It takes a huge amount of compute power to perform AI. In the past, those calculations occurred in the Cloud, where the cluster of processors would reside. The push today is to move AI out to the Edge. But can we handle the processing that’s required for AI out on the Edge? That’s the question I posed to Ed Kuzemchak, the Chief Technology Officer at Software Design Solutions, an Applied Visions company, in this week’s Embedded Executives podcast.

In this episode, we talk with Ed Kuzemchak from Software Design Solutions. Ed digs into the ways companies can use the Internet of Things (IoT) to increase efficiency. He shares advice on how to identify areas of opportunity to implement IoT and strategies to make the most of an IoT investment. “I think the most important part for a company is to look at systems they have today and say “what part of these systems that we have, can we make more efficient or more cost effective or higher performing if we had better information?’ Cause that's really all that IOT is all about. It's about gaining data where you didn't used to have data or you couldn't get good or up-to-date data. You know, if you had to wait until the reports came back from the field, from your field sales tech or your field service techs on machine failures, you might have a two week lag on machine failures. And the data that you're looking at is always two weeks old. Well, what if it was only five seconds old?”Connect with Ed Kuzemchak on LinkedIn.

As an embedded software thought leader, I invited Ed back onto this tech podcast to shares his experience around the challenges and pitfalls of designing intelligence into objects. As an embedded software thought leader, Ed Kuzemchak is well-versed in the challenges and pitfalls of designing intelligence into objects. His experience across multiple industries has afforded him unique insights that he can share with companies looking to create, update, or improve their own IoT technologies. While CES focuses on the shiny new tech solutions and buzzwords, I wanted to look under the hood of these emerging technologies. Ed explores the real challenges and opportunities that surround the internet of things (IoT) In today's conversation, we talk about the convergence of low-cost networking (NBIoT/Cat-M1) and how power-efficient highly capable edge nodes are changing the IoT landscape. We also explore the unique challenges of IoT in industrial control settings (harsh environments, legacy equipment, IT vs. OT, security). As we look beyond the smoke and mirrors of the tech hype, we look beyond the impacts of 5G and talk about the role of Fog computing in a world where edge nodes are becoming more and more capable. We also dare to ask, do you need Machine Learning for your IoT application? Or is good old fashioned heuristics what you really need?
