On today's 16th anniversary episode, I talk to Emmy Award-winning TV and comic writer and podcaster Elliott Kalan. Originally from Millburn, NJ, Elliott started as a PA at The Daily Show in 2003 and eventually worked his way up to head writer. In addition to The Daily Show, he's written for the Academy Awards, MST3K, Netflix's upcoming Ghostbusters cartoon and many other shows. As a comic writer, he's written Spider-Man and the X-Men, Harley Quinn and his own Maniac of New York, and as a podcaster, Elliot has been one of the three hosts of the wonderful Flop House, which has been running since 2007. This is just a small sampling of Elliott's CV, and the latest addition is his new book Joke Farming: How to Write Comedy and Other Nonsense, which was just published by University of Chicago Press at the end of last year! This week at ease, we're exploring what it means to stay curious and creative. In a world that moves fast and asks us to have all the answers, we slow down with a gentle, expansive conversation about learning, creativity, and staying soft enough to evolve. From making mistakes to making meaning, this episode is for the ones trying to figure it out without losing themselves in the process. Nailea and Justus reflect on what school never taught us, how our creativity gets shaped by self-worth, and the lifelong work of rebuilding how we define intelligence. Together, we unpack the difference between performance and purpose, and why we tend to doubt ourselves even when we care deeply. And on today's episode, we get all into how she moved to the UK for a relaysh (but not the relaysh the internet seems to think she moved for... what?!), achieving your dreams in a foreign country, how that relationship fizzled, walking your cat on a leash, the power of the mid-life crisis and TONS MORE! In this week's episode, Jessica joins Megan to talk about her journey into vet rehab and how she first started out within a GP practice. She shares practical tips and advice on integrating vet rehab into a clinic that doesn't offer it yet. They then explore the pros and cons of starting a vet rehab practice in two ways: (1) growing slowly and expanding as finances allow, and (2) going all in with loans and purchasing all the equipment upfront. The year London was founded will always be disputed, but the most recent archaeological evidence suggests the Romans had created the first settlement on the north bank of the Thames by 48 AD, five years after their invasion. That early military encampment expanded to become a busy, cosmopolitan supply base until it was burned down in the Boudican revolt of 60 AD. In the first episode of her series tracing the history of London, Rosemary Hill is joined by Dominic Perring, archaeologist and author of London in the Roman World, to examine the development of Londinium over its tumultuous first century, during which it grew to a population of 30,000 and it acquired all the recognisable Roman landmarks – forum, basilica, baths, amphitheatre – before facing its second great destructive event around 125 AD. In their next episode, Rosemary and Dominic consider Roman London's second revival and the emergence of new belief systems and monuments before its eventual abandonment by Rome at the start of the fifth century. Tune in as Pastor Loïs unpacks Genesis 4-5. He discusses the nature of sin as a "demon at the door" which may look cute but is ready to pounce and devour you if you open the door to it. We are mandated by God to have dominion over the sin in our lives. There are two types of people-- those ruled by sin and those ruled by God. Let's be a people that forsakes the sin in our lives and endeavors to care for our brothers and sisters that may be struggling in their walk with the Lord. -Featuring Loïs Renaud

Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Wayne Hall, Ken Fuller and Jeffrey Crecelius This week Mark and I began a mini series on songs that appear on Yes members' solo albums but could have been re-worked as effective Yes songs. It was interesting to listen to our first subject, Steve Howe's first 3 solo albums, Beginnings, The Steve Howe Album and Turbulence back-to-back. There are plenty of differences to enjoy, plus some singing from Steve. We compared notes on several songs and also assigned what we called a 'Yesability score' to each song. All will be revealed in our conversation. Which Howe solo songs did we choose? Is it easy to tell what could have been Yes songs instead of solo numbers? How does Steve's music change over the years? History includes a lot of highs and lows, but England's Interregnum period was a particularly low low. King Charles I had been defeated in the English Civil War and was tried and beheaded in January 1649. For the next eleven years, various flavors of religious extremists, mostly under the sway of Oliver Cromwell, governed the realm (badly).Cromwell died in 1658 and his successor, his son Richard, proved a more miserable leader than even his predecessors, which led to the restoration of the monarchy and Charles II strolling into an eager London on his 30th birthday. By then, his reputation as a ladies' man was already well established, and for a grateful nation, it was time to let the good times roll once again.Listen ad-free at patreon.com/trashyroyalspodcast.To advertise on this podcast, reach out to info@amplitudemediapartners.com.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Pastor Bryan takes a look at how God's good creation suffered great tragedy. It started with Satan in disguise who deceived Eve into doubting God by sowing confusion, contradiction, and corruption. Let's reflect on God's inquiries to Adam and Eve-- Where are you? Who told you that? -- and take inventory on our walk with Him and who we've been listening to. Maybe we'll find that we need to recommit and say to God, "Lord, I need You!" -Featuring Bryan Ost

