Gina Gershon is here to discuss her new memoir, AlphaPussy: How I Survived the Valley and Learned to Love My Boobs, creating the perfect breakfast cereal, how this new book came to fruition, similarities shared between cats and men, why some younger artists see a toughness in her they feel they can't harness themselves, writing a reflective book about being an independent, somewhat unparented child while caring for and then grieving for her mother, boxing with Bob Dylan and their enduring friendship, the gratitude she receives from fans inspired by her strong characters in Bound and Showgirls and rekindling her conflicted relationship with the latter in its thirtieth anniversary year, what's next for her, and much more.EVERY OTHER COMPLETE KREATIVE KONTROL EPISODE IS ONLY ACCESSIBLE TO PATREON SUPPORTERS STARTING AT $6/MONTH. It's one of the most savagely derided films of the entire 1990s -- a decade that had no shortage of bad films -- but Showgirls has undergone something of a metamorphosis over the past few decades, despite still being full-bore trashy campy pulp. Join me and my guest, author / podcaster / film critic Kristen Lopez (of The Wrap), as we discuss all sorts of stuff related to the infamous disaster. Continuing our series on the purported "bad movies" in cinematic history, we're covering Razzie nominee Showgirls! We've been fans of Paul Verhoeven around here for a while, so to see his name lambasted for a movie that is not nearly as bad as everyone would have you believe is something we will not stand for! We reevaluate this film and give it the respect it's due, while also documenting some of its flaws too. We're also drinking Lawson's Finest Liquids' Lager!Approximate timeline0:00-15:00 Intro15:00-25:00 Beer talk25:00-end ShowgirlsDifficult Films continues throughout the month of May!
While we polish up some brand-new episodes all about iconic movie needle-drops... we're resurfacing some classic episodes that tackled the same topic! Starting with this one, about the time Stanley Kubrick decided to score his sci-fi spectacular 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY with classical tracks — something he did against the advice of just about everybody, and to the detriment of at least two composers' mental and physical health. Guests include Kubrick's longtime executive producer Jan Harlan.SHOWGIRLS is now streaming on MUBI in the US, Canada, Australia and Latin America. On this special “From the Vault” episode of the podcast that wields films like deadly weapons, Jay and Mike hit pause on their usual cycle of cinematic punishment to dig into the archives and revisit a piece of Filmjitsu history. With many of the most infamous “bad movie” staples already covered during the show's original run, some titles have been left in limbo... until now. This week, the vault opens on Showgirls and listeners are taken back to 2010, where a much younger Mike, alongside original co-host John, tries to make sense of Paul Verhoeven's neon-drenched spectacle of excess. Along the way, the guys count down their Bottom Five Movie Dances, square off in a round of Matinee Deathmatch—naming films within a chosen theme until one host taps out—and then close things out with a pair of Staff Picks to cleanse the palate after all the cinematic carnage. Next week, the torment resumes, as Mike's revenge continues and Jay reports back on The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot as scheduled.
