As 2026 begins, Andrew and Jay take a look at one of the most dangerous traps for founders and small shop owners: becoming the hero who always steps in to save the day.Andrew introduces a personal document he titled “Andrew Is Fired,” a deliberate decision to remove himself from roles that feel productive but quietly limit growth. The conversation explores why constantly “going above and beyond” can actually be a form of selfishness, how undocumented processes turn leaders into bottlenecks, why clarity around ownership matters more than raw effort, and more.

Hank Williams defined the genre we now call country with a guitar in one hand and a bottle of booze in the other. In between stints in the local drunk tank, he cultivated a knack for blue-collar blues that would spread far beyond the backwoods South Hank called home. His self-proclaimed “hillbilly music” logged him more than 30 hit songs and membership at the Grand Ole Opry, fulfilling Hank's lifelong dream. But his frequent bouts with the bottle would ultimately strip him of that membership, sending him from the Ryman Auditorium to the sanatorium – and ultimately, an early grave. Happy New Year to all the listeners and readers! As we step into 2026, I gave my second annual Gospel Tangents 2025 Book Awards. (Click the link for 2024!) It is the perfect time to look back at the milestones, challenges, and incredible content that defined 2025. While the past year was personally difficult due to several significant health challenges, it was a prolific year for the podcast, featuring 115 episodes! https://youtube.com/live/Jy-QsGSU4bA Hits of 2025 One of the most fascinating aspects of 2025 was seeing which videos resonated most with the audience. Some of the most-watched content actually came from the archives, proving that great history is timeless. This is 4 of my top 10 list. Mark Scherer Spike: A 2023 interview with Mark Sheerer saw a massive, unexplained spike in May, gaining tens of thousands of views and becoming the most-watched video of the year. See our conversation on Emma Smith's 2nd husband Lewis Bidamon. The Mormon Cave: A 2021 episode featuring KC Kern and Greg Pavone rediscovering a cave in New York blew up in October. It turns out the surge might have been tied to the property being put up for sale. Fired from the First Presidency: The 2024 interview with Matt Harris remained a powerhouse, sitting at number three for the year. Sandra Tanner: Her discussion on Joseph Fielding Smith and the “ripped out” 1832 First Vision account was the most popular interview actually recorded in 20256. Gospel Tangents 2025 Book Awards The podcast isn’t just about interviews; it's about highlighting the best scholarship in the field. Here are the standout winners for the 2025 Book Awards: Best Book: John Turner's Rise and Fall of an American Prophet. Best Temple Book: Holiness to the Lord by Jonathan Stapley, which offers what may be the best “temple prep” explanation ever written in its first chapter. Best Social Science Book: Goodbye Religion by Ryan Cragun, which explores why people are leaving organized religion across various faiths. Best Biography: Matthew Bowman's work on Joseph Fielding Smith: A Mormon Theologian. Best First Book: Rich Hanks for To Be a Friend of Christ, a biography of his father, Marion D. Hanks. Best Mormon Feminism Work: Katie Rich and Heather Sundal for their work on Exponent II. Katie also won an award for her article on the Relief Society and Brigham Young. Looking Ahead to 2026 As we enter our 10th year of Gospel Tangents, there are big things on the horizon. There is a second podcast in the works, likely featuring a more informal YouTube Live format once or twice a month. However, growth comes with its own hurdles. We are currently about 12 months behind on transcripts1 If you are a fan of the show and want to help preserve these histories, please reach out at Gospel Tangents at gmail dot com to assist with transcribing. Your support on Patreon also remains vital to keeping this project running as we balance a busy production schedule. If you can help me with Instagram and Substack marketing, please reach out, knowing that my budget is extremely tight. Reviewing a year of history is much like excavating a cave; you never know which artifacts will suddenly catch the light and gain new value, but the effort of digging ensures that the story is never truly lost. Licensed clinical social worker Tammy Weitzman dedicated 23 years of her career to caring for cancer patients—from the moment of diagnosis through treatment, survivorship, and sometimes end of life. But her stellar track record as a source of comfort to ailing patients in their hour of need wasn't enough for her to keep her job. Tammy's story reveals how DEI ideology can infiltrate even the most sacred spaces in healthcare, ultimately costing her everything she'd worked for.Tammy describes how her workplace at Seattle's Fred Hutch Cancer Center transformed after 2017, when self-described "social justice warriors" entered her department. She was called a "white kike" by a colleague, harassed for her friendship with someone in the Trump administration, and subjected to mandatory DEI sessions that dismissed her own experiences with antisemitism. When she pushed back against an email encouraging therapists to bring political conversations into patient care, she received a three-page complaint accusing her of "white privilege"—and was terminated ten days later for "lack of ethnic sensitivity."We explore what it means when institutions prioritize ideology over their core mission, how the female-dominated helping professions have become breeding grounds for social aggression masked as compassion, and what it takes to rebuild after your career and character have been destroyed. Tammy shares how she filed a lawsuit that settled quickly, relocated across the country, and rebuilt her practice from the ground up—all while becoming a source of support for others experiencing similar persecution.A licensed clinical social worker for 25 years, Tammy Weitzman has presented her work around the world. Born and raised in Toronto, she completed her graduate degree in New York. Tammy spent most of her career caring for cancer patients and their families, particularly those undergoing treatment of hematologic malignancies such as leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and stem cell transplantation. Although gifted at her job, her career took a downturn when “woke” colleagues created a hostile working atmosphere, harassing her with antisemitic slurs. After she objected to a colleague sending a biased political article to social workers over company email, Tammy was abruptly terminated from her job in Seattle. Tammy now counsels in