If you haven't heard of The Onion, a satirical news publication, you've no doubt come across the many memes and parodies inspired by its style. The Onion began with a group of scrappy Gen-Xer's who wanted to poke fun at mainstream news. It's evolved into an at times biting, oftentimes comic, cultural critic. What role does humor play in making the world make sense? Author Christine Wenc, a member of The Onion's original staff, joins Dana Taylor on the Excerpt to discuss her new book “Funny Because It's True,” which is on bookshelves now. Send us a textIn this episode, Arnie, Fred and Glenn begin by briefly tracing the establishment of the Lord's Church. In later episodes we will look at the beginnings of various religious bodies existent today. We begin by noting that Jesus promised to build His Church. We note the meaning of the word "Church" and also point out that it is also called His Kingdom. We move on to discuss the fact that Christ did establish His church as He promised. Our discussion notes that the Bible tells us when it was established and how it was to come into being and we note those passages. The Bible is clear as to the Founder of Christ's Church and we talk about that. Christ's Church has a head that is specified in one passage, and we look at that passage. The basis of the establishment of Christ's Church is also revealed to us in the scriptures. We discuss two of those passages found in Acts. We close out this episode by noting the uniqueness of Christ's Church. Take about 30-minutes to listen in on our discussion. Have your Bible handy so you can verify what we are saying, There is a transcript of this Buzzsprout episode provided for your convenience.
On today's episode, I talk to musician John Davis. Growing up in Cambridge, MA, John formed The Folk Implosion with Sebadoh and Dinosaur Jr.'s Lou Barlow in the early 1990s. Their first album 1994's Take a Look Inside was a brilliant lo-fi pop record, and then a year later, a song of theirs on the Kids soundtrack blew up, and in the diverse atmosphere that had been created in Nirvana's wake, the band was noticed by a number of larger labels. Their third album would be released by Interscope, after which John left the band. As a solo artist, John has released many albums under different names on labels like Shrimper, and just last year, Lou and he got back together to make a new Folk Implosion album. Walk Thru Me was released on Joyful Noise last June, and it is quite wonderful! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter. To end the show, the hosts check in with Adnan Virk (22:35) of MLB Network and Amazon Prime Monday Night Hockey. This week we go back to the beginning with Wrong Turn 4:Bloody Beginnings, Returning guest and queen of the B-movie and culinary horrorSarah Stubbs ((Final Girls Feast) is on Mike's side championing the merits ofthis blizzard-set, asylum located slasher. Meanwhile Devaughn has recruited firsttime guest Sean Abley (creator and co-editor of Queer Horror: A Film Guide) to talk about why returning director Declan O'Brienjust doesn't have the juice to make this anything more than standard direct to-videofare. With a tongue planted firmly in cheek, some forward thinking queerrepresentation, practical effects, real snow, a pretty spooky on-set location, and a show stopping human fondue gory as hell kill, at the very least BloodyBeginnings marks a solid rebound over the dreadful (in Mike's eyes) thirdentry. Is it really okay to end something that's working well? After much consideration, I've decided to pause production of Your Secret is Safe With Me indefinitely while I pursue new creative endeavors. This decision wasn't made because anything is wrong—quite the opposite. My experience with this transition mirrors what many of my clients face in their relationships and life choices. There's often a belief that we shouldn't end something that's "good enough" or that we must finish everything we've started. But what if the most faithful act to ourselves is allowing evolution, even when it means leaving something valuable behind? This final episode explores the legitimacy of change and the permission we all deserve to give ourselves when moving in new directions. Entrepreneurship, financial anxiety, and a guinea pig (yes, really). When you've got a stuffed guinea pig on your desk and a mic in front of you, it's only a matter of time before you talk about that one time you ate guinea pig in Peru. (Spoiler: It was pretty good.) That's how we open today's show—but from there, things get real. Today's main event features Rudy Mawer, founder of 60 Day Hustle, who joins Joe Saul-Sehy to share his incredible story. Rudy grew up in a modest home in England, raised by two world-class triathletes who pushed him to pursue excellence. He didn't come from wealth—but he did build it, and fast. Rudy opens up about: His path from sports scientist to serial entrepreneur The role mentorship and strategic networking played in his success Why legacy matters just as much as hustle His latest documentary project and what drives him today Then, we turn to a conversation sparked by actor Seth Rogen's recent interview with Dax Shepard. Rogen confessed he's spent years saving out of fear—and maybe missed out on life in the process. So we ask: Are you hoarding cash out of anxiety? What