"Everything Gets Answered In Season 5..."Mekai Curtis On this Friday special of The Pivot Podcast, we sit down with actor Mekai Curtis, the breakout star of Raising Kanan, for an inspiring conversation about perseverance, family, and the journey to becoming one of television's most compelling leading men as part of Powerbook III's hit drama series. Mekai reflects on his early days as a child actor on Disney Channel, the sacrifices his family made to support his dreams, and how his parents' unwavering belief gave him the confidence to pursue a career in Hollywood. He opens up about the challenges of growing up in the entertainment industry, finding his identity as an actor, and the lessons that shaped him along the way. The conversation dives into his starring role as Kanan Stark in Raising Kanan, including the pressure of carrying a hit series, the show's massive success, and what it's been like collaborating with executive producer 50 Cent and an accomplished cast and creative team. Mekai shares behind-the-scenes stories, discusses the relationships he's built with his fellow actors, and reveals how he prepares for one of television's most complex characters. With Season 5 marking the final chapter of Raising Kanan, Mekai reflects on the show's legacy, the emotional process of saying goodbye, and what he hopes fans take away from Kanan's journey. He promises that cliffhangers will be answered and the show will make viewers live and breathe every scene. He also discusses the importance of balancing real life with the darker realities of the character he portrays and how he protects his mental and emotional well-being while bringing Kanan to life. "You never know what insight or information you're going to glean from someone, and so I want to be open to surprises. And not have any preconceived notions of what, who this person is, what they're going to tell me, imposing my own values, beliefs, whatever on them, because it's all a discovery," says Pulitzer Prize-winner Barry Meier, whose piece "You Can Run" appears in The Atavist Magazine.Barry Meier is here for another Atavistian chat! Yeah, these have not come out in as timely a manner as I had hoped. The late delay of the “revived” one with Mac Montandon, and having pods that were getting moldy in the can too precedence. Anyway …Barry Meier has won this little award you might have heard of called the, what is it, oh, yes, the Pulitzer Prize as part of a team of reporters in International Reporting for the New York Times. He's also been a finalist for the Pulitzer and a two-time winner of the George Polk Award. He's got a new piece out for The Atavist magazine titled: You Can Run: When their parents ripped two young sisters from their privileged lives, gave them fake names, and took them on the lam, they thought it was because their father was in trouble with the IRS. It would be years before they learned the truth about his life of crime.”He's the author of three books, Pain Killer, which was the first to chronicle the Sackler family and the origin of the opioid epidemic. “The book that started it all,” wrote Patrick Radden Keefe, whose book Empire of Pain was heavily informed by Barry's work. Barry also wrote Spooked and Missing Man. You can learn more about Barry at barryemierbooks.com . On today's episode, I talk to musician Jeff Mueller. Originally from Louisville, KY, Jeff formed the band Rodan in 1992 with his friend Jason Noble, releasing the seminal album Rusty two years later on Quarterstick Records. After Rodan broke up, Jeff formed June of 44, and they put out almost an album a year until they stopped playing together in 1999. Rodan's break-up also blossomed into a new band for Jeff and Jason, Shipping News. Shipping News released numerous albums over the next fifteen years, many of them on Quarterstick, until Jason's death in 2012. Most recently, Solid Brass Records released Jeff and Jason's first high school group King G & the J Krew, which is somewhere in-between Rodan and the Beastie Boys, and it is a delight! This week on Cinema Shock, we're beginning our deep dive into the master of genre cinema with John Carpenter: The Shape of Dread. To set the stage, we're throwing it back to an episode from April 2021, where we originally analyzed DARK STAR through the lens of its co-writer, special effects designer, and lead actor, Dan O'Bannon. We're dissecting the brilliant, low-budget ingenuity required to get this movie off the ground, analyzing how Carpenter's atmospheric scoring and structural pacing first mixed with O'Bannon's cynical, comedic sensibilities. We explore the film's unique legacy — a bridge between the utopian sci-fi of the late 60s and the gritty, blue-collar cosmic dread that would define the late 70s. Join us as we look back at the origins of a legendary cinematic partnership, the absurdity of the "Thermostellar Bomb," and the very beginning of John Carpenter's filmography.

