Join Bill Nowicki as he delves into the compelling life of Patrick Roche—a submariner shaped by family tradition, personal responsibility, and decades of experience beneath the waves. From growing up in a Navy family to serving on both diesel boats and missile submarines, Patrick shares intimate reflections on family, service, resilience, and camaraderie in the US Navy's Silent Service. ### Highlights & Key Points **[00:00:00] - Beginnings in Groton & Naval Heritage** - Patrick grew up in Groton, Connecticut, with his father serving on submarines. - Graduated high school in 1965; influenced by his father's Navy career. - Joined the Navy after moving to San Diego (“I guess that's where I got the…”) - Family tradition: Patrick and his father served together on the USS Ronquil (SS-396), completing three WestPac deployments to Japan and Vietnam. **[00:03:00] - Life Aboard with Family** - Served with his father but led separate lives aboard; father was a chief quartermaster. - Never faced negative bias due to his father's position. Liberty meant different things for each—dad to the chief's club, Patrick and friends to the beach. **[00:05:00] - Family Life & Responsibility** - Married at age 18, became a father early. - Now the proud father of four daughters, eight grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren. - Emphasizes responsibility and “growing up quickly” as a driving force behind his life choices. **[00:09:00] - Naval Career & Historic Moments** - Started as a fireman apprentice with a guaranteed school for submariners. - Went from diesel to nuclear ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs), including the USS Theodore Roosevelt (SSBN-600). **[00:12:00] - Life and Duties on Submarines** - Served as an interior communications electrician (“IC man”), specializing as a gyro technician (explains the importance of gyros for navigation and missile launches). - Patrolled with the George Bancroft (SSBN-643); recalls the predictability of SSBN rotations—three months on, three months off. **[00:13:00] - Homecomings & Family Dynamics** - Kept family routines stable by letting his wife handle finances and household matters. - No issues adjusting to or from life at sea; credits strong partnership with his wife. **[00:15:00] - Submarine Evolutions & Technological Changes** - Comments on advancements from older boats to modern fast attacks and Virginia-class submarines. - Describes watchstanding: battle helmsman responsibilities, auxiliary duties, and the unique experience of bunking arrangements. **[00:19:00] - Challenges & Close Calls** - Survived a major flooding incident on the Roosevelt due to a head valve left open during snorkeling—highlights the ever-present dangers of submarine duty (“…we were down at 80-90 feet with the head valve open…”). **[00:20:00] - Advancement, Brotherhood & Initiations** - Rose through the ranks to Chief in 12 years; shares stories of chief initiation rites. - Reminisces about camaraderie, qualification processes, and the support systems in place—especially as a “legacy” submariner. **[00:24:00] - Civilian Career & Life After Service** - Transitioned to civilian roles with NAVSEA (Supervisor Shipbuilding), working in San Diego, New Orleans, and Bath, Maine. - Reflects on moving frequently for assignments, supervising ship construction. **[00:25:00] - Retirement & Reflections** - Currently resides in Gales Ferry, Connecticut, after retiring 10 years ago. - Considers returning to Maine for its beauty and tranquility. - Stresses the importance of staying in touch with Navy friends and the legacy of the submarine community. **[00:27:00] - The Holland Club & Submarine Brotherhood** - Member of the US Submarine Veterans' Holland Club—honoring 50+ years of qualification. - Describes the meaning of these traditions and the enduring bonds among submariners. **[00:29:00] - Lasting Partnerships** - Acknowledges the unwavering support of his wife, Barbara, throughout their 60 years of marriage. - Offers closing reflections on the rewards of naval service and maintaining life-long friendships. --- ### Notable Quotes: - “I had a responsibility and had to do it.” - “People treated you a lot different, too, when you're not dink (delinquent in qualifications).” - “I just enjoyed being on the boats—wouldn't trade it for anything.” - “She [his wife] is a winner. Sixty years coming up in December.” --- ### Listen For: - Insights into multi-generational Navy life (00:00:00–00:04:00) - Early marriage and parenting in the military (00:05:00–00:07:00) - Historic submarine incidents (00:09:00–00:10:00) - Submarine technology and daily operations (00:12:00–00:16:00) - The legendary Holland Club tradition (00:27:00) --- ### Closing **Want to hear more voices from beneath the waves? Interview by Angela CroudaceWhen Cursed hit number seven on the Spotify global charts, Paleface Swiss didn't just make a statement — they detonated it into the metal world. For guitarist Yannick Lehmann, the milestone still feels surreal. "It's unbelievable. We're completely DIY, no label, nothing — so to see that kind of success is mind-blowing," he says.Formed in 2018 as a local Swiss act, Paleface Swiss quickly built momentum in the hardcore beatdown