This episode we welcome actress and producer Rebekah Kennedy to talk Traumatika Rebekah Kennedy began acting on the stage. Rebekah spent all of her time doing theatre and it wasn't until later that she truly discovered the screen. Soon came an amazing opportunity when Rebekah booked the lead role Hanna in the feature, "House Hunting" with Marc Singer and Art LaFleur and then went on to play Caroline Boutine in the feature, "Creature," starring Mehcad Brooks and Serinda Swan. Then came another wonderful opportunity when she booked a supporting role in the feature, "Season of the Witch" with Nicolas Cage. Rebekah made her television debut on the TNT show, "Memphis Beat." She also had a guest star role in the long running TV show "Criminal Minds" on CBS, the lead guest star Esther Labott in The Book of Esther on "Law & Order SVU" on NBC, and most recently as the crazy drug addict Melly Wyatt in "Station 19" on ABC. Rebekah first hit the big screen when she played the young Peasant Turk Girl in "Season of the Witch" with Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman, which landed in theaters January 2011, "Creature" which opened in September 2011, and then as one of the leads in the horror film "Bastard" with After Dark Films and Fox Home Entertainment which opened in October 2015. "A Dark Foe" with Graham Greene and Selma Blair opened in select theaters July 2021 and most recently "The Unseen" which played in select theaters June 30th 2023 with RJ Mitte. Rebekah can also be seen in Netflix's "To The Bone" starring Lily Collins and Keanu Reeves. "Let Me Make You A Martyr" with Mark Boone Junior, "Street Level" with Sons of Anarchy's David Labrava and Mark Boone Junior, and "Limbo" with James Purefoy. She most recently can be seen starring as the mute girl Jojo in the Amazon prime movie "Los Angeles" and as the starring witch Masha in "Two Witches" that is taking the horror world by storm. She also most recently wrapped "The Veil" with Sean O'Bryan that premiered at the Austin Film Festival and "Crust" with Sean Whalen, Daniel Roebuck, and Alan Ruck that will be releasing this Fall. Originally aired as episode 120 on December 9, 2020. Nik Walker is an artist, educator, and activist who made his Broadway debut in Motown The Musical. He spent 3 years with the Broadway and touring companies of Hamilton, adding both Aaron Burr and George Washington to his resume. Other stage credits include Peter and the Starcatcher (off-Broadway), and regional productions at La Jolla Playhouse, The Old Globe and The Denver Center, to name a few. He can also be seen on TV in Law & Order: SVU. Nik is a self-proclaimed cinefile and theme park nerd, and co-hosts his own movie analysis podcast called Little Justice The Podcast. He also co-hosts a video series on Broadwayworld.com called The Chaos Twins. Nik currently leads the Broadway cast of Ain't Too Proud playing Otis Williams, and is an adjunct professor at his alma mater, New York University. Nik shares that his mother worked a job as a news anchor when he was growing up, so she wasn't really home a lot. So it was movies that played babysitter and kept his imagination going. But movies and stories played an even bigger and more important role in focusing him as a child after he was diagnosed with ADHD, eventually leading to his early involvement in theater. And later, a BFA in Theater from NYU. During our conversation, Nik speaks candidly about coming to Broadway with very little dance background, sharing that Motown was his first brush with dancing professionally and getting paid for it. He shares memories of intense dance training for Ain't Too Proud while still on tour with Hamilton - 5 hours of dance a day, and a performance of Hamilton in the evening - and the sense of pride he gained as a result of “being comfortable with letting go of your comfort zone”. Nik also opens up about the journey he has taken during the COVID pandemic which brought him back to NYU, this time as a professor. And while he acknowledges performing in Ain't Too Proud and teaching at the same time will be a lot of work, he not only feels rewarded by his new job, but knows he is contributing to the education and growth of the next generation of theater artists. Kimberly Belflower is a playwright and educator originally from a small town in Appalachian Georgia. This is her Broadway debut, and she's probably crying about it right now. That's what all good writers do: use language