They cover the Size Principle, the importance of continuous muscular loading, and how to structure your workout to reach the fibers that actually drive growth and performance. Dr. Fisher explains the All-or-Nothing theory and why your muscles are either fully "on" or fully "off." He breaks down how your body only recruits the exact fibers needed for the task in front of you. Knowing this helps you understand why you need higher effort to see real strength gains. Dr. Fisher explains that Type 1 fibers are cheap to use, so your body loves using them first. They handle endurance but don't give you the strength you want. He shows how pushing harder in the gym is what finally taps into Type 2 fibers. Learn why Type 2 fibers are powerful but expensive for your body to use. They fatigue quickly, so your system avoids them unless you give a strong stimulus. But once you activate them, that's when real growth and strength improvements happen. Dr. Fisher explains how your nervous system recruits muscle fibers from smallest to largest. It's your body's way of protecting energy while still meeting the force demands of your workout. Amy highlights how the body is constantly trying to conserve energy. That means it avoids using high-cost muscle fibers unless absolutely necessary. Dr. Fisher shares why multiple-set training often fails to push you to true effort. When you simply count reps, you usually stop far short of full muscle recruitment. So, you're leaving huge results on the table without even realizing it. Amy covers why resting between sets resets the whole muscle recruitment process. Once your Type 1 fibers recover, your body goes right back to using them first. And that makes it harder for you to reach those high-impact Type 2 fibers that drive strength. Amy highlights that if full muscle fiber recruitment is the goal, you don't want to stop and restart the process over and over. Every pause delays that final layer of activation. And that delay means slower strength gains and less efficient workouts. Dr. Fisher covers why eccentric loading is such a game-changer in strength training. We're naturally stronger on the lowering phase, but most equipment doesn't challenge us there. When you finally load that phase properly, you maintain deeper fiber recruitment for longer. Dr. Fisher shares how exerbotics devices keep you working harder during the eccentric phase instead of giving you a break. Amy and Dr. Fisher cover the biggest benefit of working with a personal trainer. With expert guidance and efficient workouts, you can achieve better results more quickly than you might on your own. New tax laws are on the horizon—and they could significantly influence the way you give. The recently passed One Big, Beautiful Bill Act (often shortened to the OBBBA) introduces several changes that affect charitable givers today and in the years to come. To help unpack these shifts, we sat down with Bruce McKee, attorney and Senior Vice President of Complex Gifts at the National Christian Foundation (NCF).What the OBBBA Actually DoesDespite its cheerful name, the OBBBA carries serious implications for donors. Bruce explains that the bill makes permanent many provisions that were originally scheduled to expire at the end of 2025 under the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Key extensions include:Higher standard deductionsHigher estate tax exclusionsNew deduction floors for charitable giftsA new limit on itemized deductionsExtended business deductionsUpdated rules for university endowment taxesThese changes will affect different givers differently, but nearly everyone will feel the impact of the new standard deduction.The Standard Deduction Gets Bigger—AgainThis update alone affects roughly 90% of taxpayers.The OBBBA permanently extends the increased standard deduction and even boosts it for the 2025 tax year:Individuals: $15,750Married couples filing jointly: $31,500Because the standard deduction is now higher, fewer people will itemize. And when giving is lumped under the standard deduction, charitable gifts are no longer deductible.But there's a powerful workaround.If you want to maximize your tax benefits while maintaining your giving rhythms, “bunching” can help. Bunching means:Grouping several years' worth of charitable gifts into a single tax yearItemizing in that year, instead of taking the standard deductionUsing a donor-advised fund (DAF)—such as an NCF Giving Fund—to distribute gifts gradually over future yearsA giving fund works like a charitable checking account—a powerful tool for strategic, tax-efficient generosity. Bunching is especially impactful when paired with gifts of appreciated assets.New Charitable Deduction Floors Coming in 2026Beginning in 2026, charitable deductions will include a “floor”—a small portion of giving that won't be deductible at all.For IndividualsOnly the amount of charitable giving above 0.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) will be deductible. Here's an example:AGI = $200,0000.5% floor = $1,000Whether you give $20,000 or $40,000, the first $1,000 is not deductible.For CorporationsA similar rule applies, but the floor is 1% of taxable income.Why This MattersThis floor means that givers with large AGIs—especially in high-income years—should consider giving earlier, before 2026 arrives. Strategic timing will matter more than ever.Even high-capacity donors who itemize may benefit from bunching in alternating years.New Limits on Itemized DeductionsThe OBBBA also introduces a “haircut” affecting all itemized deductions—not just charitable ones.Because the highest tax bracket (37%) is now permanent, itemized deductions typically reduce income taxed at that rate. But beginning in 2026:Deductions in the highest bracket will be valued at 35 cents per dollar, not 37.It's a relatively small shift, but it slightly increases