Content warning: Showgirls depicts sexual violence as a central theme, and this is discussed in the podcast. The podcast tackles Paul Verhoeven's misunderstood masterpiece Showgirls (1995), and celebration the singularity of Elizabeth Berkley's incredible performance as Nomi Malone, the eternal cowboy of America. And then we bring Sex Month to a close by doling out some expert sex advice. Next week (May 1, 2026): The Devil Wears Prada (2006)! Today on Too Opinionated, we're joined by actress, filmmaker, and Showgirls icon Rena Riffel. Best known for her role as Penny/Hope in the 1995 cult classic Showgirls, Rena was part of one of the most talked-about films in Hollywood history—one that went from controversy to becoming a massive cult phenomenon. Despite its initial reception, Showgirls exploded in popularity through home video, generating over $100 million in rentals and gaining a devoted global fanbase. Rena didn't just act in the film—she also contributed creatively, even having her own song featured in the movie. She later continued the legacy by writing, directing, and starring in:

Matt and Laci dive deep into Hellraiser (1987). Matt, a long-time fan of the movie, and Laci, a first-time viewer, discuss the film's production history and the life and philosophy of its creator, Clive Barker. They explore Barker's background, including his early work in theater, his time as a male escort, and his unique perspective on integrating explicit sexuality and body horror into his work. Two prior adaptations of his work led Barker to want to take tight control of a third adaptation, which meant he would need to direct it himself. And what an incredible feat the film is for a first-time filmmaker. 1WR tells that story, including how Barker recruited his longtime friend Doug Bradley to play the iconic role of Pinhead. Then, a long breakdown of the movie itself. How does it play for a first-time viewer? How well do its practical effects hold up? Do its themes make sense? Has any movie character ever hated their spouse as much as Julia hates Larry? And is Hellraiser as scary as we assumed it would be when we saw the VHS box in the video store as children? Is anything? Finally, Pinhead himself joins us to give some sex advice. Next week (April 24, 2026): SEX MONTH concludes with Paul Verhoeven's Showgirls (1995)! Actress Gina Gershon hadn't had what you'd call a traditional Hollywood career. So, it's no surprise that she's written a memoir with an in-your-face title. Alpha Pussy: How I Survived the Valley and Learned to Love My Boobs. Gershon says the alpha pussy part has something to do with the fact that she raises male cats. As a result of her roles in films like Bound and Showgirls, Gershon has become something of a gay icon. The actress has also impersonated Melania in sketches that appeared on Funny or Die. Now, Gershon is writing screenplays. We talk about breasts, ageism and stupid Hollywood executives. "Now What?' is produced with the help of Steve Zimmer, Lucy Little and Jackie Schwartz. Audio production is by Nick Ciavatta.
Over the past forty years, Gina Gershon has remained a beloved actress while constantly pushing herself as an artist, adding to her astonishing and diverse resumé. Since her small, breakout performance in Pretty in Pink, Gershon has been best known for her roles in movies (including Bound, Showgirls, Face/Off, The Insider) and television (including Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Riverdale, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Assassin), but her career, and community, began as a musician and dancer. She performed at Carnegie Hall, recorded albums, and toured the United States, playing her jaw harp with Sting, Laurie Anderson, Joan Baez, Paul Simon, and Herbie Hancock. While she has not yet performed with her close friend Bob Dylan, they were sparring partners when Gershon took up boxing. On the stage, Gershon has worked with David Mamet, and performed in Sam Mendes's Cabaret and the Tony Award-winning Boeing-Boeing. In 2007, Gershon took on a new artistic practice, publishing the children's book Camp Creepy Time with her brother Dann. She later released her first work of nonfiction, In Search of Cleo: How I Found My Pussy and Lost My Mind, the true story of Gershon's search for her runaway cat. Gershon's newest book AlphaPussy: How I Survived the Valley and Learned to Love My Boobs, looks back at how she learned to survive and thrive in Hollywood, tracing her brilliant and unique career to find cautionary tales, turning points, and everything in between. On April 3, 2026, Gina Gershon came to the Sydney Goldstein Theater for an onstage conversation with Gina Pell, Content Chief of The What.
We talk to Gershon about the book, working with Robert Altman on The Player and her battles with Paul Verhoeven while filming Showgirls.