to get to the heart of something. He would use malapropisms to make up words, and Milch loved playing with that. As someone who played the love interest of such a unique character as Andy Sipowicz, I found it fascinating.Through Sylvia and David Milch's understanding, his wife humanized him. Sipowicz was portrayed as an addict, a very flawed human who had many addictions. David Milch is now suffering from Alzheimer's, so we won't get his words again. However, the words that he has to offer are timeless because he studied Robert Penn Warren and had many mentors throughout his vast literary education. That is key. I love speaking Noël Coward's words. As a bon vivant, he wrote musically, to charm us and amuse us. I also think of the female playwrights who delight me now, whether it's Caryl Churchill. She has that singular mind and plays with gender so well, challenging gender norms. Seeing ‘Cloud Nine' when I was in college blew my mind open because men were playing women and women were playing men. Of course, Shakespeare was doing it too, but her work felt more intimate; it was in a small theater. That's another thing I encourage actors and audiences to do: go see things in small theaters. There is a book called Intent to Live that distills down Uta Hagen, Stella Adler, Bobby Lewis, and Stanislavski. The great teachers at the Group Theatre believed that the method needed to be altered to be constructive rather than destructive to artists.David Milch's mind is so singular because he uses language in a way that defines character. That's what all good writers do: use language to get to the heart of something. He would use malapropisms to make up words, and Milch loved playing with that. As someone who played the love interest of such a unique character as Andy Sipowicz, I found it fascinating.Through Sylvia and David Milch's understanding, his wife humanized him. Sipowicz was portrayed as an addict, a very flawed human who had many addictions. David Milch is now suffering from Alzheimer's, so we won't get his words again. However, the words that he has to offer are timeless because he studied Robert Penn Warren and had many mentors throughout his vast literary education. That is key. I love speaking Noël Coward's words. As a bon vivant, he wrote musically, to charm us and amuse us. So going and reading Noël Coward is important for actors to learn those cadences and the musicality of a certain era. Of course, Shakespeare comes to mind. I also think of the female playwrights who delight me now, whether it's Caryl Churchill. She has that singular mind and plays with gender so well, challenging gender norms. Seeing ‘Cloud Nine' when I was in college blew my mind open because men were playing women and women were playing men. Of course, Shakespeare was doing it too, but her work felt more intimate; it was in a small theater. That's another thing I encourage actors and audiences to do: go see things in small theaters. See it up close because that will excite you and help you learn the craft.”Sharon Lawrence is an acclaimed actress best known for her Emmy-nominated, SAG Award-winning role as ADA Sylvia Costas on NYPD Blue. Julie Tucker is a highly acclaimed casting director with a remarkable career spanning over two decades. Recognized for her outstanding contributions to the industry, she boasts an impressive tally of nine Emmy nominations and two Emmy Awards. Additionally, Julie has been honored with five Artois awards from her peers for her excellence in casting. Her journey began in the theater at The Public, and her introduction to Television started with the casting of the first three seasons of Law and Order: SVU, after which she founded her own casting company. Julie's current projects include Queen Latifah's The Equalizer, the upcoming Limited Series for Netflix “The Beast in Me,” starring Claire Danes, Mathew Rhys and Brittany Snow and the hits series "Doc," for Fox. Her extensive portfolio includes a diverse range of projects with her former partner Ross Meyerson, such as The Oscar nominated short “Red White & Blue, "The Expanse," "The Americans." “The Affair,” "Nurse Jackie," “Fallout,” the Jennifer Lopez feature film, "Marry Me." Notable past projects include: "Damages" (Emmy and Artios Award), "Six Feet Under" (Emmy and Artios Award for NY Casting), "Rescue Me" (Artios Award), and “Homeland” (Artios Award). She has cast 100's of hours of television, several dozen pilots and a few movies.
