Send us a textWe start Season Five off with a monster album, Eat a Peach, by the Allman Brothers Band. Released in 1972, it is a double album and simultaneously their 3rd studio album and their 2nd Live album. The Allman Brothers Band were perhaps the first "Southern Rock" band, but they were so much more than that. Steeped in the blues, the brothers Duane and Greg actually had careers as session musicians playing everything from soul to psychedelic folk. Their jams were inspired by jazz improvisations by John Coltrane and they had an uncanny ability to "jam" and harmonize simultaneously. Eat A Peach, composed of both live and studio tracks, is ultimately is a celebration of the life of founding member and reluctant leader Duane Allman, who died during the making of this album in a tragic motorcycle accident. Somehow the band found the will to carry on. Eat a Peach showcases this influential band at the peak of their powers, as both songwriters and musicians.Visit us at www.tappingvinyl.com.

We have failed to teach our children and our culture the creation mandates: "God blessed them; and God said to them, 'Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth'" (Gen. 1:28). We need to restore the faith that believes God's commands, particularly His creation mandates regarding fruitfulness, are for all ages, for man's good, and His glory.***Out of Our Minds Podcast: Pastors Who Say What They Think. Brent Midland's First Show 45 Years Ago Today  RIP: Dickey Betts, A True BrotherLarry Mishkin  begins with a discussion about the significance of April 20th (420 Day) and reminisces about a Grateful Dead concert from 45 years ago on April 22nd, 1979, which marked Brent Midland's first show with the band. He delves into Brent Midland's impact on the band and his musical contributions. He also touches on recent concerts by Phish and the Sam Grisman Project.Later, there's a surprising revelation that Tucker Carlson is a Grateful Dead fan, and it reflects on the diverse fanbase of the band. Larry also mourns the passing of Dicky Betts, a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, highlighting his musical legacy and contributions to Southern Rock. Additionally, he mentions Betts' collaborations with the Grateful Dead and concludes with a tribute to him.Vangst Jobs 2024 Jobs Report  - https://www.vangst.com/2024-jobs-report Grateful DeadSpartan StadiumSan Jose CAApril 22, 1979 (45 years ago)Grateful Dead Live at Spartan Stadium, San Jose State U on 1979-04-22 : Free Borrow & Streaming : Internet Archive Brent Mydland's first show INTRO:                                Jack Straw                                                Track #1                                                0:07 – 1:41                 Brent in on the harmonizing from the first song  SHOW No. 1:                    Minglewood Blues                                                Track #6                                                2:14 – 3:57                 Brent's first solo! Music News: PhishSam GrismanDickey Betts                                                 SHOW No. 2:                    Promised Land                                                Grateful Dead w.Dickey Betts and Butch Trucks                                                June 10, 1973                                                RFK Stadium                                                Track No. 26                                                2:28 - end                                                Grateful Dead Live at Robert F. In the case of “Passenger,” the added quirk is thrown in of someone other than the composer singing the song. So we have a song written by Peter Monk, with music by Phil Lesh, and sung by Bob Weir and Donna Jean Godcheaux on Terrapin Station.Lesh wrote the song, admittedly based on Fleetwood Mac's riff for their song “Station Man.” Lesh said, in an interview in Dupree's Diamond News, “What's weird about that song is I sort of did it as a joke. It's a take on a Fleetwood Mac tune called ‘Station Man.' I just sort of sped it up and put some different chord changes in there..."Monk's lyrics for the song have been the source of quite a bit of debate. There are quite a few alternate hearings, especially around the line: “Terrible, the only game in town,” which many, including myself, hear as “Parable, the only game in town.”