Heirloom, the new album from singer-songwriter Nathan Evans Fox, is out and an impressive manifestation of both creativity and almost historical documentation of an Appalachian artist. Fox joined Roots Music Rambler this week to talk about the new album, his journey to Nashville from the mountains of Western Carolina, fatherhood and more.  Like many artists today, Fox often shares little snippets of what he's working on via social media posts. One nugget of a song-to-be he shared a few months back drove well over one million views across his channels and the song wasn't more than a few lines. He took the queue to finish it in what became “Hillbilly Hymn (Okra & Cigarettes)” which anchors the album. It has a traditional mountain feel and was recorded in an a capella focus with what seems like family gathered round his singing on the front porch.  But the record traverses everything from fatherly advice for a child in Lots of Beginnings to a brilliant “fuck you” song for those Fox gives permission to hate in “Landlords Bill Lee Etc.” It's an amazing mix of home spun advice and statements about the polarization of today's world. He told us the record is a bit of a “seed bank” of his life for his children and the world he'll leave behind. Fox has never shied away from politics or social issues. He even told us when thinking about commercial country music, “The songs about trucks and jello shots don't come organically to me.” He told Frank and Falls a little about gourds, blueberries and seed banking, acknowledged participating in fundamentalist Christian rites like exorcisms, and told us he's leading an anti-confederate southern history book club this summer. To say we were entertained is an understatement. We think you'll be too.  Frank and Falls also share Roots Music Ramblers official member votes for this year's Americana Music Association awards and offer up music recommendations in our Pickin' the Grinnin' segment. Falls recently finished Ken Burn's documentary on Country Music. Frank shared an Instagrammer from Italy that just brings people joy in his feed named Metroman. Description:He's back — and this time he brought a memoir. Comedian Kevin James Thornton returns to For the Love, and if you thought you knew Kevin from his hilarious auto-tuned TikToks and wired-headphone microphone bits, this conversation will lovingly surprise you. Kevin's debut memoir, Big Baby: On Endings, Beginnings, and an Interdimensional Cat, traces his journey from performing as a literal sin clown on a youth group mission trip in 1990s New York City, to grinding it out on the stand-up circuit in LA, to touring one-man shows across the US, Canada, and eventually the world — Helsinki, Stockholm, Paris — all the way to present-day Cincinnati, where he's navigating a major life upheaval with nothing but his 13-pound black cat Comet and an extraordinary amount of hard-won self-awareness. In this conversation, Kevin opens up about what it actually took to write a book — including the two-week-long Airbnb retreat where he mostly just slept and watched TV because his attention span had been completely obliterated — and what surprised him most about recording the audiobook (hint: he cried, more than once, and they left it in). He talks about the strange, freeing moment he realized he no longer needed to prove himself to anyone, and how that shift was the very thing that made his work finally land. And he reflects on the beautiful, sometimes maddening truth that life doesn't end so much as it just keeps beginning again. Thought-provoking Quotes: "Even when I was living in my car, I was still dreaming about the next creative project...I was like that when I was 20. And I'm like that today." – Kevin James Thornton "I didn't realize that I went out into the world constantly trying to prove myself, that I was someone without Jesus. I didn't know that's what I was doing. I can see it so clearly looking backward now." – Kevin James Thornton "We sort of hand over this personal power to other people. It takes a long time to recognize and unlearn that." – Kevin James Thornton Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Brick - https://getbrick.com Jen's Substack - https://jenhatmaker.substack.com/ Sarah Bessey's Substack - https://sarahbessey.substack.com/ Big Baby: On Endings, Beginnings, and an Interdimensional Cat by Kevin James Thornton - https://amzn.to/4mVYPAJ Laughing Toward The Light: Comedian James Thornton Finds Himself at 50 - https://jenhatmaker.com/podcasts/series-55/laughing-toward-the-light-comedian-james-thornton-finds-himself-at-50/ Create with Kevin (watercolor videos) - https://www.instagram.com/reel/DX-UksfK1pG/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== Enneagram assessment - https://www.enneagraminstitute.com/ The Comedy Store - https://thecomedystore.com/ Big Baby audiobook - https://amzn.to/4eClfVL Guest's Links: Website - https://www.kevinjamesthornton.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/kevinjamesthornton Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/kevinjamesthornton1 Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNQbKNgL8bcuH8z4pzh9flw TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@kevinjamesthornton Substack - https://kevinjamesthornton.substack.com/ Connect with Jen!Jen's Website - https://jenhatmaker.com/ Jen's Instagram - https://instagram.com/jenhatmakerJen's Twitter - https://twitter.com/jenHatmaker/ Jen's Facebook - https://facebook.com/jenhatmakerJen's YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/JenHatmaker The For the Love Podcast is presented by Audacy.  