Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

Recorded under the starry expanse of the Okavango Delta at Gomoti Plains Lodge in Botswana, this audio captures a rare and mesmerizing moment of cultural and natural heritage. Gathered around a crackling fire, the lodge's staff performs traditional songs for their guests passed down through generations of Bushmen and Okavango communities.  Their voices rise and fall in harmony, interwoven with the ambient sounds of firewood crackling and the symphony of the delta's nocturnal wildlife. I feel that this audio is a living tapestry of human and natural connection—a heartfelt tribute to the Okavango's unique cultural and sonic heritage.  UNESCO listing: Okavango Delta Recorded by Christina Antoniadou. ——————— This sound is part of the Sonic Heritage project, exploring the sounds of the world's most famous sights.

Then Austin Brown and I broke out the big-bore dangerous game rifles to hunt cape buffalo. Episode 227(2 Mar 2023) : Anthony Turton was exposed to the Kalahari as a small boy, where he observed the flow of water from the Okavango into a desert. He later served as a soldier fighting a war in the upper Okavango basin. He then became a peacemaker and scientist, writing about the Okavango. He holds a professorship in environmental management at the University of Free State and served as a Deputy Governor of the World Water Council, but his core skills are about water as a national security risk. Today he works with scientists, engineers and mathematicians, developing AI and ML systems for complex industrial fluids.

This week on the Tub Talks podcast, we take to the baths with Mia Maestro, who hosts many of the tea ceremonies held over the years at Secular Sabbath in between her full-time acting career. While she has always been a lover of tea, her journey really started over a decade ago when she was surprised to find a deeper practice in the art of tea meditation. This philosophy of slowing down to regain focus, or set a new tone in one's body, has trickled into many facets of her life. Especially in both her career as an actress and her intense work in activism.Mia shares what it was like growing up in Argentina during an age of terrorism, where she lived through an inverse world to the one she has created for herself today. Acting has always been a part of her life, launching her big screen career as a teenager in Tango. Even as a  little girl, acting was a means to play, and take on new personas. As an adult, she's learned to develop empathy, process emotions, and open a space for healing through acting. Bringing tea ceremony her ritual has opened a portal to explore deeper connections to her childhood self.Mia acts in mainstream and arthouse films, serves tea to prisoners with life sentences in jail, and goes deep into the bush in Africa to shine a light in the shadows of our world. At the heart of it all, Mia consistently uses tea as a tool to connect people, reset focus within, and create an ephemeral space for deep states of inspiration. But, not all tea is the same which Mia explains, and it carries with it an energy force able to brighten your perception and awaken your mind, depending on the leaf. The energetics that comes with tea practice shape how she lives in ‘flow state.'Full of knowledge and tokens of wisdom, Mia takes us on a contemplative conversation going beyond tea as a means of consumption, exploring how she brings her practice to work. So get the kettle hot and share a cup with us, as we explore Mia's world of setting intention and finding the purest form of self-expression in everyday life.

This around-the-campfire episode details three proper backcountry hunts for big Kudu bulls, and two nail-biting hunts in Namibia's historic Caprivi region along the Okavango River for massive, ancient Cape buffalo bulls.  Adam Weatherby, Rob Gearing, Austin Brown, host Joseph von Benedikt, and PH Jacques Strauss dig deep into what worked, what didn't, and how to re-group and sort out a problem when it occurs. And of course we tell the stories of each of the tremendous animals taken, from the butt-puckering stalks on buffalo to the challenge of glassing and getting on a mountain-country Kudu bull.  African conservation success stories and meat-providing processes are part and parcel of the discussion, and in truth provide some of the most passionate elements. Eating the "Poop Chute" and Buffalo balls as a pre-dinner delicacy come into play, too.  And of course, there's plenty of rifle, optic, cartridge, and bullet performance discussion, too.  ENJOY!  FRIENDS, PLEASE SUPPORT THE PODCAST!  Join the Backcountry Hunting Podcast tribe and get access to all our bonus material on www.patreon.com/backcountry VISIT OUR SPONSORS HERE:  www.browning.com www.leupold.com www.silencercentral.com www.timneytriggers.com https://www.portersfirearms.com/ www.siembidacustomknives.com https://javelinbipod.com

Addressing that in a less romantic fashion, with the honest truth around trials an errors, about how humans and animals do need areas to work and roam.”SELECTED LINKS FROM THE EPISODE fourhornproductions.co.uk Manx Shearwater Bird Facts | Puffinus Puffinus – The RSPB About us – Tsavo Trust Olly Pemberton | LinkedIn Exodus Insights Blog Page 1 | Inspire Your Next Adventure Olly Pemberton (@olly_pemberton) • Instagram photos and videos OTHER RELATED LINKS NGUMU – THE WOMEN OF KILIMANJARO – YouTube Carried Away: Inca Trail Porter Project – YouTube Restoring Italy's Wild Heart – YouTube

Welcome to episode number 4 of GUIDE STORIES. This episode we're going to explore an area of Botswana that is a little less known to many visitors to this country. Amongst thousands and thousands of square km's of flat Kalahari desert you will find two Unesco World Heritage sites. The iconic Okavango Delta and the Tsodilo Hills. We spent the day with a local guide by the name of Lopang Mojanga. His family were descendants of the river bushman who settled in the area thousands of years ago travelling down the nearby Kavango river which leads into the Okavango. Other than being the pinnacle point of Botswana towering over 400meters above the Kalahari desert, Tsodilo Hills are an incredibly significant cultural site. Home to some of the highest concentrations of ancient rock art in the world. In this episode we'll document our trip hiking up to the top of the highest peak and exploring the area with this remarkable guide, Lopang – we hope you enjoy. To see the video content from this amazing trip please head to our YouTube channel. We stayed at Nxamaseri Island Lodge which is the closest lodge to the Tsodilo Hills located on a beautiful stretch of the Okavango panhandle.