“Passenger” was first performed on May 15, 1977, at the St. Louis Arena in St. Louis (released on the May 1977 box set). It was performed regularly through1981, with its final performance on December 27, 1981, at the Oakland Auditorium.Terrapin Station, which included the studio version of the song, was released on July 27, 1977. “Passenger” was released as a single, with “Terrapin Station” on the B side.Great tune.  I'm sorry I never got to hear it live.Bootleg album:  Live at Moe's Place – open with it, used to listen to it at good friends' Dinie and Janet's place in Ann Arbor.  Really jams.                 Played 99 times                First:  May 15, 1977 at St. Louis Arena, St. Louis, MO, USA            Last:  December 27, 1981 at Oakland Civic Auditorium, Oakland, CA  MJ News SHOW No. 4:                    Shakedown Street                                                Track #24                                                5:00 – 6:41                 Brent with music fills and vocals  ENCORE:                          Blue Sky                                                Eat A Peach                                                Blue Sky (youtube.com)                                                3:00 – end College acquaintance and fellow Deadhead used to say that whenever she listened to this album, she would play Blue Sky twice and THEN play the album all the way through picking up a third Blue Sky.  I tried it and discovered she was right on about that. .Produced by PodConx Deadhead Cannabis Show - https://podconx.com/podcasts/deadhead-cannabis-showLarry Mishkin - https://podconx.com/guests/larry-mishkinRob Hunt - https://podconx.com/guests/rob-huntJay Blakesberg - https://podconx.com/guests/jay-blakesbergSound Designed by Jamie Humiston - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamie-humiston-91718b1b3/Recorded on Squadcast

Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this totally '80s installment marks my 89th episode of VideoFuzzy, reporting the progress I've made in cataloging more than 3,000 VHS transfers and digital recordings. This installment, titled "Forever Freestyle," celebrates probably the broadest timeline covered by my classic and current collections, featuring material from every decade between 1930 and 2020. My Fuzzy Feature highlights the 1980s miniseries, network series and the 2009 reboot of "V," including a contemporary clip from my "TV is the New Reading" podcast. I track some Cross Connections through the casts of the original and the reboot such as Jossverse connections to Morena Baccarin, Alan Tudyk and Gina Torres and original series connections through Michael Mantell and Richard T. Jones. A flashback episode of "My Name is Earl" featured an appearance by long-acknowledged Golden Thread Beau Bridges as Carl Hickey. And several arterial connections showed up in "Mercy" including Michelle Trachtenberg, Jane Mulgrew and Elisabeth Moss; "Boston Legal" including Jane Lynch, Megan Mullally and Prime Connector Stephen Tobolowsky with William Shatner, Rene Auberjonois and Armin Shimerman. In my Classic Collection, cataloging discs 1476 through 1500, I encountered an ad for a two-disc set packed with '80s dance hits called "Forever Freestyle." You can see the ad here: https://youtu.be/ZDNlUl706Ls Based on finding it in my collection I added the songs in that compilation to my music collection. Also, I found one of two German-language episodes of "Monty Python's Fliegende Zirkus," the Bravo rebroadcast of "Six Feet Under" episode "Eat a Peach," and a Lexus ad featuring some brilliant stage-management tagged "The safest accident is the one that never happens." You can see that one here: https://youtu.be/Xw3-hOE3l8M Plus comments on "Hamlet 2," "The Prisoner," "The Ninth Gate," "CATS," "The Riches," "Fringe," Ellen hosting the Oscars, a documentary on the 2008 presidential election called "By the People: The Election of Barack Obama" and the 1952 movie "Desk Set." In my Current Collection I talk about the "BoJack Horseman" finale and connections between that and the final season of "Six Feet Under." Also, comments on "Quantumania," "Soup to Nuts," "Michael Shayne, Private Eye" and the third season premiere of "Only Murders in the Building." In What I've Been Watching, comments on "Elemental," "Barbie" and "Grace & Frankie," as well as "Project Runway" and "Crime Scene Kitchen." And in my streaming selections, I took in the series premiere of Nathan Pyle's "Strange Planet" on Apple TV. Fun show! Author Andrew