Support the showChcem ťa poprosiť o pomoc. What does a safari look like when the guide isn't a man? Award-winning writer and editor Ellen Carpenter went to Botswana's Okavango Delta to find out. (To learn more, read her Afar story about the experience.) Meet this week's guests Ellen Carpenter is a New York–based culture and travel journalist. She served as editor in chief of Hemispheres, United's inflight magazine, for seven years, and before that was an editor at Rhapsody, Nylon, Spin, and Rolling Stone. Baemule "Bae" Siethuka, 32, grew up in Tutume in northeastern Botswana and was working in HR when she saw African Bush Camps' guiding program posted on Facebook. She became the program's first graduate in 2025 and is now a junior guide at Atzaró Okavango. Tshidi Phalaagae, 28, is a trainee guide from Gaborone, Botswana's capital — a true city girl who came to the program with, in her words, "zero knowledge of nature." At the time of Ellen's visit, she was just a few weeks shy of graduating. Jessica Motshegwa, 26, is a trainee guide from Mmadinare, Botswana, who joined the program in 2025. She once tried to enlist in the Botswana army. A Facebook link from her cousin changed her path. In this episode you'll learn Why more than 90 percent of African safari guides are male — and what one company is doing about it How African Bush Camp(ABC)'s three-year female guiding program works, from theory exams to practical training to first solo drives What it was like for Bae, ABC's first female guide, to complete her training while pregnant — and earn her license when her son was six months old Why Dutch Kasale, ABC's head guide and mentor, says training women from the city is often easier than training men who grew up in the bush What makes a female guide's approach on the game drive feel different The moment Bae manifests a leopard into view About African Bush Camps ABC was founded in 2006 by Beks Ndlovu, one of a handful of Black Africans to own a safari company. He launched the female guiding program in late 2021 with an ambitious goal: 50 percent female guides across all 18 camps in Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia by 2030. There are currently 12 women in the program — eight trainees and four qualified guides. The World Athletics Relays wrapped up Sunday with world records, championship records, and the first automatic qualifiers secured for Budapest and Beijing 2027.Discussed in this episode:- Jamaica broke their own mixed 4x100m world record — 39.62 in the final- USA smashed the mixed 4x400m championship record — 3:07.47- Host nation Botswana won the men's 4x400m in 2:54.47 — third fastest in history — in front of a packed home crowd described as one of the best atmospheres in recent track memory- Norway stunned the field in the women's 4x400m with a world-leading national record of 3:20.96- The race of the meet: The men's 4x400m final produced one of the most jaw-dropping relay performances ever. Botswana (2:54.47), South Africa (2:55.07), and Australia (2:55.20) went 2nd, 3rd, and 4th all time. The world record of 2:54.29 — set by the US in 1993 — survives, but barely. All three anchors were shoulder to shoulder on the final bend before Botswana's Collen Kebinatshipi pulled away with what witnesses described as otherworldly closing speed.- The split that turned heads: South African sprinter Lythe Pillay ran a 42.66 relay split — a stunning leg for an athlete whose individual PB coming in was 44.31.- The lane 3 controversy Another story emerged from Day 1 of the World Relays — and it's a troubling one. Belgian coach Bram Peters posted photographic evidence that the starting line for lane 3 in the 4x400m heats was incorrectly placed, meaning teams in that lane ran short of the full 400 meters.- Why USATF skipped the men's and women's 4x400m – USATF didn't send men's or women's 4x400 teams to Gaborone — and the reasoning is more logical than it might seem.- Allyson Felix announces comeback – Felix announced via TIME that she's coming out of retirement to pursue the 2028 LA Olympics at 42, calling it “Project Six.” Felix's last season best was 50.71 at age 36 in 2022.Mentioned in this episode: These are the questions I would ask the Enhanced Games … if they would let me by Sean Ingle via The Guardian____________Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez + Preet Majithia | @preet_athletics Produced by: Jasmine Fehr | @jasminefehr____________SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSXENDURANCE: Xendurance Protein is designed specifically to help your body recover, rebuild, and get stronger after training. #madeonzencastrMentioned in this episode:The Elephant Festival 2026 – Jetzt Ticket sichern!13.