scene before COVID shut the world down. Instead of stalling, the band doubled down, writing two albums and teasing songs online. Their audience was ready and hungry by the time live shows returned.Switzerland may be known for peace and neutrality, but Paleface Swiss are proud to represent the country's heavier side. "We love being the hardest band from our country," Yannick laughs. Yet the journey wasn't straightforward. Yannick initially joined as a studio guitarist, unsure about committing full-time. Fast forward to 2025, and he's now a full-time musician, having traded carpentry for crushing riffs. With its raw, live-ready sound, Cursed was born under sunny skies in Spain's Canary Islands, with palm trees, a pool, and nightly darts championships. "We had the time of our lives making it," Yannick recalls. "When we write, we write to play live — raw and powerful." That live energy translates into ferocious shows, whether it's sweaty clubs or on massive festival stages.Australian fans, he says, match the wild energy of U.S. crowds, with memories of wheelchair crowd-surfing standing out. This September, the band returns to Australia, bringing friends and early inspirations Nasty along for the ride — a full-circle moment for a band heavily inspired by them in their formative years.Paleface Swiss' Influences range from metal titans Judas Priest and Iron Maiden to Slipknot, hardcore heavyweights, and even dubstep and hip-hop. That genre-blending spirit gives Cursed unexpected textures without losing its bone-crushing core.Off stage, Yannick stays grounded, valuing personal connections with fans over rock-star distance. And while a mandatory stint in Swiss military service looms after the tour, there's minimal downtime in sight. "We never rest," he says. "There's always something to do."With their relentless drive and genre-defying edge, Paleface Swiss aren't just rewriting the rules for heavy music in Switzerland; they're smashing them to pieces globally. This Aussie run of shows is one you don't wanna miss! Tickets: https://thephoenix.au/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

In this episode, the sisters give their first Book Club update on The Lies of Lena by Kylie Snow. We've read the first half, and we're spilling all the tea on what we liked, what we didn't, and what we're dying to find out next.Meanwhile, Sam confesses her newest obsession: sports romances (spomance, anyone?), before we take a full plunge into the world of Rebecca Yarros's Empyrean series. We're talking all things Violet and Xaden—who's suspicious, who we're side‑eyeing, and who we desperately need more backstory on. Will Sam ever read Onyx Storm? Did anyone else get a book hangover as bad as ours after finishing this series? And because we can't stay on track, we also take a nostalgic detour into early 2000s Mandy Moore and end up in an unexpected deep dive on Chesleigh's reaction to the last episode of The Last of Us.If you're ready for bookish chaos, sisterly hot takes, and a whole lot of romantasy fangirling, this episode is for you!

In today's episode I talk about the reality of how fresh starts, and endings, present in our lives (it's never neat and tidy like in a book or movie!) and how to nurture ourselves through these changes. I offer a "phase in - phase out" ritual to help us cleanse our life of what we no longer want - and bring in the new beginning we are craving. I also go off on a little tangent (again) about how we need to stop doing the toxic bypassing thing about the Death card and allow ourselves to acknowledge endings. Pass the Baton: Empowering Students in Music Education, a Podcast for Music Teachers
In Episode 93 of the Pass the Baton podcast, co-hosts Kathryn Finch and Theresa Hoover kick off Season 5 with a timely conversation about setting up music classrooms with intention from day one. Drawing on their diverse teaching backgrounds—Kathryn in elementary general music and Theresa transitioning to a new role in higher education—they explore practical strategies for creating an environment where students feel seen, heard, and empowered. From classroom design and student centers to collaborative expectations and learner-driven activities, they emphasize the importance of fostering independence, creativity, and connection.Throughout the episode, Kathryn and Theresa revisit foundational ideas from their book Pass the Baton: Empowering All Music Students, including student voice, choice, ownership, and authentic music-making. They offer tangible suggestions teachers can implement right away, such as using students' names, incorporating creativity early on, and inviting students to share what they want to learn. Whether you're a veteran or just starting out, this episode will inspire you to be more intentional in your planning and build a student-centered learning environment from the very beginning.Looking to introduce improvisation during the first few weeks of school? And, He and His followers led and modeled how he intended for church to be lived out. Rather than the latest church growth book or contextually-based model, it is time to return to the ways Jesus intended for His Church to be lived out as seen in the example of the Early Church. Rethinking