In Ted Bundy for the Defense: Part One, we examine the earliest confirmed crimes of Ted Bundy and the investigation that led to his first conviction. This episode follows Bundy's documented attacks beginning in 1974, starting with the brutal assault of Karen Sparks and the murder of University of Washington student Lynda Ann Healy. As young women continue to disappear across Washington State, investigators begin to notice a disturbing pattern—college-aged victims with similar physical characteristics, abducted under similar circumstances. We track Bundy's movements from Washington to Utah and Colorado, including the Lake Sammamish abductions that introduced the “Ted” suspect and his relocation to Utah as law enforcement closed in. The episode details the disappearances and murders of Nancy Wilcox, Melissa Anne Smith, Laura Aime, and others, highlighting how Bundy's crimes escalated while investigators struggled to connect cases across state lines.Part One also explores Bundy's personal life and psychology—his unstable academic career, rejection from elite law schools, political ambitions, and turbulent romantic relationships—and how these failures fueled a growing sense of entitlement and resentment. The episode concludes with the attempted kidnapping of Carol DaRonch, her survival and identification of Bundy, his arrest in Utah, and his 1976 conviction for aggravated kidnapping—marking the first time Ted Bundy was held criminally accountable.Sources: The Bundy Murders: A Comprehensive History, Kevin M. You're sitting at the edge of something you want. Maybe a new project, maybe a decision you've been circling for months. The calendar says it's time to begin. But your body hesitates. Not because you're unclear, but because starting feels heavier than it should. Y'all, that heaviness isn't a flaw. It's a threshold. And in this episode, I'm diving into why beginnings are actually identity moments (not just logistical tasks) and how rituals can help you cross that threshold when readiness feels impossible. Here's what we're covering: Why ambitious women interpret starting friction as personal failure (and what to do instead) The concept of liminality: being "betwixt and between" who you were and who you're becoming Three types of beginning rituals: opening rituals, reset rituals, and courage rituals The difference between habits (that manage time) and rituals (that assign meaning) Why identity often lags behind your desire and your action Real stories: from helping my daughter release anxiety with dance moves to writing "I am a savvy business woman" every morning The big insight: Beginnings don't ask for readiness. They ask for orientation. And ritual can be the doorway you're allowed to walk through slowly. Your challenge this week: Choose one moment that feels slightly resistant Pick your threshold (start of workday? returning to a dream? saying yes to fear?) Add a sensory marker or identity question: "Who am I invited to become here?" Meet yourself at the threshold—not with pressure, but with presence If you're a woman in a high-pressure job who wants to pursue bold goals without losing yourself—even when life feels banana pants—this episode is your permission slip to begin with ritual, not just willpower. Next week: I'm talking with Ayelet Fishbach (author of Get It Done) about why procrastination shows up when goals threaten our identity. You won't want to miss it! My close friend Christine came over on New Year's Day and we caught up on what's ahead. We talk about friendship, big life transitions, and the constant evolution we all experience. She's candid about how she's changed creatively, professionally, and personally, including navigating freelance work amid uncertainty, and her excitement about becoming a parent and how pregnancy has unexpectedly fueled her productivity. We reflect on our last interviews, what she's learned since, and the importance of staying adaptable. She's quietly shown me how to move through change with poise and loved getting to have a time capsule conversation of this time in her life. It's a warm, reflective conversation about staying adaptable, new beginnings and staying on nodding terms with past versions of ourselves. By using Gottman's Soft Start-Up, a gentle, respectful approach centered on "I" statements and emotional safety, couples can transform conflict into collaboration and deepen intimacy through empathy and trust. Read along with the original article(s) here: https://www.couplestherapyinc.com/softened-start-up-gottmans-way-to-gentle-beginnings/ Quotes to ponder: "Lead with kindness and respect. This significantly reduces the likelihood of these toxic behaviors." "By practicing Soft Start-Up, the couple learns to see each other as allies rather than adversaries." "You are letting your partner know you aren't picking a fight, just asking for behavior change."
