Good Morning, Colorado, you're listening to the Daily Sun-Up with the Colorado Sun. It's Friday June 18th. Today - G. Brown, a former Denver Post music columnist and journalist now has a new venture - a nonprofit called The Colorado Music Experience. It aims to create an online historical archive of Colorado's music scene. But before we begin, let's go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett's book “Colorado Day by Day”: Today, we take you back to June 18th, 1960 when Coloradans witnessed a confluence of politics and sports. State Democrats assembled in Durango at the same time as the US Open golf tournament was taking place in Denver. The meeting drew only one contender for the presidential nomination - John F Kennedy who spoke to an audience of 2.500. Meanwhile a golfer Arnold Palmer made history of his own with a come from behind triumph Now, our feature story. Brown is a longtime fixture of Colorado's music scene. The former Denver Post music columnist and journalist now has a new venture - a two-year-old nonprofit, The Colorado Music Experience, dedicated to creating an online historical archive of Colorado's music scene. Colorado Sun reporters Kevin Simpson and Thy Vo talk about G. Brown's career and his efforts to preserve the state's pop music legacy. Gov. Jared Polis has signed a sweeping transportation fee and spending bill that aims to inject more than $5 billion dollars into state road and transit projects over the next 11 years. The governor Thursday signed Senate Bill 260 near an interchange on I-70 that is slated for a nearly $1 billion overhaul. The fees that start next year include 27 cents on deliveries, including from Amazon, FedEx and GrubHub, and 30 cents on Uber and Lyft rides. Starting in July 2022, the state would charge another 2 cents per gallon on gasoline and diesel fuel, with that fee increasing by 1 cent every year until it reaches 8 cents a gallon. A proposed ballot initiative that would tax recreational marijuana to provide tutoring and after school programs to mostly low-income students is dividing educators, lawmakers and community groups. Initiative 25 would add a 5% tax on recreational marijauna sales to generate about $138 million a year, and divert $22 million in state land board revenue to the program. Advocates say the measure would help close learning gaps between low-income students and more affluent peers. But opponents say it is a back door to a school voucher program. The Western Conservative Summit will take place in Denver Friday and Saturday. The event includes pre-recorded videos as well as in-person speakers. The live speakers include Colorado's Republican U.S. Reps. Lauren Boebert, Ken Buck and Doug Lamborn, who are scheduled to appear Saturday. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
“I can do that!” These were the words of a young girl as she watched elementary-school-aged boys freestyle on the playground. Little did the artist, now known as G.I.L, know that rapping would go far beyond a frivolous challenge. She began to develop not only a love for it but for poetry in general. G.I.L, pronounced “Jill,” was born in Plantation, Florida but raised in the small town of Statesboro, Georgia. She was a timid child who later found she could freely and unapologetically speak through the lyrics of poems and songs she wrote. Her single-parent mother made sure that G.I.L and her three siblings had a strong spiritual foundation. That being said, no matter where G.I.L may have found herself at in her life, she always made her way back to her roots in Christ. It was no coincidence that upon connecting with a then Christian Artist, now husband, her love for writing music resurfaced. Today G.I.L (God Is Love) is the mother of three beautiful children Mackenzie, Malachi, and Derrick III, and the wife of Derrick Gillis Jr. goes by the artist name XIIITH Disciple. She utilizes her gift to minister in the form of Christian Hip-Hop to those who have not always made the best decisions in life. Her goal is to spread God’s Grace, Mercy, and most importantly, Love to all who will listen. G.I.L knows that one of the enemy’s go-to tactics of destruction is to convince people that they are not loved; therefore, instilling the truth of God’s love is the majority of the battle. G.I.L currently has 3 singles streaming on all platforms and is set to release her first album June of 2021. Today G expands on this habit some of us fall into wherein we say we "should" do something but fail to actually get started, or do it, and then experience the waterfall of negative emotions that follow the act of letting ourselves down. In episode 148. Need vs. Should, (part 1), Garrett helps us identify what a "need" truly is: something that is deeply, soulfully aligned for us, that created a full-body "yes" and a burning desire to act, with urgency! For example: I NEED to get up early to get that workout in.. and then we do it. Versus saying "I should lose weight" but doing nothing about it. In this episode we discuss how sometimes a "should" is something that could be aligned for you but that your limiting beliefs are keeping you from turning the "should" into "need." Listen to the episode teaching all about limiting beliefs, here. Check out episode 158, Ghosting Culture to learn more about how to be in integrity with yourself.
