Asimismo, analizan algunos de los giros de guion más sorprendentes de la serie, como el inesperado romance entre Zack y Jessie, que rompió temporalmente los esquemas de las parejas tradicionales del instituto. El segundo bloque del espacio se consagra por entero a Punky Brewster, la serie preferida de Esmeralda Ruiz, quien admite haber diseñado esta sección estival con el único propósito de rememorar esta icónica producción de los ochenta. La historia de la pequeña huérfana acogida por un bondadoso pero huraño fotógrafo logró conmover a los espectadores gracias a la química entre la joven Soleil Moon Frye y el veterano actor George Gaynes. Gaynes, muy popular también por su papel del despistado comandante Lassard en la saga cinematográfica Loca Academia de Policía, encarnaba a Henry Warnimont con una entrañable mezcla de brusquedad y ternura. Los colaboradores coinciden en que, bajo su apariencia de comedia infantil, Punky Brewster abordaba con gran valentía diversos temas sociales de enorme complejidad para el público menudo. Asuntos como el abandono de menores, las dificultades de los procesos de adopción, el acoso escolar o el valor de la amistad incondicional se trataban de manera directa y pedagógica. Tampoco se olvidan de Brandon, el fiel perro de la protagonista, que se convirtió en un personaje clave de la serie y en objeto de deseo de toda una generación de niños que ansiaban tener una mascota similar. Para concluir, el análisis destaca cómo el éxito de la serie original propició la creación de una versión animada titulada It's Punky Brewster, que incorporaba elementos fantásticos como el duende Glomer, y un reciente intento de resurrección en el año 2021 con una secuela donde Soleil Moon Frye volvía a interpretar a su icónico personaje, ya en su etapa madura y como madre de familia. He also talks about his exploration into the murder of Addison Verrill, a Variety reporter in NYC, who was killed by a man he picked up in a bar named Paul Bateson. Released in 1988, Red Heat arrived right in the thick of the buddy-cop boom, pairing Arnold Schwarzenegger's granite-faced Soviet policeman with Jim Belushi's wisecracking Chicago detective. Directed, co-written and co-produced by Walter Hill, the film sits somewhere between Cold War curiosity, action thriller, and odd-couple comedy, with Hill bringing his usual muscular, stripped-down approach to men glaring at each other near explosions. The cast also includes Peter Boyle, Ed O'Ross, Laurence Fishburne, Gina Gershon and Brion James, which is a very 1988 way of saying, “Yes, this will involve shouting in warehouses.”Production took the film across Chicago, Los Angeles and Budapest, with Budapest doubling for Moscow, while the filmmakers were also granted approval to shoot establishing material in Moscow's Red Square — noted by the AFI Catalog as a first for an American feature production. The film was released by TriStar Pictures on 17 June 1988, opening to just over $8.1 million domestically and finishing with around $35 million at the US box office.   Today on Too Opinionated, we're joined by actress, filmmaker, and Showgirls icon Rena Riffel. Best known for her role as Penny/Hope in the 1995 cult classic Showgirls, Rena was part of one of the most talked-about films in Hollywood history—one that went from controversy to becoming a massive cult phenomenon. Despite its initial reception, Showgirls exploded in popularity through home video, generating over $100 million in rentals and gaining a devoted global fanbase. Rena didn't just act in the film—she also contributed creatively, even having her own song featured in the movie. She later continued the legacy by writing, directing, and starring in:

Matt, a long-time fan of the movie, and Laci, a first-time viewer, discuss the film's production history and the life and philosophy of its creator, Clive Barker. They explore Barker's background, including his early work in theater, his time as a male escort, and his unique perspective on integrating explicit sexuality and body horror into his work.  Two prior adaptations of his work led Barker to want to take tight control of a third adaptation, which meant he would need to direct it himself. And what an incredible feat the film is for a first-time filmmaker. 1WR tells that story, including how Barker recruited his longtime friend Doug Bradley to play the iconic role of Pinhead.  Then, a long breakdown of the movie itself. Actress Gina Gershon hadn't had what you'd call a traditional Hollywood career. So, it's no surprise that she's written a memoir with an in-your-face title. Alpha Pussy: How I Survived the Valley and Learned to Love My Boobs. Gershon says the alpha pussy part has something to do with the fact that she raises male cats. As a result of her roles in films like Bound and Showgirls, Gershon has become something of a gay icon. The actress has also impersonated Melania in sketches that appeared on Funny or Die. Now, Gershon is writing screenplays. We talk about breasts, ageism and stupid Hollywood executives. "Now What?' is produced with the help of Steve Zimmer, Lucy Little and Jackie Schwartz. Over the past forty years, Gina Gershon has remained a beloved actress while constantly pushing herself as an artist, adding to her astonishing and diverse resumé. Since her small, breakout performance in Pretty in Pink, Gershon has been best known for her roles in movies (including Bound, Showgirls, Face/Off, The Insider) and television (including Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Riverdale, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Assassin), but her career, and community, began as a musician and dancer. She performed at Carnegie Hall, recorded albums, and toured the United States, playing her jaw harp with Sting, Laurie Anderson, Joan Baez, Paul Simon, and Herbie Hancock. While she has not yet performed with her close friend Bob Dylan, they were sparring partners when Gershon took up boxing. On the stage, Gershon has worked with David Mamet, and performed in Sam Mendes's Cabaret and the Tony Award-winning Boeing-Boeing. In 2007, Gershon took on a new artistic practice, publishing the children's book Camp Creepy Time with her brother Dann. She later released her first work of nonfiction, In Search of Cleo: How I Found My Pussy and Lost My Mind, the true story of Gershon's search for her runaway cat. (10:15) More the Justin Timberlake DUI audio, this time focusing on his "friend" that did not help one bit. (13:57) Mike from Long Island called Chaz and AJ this morning to talk about his two cousins being on the plane that crashed at LaGuardia. Thankfully, they will be OK, even through their seats were extremely close to the front of the plane. (23:14) Brian Foley, former Hartford Police Detective, was on the phone with Chaz and AJ to go over the Justin Timberlake DUI bodycam footage with them. Plus, some of the celebrity encounters he's had throughout his career in Hartford. (34:53) Gina Gershon was on the phone with Chaz and AJ this morning to talk about her new book, AlphaPussy. This is a super-early review of the Ryan Gosling-in-space comedy, which doesn't even come out until March 20. This documentary provides a fresh and clever perspective on the character of Dorothy Gale and the cultural significance of "The Wizard of Oz" in all its incarnations. Writer-director-editor Jeffrey McHale is a friend of ours (we interviewed him here about his "Showgirls" documentary with the brilliant title "You Don't Nomi"), so we didn't give this a number, but genuinely liked the movie so much that we wanted to tell you about it.