private practice as an LCSW in North Carolina.Tammy's counseling websiteEmail: tammyw@wefixbrains.comBooks mentioned in this episode:- Imagine Heaven by John Burke- Imagine the God of Heaven by John Burke[00:00:00] Start[00:07:22] Why Oncology: Father's Death from Cancer[00:11:57] Wisdom from a Dying Patient[00:20:41] 2017: Social Justice Warriors Arrive[00:34:28] Called a "White Kike" by Colleague[00:44:00] Friend in Trump Administration Exposed[00:54:19] Terminated for "Lack of Ethnic Sensitivity"[00:56:01] Decision to Fight Back[01:09:52] Filing Lawsuit and Rebuilding LifeROGD REPAIR Course + Community gives concerned parents instant access to over 120 lessons providing the psychological insights and communication tools you need to get through to your kid. CURTIS LEMAY TAKES COMMAND AND TESTS INCENDIARIES Colleague James M. Scott. After Hanselwas fired for a lack of results, Curtis LeMay, a pragmatic problem-solver from a hardscrabble background, took command in January 1945. LeMay realized the existing tactics were unsolvable equations and began tinkering with variables like altitude and radar. Concurrently, the US developed napalm and the M69 incendiary bomb, testing them on a mock Japanese village built in the Utah desert to ensure they could burn traditional wood-and-paper Japanesearchitecture. LeMay possessed detailed data on Tokyo's flammable density, preparing to exploit the city's architectural vulnerabilities. NUMBER 3 1945 OKINAWA

My guest today is Merry Korn, author of Fired to Inspired, a powerful teaching memoir that chronicles an extraordinary journey from professional setback to purpose-driven success. Merry's story begins with being fired—a moment many job seekers fear most—but instead of letting that moment define her, she used it as the starting point for reinvention. What followed was not a polished overnight success, but a real, unvarnished transformation. Through strategic pivots, hard-earned lessons, and persistence, Merry went on to build a social enterprise that now employs more than 1,300 people across 30 states, giving hiring priority to individuals facing the greatest barriers to work. Her journey is a roadmap for anyone who has ever felt defeated by a career setback and wondered whether their lowest moment could become their greatest opportunity.Merry's perspective is deeply rooted in resilience. Her role model is her mother, a Holocaust survivor, who taught her the meaning of perseverance and never giving up. That lesson shows up throughout Merry's work and is especially relevant for job seekers who may feel discouraged, fearful, or worn down by a prolonged search. In a time of economic uncertainty and career disruption, her story offers both hope and practical guidance for building something meaningful out of adversity.Key Themes We Explore in This EpisodeIn our conversation, Merry shares insights and tools that are immediately applicable for anyone in transition, including:Turning setbacks into setups for success and reframing career disappointments as opportunities for clarity and growthThe power of informational interviews—what they are, how to use them, and why they are one of the most effective job-search strategiesUsing available resources such as coaches, books, and LinkedIn to build momentum and expand opportunityStaying physically strong during your job search, and how physical health directly impacts emotional resilience and mental well-beingOvercoming fear and uncertainty, with the reminder that this season will endFinding purpose before accepting your next role, and why not jumping at the first offer, can lead to a more fulfilling careerCall to ActionIf you're in the middle of a job search—or know one is coming—this episode is for you. Do Business. Do Life. — The Financial Advisor Podcast — DBDL
What do you do when doing the right thing gets you fired? That's the question at the center of this conversation with Keith Leverentz. Keith started his career as a high school science teacher before being recruited into a captive financial firm. He quickly became the number one producer in the organization—but he was doing something most advisors weren't. He was putting clients first, even when it meant recommending solutions that were less profitable for the company. In 2012, that decision cost him everything. He lost his business, his clients, his niche, and spent a season wondering if he'd ever get back on his feet.Keith didn't just bounce back. He rebuilt—this time with intention. Today, he leads a 25-person firm that's on pace for more than $65M in new assets this year. He's done it by building a real team, integrating his entire family into the business, and putting purpose, generosity, and client outcomes at the center of everything. If you're a founder who's been knocked down—or you're carrying a weight that feels heavier than it should—Keith's story is a powerful reminder of what's possible on the other side.3 of the biggest insights from Keith Leverentz…#1.) The Cost of Doing What's Right (And Why It Paid Off Later)Keith was the #1 producer in his captive agency — until he refused to sell products that weren't in his clients' best interest. That decision got him fired. Keith explains the ethical dilemma that forced him out, the fear and isolation that followed, and how starting over with nothing eventually led to building a 25-person firm. If you've ever felt tension between growth and integrity, this part will hit close to home.#2.) Why Most Advisors Feel Overwhelmed (And How to Fix It)Keith explains why hiring an Executive Assistant dropped his stress by 40% — and why this role is one of the most overlooked leverage points in advisory firms. He also breaks down a hard truth about his own business: the org chart was “a mile wide and an inch deep.” This section is a masterclass on why founders become bottlenecks, how poor structure slows growth, and what it actually takes to scale beyond yourself.#3.) Why Undercharging Holds Advisors BackKeith shares how he realized he was undercharging — and why raising fees actually improved client outcomes instead of hurting relationships. You'll hear how expanding planning capabilities, trusting a bigger team, and clearly communicating value allowed him to move up-market with confidence. If you're worried about fee pressure, higher-net-worth clients, or whether you're “ready” for the next level, this section reframes the entire conversation.SHOW NOTEShttps://bradleyjohnson.com/148FOLLOW BRAD JOHNSON ON SOCIALTwitterInstagramLinkedInFOLLOW DBDL ON SOCIAL:YouTubeTwitterInstagramLinkedInFacebookDISCLOSURE DBDL podcast episode conversations are intended to provide financial advisors with ideas, strategies, concepts and tools that could be incorporated into their business and their life.
