Do you remember December 17th, 2005? It's the day SNL first aired the digital short Lazy Sunday by The Lonely Island. A sketch that changed SNL forever and literally started people watching YouTube. And now to celebrate those digital shorts, Seth Meyers, Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone are launching The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast. They're going to dive back into each of those digital shorts, how they came about, and what else happened on SNL that episode. They're going to discuss them in order, which means the good and the bad. And sometimes, to be honest, the bad are more fun to talk about. Find out how the sausage got made, or in this case, how the dick got in the box. Not all the clips we mention are available online. Some of them never even aired. But these are the ones we could find. On today's episode, I talk to Eisner Award-winning comics writer Kelly Sue DeConnick. Born in Columbus, OH, Kelly Sue moved around a lot as a child and eventually got into comics professionally through adapting translations of manga. Since the mid-aughts, she has jumped between creator-owned work for publishers like Image such as Pretty Deadly and Bitch Planet, and work-for-hire at Marvel and DC, including a defining run on Captain Marvel. Most recently, she created FML for Dark Horse. It returns this July, and is easily one of the best comics in the last year! In this heartfelt episode of The Surviving Siblings Podcast, host Maya Roffler welcomes Jessica Meyer, a bereaved sibling who lost her younger sister, Jen, to fentanyl addiction in 2021. Jessica opens up about the deep bond they shared growing up in a tight-knit Mexican-Jewish family and how addiction slowly dismantled their lives. Jen was so much more than her addiction—an empathetic, talented athlete and the life of every room she entered. Jessica walks us through Jen's undiagnosed Tourette's and ADHD, how she began self-medicating with Ambien as a teenager, and how this evolved into decades of addiction, multiple rehabs, and painful relapses. Jen later found purpose helping others through recovery—but her battle with addiction continued in secret. Jessica shares the heartbreaking story of Jen's final days, her passing just 48 hours after her daughter left for college, and the raw aftermath of losing her lifelong best friend. She also reveals the shocking discovery of a drug trafficking ring tied to Jen's death, her fight for justice, and the family's grief journey that followed. This powerful episode is an unflinching look at sibling loss through addiction and the devastating reality of fentanyl-related deaths. Jessica's vulnerability, courage, and passion to honor Jen's legacy through her jewelry brand, Bullet Girl, is a tribute to both pain and purpose. In This Episode: (00:01:00) – Jessica & Jen's Bond Jessica shares their close-knit childhood, imaginative games, and growing up inseparable in a loving family. (00:03:00) – Early Signs: Tourette's, ADHD & Ambien Use Jen's tics and impulsivity went undiagnosed for years. Ambien use in her teens became the beginning of her addiction journey. (00:08:00) – The Beginnings of Addiction Jessica reflects on Jen's coping mechanisms, her early experimentation, and how recreational use escalated. (00:12:00) – College, Trauma, and First Rehab Jen's assault trauma, college struggles, and introduction to harder drugs like crystal meth and cocaine are revealed. (00:19:00) – Marriage, Motherhood, and Addiction's Grip Despite marrying and becoming a mom, Jen's addiction deepened—leading to lost custody and deteriorating health. (00:24:00) – Boundaries, Guilt, and Tough Love Jessica painfully discusses the limits she had to set and the guilt of choosing distance the week before Jen passed. (00:28:00) – Jen's Role Helping Others in Recovery Jen found strength in working at a rehab center—offering guidance to others, even as she privately relapsed. (00:33:00) – The Day Jen Passed Jessica walks us through the traumatic discovery of Jen's body, the heartbreaking final hug, and the unanswered questions. (00:41:00) – Toxicology, Fentanyl, and Black Tar Heroin Jessica shares her detective work uncovering her sister's fentanyl use, her dealer's identity, and how evidence led nowhere. (00:49:00) – Justice Denied: The Aftermath Despite a paper trail and drug dealer identification, no legal justice has been served for Jen's death—fueling the family's heartbreak. (00:56:00) – Shame, Stigma, and Speaking Out Jessica talks about the stigma of fentanyl deaths, public silence, and the pain of people not seeing Jen beyond her addiction. (01:01:00) – Bullet Girl Jewelry & The Beautiful Struggle Jessica shares the story behind her jewelry line, the letter Jen wrote her, and the upcoming tribute collection called The Beautiful Struggle. (01:07:00) – Advice for Grieving Siblings Jessica urges listeners to give themselves grace, avoid shame, and stay grounded in love—not fear—through the grief journey This episode is sponsored by Bullet Girl Jewelry Connect with Jessica: Email: info@bulletgirl.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bulletgirljewelry/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bulletgirl111/ Connect with Maya: Podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/survivingsiblingspodcast/ Maya's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mayaroffler/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@survivingsiblingspodcast Twitter: https://x.com/survivingsibpod Website: thesurvivingsiblings.com Facebook Group: The Surviving Siblings Podcast YouTube: The Surviving Siblings Podcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TheSurvivingSiblingsPodcast