On today's episode, I talk to musician Steven Brown. Originally from Chicago, IL, Steven moved to San Francisco in the 1970s, where he eventually joined the artist collective and commune The Angels of Light. It was though this group that he would meet his collaborators in the brilliant post-punk band Tuxedomoon. In 1980, they released their first album Half-Moon on Ralph Records, and eventually relocated to Brussels, where they began to release albums on the influential label Crammed Discs. In 1983, Steven began recording albums on his own, and his first record Music for Solo Piano, was released by Crépuscule the following year. Since then Steven has recorded numerous albums and soundtracks on his own and with Tuxedomoon, and his latest In This Very World will be released February 20th on Crammed Discs, and folks, it's great! The 2025 season of Star Wars has come to an end and we hope everyone had a great year and happy holidays with family and friends! To start this new year of 2026, Catrina Dennis from The Geeky Waffle and the CEO of Ventress, joins us as we take a fond look back at the Star Wars chapters that closed in the colloquial "Phase 2" and all the personal stories that were created, from ANDOR season 2, Skeleton Crew, Visions Vol. 3, to anniversaries celebrated for Revenge Of The Sith and The Force Awakens, and publishing stories like The High Republic and Legacy Of Vader. Jameela Jamil is back for a killer crossover! We were recently guests on her show Wrongs Turns, where we told embarrassing stories from our past, and now Jameela joins us to further delve into her romantic and therapeutic life! Last time she was on, LA was burning, and we spent the majority of the conversation looking out the window just in case things got inferno-y. But the fires are over and everything in the world is good now. Ahem. Anyway, we get into it with Jameela about the wide gulf between her public persona and how she feels inside about herself. We talk meeting her bf James Blake, the songs he writes about her and again, how his version of her clashes with her own self-image. We talk about not wanting to be perceived and how a nice paycheck and a little dissociation can overcome those feelings, and of course, we talk dental hygiene! PLUS, obvi, we answer YOUR advice questions! If you'd like to ask your own advice questions, call 323-524-7839 and leave a VM or just DM us on IG or Twitter! We're in culture critic and Vulture writer Sean Malin's book The Podcast Pantheon: 101 Podcasts That Changed How We Listen!ALSO BUY A SUPER CUTE "Open Your Hearts, Loosen Your Butts" mug! As we celebrate the new year, there's no better guide than the poet, Anglican priest, and scholar, Malcolm Guite. Through the years, Malcolm has written beautifully on how poetic language can help our imaginations apprehend truth that our reason cannot fully comprehend. In this episode he describes Merlin's Isle: An Arthuriad, his forthcoming four-volume epic poem on the legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, which will be published over several years by Rabbit Room Press. He has described his purpose: making a poem that restores the spiritual elements that have been shorn away from these legends and renews their deepest meaning for our time:"You don't have to invent yourself because somebody else who loves you has already done it. You from the beginning, the real heart of who you are, deeper and more beautiful than you could ever know, has simmered in the Divine mind since before the beginning of time. And now he's speaking to you."With this work, Malcolm brings into the 21st century the epic tradition that includes Lewis, Tolkien, Milton and many others.