Wild returns to the podcast to talk about his brand new book “The Allman Brothers Band: Every Album, Every Song”! The story of the Allman Brothers band is one of triumph followed by tragedy followed by a remarkable comeback in the wake of that tragedy. As it's stated in the book's overview: "The music of the Allman Brothers is the pure distillation of the four main ingredients of American music: blues, rock, jazz and country. At their best, they transcended genre: they just were." In this episode, Andrew talks with me about the legendary Duane Allman, his little brother Gregg Allman, who, along with his bandmates Dickey Betts, Butch Trucks and Jaimoe carried on in the wake of Duane's passing and shortly after bassist Berry Oakley's death. It wasn't easy. They went through a rough period in the late 70s into the 80s before marking their comeback in the late 80s, a comeback that sustained right up until the death of Gregg and Butch. We'll cover the legendary albums including ‘At Fillmore East' and ‘Eat A Peach' and the later members of the band Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes, who helped rejuvenate Gregg and his bandmates in the late 90s into the 2000s.Purchase a copy of "The Allman Brothers Band: Every Album, Every Song" in the UK through Burning Shed HERE and in the US through Amazon HEREListen to a playlist of the music discussed in this episode HERE Visit The Big House Museum's website HERE Visit the Booked On Rock Website HEREWatch exclusive video segments from the Booked On Rock podcast HERE Follow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOK TWITTER INSTAGRAM TIKTOK Support Your Local Bookstore! In this episode, we discuss one of the best albums for warm, sunny, Southern vibes: the Allman Brothers Band's 'Eat A Peach,' which was released 50 years ago last week! There weren't as many great albums released in 1972 as there were in 1971, so these 50th anniversary episodes will be fewer and farther between this year, but this is definitely one worth celebrating...Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/dr.cropper)

Einige Songs entstanden im New Yorker Musiktheater "The Fillmore East". _____ Über diese Songs vom Album “Eat A Peach” wird im Podcast gesprochen: 11:17 Mins - "Ain't Wastin‘ Time No More" 15:27 Mins - Les Brers In A Minor" 18:43 Mins - "Melissa" 23:40 Mins - "Mountain Jam" 30:23 Mins - "One Way Out" 36:08 Mins - "Blue Sky" _____ Über diese Songs wird außerdem im Podcast gesprochen: 25:18 Mins - "There Is A Mountain" von Donovan _____ Links zum Podcast: Englischer Wikipedia Artikel mit vielen Links zu den Songs https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eat_a_Peach#Personnel Deutscher Wikipedia Artikel: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eat_a_Peach The Allman Brothers Band - One Way Out - At Fillmore East 1971 (HQ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJ9twEldw_M Duane Allman Story https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggNE5Iw27d0 Allman Brothers YouTube Cannel https://www.youtube.com/c/allmanbrothersmv ____ Ihr wollt mehr Podcasts wie diesen? Anger, depression, and massive success… For David Chang, every restaurant he opens feels like life or death. That mentality is a major reason why he’s one of the biggest figures in the restaurant world today. He combines highbrow and lowbrow, mashing cuisines together to create dishes that aren’t fusions — they’re collisions. If you know him from TV, you probably think of him as an affable, goofy guy who loves to eat. But in this conversation and in his new memoir, Eat A Peach, he opens up about his decades-long struggles with anger and depression, his relationship with his father, and the role it’s all played in his success. Did you hear Columbus Brewing Co.'s taproom finally opened? We discuss that (again). We also tease a few notable happenings this upcoming week in the world of local beer. Namely that Wolf's Ridge Brewing Co. and Land-Grant Brewing Co. both will hold anniversary parties this weekend and, in a bid to make the festivities both more convenient and safer for fans, the Short North Trolley Co. will be shutting patrons between both sites for free that day. This week's episode also is the introduction of Hayleigh Colombo, the newest member of the Columbus Business First team (and thusly News & Brews as well), who sits in and shares her love of cider and several stories of Indiana's quirky alcohol laws.

