It is almost like the Before Time this week, with three new movies, all of them interesting, and two from major filmmakers. Exciting! First, the big one: Spike Lee's Netflix film "Da 5 Bloods." Then Judd Apatow tries to figure out Pete Davidson in "The King of Staten Island." And then, a documentary about "Showgirls" that is a LOT better than "Showgirls:" It's "You Don't Nomi." Timestamps (approximate): 15:30 "Da 5 Bloods" 45:22 "The King of Staten Island" 1:11:04 "You Don't Nomi" Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend Mary, both of which are wonderful, for the music. We hope you enjoy. Let us know what you think @griersonleitch on Twitter, or griersonleitch@gmail.com. As always, give us a review on iTunes with the name of a movie you'd like us to review, and we'll discuss it on a later podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Tania talks about turning inward and listening to one's inner voice when there are so many external forces trying to tell us what to think, say and feel. She had a doozy of a cab ride from hell with a self-proclaimed probably racist "historian" and she saw the controversial Slave Play by Jeremy O. Harris. Both experiences pushed her to think about her identity, how she presents as an antiracist and how important it is to follow you true north. Plus some thoughts on a great episode of Spike Lee's Netflix series "She's Gotta Have it" called #IAMYourMirror. Like us on FB @taniastake on Instagram Also on iTunes and Stitcher

On today's episode I talk to actress DeWanda Wise. Originally from Maryland, DeWanda graduated from the Tisch School at NYU in 2006, and began her professional acting career soon after with small roles on shows like Law and Order: SVU and The Good Wife. This led to larger parts on Underground and Shots Fired, and in 2017, she was the lead in Spike Lee's Netflix remake of his seminal film She's Gotta Have It. Currently, she's been cast opposite Brie Larson in the Captain Marvel film in an unspecified role. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.