happens when your savings plan becomes a cage? And how can Stackers find balance between security and spontaneity? Finally, we wrap up with one heck of a weather report. Mom's neighbor Doug recounts the epic ice storm that left him snowed in, powered down, and questioning all his life choices. (Okay, maybe not all of them—but definitely his chainsaw strategy.) As always, Doug brings the trivia heat (and a little airline history), and we share some listener reflections that tie it all together. It's a jam-packed episode—from financial fear to frozen driveways—with a little Peruvian culinary adventure tossed in. DNA Genetics: Unique Strains for Hash, Amsterdam Beginnings, Legacy PartnershipWhen we say that today's guests are responsible for some of the biggest strains in the history of the plant, it's almost an understatement. We all grew up in the late 90s and early 2000s hearing about the cultural boom in Amsterdam, but these guys were living it.Blackleaf is blessed in the FSOTD studio by none other than Don and Aaron aka DNA Genetics, basically your OG's OGs, to discuss their migration to Amsterdam, running with legends like Sam the Skunkman and Dave Crockett, how they began breeding seeds in the early 2000s, coming back to the US, and the natural evolution of DNA Genetics that's turned them into a global brand with more hall-of-fame hitters than you can count. For the uninitiated, DNA Genetics is a renowned breeding company founded in Amsterdam in 2004, known for creating some of the industry's most iconic and award-winning strains. Some of these legendary strains include LA Confidential, Kosher Kush, and Tangie. DNA Genetics continues to innovate and expand with a strong global reputation, influencing the market through collaborations, seed distribution, and cutting-edge breeding techniques. You'll get to hear Don and Aaron dive deep into their ex-pat lives in Amsterdam and how they got their first building locked down, immediately started blowing massive tree, and had the cops bust down their doors on day 1. They soon partnered with a local coffee shop to grow and slang their creations, eventually having locals come in asking for seeds based on fire herb they blew just down the street. If you've ever heard of the “good old days” these were definitely them. You seriously can't count the number of unbelievable stories that are contained in this pod. Some of the other crazy tidbits that pop up during this episode include the DNA Genetics x Crockett Family Farms origin story and creating Tangie, how B-Real named the 24k strain, the LA Confidential story, how the Chocolope strain got its name on accident, growing seeds from Shantibaba himself, and how they got Barrington Levy to play an unforgettable High Times party in Amsterdam back in the day.Don and Aaron are undeniably living legends in the industry that continue to partner, expand, and take over the world with their renowned genetics. Look out for their upcoming releases with Sensi Seeds through their Breeding Grounds project, a global collaborative breeding project, the likes of which include Sherbinskis, Serge, Humboldt Seed Co., and more.Subscribe to our channel and the FSOTD.com site to keep up with other key players and enjoy conversations with trailblazers from the culture you can't find anywhere else. On today's episode, I talk to comics creator Daniel Warren Johnson. Originally from Massachusetts, Daniel started in the world of cartooning with his web-comic Space Mullet, which ran from 2012 to 2017. Since then, he's created a number of other series for Image including Murder Falcon, Do a Powerbomb and his latest The Moon is Following Us. In addition, Daniel is writing (and doing some of the art for) the new Transformers series for Skybound, and it's a delight! Originally from the Lower East Side, Jeffrey has bounced back and forth between his two loves comics and music for most of his professional life. As a cartoonist, Jeffrey's longest project was Fuff, which he wrote and drew from 2004 to 2020. He also created Revelations in the Wink of an Eye (My Insane Musings on Watchmen, from Conspiracies to Stupidities), and his most recent project is called Statics, which he started writing and drawing in 2022. As a musician, Jeffrey began as part of the New York antifolk scene that would play at the SideWalk Cafe in the 1990s. He released his first album When Madman Was Good - Version One in 1997, and four years later he was signed to Rough Trade, who released his first "official" album The Last Time I Did Acid I Went Insane. I don't do this work in optimism. I do it in hope”, Braver Angels President David Blankenhorn tells our podcast. “If we're going to have any chance to fix this and save our country, this is what needs to be done.”Soon after the tumultuous 2016 election Braver Angels sprung to life— co-founded by David, Bill Doherty and David Lapp. Two years after its founding this nationwide volunteer-led citizen movement had its first convention attended by 72 conservative and 72 liberal delegates. Last summer, more than 750 reds and blues were at the Braver Angels national convention in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The work continues every day all across America. We are releasing this repeat episode of our 2024 interview with David, recorded at Braver Angels offices in New York.