At the cabin, a Mullein has seeded itself in one of my beds and I’m letting it grow.    (I was touring gardens in Washington DC a few years ago and the garden had a section for Mulleins. It was so pretty.)   On more than one occasion, I have had to rescue it - to make sure that no one in the family pulled it or weed-whacked it. Now, there it stands; 6 feet tall, big leaves, soft as lamb's ears, and the yellow florets are just starting to pop out from the flower spike.   If you look closely at Mulleins, they have these little fine hairs on the very soft leaves. The purpose of those little fine hairs is to trap moisture from the air; to help the plant survive - even when there’s no water around.   Inside the leaf and the flower of Mullein, is a compound called mucilage. It’s a soothing property -  a soothing slime - that protects tissue when it comes into contact with it.  Herbalists use that mucilage to treat dry coughs; the mucilage reduces the acidity level in the esophagus which helps stop the cough reflex. Whenever I look at Mullein, I always think of Whitman’s charming thoughts on it.   Whitman wrote:   "The farmers, I find, think the Mullein a mean unworthy weed. But, I have grown to a fondness for it. Every object has its lesson, enclosing the suggestion of everything else —and lately I sometimes think all is consecrated for me in these hardy, yellow flower'd weeds.   As I come down the lane early in the morning, I pause before their soft wool-like fleece and stem and broad leaves, glittering with countless diamonds. Annually for three summers now, they and I have silently returned together; at such long intervals I stand or sit among them, musing [...] of my sane or sick spirit, here as near at peace as it can be."         Brevities   #OTD     On this day in 1745, Prince Charles Stuart plucked a white rose and placed it in his hat.   Charles got the nickname "Bonnie Prince Charlie."  Some have speculated, that the event sparked the significance of the Burnett rose - a white rose - because it became a celebrated symbol of Scotland.    Here’s a little poem about the white rose from Hugh MacDiarmid:   The rose of all the world is not for me. I want for my part Only the little white rose of Scotland. That smells sharp and sweet - and breaks the heart.           #OTD     Today in 1830, the first lawn Moore was invented by Edward Beard Budding.   Budding had adopted a machine that was used to remove the nap from wool.   Budding had been working part time at carpet mill and he got the idea when he was working there; watching that machine with the wool.   Budding apparently tested his machine at night, so that his neighbors wouldn’t be curious or make fun of him.   And, if you ever get the chance to go and see the Budding Museum of Gardening, it looks like a fun place to go. It shows mowers from all over the world.  There’s also a pruning exhibit. The museum is in England. Cute little museum.         #OTD       Today is the birthday of the botanist Jacob Weidenmann, who was born on this day in 1829 in Zürich Switzerland.   Weidenmann was a landscape architect. He came to the United States in 1856.  By 1861, he was named the first superintendent of parks for Hartford, Connecticut. When he was there, he designed the Bushnell Park in Cedar Hill cemetery.   By the 1870's, he was collaborating with Frederick Law Olmsted.   In 1871, Weidenmann published his very first book it was called Beautifying Country Homes. His work on the Cedar Hill Cemetery led him to write a book called Modern Cemeteries - where he actually talked about how to landscape memorial grounds.   After Weidenmann had finished designing in Hartford, he was asked to design the capital grounds in Des Moines.    When Weidenmann died, he was buried in a quiet corner of the cemetery he had designed in Connecticut. Today, Harvard awards the Weidenmann prize to the student who shows outstanding ability in landscape design.         #OTD    Today is National Eat a Peach Day.     Peaches are native to northwest China.    August is one of the months that peaches are harvested.   Thomas Jefferson had peaches growing at Monticello.   The scientific name for peaches is Persica.  The name Persica derives from the belief that peaches were from Persia - but they were actually from China.       Unearthed Words   “In June we picked the clover, And sea-shells in July: There was no silence at the door, No word from the sky. A hand came out of August And flicked his life away: We had not time to bargain, mope, Moralize, or pray.”   ― Cecil Day-Lewis, Overtures to Death and Other Poems         Today's book recommendation: Herbal Healing for Women by Rosemary Gladstar   This book is a favorite among women and female gardeners looking to utilize herbs for women’s health. Specifically, there are tons of great recipes in here and lots of useful information.    The book covers common disorders and the herbs that are effective for treating them. Gladstar shares how to select in-store herbs and then how to pair hundreds of herbal remedies.   