Send us a text In this episode, Marty gives Clif the movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to watch and Clif gives Marty the movie Wind River to watch. This week on Talking Pondo, Clif Campbell and Marty Ketola celebrate the show's two-year anniversary with a wildly mismatched double feature.First up is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990), the surprise hit comic book movie that also happens to be the first film Clif and Marty ever reviewed together. They revisit its surprisingly dark tone, Jim Henson creature work, early appearances by future stars, and why this PG-rated movie still feels more adult than anyone remembers. Then things turn sharply with Wind River (2017), the haunting conclusion to Taylor Sheridan's unofficial frontier trilogy. The conversation digs into its themes of violence, justice, isolation, and why this powerful trilogy feels frustratingly unfinished.Along the way: listener mail, Pondo origin stories, movie nostalgia, and reflections on how 1990 impacted film. #TalkingPondo #TMNT1990 #WindRiver #MoviePodcast #FilmDiscussion #ComicBookMovies #90sMovies #TaylorSheridan Support the showFind our films here: The Love Song of William H Shaw Revenge of Zoe Writing Fren-ZeeMaking Pondo on FacebookX (formerly Twitter):@MakingPondoInstagramMaking Pondo on Letterboxd:Season One Season Two Season Three Season Four Theme Song "The Rain" by Russ PacePhotos by Geoffrey Notkin

In this episode of The InEVitable by MotorTrend, hosts Jonny Lieberman and Ed Loh sit down with Marques McCammon, President of Karma Automotive, to talk about the company's reboot, its American-made ultra-luxury vision, and why the future isn't fully electric—it's EREV. Marques traces his incredible career from creating the Dodge Neon SRT-4 to pivotal roles at ASC, Saleen, Aptera, Wind River, Ricardo, and ultimately Karma. He reveals what he found when he arrived at Karma, why he shut everything down to rebuild quality and identity, and how Karma's new vehicles—including the upcoming Sera, Amaris, Isvara, and the four-motor Kaveya supercar—aim to blend emotional design, handcrafted luxury, and range-extended electric performance. Karma's goal? To become America's counterpart to Aston, McLaren, and Ferrari, built in Southern California with an experience-centered philosophy. Featuring deep cut industry stories—from SRT beginnings to Aptera's shutdown to why EREV is primed for a comeback—this is one of the most wide-ranging and insightful conversations we've had.
Celine-Marie Pascale, professor emerita of sociology at American University, discusses her book Living on the Edge (2021), wherein she details her research into the struggling communities across the United States—from Appalachia to the Standing Rock and Wind River reservations to Oakland, California—who face the hardships of stagnant wages and rising costs of living. Analysing the experiences of people emanating from communities that deal with systemic, entrenched levels of poverty, Pascale uncovers the “social organisation of power relations that keep people submerged in poverty, that actually make poverty profitable,” calls out the “American dream” as much more of a myth than a reality, similar to the adjacent myth of “class mobility.” Considering how “capitalism depends upon a large, poorly paid workforce,” Pascale observes that in order to maintain the workforce without rebellion, these myths are turned against the workers and the poor, essentially telling workers that if they are struggling to put food on the table or take care of their families, that the fault lies with the worker and not with the system, not with capitalism. Historicising the lack of class consciousness in the United States, she notes how workers are cannibalised by capitalism while advanced capitalism, Pascale contends, “cannibalises itself.” Pascale critiques the federal measure of poverty, narrating how such standardisation for the cost of living is “untethered from reality” since it makes no distinction for food or rent costs in areas where food is imported (eg, Alaska and Hawaii) or where rent is extremely high (eg, San Francisco and New York). Covering her work on the violence against Native American women, Pascale assesses the high rates of violence and sex trafficking networks which fuel “man camps”—temporary housing facilities for a large workforce, typically in isolated areas where men are recruited to work on resource extraction or construction projects (eg, oil, gas or mining)—that have a documented correlation with increased rates of sexual assault, violence, and sex trafficking. Love the show? Have any thoughts? Click here to let us know!In the vast, windswept wilds of Wyoming, stories echo across time—some whispered in ancient legend, others carried in the cold silence of unsolved crimes. Long before these modern tragedies, the Indigenous Shoshone people spoke of the Nimerigar, a race of tiny, fierce warrior people said to dwell in the mountains and caves of the region. Lauren explores the possibility that ancient folklore and modern fear intersect in the same haunted landscape. But that's not the only mystery buried in the Basin. Kenzie dives into the chilling mystery of the Great Basin Murders, a string of unsolved homicides that have haunted law enforcement for decades. Women found along remote stretches of highway, their identities unknown, their lives forgotten—until now. We are doing something new and special for this case and covering it across multiple episodes because it spans multiple states! Join us as we explore what links—if any—exist between myth and mystery, and uncover the unsettling stories that make Wyoming's Great Basin a place where history never stays buried.--Follow us on Social Media and find out how to support A Scary State by clicking on our Link Tree: https://instabio.cc/4050223uxWQAl--Have a scary tale or listener story of your own?