Chaz and AJ played audio from the air traffic control communications just before the crash at LaGuardia. One of the pilots in the clip really stood out for their demeanor during the tragedy. (0:00) A Florida man with a strange name headlined Dumb Ass News, for the appropriate crime he was fouund guilty of. (10:15) More the Justin Timberlake DUI audio, this time focusing on his "friend" that did not help one bit. (13:57) Mike from Long Island called Chaz and AJ this morning to talk about his two cousins being on the plane that crashed at LaGuardia. Thankfully, they will be OK, even through their seats were extremely close to the front of the plane. (23:14) Brian Foley, former Hartford Police Detective, was on the phone with Chaz and AJ to go over the Justin Timberlake DUI bodycam footage with them. Plus, some of the celebrity encounters he's had throughout his career in Hartford. (34:53) Gina Gershon was on the phone with Chaz and AJ this morning to talk about her new book, AlphaPussy. Two Verhoeven in a row! This week we are joined by Lily Eagla to discuss Verhoeven's notorious cult classic "Showgirls," a movie that stalled the career of Saved By The Bell alum Elizabeth Berkley before going on to be recognized as an important piece of satire ahead of its time. We discuss the uncompromising examination of Las Vegas, the way in which it represents the predatory and exploitative nature of the capitalist system, the dehumanization of sex workers, and try to understand the nature of the film's failure when it was released and why it has gone on to become an important piece of cultural criticism.Guest LinksLily on InstagramLily on TiktokLily on YoutubeLily on SubstackLeft of the Projector LinksOfficial WebsiteLeft of the Projector on LetterboxdLeft of the Projector on InstagramLeft of the Projector on PatreonLeft of the Projector on ThreadlessHost LinksEvan's LetterboxdBill's InstagramBill's LetterboxdWard's InstagramWard's Letterboxd

We're taking it easy as we head into this busy Oscar weekend at Breakfast All Day. Here's what we reviewed in our latest episode: PROJECT HAIL MARY. This is a super-early review of the Ryan Gosling-in-space comedy, which doesn't even come out until March 20. But there's so much expectation for it, we wanted to share our throughts as soon as we could. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller direct from a script by Drew Goddard, based on the Andy Weir novel. In theaters next weekend. IT'S DOROTHY! This documentary provides a fresh and clever perspective on the character of Dorothy Gale and the cultural significance of "The Wizard of Oz" in all its incarnations. Writer-director-editor Jeffrey McHale is a friend of ours (we interviewed him here about his "Showgirls" documentary with the brilliant title "You Don't Nomi"), so we didn't give this a number, but genuinely liked the movie so much that we wanted to tell you about it. Streaming on Peacock. MOVIE NEWS LIVE! Our last one before the Academy Awards. Lots to discuss including Timothée Chalamet angering the ballet and opera communities, a sequel for "KPop Demon Hunters," the George Michael "Faith Tour" movie, a Stewie spin-off from "Family Guy" and more. Join us on Fridays at Noon Pacific at our YouTube channel. A few things to put on your calendar: Join us Sunday for our LIVE Oscar Watch Party! We'll be at our channel starting at 330pm Pacific and we'll be hanging out for the whole show. This is always so much fun every year, so come and share your thoughts. Then come back Monday morning for our Oscars Reaction Live Chat! In case you can't make it Sunday night, or you just want to go over everything that happened, we'll be back at our channel at 9am Pacific. And on Saturday, March 21, we're showing "After Hours" at the Gardena Cinema. If you've never seen this Martin Scorsese comedy classic and you're in the LA area, this is a great opportunity. Doors open at 6pm, we'll be there for a little meet and greet, and then the film will start at 7. Tickets are available here. Support your local arthouse theater!

ACOFAE Podcast Presents: The Raven Scholar: "Everything is important!" When was the last time you were able to really sink your teeth into a fantasy? When was the last time you were really and truly surprised by a plot twist? Be honest. It may have been a while. The Raven Scholar is something that you can really sit with and reread. Laura Marie reread it 4x for this episode! Welcome to a fantasy that is enriched by the audio experience, that has footnotes, and contains a plot that is so expansive and detailed that even after 4x, Laura Marie is sure there are things she's missing. A book that has haunting the narrative down to a tee, The Raven Scholar combines plot lines into a story that has religion and belief warring with ambition and scheming. Truly, The Raven Scholar is a delight from start to finish. Jessica Marie was able to read through the book once, and the differences in reading experiences makes the conversations delightful.