tax liability and adds another layer of planning complexity. Once again, Bruce recommends intentionally reviewing giving strategies before the 2025 year closes.Estate and Gift Tax Exclusions: Higher and More StableThe OBBBA also stabilizes estate planning by raising the estate and gift tax exemption to:$15 million per individual$30 million for married couplesThese thresholds—once set to sunset back to near half—are now permanent (as permanent as tax law can be). This gives families greater clarity as they plan inheritances and consider charitable tools like trusts or family foundations.When people settle their estate planning, it often helps them focus their hearts on where God is calling them to give—what Ron Blue usually describes as “giving while you're living so you're knowing where it's going.”Good News for Non-Itemizers: The Above-the-Line Charitable Deduction ReturnsBeginning soon, non-itemizers will be able to deduct modest charitable amounts:$1,000 for individuals$2,000 for married couples filing jointlyThis applies to cash gifts made to churches and public charities. It's a welcome incentive for households that rely on the standard deduction.Navigating Change with WisdomThe tax landscape may shift, but God's call to generosity never does. So what else is there that you know, people should be paying attention to? And Amazon specifically for now that, you know, there could be a lot of, you know, marginally going out the business.Josh Gibson 00:01:15 Yeah. I mean, it's important to to track your weights and your gyms and your categories of what products you're selling in because there's some products. Say you're selling a printer. A printer should be in an 8% category, but sometimes they'll slide into a 15% category. So you're losing that that amount of money. You don't see it unless you're tracking tracking it. Or they could dim it out wrong. Say something. They as they went through their Cuba scan, it dimmed out incorrectly. So being able to go in and update and fix those dimensions and then do do file backs on those. also trying to find better, more efficient ways to do inbound shipments. and so there's, there's tools out there that we use that can take like right now we're running a full truckload, for $400, inbound FBA, where that same truckload going, another the route could be 3 to $4000. So it's the more time you do this. And the nice thing about our team is we can sit in a bullpen and go, okay, what are you guys learning? What'd you find out? and trying to take our collective knowledge, plus being able to go to, like, this, scale and sell summit and meet other people that know more things and aggregate this information to become more valuable.Josh Gibson 00:02:19 which, to your point is, if you're an owner operator trying to do this yourself, it becomes complicated because you don't have the resources and the ability to to learn all these things. Yeah. But to your point, it's it's the weight in gems. It is the categories. It is inbound shipments. I'm blanking on a few others, but it's really managing that protection of your bottom line. that's important. And it's also like specifically with inbound shipments is the annoying part is you can get that FBI ID cleared, they can say fully received. And we've seen with some clients ten, 12 months later, they say, actually we're five short. And if you're not going back and reordering those, even though you thought you did a good job auditing it. John Campbell, Professor of Economics at Harvard University and co-author of Fixed, joined the Strategy Skills Podcast to explain why the financial system often works against ordinary investors and how to make better personal-finance decisions. After decades studying markets and investor behavior, Campbell saw a pattern: even educated, high-income earners routinely make avoidable mistakes in housing, saving, and investing. "Once I started looking at how people actually behave, I became more and more aware of how pervasive mistakes are, people are just leaving money on the table." Those mistakes compound over time, widening inequality. "It's what economists call a cross-subsidy, from the poor to the rich. My co-author Tarun and I feel that this is really outrageous and we should be concerned about it." Five Key Insights 1. Financial Mistakes Compound Inequality Campbell's research shows that even when borrowers start on equal terms, inaction and misunderstanding drive divergence. "Black borrowers are paying maybe as much as half a percentage point more on average than white borrowers… and that's just because they haven't refinanced." Behavioral gaps like failing to refinance when rates fall transfer wealth upward. 2. Housing Choices Are Often Poorly Understood Many treat property as guaranteed wealth rather than a productive asset. "It's a huge mistake to buy a bigger house than you need, or even more so to buy a place and then let it sit empty… you're effectively buying an asset and then throwing away the dividend on that asset." Unused or oversized housing drains capital that could compound elsewhere. 3. Early-Career Risk-Taking Is Underrated "Most people, when they're young, have a very large hidden asset, their earning power. For most people, that earning power is far safer than the stock market." Because human capital is relatively stable, young investors can afford higher equity exposure and should taper risk only as retirement approaches. 4. Target-Date Funds Don't Go Far Enough "Most target date funds are not aggressive enough early in life, and they taper down the risk taking too gradually." Campbell argues these default products should adjust risk more sharply and reflect each investor's actual wealth trajectory. 