We're back! To start off Recently Regrettable (the worst from 2024), the guys are taking a look at the totally unimaginative Imaginary (see what I did there?) The guys discuss the really boring MC Escher "imaginary world," a lazy villain not wanting to do any of the legwork, a major character disappearing for most of the movie, bizarrely cheery ad promos and much more. Next week: a very unnecessary remake. “One of the things that I really wanted to focus on, and I felt it immediately after meeting Lina the housewife in Indiana [played by Betty Gilpin in the show], whose husband no longer wanted to kiss her on the mouth, I felt like this woman was as important as the Queen of England, as important as Napoleon. I felt her dreams and fears are just as universal as someone who has defeated an army and the only reason we're not hearing about her is because we have these sorts of rules in place for what possesses historical significance. And I don't really think that that's necessarily true,” says Lisa Taddeo, author of the book Three Women, on which her new TV show is based. In today's episode, we speak to Lisa Taddeo, creator of the show Three Women that stars Shailene Woodley, Betty Gilpin, DeWanda Wise and Gabrielle Creevy as “ordinary” women searching for their sexual identity and fulfillment in disparate and surprising ways. The show is an intimate, often stark portrayal of forbidden female desire and the consequences of that desire – both good and bad. We also talk about writing the “female gaze” into the scripts, filming with prosthetic penises, the power the book Twilight has on teenage girls, and the uncanny way our mothers influence our own sexuality. “My mother made up her face every morning, even when she wasn't going to leave the house. Who is she? My father sees her before she puts on her face as they say, so it's not for him. Nobody is coming to the door today, so it's not for them. It's certainly not for me, because I see her without makeup when she washes it off at night. So, who is it for, you know? And that was a question I had but didn't really know how to frame,” Taddeo says. To hear more about the groundbreaking show Three Women that's airing on Starz, listen to the podcast. Trigger warning: contains mentions of sexual explicit material, sexual assault and trauma.
A live taping of “Below the Line,” at LESFF 2024. ‘Sexperts' from all corners of the industry have brought some of their favorite funny, sexy, and steamy scenes to watch and discuss! Panelists include DeWanda Wise, (She's Gotta Have It), Edy Modica, (Jury Duty), Roger Kumble (Dir. Cruel Intentions), and Amy Northup (Intimacy Coordinator, Stress Positions, Fire Island). Moderated by NY Times writer Gina Cherelus, our panel chats about the role that sex plays in storytelling and dives into how today's creators are pushing the boundaries and overturning cinematic sex-pectations.
It's time to jump in the pool! Chris Pine's directorial debut was in theaters for two weeks tops, but we were able to dive in and experience it on the big screen. In the film, Chris Pine plays poolman Darren Barrenman. He fights for what is right in Los Angeles, which leads him down a path of corruption & real-estate & water & power. Pine assembled an impressive cast including Annette Bening, Danny DeVito, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Stephen Tobolowsky, Clancy Brown, John Ortiz, Ray Wise, Juliet Mills, and DeWanda Wise. Poolman premiered at the Toronto Film Festival to wretched reviews, so we knew we had to see it! Never watch this film, but do listen to our take on Chris Pine's Poolman!