To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode of All for the Kingdom, Pastor Ben Smith preaches from 2 Kings 2:1–19 on the transition from Elijah to Elisha. Elijah's ministry is coming to an end, but God's work is not ending. Elisha is being prepared, affirmed, and entrusted with the prophetic ministry God has called him to fulfill. This passage teaches three important principles for the life of the church. First, all men come to an end. Even the greatest servants of God are limited by the weakness of the flesh, but God is eternal and His kingdom continues. Second, each generation must invest in the next. Elijah's relationship with Elisha reminds us that faithful ministry requires time, access, discipleship, and purpose. Third, the next generation must be affirmed in faithful calling, godly authority, and service to the Lord. This sermon calls believers to think carefully about how they are preparing for endings and beginnings. The church must not labor merely to preserve institutions, methods, or personal legacies. The church must labor to proclaim the gospel, honor the Word of God, and prepare the next generation to serve faithfully in a difficult world. To learn more, visit BenSmithSr.org.

In Peter's second sermon, he shows us the nature of our hearts — that we reject Jesus, and we are ignorant about it. But despite these realities, God offers us what all of us most need — forgiveness, refreshment, and restoration. In this sermon, we look at how Peter's words can still speak to us today. On today's episode, I talk to cartoonist Ron Regé Jr. Raised in Plymouth, MA, Ron began making minicomics in the late 1980s, and about a decade later, his first book Skibber Bee Bye was published by Highwater Books. For the next decade, he released comics and graphic novels through Drawn & Quarterly, but a frustration with comics changed his aesthetic focus, and starting with his next book The Cartoon Utopia, Ron began to be published by Fantagraphics. His most recent comic It's Over came out late last year on Parsifal Press. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter. Nathan Evans Fox: Lots of Beginnings and Other Hard Truths

Country Music Dads

This week, the Country Music Dads welcome Nathan Evans Fox to the podcast. He is a Nashville-based country music artist and dad with a fascinating new album on the way. He explores his own country upbringing. Using traditional themes of land, hard work and faith, he approaches his music and life from the political left, in a space considered very conservative. Fox's album Heirloom is out May 29 on Free Dirt Records.Show Notes:3:12 - A discussion of “Lots of Beginnings” brings the conversation to the very end of the album, as Nathan explains the process of losing his dad and becoming one in the same year -- and how he landed on the title of the Heirloom album. And we dive deep into family right away.6:00 - Nathan's connection to family, family land and the family system, is deeply connected to his political understanding. His understanding is wildly personal, tactile and real. The family land allowed him to know his extended family through his universe of ghosts -- and it still looms large in his experience even after the family sold it.9:50 - Growing up very weird and country go hand in hand with Nathan's experience.10:50 - A feeling of home vs enjoying where you live. Nathan and the dads talk about how to create a home. Grief, economics and complications.12:10 - His time as a hospital chaplain exposed Nathan to the full range of emotions of those at the hardest points in their lives, forcing him to radically listen. These experiences drove him to be more explicit about the need for his music to become more message-driven. It also put his life as an artist in perspective.15:50 - Going viral with “Hillby Hymn” and bringing liberation theology to country music fans, and how Nathan became many folks' favorite worship leader.18:51 - Understanding how to square yourself to the cultural dominance of Christianity in the bible belt, and how this language can be used as a vernacular poetic experience, one that helps folks accept something they don't expect.25:48 - “We belong and we feel, well before we think or form ideologies,” Nathan said. And we should likely get back to knowing our neighbors and caring.26:35 - A discussion of Nathan's music feels a bit like contemporary Christian music, suggested Dave. And Nathan felt called out.28:45 - Talking about “Racecar” and its place within contemporary country music, or as Nathan calls it, “Butthole Country Music.” Dave and Nathan geek out about Bro Country and how “Racecar” references “Dirt Road Anthem” for tone. Yet the topic of this song is anything but traditional -- in fact, it's pretty divisive. The guys jump into the question of politics of it all.34:24 - The Dad Life Sound Check featuring songs from Roger Miller, Ryan Bingham and Corb Lund & Hayes Carll.Thank you for listening. This last episode before summer has us dreaming of the beach, Slushies—watching moonlight on the waves, reading novels in the sand. But not before we share this packed episode with you. Today we welcome special guest, Daniel Kuriakose, to hear about “The Common Well,” the literary journal he's relaunching alongside K Hank Jost. Daniel sticks around for our discussion of two poems by Mara Lee Grayson.     