideasworthliving.com/65

First Exposure to the Outdoors So right before two years old and my brother was probably six my parents moved the family to Botswana. My dad was an agricultural professor at the university just outside of Gaborone which is the capital of Botswana. I have this memory, I don't know if it's actually my memory or if it's just stories that have been told to me and I've seen the slideshow photos but I distinctly remember trying to climb up on top of a termite mound. These termite mounds are absolutely huge and I have memories of that. I got to know the Okavango and just doing some really cool stuff like that. Then my family moved us back to eastern South Dakota which is where I grew up. From about age four or five on I was in Brookings, South Dakota. Home of the South Dakota State University fighting Jackrabbits! The highest point in my hometown with a covered landfill and I was running up and down that little hill and then around the bluffs of eastern South Dakota on the big Sioux River. South Dakota, Minnesota and Nebraska was where I grew up and I spent a lot of time camping, running around and just being a kid and doing a lot of stupid stuff. From as early as he can remember, Stacy Bare wanted to be in the military. To him it was adventure, coolness, and selfless service, all in one. When Stacy finally got to be the soldier he always dreamed of, he went to war, and served with honor during Operation Iraqi Freedom. But when he came home, his life began to unravel. War had never left him. After battling addictions and a downward spiral that was sure to end in death, Stacy found peace in the outdoors. He became a climber and mountaineer, and is now helping other veterans find that same peace through adventure in the mountains and teaching outdoor leadership. Among other things Stacy is the Director of Sierra Club Outdoors and co-founder of Veterans Expeditions - a non-profit that seeks to enrich and heal the lives of veterans, especially those who suffer from PTSD. He is also a brand ambassador for The North Face and Keen footwear, and was named the National Geographic Adventurer of the Year in 2014. He is an incredible, motivating individual, who we are no doubt honored to have on the show! www.adventurenotwar.com | www.thenorthface.com | www.sierraclub.org | www.keenfootwear.com | www.vetexpeditions.com

This week's warrior is Army veteran Stacy Bare. Stacy Bare is a skier, climber, mountaineer, and sometimes surfer who served one tour of duty in Iraq as a Civil Affairs Team Leader after being recalled from the Individual Ready Reserve. He received his commission into the United States Army from the University of Mississippi and is currently Director of Sierra Club's Mission Outdoors program. Through direct programming, public education and advocacy, Mission Outdoors combats the growing divide between America and the outdoors by increasing opportunities for all to improve their overall well-being by exploring and enjoying the natural world. The goal of Sierra Club Military Outdoors is to ensure that service members, veterans, and their families have the skills, exposure, knowledge, and confidence to access the great outdoors. Time spent in nature not only promotes mental health, emotional resiliency, and leadership development prior to deployment, it provides invaluable know-how to help returning vets enjoy and engage with nature upon returning from deployments. Many veterans experience difficulty adjusting to civilian life after leaving the service. Time spent outdoors eases the transition and improves both mental health and social skills. Providing service members, veterans, and their families with quality outdoor experiences will help foster the development of a new generation of Sierra Club leaders and supporters from within the military and veteran community, including family members who will work to actively achieve the Sierra Club's mission and become outdoor leaders in their communities. Stacy Bare is the director of Sierra Club Outdoors and co-founder of Veterans Expeditions, a nonprofit which empowers veterans to overcome challenges associated with military service through outdoor training and leadership. These challenges are not foreign to Stacy. After serving in Baghdad for the US Army, he faced post-traumatic stress and adjustment disorders. If it wasn’t for climbing and other experiences in the outdoors, he may not be here to talk to us about it.