On today's episode, I talk to comics creator Michael DeForge. Originally from Ottawa, Michael had been making mini- and webcomics for years before he created his first "real" comic Lose, which was published by Koyama Press in 2009. Since then, he's published over a dozen books and collections through publishers like Koyama and Drawn & Quarterly, and also worked as a designer on Adventure Time for six seasons. His latest book Holy Lacrimony was published through Drawn & Quarterly just a few months ago, and it is fantastic! Join Kate and company as the boys discuss "Way of the Warrior Kid" by Jocko Willink, a decorated retired Navy SEAL, whose motto is, "You can do anything if you do the work.”Readers meet Marc, a 5th grader who can't swim, can't do pull-ups, and doesn't even know his multiplication facts. He has a false identity of being a wimp along with thinking he is dumb. His fixed mindset is holding Marc back until his Uncle Jake comes for a visit and Marc's training begins! This is something all parents and grandparents can do for their kids. Let them know that all problems and challenges can change for the better. Beginnings are difficult and often require a nudge or three : ) Once they start seeing the benefits of doing the work, they'll start pushing themselves. In the words of Uncle Jake, “Even if you can't perform at a high level, showing up and doing something is still a thousand times better than not showing up at all.” Doing the hard work to improve, no matter what, is how dreams turn into reality. “Discipline equals freedom.”By the end of the book, Marc has come up with his own warrior code. Are you ready to move forward? We're on a quest to read the best, won't you join us? Here's a link to Jocko's interview on why he wrote the book Jocko Willink and the Way of the Warrior KidLook for the movie in August!
In this episode, we sit down with four couples who open their hearts to us; Dr. Bakhe & Nokwanda Dlamini, Themba Tom & Katlego Ntuli, Janine & William Price, and Liscelle & Manqoba Lephoko. They share how their love stories began, what brought them together, and the real moments that have shaped their journeys, the laughter, the lessons, the prayers, and everything in between. It's honest. It's tender. And it's a reminder that love is layered, and still so beautiful

On today's episode, I talk to musician David Bazan. Originally from Phoenix, AZ, David started Pedro the Lion in 1995, and his first full-length album It's Hard to Find a Friend was released three years later on Jade Tree. In 2005, David recorded a more synthesizer-focused album as Headphones, and then a year later, Pedro the Lion broke up. David continued to record music under his own name, releasing albums on labels like Barsuk and Polyvinyl, and then in 2017, Pedro the Lion got back together and began a five-album cycle, with each album focusing on a city that David grew up in. The most recent was last year's Santa Cruz, which came out on Polyvinyl/Big Scary Monsters. 2025 marks the 20th anniversary of Headphones' lone album, and to commemorate the occasion, Suicide Squeeze just released a remastered edition at the end of May, and folks, it's just as fantastic as it was back in 2005! Life is a continuous cycle of endings and beginnings. Closing one chapter and opening another is as natural as breathing, and yet, we often resist the process of change. Even when an ending is welcome, it's easier to hold on to the familiar, rather than let go into the unknown. Ritual can assist us in the process of moving from one phase to another. By honoring the past, celebrating the experience, letting go, and making space, we can courageously step into a new beginning with more clarity, trust, and love. What am I reading? The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris by Edie Woodshttps://bookshop.org/a/111301/9780008713225A Well-Trained Wife by Tia Levingshttps://bookshop.org/a/111301/9781250288288https://bookshop.org/shop/witchywomanwalkingWhat's playing on repeat?Time of Your Life by GreendayWhat's for dinner? Visit https://huel.com/rejects to get 15% off your order Roxy Striar & Tara Erickson head back to Glenville Sanatorium in Declan O'Brien's 2011 prequel Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings, which reveals the origin of the Hillicker cannibals. In 1974, the deformed Hillicker brothers—Three Finger, Saw Tooth, and One Eye—spark a blood-soaked riot at the asylum, massacring staff before disappearing into the woods. Fast-forward to 2003: nine Weston University students—Kenia Perrin (Jenny Pudavick, Project Greenlight), Sara Washington (Tenika Davis, Diablo 3), Bridget Manalo (Kaitlyn Wong, Superman Returns) and their friends—snowmobile into a blizzard and take refuge in the same abandoned ward, unaware that the brothers still lurk within. What follows is a march of terror worthy of the franchise: Porter's grisly kitchen butchery, Claire's barbed-wire hang and decapitation, and the brutal trap that turns Kyle's desperate barricade into a fatal mistake. The girls' frantic fight leads to a harrowing outdoor snowmobile chase—complete with a razor-wire snare that decapitates the last survivors—while Three Finger hauls the severed heads away in his tow truck. Our hosts break down every ingenious kill, the bone-chilling asylum riot flashback, and the film's relentless winter-horror atmosphere that cements Bloody Beginnings as a cult favorite. When Hagar and her son, Ishmael, are kicked out of Abraham's quarters, they begin to lose faith that God is with them. But it's under a bush in the desert of Beersheba where they encounter God's provision and grace. We are praying for you!