I think what is especially helpful about this book is Rosemary‘s exclamation of the properties of herbs and then, not only how herbs are healing, but how they promote good health as well.   Rosemary is called the godmother of modern herbalism          Today's Garden Chore   Spruce up the ironwork in your garden.   The other day I was at a big box store looking for some pieces for my irrigation system, when I remembered to pick up some cans of white spray paint for my ironwork. I bought it to refresh a set of table and chairs I bought from a friend. It’s amazing how good it all looks with a fresh coat of paint.   For other ironwork that I want to keep with a more natural look, I will just get some clear coat and use that.   And if you’re doing a lot of spray painting (like I was with the tables and chairs), it makes sense to buy one of those little spray grip accessories that attach to the top of your spray paint cans. They minimize finger fatigue. They are called spray grips or contour grips - and you can find them at your big box hardware stores. They’re usually sold right by the paint cans. They are totally worth the investment.         Something Sweet  Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart   Here’s a an interesting story that was shared in the Montclair Times in 1903.   An amateur botanist and his friend were passing by a florist and they spied an elephant ear.   The botanist asked his friend, "Did you ever taste elephant ears?"   The companion said he never had.   The botanist answered this way:   "It’s a good thing for you - although it is an experience that will remain in your memory for a long time to come. I remember - oh, it seems like a hundred years back, yet the incident & fresh in my mind and as clear as crystal - when three boys were leaning across a wall looking at the plant in a garden. I was one of the boys -  and the other two were telling me what a sweet taste elephant leaves had. [...] One of the boys put a piece in his mouth - at least he pretended to - and I agreed to chew some also.   Well, persimmons are as sugar compared to the drawing and bitterness of the elephant leaf. For half an hour after I had put the bit of leaf into my mouth, I drank enough water to float a ship."   If you want to eat elephant ears, it's their tuber that's edible. The leaves and the stem are the most toxic parts of the plant.       Thanks for listening to the daily gardener, and remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

Recorded: 19 August, 2013Participants: Steve Harlow, Emory Holmes II, Jim "Jimmy The Peach" Aaron, Ruth Parson, Allan Ludwig.AudioDownload Mp3 Steve says he doesn't want to, "hog all the fun," of moderating the podcast. Artistically, he says he admires the directoral style of Andy Warhol, "turn on the camera.""And take a nap," Emory completes.Steve says he likes the awkward pauses and people fumbling for words, "that's the best part."Allan says he's in mid-coast Maine. Emory asks if he's been fishing? Allan says he's been photographing circles. He likes perfect circles, he thinks imperfect circles are grotesque.Jim suggests a theme of touchstones or starting points for this episode. What caused you to be a creative person? What Is your "pole star," your guide?Emory says he relies on the Blues. When he started reading Nietzsche. He was impressed by the wit, savagery, and generousity of his thinking. He thinks the Blues is comparable. Funny, tragic, violent, and full of shifting moods. He says every story he's written has drawn from that fountain of expectations."Our lives are tragic and we have the ability to bring some light, some texture to our time living here," Emory says. He relies on the Blues to inform him and give him a field of play.Jim asks if it is the "call and response" of Blues that Emory connects to.Emory says no, but when he gives a reading of his work, it is always fun to hear the audience give response. When he was on a press junket to Fort Smith, Arkansas, for the movie, "A Soldier's Story." reading a piece, he had written on one of the stars, Howard Rollins, who has in the audience punctuating Emory's lines with, "ah hums" and "well ahhs" like it was a church sermon. The call and response there was appropriate, but a surprise. Emory thinks the concision, the emotion, the storytelling of the Blues is his touchstone.Ruth says her beginnings as a writer was a story she wrote she was eight years of age. At that time, she was writing to, "hear what I was thinking and it hasn't changed, that's still why I write." Her interest in sculpture started with seeing Rodin's work at Stanford University. She was on her knees hearing the "Les Bourgeois de Calais" whisper.Les Bourgeois de Calais Musee RodinJim says he enjoyed Les Bourgeois de Calais at The Hirshhorn Museum Sculpture GardenBalzac at MOMA by dominotic, on FlickrRuth also learned from Rodin's waxes in San Francisco, at Legion of Honor, then saw some