Church: From Traditional to Transformative - A Journey of Rediscovery In this session, the speaker shares his 15-year journey of founding and developing Church Project. Growing up in a small fundamental Southern Baptist church in Tyler, Texas, he initially misunderstood the gospel's breadth. Through years of college, internships, and pastoral work, he grappled with his frustrations and God's calling. After leaving traditional church settings, he started Church Project with a mission to return to the church's original intent. The session dives into the importance of decentralizing from primary places and priests, distributing pastoral leadership, and fostering diverse discipleship communities. Through biblical references, especially Titus chapter one, the speaker explains the foundational elements needed to create effective and healthy church communities. Join this transformative discussion that challenges conventional ecclesiology and aims to shape a more inclusive, decentralized, and dynamic church model. Hey everyone, James Scully here, producer and host of Breaking Walls, the docu-podcast on the history of US Network Radio Broadcasting. I wanted to let you know about a new webinar I'm doing this Thursday July 17th, at 7PM on Orson Welles' early career of Orson Welles through the end of 1941. If you can't make it live this Thursday July 17th at 7PM, don't worry, I'll be emailing every person who registers a video of the webinar once it's over. Here's a link to register: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/orson-welles-career-part-1-from-boy-wonder-to-trouble-maker-webinar-tickets-1445315741289?aff=oddtdtcreator Some more information: Throughout the last one-hundred years of American entertainment, few people have gotten as strong a reaction as Orson Welles. A rare quadruple threat: writer, director, actor, producer, Welles found immense success on stage, in films, on television, and in radio. In fact, he took center stage in the United States on more than one occasion… and not always to a positive reaction, but always with pushing the creative envelope in mind. Welles managed to alienate the newspaper industry, the Hollywood studio system, and occasionally even the broadcasting networks, but he rarely had a door closed in his face. Welles was known to work himself to the bone, and party even harder. He had romances with some of the most famous and attractive women in the country, including Virginia Nicholson, Dolores del Rio, and Rita Hayworth. He was hailed as a genius, a charlatan, a magician, an incredible friend, an a***hole, a hard-driver, a steady worker, and a man who drank too much. Welles liked to joke that he began his career on top and spent the rest of his life working his way down. Such a strong-willed, creative person deserves an in-depth look. In Part 1: From Boy Wonder To Trouble Maker (1931-1941) we'll explore Welles' early life, through his explosion of success in the 1930s all the way to the end of 1941, complete with audio clips and highlights including: • Beginnings in Illinois and China — How they helped shape Orson • The Todd Seminary School — His first exposure to theater and Radio • Connections and Early Breaks — How his mentor Roger Hill, Thornton Wilder, Alexander Woollcott, and Katharine Cornell helped Orson get to Broadway • Orson meets John Houseman and Archibald MacLeish, and first appears on the March of Time • 1935-1937 — From the March of Time to the Columbia Workshop, and how Irvin Reis taught Orson how to create for radio • How the US Government shaped the opportunity for Orson to write, direct, and star in Les Misérables on the Mutual Broadcasting System in 1937 • The Shadow Knows! — Agnes Moorehead and Orson Welles' one season on The Shadow • The birth of the Mercury Theater on the Air as First Person singular. How its success led to the most infamous night in radio in October of 1938 • Mainstream success with Campbell's Soups • Orson goes to Hollywood, and signs the greatest autonomous film contract in history at 24 • Citizen Kane — How William Randolph Hearst and RKO shaped the film • Lady Esther Presents — Orson comes back to radio in the autumn of 1941 • Pearl Harbor Day and collaborating with Norman Corwin • How Joseph Cotton introduced Orson to Rita Hayworth Afterward, I'll do a Q&A — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged! Can't attend live? Not to worry! I'll be recording the event and sending the video out to all guests who register so you can watch it later. See you (virtually) there!

On today's episode, I talk to musician Daniel Littleton. Originally from Annapolis, MD, Daniel's first band The Hated was part of the first wave of hardcore/post-punk/emo in the 1980s. In 1991, Daniel and Elizabeth Mitchell began recording together as Ida. They released their first three albums on the formative indie label Simple Machines, and as the '90s progressed they became loosely associated with a wave of chamber pop bands. Their next five albums were released on labels like Polyvinyl and Tiger Style Records, and in the late aughts, the band went on hiatus. Recently though, they began performing again in support of Numero Group's 4-LP reissue of their fourth album Will You find Me.
