Navigating the Customer Experience
139: Transformation Guide for the Most Inexperienced Leaders with Brad Dude

Navigating the Customer Experience

Brad Dude has over 40 years and he has been in more than 30 territories and countries around the world. He has provided leadership training, organizational development, program evaluation, workforce training, coaching and project management services to US Government agencies, public and non-profit organizations and private sector enterprises. He specializes in training, group facilitation, process improvement, team building and strategic planning, especially for newly promoted team leaders, supervisors, managers and executives.   Brad brings a leadership and management background to his consulting having served as a senior staff member for the Peace Corps in Micronesia and Samoa. He has also worked in similar positions for other organizations in the Washington, DC area as well as New Orleans, where he now makes his home with his wife Sue. He has one son and three grandsons.   Questions   Could you tell us a little bit about your journey? It's a long journey, because your bio said over 40 years. Maybe you could condense it a little bit for us. But just tell us how it is that you got to where you are today in your own words. Your most recent book that you have published called Quick!, could you share with our listeners a little bit about that book and what is it all about? How as a leader, as a manager, as a business owner over the past couple of decades have you been able to get those leaders on board to recognize that customer experience is so important? Could you share with us what's the one online resource, tool, website or app that you absolutely can't live without in your business? Do you have maybe one or two books that have had the biggest impact on you? It could have been a book that you read a very long time ago, or even a book that you read recently, but it really has resonated with you. We have a lot of listeners who are business owners and managers who feel they have great products and services, but they lack the constantly motivated human capital. If you're sitting across the table from that person, what's the one piece of advice that you would give them to have a successful business? Could you share with us what's the one thing that's going on in your life right now that you're really excited about? It could be something that you're working on to develop yourself or your people. Where can listeners find you online? Do you have a quote or a saying that during times of adversity or challenge, they will tend to revert to it kind of helps to refocus them or get them back on track? Do you have one of those?   Highlights   Brad's Journey   Brad shared that it is kind of a long journey, it gets longer every day, it seems like. He started out doing a management planning for the Peace Corps overseas in a variety of countries, mostly in the Pacific and then in the Middle East. And that got him into working for Westinghouse that brought him more into the middle East doing some project management for USAID projects and West Bank and Gaza. And that got him into the training more in the project management and coaching and counselling and they were doing a lot of executive coaching on management and leadership kinds of issues. Some colleagues of his started their own consulting firm in the DC area and that's where he got to go to Jamaica for the first time in kind of the middle to late 80s doing a management analyst course.   Ministry of Planning and they met that time and it was great. And so he got four different trips down to Jamaica and participants were some of the best he's ever had all over the world. So as he got older and wanted to jot down some of the things that he would do that seem to be fairly successful with his participants and clients, he started to write books. And so he has now got six books, they're up on Amazon, mostly dealing with leadership and temperament and how new leaders view their world and try to help them out that way.   Brad's Book “Quick!” What is it About?     Brad shared that his book, it's called Quick!: I Need to Be a Leader in 30 Days!. And it's a title that is focused on newly promoted or newly hired managers, supervisors and leaders. What he found, for example, the last 9 years, he has been teaching a leadership class for NASA, just outside of Washington, DC.   And he found that although when you're in the classroom, face to face, it's great and people seem to get things. But with training, training with organizations, even in government is often the first thing that's cut.   And so, participants might go through one 12-day course or something, and then don't hear from them again, and they maybe come back or write or ask for coaching and they felt there was a need to encapsulate in a handy guide of what somebody can do every day, because a lot of the questions are, “I have the title of leader or manager or supervisor, but what do I do?”   And so, he focused on what to do over a 30-day period and the idea was to help newly promoted folks hit the ground running so they can have some success. And I had Scott Blanchard, who is the now the President of the Ken Blanchard company. He wrote the foreword to their book, and he mentioned that over 50 million millennials are working in North America alone with 10 million in management, he estimates about 2 million new managers every year.   