5. Complexity Creates Confusion and Inequality "This profusion of accounts leads to confusion. People throw up their hands. And the access to these accounts is unequal." The U.S. system's overlapping account types favor large employers and the financially literate, leaving others behind. Actions You Can Take Now 1. Maximize any employer match immediately. "Certainly any kind of employer match, you want to maximize that right away." 2. Save aggressively through tax-favored accounts. "You should be saving aggressively and you should be maximizing your use of tax-favored accounts." 3. Manage your mortgage strategically. "Managing your mortgage is also a very important thing for people in the middle class and upper middle class." 4. Consider adjustable-rate mortgages as efficient leverage if you can manage the risk. "The cheapest way to lever that portfolio and be involved in risky markets actually in many cases is to use an adjustable-rate mortgage… a cheap way to take leverage." 5. Use home equity as flexible credit. "Home equity is a valuable source of credit." 6. In retirement, spend your assets, don't hoard them. "Many people hang on to their financial assets too long and are too reluctant to tap home equity. The right way to manage retirement is a mix of annuities and reverse-mortgage borrowing… so that you can enjoy it." 7. Avoid oversized or idle property. "If you buy an asset and then throw away the dividend, you should not expect it to deliver a high return." 8. Take more financial risk when young; scale back later. Treat your earning power as your built-in "safe asset." 9. Build an emergency fund before investing. "It should be a priority to have an emergency fund in a safe and liquid form so that you stay out of high-cost debt." 10. Support simpler, fairer financial design. "We think the financial system is very important for the market economy and the unpopularity of finance is really bad. We're trying to save the financial industry for itself." Dr. Robin "Buz" Kloot of the University of South Carolina's Arnold School of Public Health and Soil Health Labs shares his perspective on connections with soil health and public health with Eric, Mary, and Jeff in this episode. Buz reflects on his own research but also points out what he has heard from farmers and ranchers he has worked with through the years. Building on the idea that eating is an agricultural act and food can be medicine, Buz would like health professionals, agronomists, soil scientists, farmers, and ranchers to collaborate more on soil and public health research and education.In addition to your own research and study of soil and human health, Buz recommends reading Fred Provenza's book Nourishment: What Animals Can Teach Us about Rediscovering Our Nutritional Wisdom. SOL LUCKMANIt's hardly surprising that one of the most iconic and bestselling musician biographies of all time, and the first (of a veritable “Spanish Caravan”) written about the Doors front man Jim Morrison, was titled NO ONE HERE GETS OUT ALIVE.The lyric is a line from “Five to One,” a perennial fan favorite penned by Morrison but credited officially to the Doors—and it has stuck in my mind (as it has in countless others over more than half a century since its 1968 release) like a splinter, to reference the movie THE MATRIX that also figures prominently in this book.When I was living in Paris in the early 1990s, I became obsessed with Morrison, and not just his music but his often macabre poetry as well. This was shortly after the release of Oliver Stone's uber provocative rock biopic that put to shame all other rock biopics, THE DOORS.As a birthday present, my girlfriend gave me a bilingual copy of THE LORDS & THE NEW CREATURES, Morrison's first volume of poetry replete with dark meditations on sex, celebrity, drugs, and (of course) death.While riding the Metro, sitting on the steps of Montmartre and sipping espresso at cafés, I found myself reading it alternately in English and the French translation to capture more and more nuances of Morrison's cryptic, multilayered thought.Jim had died in Paris and was buried in the city's famously lovely necropolis, Père Lachaise Cemetery. His grave—which once featured a stone bust with his big hippy hair made by a Croatian sculptor and stolen in 1988—was, and still is, a literal shrine to many tourists, fans and hipster locals making rock ‘n' roll pilgrimages from near and far.Practically as controversial in death as in life, ever since his untimely demise in 1971 that rocked the rock world, Morrison has lingered in a sort of public half-life.Simultaneously, he has been an inspiration for counterculture and music lovers; a nuisance for Parisians fed up with the incessant drinking, smoking and carousing that have turned his grave into an eternal party; and a would-be prodigal son to his home country, where a Florida politician bizarrely (and unsuccessfully) sought to have Jim's final resting place relocated to his birthplace, the Space Coast!My girlfriend—call her Kate—and I regularly visited Morrison's final resting place, and often partook in the festivities, which I must admit were exemplary displays of Dionysian behavior … if inevitably a regretted hangover source.Filled with more cemeteries, church crypts and bone-lined Catacombs than you could shake a Gauloise at, Paris invited an ongoing meditation on the afterlife. Like HARRY POTTER's Myrtle without the moaning, I regularly found myself contemplating the seeming inevitability of death.And then one overcast Parisian winter afternoon half a decade later, when I was back in town visiting a new girlfriend, while standing in front of Morrison's grave strewn with flowers and cigarette butts yet again as if no time had elapsed and nothing had changed, the doors of my perception (hat tip to William Blake and Aldous Huxley) suddenly burst wide open when a still small voice inside me asked this simply disarming question:“Does no one here get out alive?”Copyright © Sol Luckman.