We admire the duality on display in the first poem's back and forth-ness which has us pondering the undulation of its syntax. The late reveal of whom the lyric speaker addresses is satisfying surprise. A clever turn of phrase sends the more seasoned members of the team straight to this 90's Divinyls' song. The way enjambment revises meaning after a line break in both of these poems reminds Jason of Heather McHugh's poetry. And ultimately Kathy bring us back to the two questions we ask of every submission: do you want to stay with the poem and do you want to share it? Join us in sharing our deep thanks for two members of our staff who are with us for the final time: Reese, our co-op, and Lillie, our sound engineer. Best of luck to your both in the future. Thank you, Reese! Thank you, Lillie! Over the summer, keep tuning in for a retrospective with deep cuts from our archive. Thanks, as always, for listening!      At the table: Dagne Forrest, Tobi Kassim, Daniel Kuriakose (special guest from “A Common Well”), Reese Pfunder, Jason Schneiderman, Kathleen Volk Miller, Lisa Zerkle, Lillie Volpe (sound engineer), Derek Grebis (sound engineer)          Author Bio: Mara Lee Grayson's poetry has appeared in Poetry Northwest, Tampa Review, and Nimrod, among other literary journals, and has been nominated multiple times for the Best of the Net and Pushcart Prizes. Grayson is the author or editor of five books of nonfiction. She holds an MFA from The City College of New York and a PhD from Columbia University and was previously a tenured professor in the California State University system. Originally from Brooklyn, New York, she currently resides in New Jersey.     Social media: @maraleegrayson  Website: maragrayson.com    She Winds Her Stems through Fire for Burning Leaves Fend Off the Grief of Being Mowed On the trampoline, young boys next door              bounce while inside, their mothers   debate wine or coffee. Another weekend              when the county's on emergency alert.    For now, bees land on dogwood flowers,               robins nest in tall trees    planted by the prior owners,              and my husband's on his knees out back   for hours, pulling branches from hydrangeas              I have neither time nor thumb    to nurture back to life. He's learned a lot              in efforts to identify the colony of ants    that sent a scout across our deck, through               the side door to a cat food bowl,    like what distinguishes Bumblebee               from Carpenter (they look the same,    the bumble fuzzier). A million years               of evolution, the male bee    still hovers in one place, waiting               for a female to fly by. I fold laundry   then look up which buds bloomed               in 17th Century Versailles. (You'd guess    invasive species but, unironically,              it's narcissus and orange blossoms.)    For years, I worshipped palms               on the other side of the Continental Divide,    like I was replanted, like new soil               could change the nature of the seed.   I looked for lightning and caught language              in my mouth. I dreamed of blooms,    then woke up in the desert,               staring at a mountain, believed to be    an imprint of ancient gods whose voices               echoed off the surface of the earth.    The nervous system replicates in utero,              its fight or flight part predetermined,    part piano keys the brain may tap. Healing,              says the therapist, happens in the pendulation.   Insects bounce along the glass as children,               mothers sip merlot in coffee mugs,    and the man I married after you               tans wrist to elbow, scratching up his forearms    rending dead wood stems. It's sticky business,              caught between my lush, infertile soil and flirting    with the bees, he knows that when I think about you,               I touch my self-concept on the page.    What the Fortune Teller Tells Me on the Night I Leave California The Channel Islands will one day rise up in the distance like a resurrected poet  high on mescaline and memories of pretty women. You will or won't  learn how to tunnel through a prison  of the mind. When the wind picks up, she says  she was awoken by the rumble of a saw  told so many times it must be true.  You might as well  drive six years backward, park beside a pool  in west New Jersey.                                       I think she means  beginnings are like endings: eyelid work,  a neuron matter, not ontology or god.  To transit is to navigate the synapses,  trade one water for another,  every body's chemistry the same  except for how the furniture's arranged,  which pieces we keep secret from ourselves.  She eschews the label hypocrite,  calls herself a hippopotamus instead. Oh, she's drinking like a river now,    but can you honestly say you've never felt  a kinship for a living being who could crush you and the glass of bourbon in your hand? Maybe when you were a child, your father  chalked equations on a dusty blackboard. Your height in centimeters  is your adolescent telephone number  divided by the times your mother screamed  bringing you into this world.