But the first year is very important and people usually don't get trained during their first year. So there's a lot of failure, failure by not meeting their own goals, expectations of their company aren't met. And they thought that's the time to really help them and have a guide to help them be successful. So they put together this book and basically said, how do you be a leader in 30 days?   Well, he has got four steps. First was to understand some of the basic principles of leadership and he subjectively picked the ones that he felt have been most successful for new managers and leaders. And then step two was to look at their followers, learn about who are those folks that are looking to you for guidance. Third step practical applications, you can't just read a book, put it on a shelf and say, “I'm a leader”, you got to go out and do something, and practice. So in his book, he has practical readings and exercises, and especially the fourth step, which is have some reflection and support time. And that means identifying a coach, whether it be your supervisor, or mentor, or a friend, or a colleague, or your minister, whoever that is that you can bounce some ideas off of. And ultimately, they can give you some feedback as well on how you're doing.   Me: Now, as it relates to who are your followers, if this is an employee in an organization, is it persons that look up to that person who now is the manager or leader? Is that what you mean?   Brad agreed. But it's more than that. Ken Blanchard says it the best, he says, “Lead from wherever you are in the organization.” So you don't necessarily have to have a title of manager, supervisor, leader to exhibit leadership behaviours. And so, whoever that is, and so, in the book, they are considering clients, people that report to you, people that you report to as well are all potential followers.   Me: Okay, so those are some really, really good strategies that you can employ for persons, as you mentioned, who are transitioning into that management/leadership role.   The Importance of Customer Experience   Me: Now, leadership is so critical to customer experience and there's a saying that I have “That mud flows from the top of the stream.” When you find something that's going awry in an organization, a lot of times, it's not at the tip of where you're looking at that the problem probably evolved from, but more so, you need to look at the leader and the structure of the organization and what's happening at the top.   And so I wanted to speak a little bit about that for us, what if we have an organization where the leader doesn't see the importance of customer experience, they're not able to connect the two, they're not able to connect the financial, because a lot of leaders, I think, still believe to this day that customer experience is just about making the customer feel good and they're just not able to see that translate into a very tangible and financial way. How as a leader, as a manager, as a business owner over the past couple of decades have you been able to get those leaders on board to recognize that customer experience is so important?   Brad shared that it's a challenge and there are many, many examples where leaders just don't get it, because they are trapped into the idea that their position power is what's important, and not so much their customers or their followers.   So they've done a lot of different ways, it depends on the openness of the leader. He worked with Department of Energy, their nuclear division for a while and they had a leader and oftentimes, these are political types who get in for whatever reason, not necessarily their leadership abilities. And they just don't see it, it's checking the box, “Oh, well, I've had a training. Check. I've had a meeting with a customer. Check.”   And things don't go the way they should. What he typically does is do a series of interviews with the direct reports of such a leader to start to identify what are the true challenges in the organization. He really likes the idea about modelling the way and trying to talk to the leader about trying to be more of an exemplary leader. But also he likes the idea about challenging the process.   They have in the book, this is the Kouzes and Posner five practices of exemplary leadership - Modelling the way, Inspiring a shared vision, Challenging the process, Enabling others to Act and Courage the heart.   He likes to do a lot of process improvement with folks and they get a whiteboard and actually start to draw a schematic of the customer service process and who's supposed to do what to whom. And he doesn't do it as a group, he usually brings in parts because people, oftentimes in such a process are doing it, if they say it's a five-part process, he brings in the folks who are doing part three, and let them do some drawings and say, “Oh, this is supposed to happen, that's supposed to happen.”   And they go away and they bring in people from the first group, for example. So they end up with kind of this gigantic map done by different groups. And what they find is they're in consistencies, expectations are off, somebody expects this group to be able to give them this kind of information, and it's not happening. So then you kind of try to bring that leader in to show him or her what kind of mess they're in and have some ideas, some strategies for helping them improve that process.   