You definitely know DeWanda Wise from somewhere. She's made a splash on the big and the small screen, in titles like SHE'S GOTTA HAVE IT (the Netflix series) and JURASSIC WORLD DOMINION. Now she's starring in the horror film IMAGINARY, which just landed on VOD after being in theaters earlier this year. But if you didn't realize that was the same DeWanda in all of those projects, you're not alone -- and she doesn't really mind. After all, an actor's job is to drop into the emotionality of a character, whatever the world. Today she's feeling seen by the emotionally sensitive May Boatwright in Gina Prince-Bythewood's 2008 film THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES. She'll talk about that, as well as how she uses that emotionality to navigate not just her performances, but also her career in Hollywood. Then, Jordan has one quick thing about "June Squibb's BEEKEEPER"...that's right, it's THELMA (no spoilers).***With Jordan Crucchiola and DeWanda Wise

Director Jeff Wadlow discusses his new film, Imaginary, with fellow Director Ari Sandel in a Q&A at the DGA theater in Los Angeles. In the conversation, he discusses working with a child actor, creating his creatures with a renowned creature effect house, and collaborating with the film's lead, DeWanda Wise, as a producing partner. The film follows Jessica, whose daughter develops an eerie attachment to a stuffed bear they find in the basement of her childhood home. What begins as innocent games quickly becomes sinister, as they realize that the bear is much more than just a stuffed toy. What a fantastic interview! DeWanda Wise is such an incredible and talented actress, I believe that her role as “Jessica” is definitely Oscar worthy. DeWanda explains that she is a force not to be reckoned with while protecting her sweet and innocent daughter, Alice played by Pyper Braun. What have learned? Once you take someone or something you love, you have opened Pandora's box. She also gave her perspective about the ‘Never Ever' on a more personal level and I could not agree with her more, specifically the mind-bending psychological aspect of the film. She compares Imaginary with A Nightmare on Elm Street in which I found interesting and fascinating because of the similarities of the two movies and how there is an entity that chases you and to hurt you along with your loved ones. Great comparison in my opinion! If there is a sequel to the film, I hope the writers and directors bring back DeWanda, Pyper, and Taegen as the main characters and I bet it will be a lot better than the first. Make sure to follow DeWanda on Instagram and catch her in the upcoming film, “Poolman” directed by Chris Pine. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/southjerseyhorror/message
Matt F Basler fancies himself a bit of a horror guru, so it was only right we had him on for the latest Blumhouse spooktacular. But, the only thing is, we didn't tell him it was awful. One of the greatest joys of Collider Ladies Night is welcoming a guest back to the show and celebrating how much they've accomplished in such a short period of time. That's the case with DeWanda Wise. She was on Ladies Night for her very first franchise film, Jurassic World Dominion, in 2022 and now she's back as the star and executive producer of a Blumhouse horror movie.Wise headlines Imaginary as Jess, a woman who moves back into her childhood home with her husband Max (Tom Payne) and her stepdaughters, Alice (Pyper Braun) and Taylor (Taegen Burns). Soon after moving in, the youngest, Alice, develops an attachment to a stuffed bear named Chauncey. Jess and Max brush it off as a charming connection between a child and her imaginary friend, but when Chauncey's scavenger hunt becomes increasingly sinister and dangerous, Jess is forced to accept the fact that Chauncey might be more than a stuffed toy, and he might also have a connection to her own long-forgotten past.Check out this edition of Collider Ladies Night to hear all about Wise's experience starring in and executive producing Imaginary, where she thinks the Jurassic World franchise should go next, the nightmarish note she received while preparing for Captain Marvel, and loads more! This week's episode of the Empire Podcast sees Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara and James Dyer cram into the podbooth just minutes after returning to London from a live show in Norwich, which was part of the pod's March tour (tickets still available for Sheffield, Dublin, and Salford via empireonline.com/podtour!). And, despite their exhaustion, they throw themselves into a fun episode that involves a deep dive into the filmographies of every actor who's played The Doctor in Doctor Who, an in-depth discussion of the upcoming Oscars that takes up pretty much the entire movie news section, and reviews of Damsel, Ricky Stanicky, and Origin. Guest-wise, it's another belter, as Chris has lovely chats with the wonderful Robin Wright, star of Damsel and Helen's personal fave, The Princess Bride (25:02 - 39:43 approx.), before welcoming back the magnificent DeWanda Wise, star of this week's horror film, Imaginary (1:02:11 - 1:21:17 approx). Does Chris pluck up the nerve to sing Curtis Stigers' I Wonder Why, which he has repurposed with DeWanda Wise's name added because it fits the chorus PERFECTLY, to her face? Well, what do you think?