What is the work of restoration that we, the church, are called to do today? How can we begin to do it? Key Verses: Acts 3:1-11

What makes a great CEO today won't be enough tomorrow. In this episode of Partnering Leadership, Mahan Tavakoli speaks with Carolyn Dewar, McKinsey Senior Partner and coauthor of A CEO for All Seasons—a practical, research-backed roadmap for leaders navigating the full arc of CEO leadership. Building on her global work advising top executives and the success of her previous bestseller CEO Excellence, Carolyn offers a candid, timely, and deeply strategic perspective on how CEOs can lead—and let go—with clarity, discipline, and impact.Carolyn and Mahan explore the four leadership “seasons” every CEO moves through: preparation, early tenure, sustained performance, and exit. But what sets this conversation apart is its real-world focus on what actually trips up leaders—misjudged transitions, misplaced confidence, and the false comfort of past success. This isn't theoretical leadership advice—it's practical insight shaped by years of advising CEOs and boards during high-stakes moments. What emerges is a compelling case for fit over familiarity, foresight over reaction, and reinvention over complacency. Carolyn makes it clear that the best CEOs aren't simply great strategists—they're great at timing, sequencing, and knowing when to shift or step aside. She shares stories of leaders who planned their exits with grace and those who stayed too long—and why boards often get it wrong. If you're a CEO, board member, or senior leader shaping the next phase of your organization, this conversation will challenge how you think about leadership longevity and legacy. You'll walk away with practical framing for making bold decisions and managing change—not just within your business, but within yourself.Actionable Takeaways• Hear how to recognize the brief “unfreezing moment” that gives new CEOs a rare chance to reshape direction, expectations, and ambition • Learn why even the most successful CEOs must reinvent themselves—or risk becoming the barrier to future growth • Discover why the best succession plans start in a CEO's first year, not their last • You'll learn how boards often default to “more of the same”—and why that mindset leads to costly misalignment • Explore Carolyn's take on what only the CEO can and should do—and how over-functioning CEOs damage execution • Hear how some leaders design in tension—reverse mentors, red teams, bold advisors—to avoid echo chambers • Learn how to approach succession planning not as a person to pick, but as work to define • Find out what CEOs should leave behind in their final year—and what mistakes lock in poor transitions • You'll hear examples of how great CEOs sustain performance through S-curves while preparing for what's next • Gain perspective on how Carolyn sees AI as a CEO's partner, not a proxy for real leadershipConnect with Carolyn DewarA CEO for All SeasonsCarolyn Dewar LinkedInConnect with Mahan Tavakoli:Mahan Tavakoli Website Mahan Tavakoli on LinkedIn Partnering Leadership Website

Lloyd and Wallace Brenna are two Midwestern brothers whose outwardly ordinary lives conceal a long pattern of troubling behavior. From rural North Dakota beginnings to a 1971 bombing in South Dakota, the story moves through wiretapping, theft, and an attempted assassination. Built from years of research and original reporting, the series follows the Brennas while, in parallel, the life of the victim unfolds, carrying a quiet, growing sense of dread toward an unsettling end. A serious story, with moments of dark humor along the way. A special thanks to Mike Wald and Derrik Dyka for their contributions to this episode.