again in Paris, at Musee Rodin. Balzac was her favorite, "such a mountain of a man."Allan commends the sense of permanence in the placement of public sculpture in Washington, D.C., saying, each piece there, large or small is in a well considered environment. In New York City, there's so little land, they plopped these things down in tiny spots which spoil the effect of the sculpture. In NYC, the Parks Department thinks that public art is a burden, they rotate sculptures in and out. There was one of Andy Warhol in Union Square, but it's gone now.The Andy Monument, 17th & Broadway, NY, NYRegarding motivations, Allan says he remembers trying to draw a portrait in profile and having difficulty getting the nose in perspective. After a few erasures, multiple attempts at a correct nose came out, "crummy," he wore through the paper, was screaming, his mother said to him, "you should get some books on drawing and calm down." Although that may have been very good advice, Allan discovered a camera, "you don't have to do that," he says, "you just push the button and you get everything where it should be. Photography is very easy because it's all there at one time and you either like the result or you don't."Steve says because photography is easy to capture, it is tremendously difficult to take a great photo. As a child, he was with his photo-hobbyist, Dad in a home darkroom. He thought the enlarger, the image appearing in the developer was magical. He thinks the same magic can happen with digital images, he uses GIMP to further "develop" captured images. Because manipulating images is so easy, it's hard to make the art you want. Digital is difficult because of the unlimited possibilities.Brussels 1932 by Henri Cartier-BressonAllan says Andre Bresson, the first one out with a Leica shooting the, "decisive moment." Bresson saw photography as a temporal exercise, saw life flow past him and he needed to capture the most expressive moment. This part of photography remains difficult. When developing images, you want the processing to, "mostly leave the image alone," Allan says, "too many layers of Photoshop effects and it looks like cheap Surrealism."PHOTOBOT!: Surrealism Photoshop IIAllan said he was taking abstract photos a few years ago and found that some of the ones he took with his eyes closed were as good as those he took with his eyes open.Steve suggests that in cases like that, the decisive moment comes in the selection process, "which one of these 100 shots should I present?"Allan says, while there is always a need for that, he doesn't like to think about it too much, you get bogged down with a bunch of issues, he wants to get on the next thing. He sees the emotional power photographs generate. As a child, Jim said he had moments that supported his belief that he was different or alien. He saw the life around as shallow. He was interested in jazz. He heard jazz in the live improvisation on Eat A Peach. He admired the mastery, became interested in the masters in arts. He wishes we could hear Mozart's improvisations, Liszt's jams, "all we see is what they notated for other's to play." He recently watched a recording of Keith Jarrett describing how his trio rehearses to improvise on stage away from what they know.Keith JarrettJack London, "To Light A Fire" Jim doesn't have much in common with hedonist, Charles Bukowski, until Bukowski begins to read his poetry, then Jim says, "I'm right there with you, brother!" Always attracted to masters who did the work, without much telling you about them doing it, he tries to reach a point of equilibrium when writing a haiku, a balance, that's when it's done.Steve says that's an issue for his painting. How much to complete an idea before moving to another. How far is too far. He wants his work to be open to other people. When an artist over-finishes a work, there's no room for the viewer. He wants the viewer to see themselves in the work, to form the image in their mind. He thinks his work is a celebration of eye-sight.OrpheusAllan says it was easier before Modernism because the artist could say he was possessed by a golden light coming from the sky with a nymph whispering in your ear. Art was considered a gift from the Divine. Improvisation was the Gods speaking through you. Like with Orpheus, the music so beautiful, the wild animals came and listened peacefully. Today, we don't have that narrative crutch.Steve remembers Emory talking about a character in his novel taking over control of the story from him, the writer. That seems to be a similar concept of possession that artists use today.Emory says DeCartes says experience gets you to the cliff, insight lets you jump off. He writes about this in "Rules For The Direction Of The Mind."Ruth says she depended on inspiration when performing. It was all an improvisation started by a vision. On her last one, the inspiration never came, "it was horrid." Subscribe to this blog's feed  |  Subscribe to the podcast in iTunes  |  Follow  |  Like  |  Plus