Giyani Metals Corp (TSX-V:EMM, OTC:CATPF) CEO Charles FitzRoy talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the company's progress in securing financing and advancing its manganese operations. The company has received a letter of interest from the Export–Import Bank (EXIM) of the United States for a potential loan of up to $225 million over 15 years. FitzRoy explained, “This is a very positive step forward for Giyani.” He emphasized that while the offer remains subject to due diligence and the completion of its definitive feasibility study (DFS), the long-term nature of the loan could significantly lower annual payments. Giyani is actively pursuing offtake agreements, especially with US companies. FitzRoy confirmed that sample oxide products have already been shipped to potential offtakers, with High-Purity Manganese Sulphate Monohydrate (HPMSM) production scheduled for Q3 this year. He noted, “There is a big shift in the US towards higher manganese content,” referencing breakthroughs by major US automakers such as Ford and GM. The DFS remains on track for completion in Q1 2026, following adjustments informed by the company's demonstration plant operations in Johannesburg. FitzRoy described the demonstration plant as “the largest of its kind outside of China for battery manganese,” which has provided valuable insights for the DFS. FitzRoy spoke from Botswana, where he attended the Future Minerals Summit in Gaborone. He highlighted strong government and local support for Giyani's fully integrated mine-to-market beneficiation model, with all production processes remaining within Botswana. Dillon Marsh is a South African photographer who currently lives in Cape Town, the city of his birth. Surrounded by the breath-taking landscapes of his native country, he developed a deep appreciation for the natural world at an early age. This has inspired his artistic practice, leading him to explore the tenuous relationship between humans and the world we inhabit. The range of subjects he focusses on is varied, from macro photos of seeds that hitch rides using hooks and barbs, to aerial photos of giant patterns ploughed along the desolate west coast of South Africa. His practice has also seen him explore termite mounds in Gaborone, and the snow-covered peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains. However, he is perhaps best known for his series For What It's Worth in which he combines photography and computer-generated elements to examine the impact that the mining industry has had in his home country. Marsh has exhibited his work internationally and is currently working on several new projects that he plans to publish as books. https://dillonmarsh.com Dr. Grant Scott is the founder/curator of United Nations of Photography, a Senior Lecturer and Subject Co-ordinator: Photography at Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, a working photographer, documentary filmmaker, BBC Radio contributor and the author of Professional Photography: The New Global Landscape Explained (Routledge 2014), The Essential Student Guide to Professional Photography (Routledge 2015), New Ways of Seeing: The Democratic Language of Photography (Routledge 2019). His film Do Not Bend: The Photographic Life of Bill Jay was first screened in 2018 www.donotbendfilm.com. Welcome to Episode #15 of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast! This week, I welcome Bonolo Phaladze onto the show. She is a yoga studio owner and yoga teacher from Botswana. The way that Bonolo describes yoga, as a fairy godmother was such a surprise! But a delight to hear and to listen to her share her thoughts on yoga in Botswana and how yoga makes her feel. As a yoga studio owner of one of the few yoga studios in Botswana, Bonolo describes what it was like for her to find yoga herself, and her journey to find a yoga teacher— it was harder than she expected! Get ready for a fun conversation filled with laughter and creative analogies and metaphors! Yoga in Botswana, here we come! Tell me more about Bonolo Phaladze… Bonolo Phaladze is the founder and lead teacher at Yownn Yoga, a yoga studio based in Gaborone, Botswana. The studio offers yoga retreats in Southern Africa, and yoga classes both in person and online. Bonolo is a Registered Yoga Teacher, RYT200 with Yoga Alliance, she specializes in yoga for beginners primarily because the yoga scene in Botswana is relatively new, and there is a lot of work to be done to introduce more people to yoga. Bonolo's first encounter with yoga was not enthusiastic, it was a doctor's recommendation. In 2013 due to a high risk pregnancy she had no choice but to accede to her doctor's demands to abandon her regular high intensity train for something low impact and gentle like yoga. She was skeptical of yoga, maybe even judgmental, she had never once considered yoga a fitness activity. The first yoga session sparked a curiosity and respect in her that propelled her to keep returning to the mat. What to expect in the Yoga In Botswana episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast Bonolo kicks off the conversation by revealing how she first came to yoga, as her bio indicates, it wasn't enthusiastically. She first saw people at the gym just lying around on their yoga mats (apparently!) and she judged yoga as something too boring and easy. Now, it is her passion to teach new students what yoga is and what yoga can be. As yoga in Botswana is still not mainstream, the majority of her students are new to the practice. She loves walking alongside her students on their journey of yoga and showing them that it is more than just handstands and headstands. The emotional and mental presence involved in yoga is where the magic lies. While yoga in Botswana may be relatively “unpopular” as its not mainstream yet, Bonolo describes Botswana as an oasis for those seeking peace, and as she jokes “a place to sleep.” Curious about yoga in Botswana?