We all tend to overestimate our abilities. For example, 93% of drivers think they're above average drivers. But what's that based on? How do we arrive at these conclusions? Similarly, do we overestimate our ability to know and understand how God works? Maybe we've defaulted to think God works in predictable ways. Or, maybe we think God doesn't, can't, and won't work in other ways. In Acts 9, the Lord spoke to Ananias in a dream and tells him to visit and pray for Saul. Ananias is understandably resistant to the idea that he is supposed to go and visit someone who was authorized by the leading priests to arrest everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord. Ananais chose to do what God wanted him to do, even though it went against what he knew to be true. God is always doing a new thing—moving in surprising and unexpected ways.
On today's episode, I talk to Merrill Garbus and Nate Brenner of the band Tune-Yards. Started by Merrill in the mid-aughts, Tune-Yards first official release Bird-Brains came out in 2009 on 4AD. Almost immediately, the band began to garner acclaim from Pitchfork, the Village Voice and many other publications. After the release of Bird-Brains, Merrill moved to Oakland where Nate lived, and since then, the two have recorded five more albums, a number of singles, as well as the score to the Boots Riley film Sorry to Bother You. Their latest, Better Dreaming, just came out a few weeks ago on 4AD, and it's wonderful! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter. with @aeyakovenko @alive_ethToday's episode features Solana cofounder Anatoly Yakovenko in conversation with a16z General Partner Ali Yahya, recorded live at our CSX Crypto Startup Accelerator program earlier this year.Anatoly shares the origin story of Solana — from a late-night eureka moment to thousands of investor meetings and several near-death startup experiences. He talks about what it took to get the network off the ground, how his engineering background at Qualcomm shaped its design, and why a need for speed gave Solana its edge. They also get into developer culture, engineering trade-offs, and what differentiates Solana's approach to building — including its willingness to ship, iterate, and rethink everything: including, most recently, its consensus algorithm.Timestamps:(0:00) Introduction(2:54) Early Career and Move to SF(3:57) Discovering Crypto and Solana's Beginnings(8:28) Challenges and Fundraising(12:12) Building Solana and Overcoming Obstacles(13:41) Solana's Vision and Market Strategy(17:23) Navigating Crises and Team Resilience(22:37) Solana's Unique Approach and Future Plans(24:57) Solana's Unique Approach to Software Development(26:35) Redesigning Solana: Lessons Learned(30:22) The Importance of Hackathons and Community(32:32) Technical Choices and Implications(34:16) Prioritizing User Experience Over Developer Comfort(36:40) Competitive Landscape of Layer 1 Chains(38:49) Building a Loyal Developer Community(42:36) Future of Blockchains and Solana's Vision(47:29) Long-Term View and GoalsAs a reminder, none of the content should be taken as investment, business, legal, or tax advice; please see a16z.com/disclosures for more important information, including a link to a list of our investments.

We're revisiting some of my favourite/most memorable/most impactful episodes throughout June!Sometimes I'm really taken aback by what an absolute privilege it is to do this job, and how people can be so open and honest with me. And I think it's a real honour that I get to help amplify the stories, and get the opportunity to really examine my own queerness and how that's shaped who I am.Maybe that's all a little bit too sentimental?Let's get on with what this show is about this week. I am joined by the British comedian, Jacob Truman, who sat down with me to talk about a small-town gay bar that was in the city where he went to University. The kicker? He never had the bravery to step foot in the place. So you've probably already guessed that this one's going to be heavy, but but I promise it's a good one.We talk all about making all of your decisions from a position of fear, being too scared to come out to your identical twin brother, and what it's like to glimpse through that sliver of a window at a life that you aren't brave enough to start for yourself.Do you have any memories of Christopher's, or clubbing from your own scene that you want to share? Well, if you have please get in touch - I want to create the biggest online record of people's memories and stories - go to www.lostspacespodcast.com and find the section 'Share a Lost Space' and tell me what you got up to! On today's episode, I talk to Constance Keane, Jamie Hyland and Sean Nolan of the band Dublin and London-based band M(h)aol. Formed in 2014, the band released a few EPs and singles in their early days, but it wasn't until 2023 that they released their first, full-length album Attachment Styles. A mere two years later, they've put out their second album Something Soft on Merge Records, and it's a delight! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter. When Mark Koernke (Mark from Michigan) called into the show late last year, I started the process of finding him a day on the calendar to tell his story. It's a story that really takes shape in the 1990's when the militia movements were growing, largely in response to escalating tensions with a federal government that was growing more brazen in its overreach. We are going to hear about the social conditions of the time, the development of alternative media, and a closer look at some of the more tragic and transformative events of the 1990's, from the perspective of a person who was in the middle of it all. We talk Texas bullies, private school bullies and every kind of bully in-between, the things you give up for your partner and how to deal with that, and we ask: is revenge worth it if you don't make it your life's mission?