App, Website or Tool that Brad Absolutely Can't Live Without in His Business   When asked about an online resource that he cannot live without in his business, Brad shared that the website he likes the most it's called www.life-changingworkshops.com. And this is out of Chapala Institute. It's based on a new book come out by Ken Nelson and some others, a variety of authors on it called Designing and Leading Transformational Workshops. He thinks for a new leader, outside of his own books, he thinks that's a really good one and that's a great website that they have as well. Another one is called www.ascenddevelopmentgroup.com. And this is run by a friend of his, Jeff Whitehead, they both did training at NASA together. He does outdoor experiential leadership workshops and it's a very interesting website to show videos of how he interjects leadership into rope climbing and things like that.   Books That Have Had the Greatest Impact on Brad    When asked about books that have the biggest impact, Brad shared that there are several, one was called Why Him? Why Her?: How to Find and Keep Lasting Love by Dr. Helen Fisher. Brad is the co-author of a new model on looking at temperament called The Basic Elements of Temperament. And a lot of their work, his late partner, Jim harden, they did that together. And Dr. Fisher kind of did similar kind of research, but on a larger scale dealing with some of the dating websites to look at how temperament influences the way we look at other people, the behaviours of others. Now, he and Jim, they're not looking at dating, they're looking at how leaders look at their employees and their managers and their customers. So that book, Why Him? Why Her? is a really good one by Dr. Fisher to kind of give some basics as well. He also likes John Kotter's work out of Harvard, “What Leaders Really Do.” He's written a number of books on leadership and he just loves those books that really gets him thinking about leadership more.   Advice for Business Owner to Have a Successful Business   Brad stated that the one piece of advice, it's hard to have one, but trust is a big issue and in his leadership courses that he has done in the past, trust is a big issue and that gets into a variety of things, including how to model the way and not making promises that you can't keep and being consistent and things like that.   But he probably would spend time with a leader talking about temperament. His experience has been the difficulties that folks have with being professional, being productive, has a lot to do with their experience with their manager or their supervisor when they're not getting along, when they feel they're not being listened to, that is a de-motivator.   And people leave organizations, they don't leave them because of the job or the work, it's usually because of the relationship with their manager or supervisor. But he would spend some time trying to talk about how they are viewing the world, how they look at their position power. There's three kinds of power, they have it in the book as well.   The lowest level of leadership is the position power; it's having that title. And it seems that's where everybody wants to be, “If I was only the boss, then I would solve all the problems.”   And then they get to be the boss and they realize, “Oh, it's not as easy as I thought.” But they'd say, now I'm there, now they've got to do what I'm telling them to do. So that means your followers are following you because of the negative consequences if they don't, that they could be fired, they could be assigned to lousy jobs, what have you. So it's the lowest level, and that's a power that doesn't stay with you, when that manager leaves the organization, that power doesn't go with him or her, it stays for the next person that's coming. So it's not even a power that you take with you.   So that's the lowest level. The second one is that power of competence. That's where followers follow you because of what you've done for the organization, because of what you've done for them. So that gets you into a mindset of “Gee, if I want to be competent, I need to be really sharp and look for opportunities to help my employees.”   And the third, the best kind of power that a leader can get is the power of positive reputation. And that's why no matter what your title is, people follow you because of who you are. They'll do whatever needs to be done if you ask them because of who you are, and what you stand for, and the values that you bring to the organization.   What Brad is Really Excited About Now!   Brad shared that during this pandemic, not a lot of training was going on, especially not a lot of leadership training, he has done a few zoom workshops over Zoom with 50/60 people. And there's just not as many as there used to be. So he has had a lot of time and so he's writing a novel called “Finding Eden.” And it's based on kind of his travels throughout the Middle East and the issue about asylum seekers trying to find a better life. So he's writing a novel, just about done. So he's very excited about that right now.   Where Can We Find Brad Online   Website – www.braddude.com LinkedIn – Brad Dude   Quote or Saying that During Times of Adversity Brad Uses   Brad stated that he does have a quote, the one he kind of refers to now and then, not every day, but sometimes. It's says, “Don't let yesterday take up too much of today.” And that was written by Will Rogers. So the idea is, don't get bogged down with what you've done in the past. 5 Myths About Content Marketing That are Keeping You Stuck

Side Hustle Teachers

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 10, 2021 6:41

There are people who will tell you that blogs are dead. There are others who will say podcasts are just for nerds and YouTube is just for Justin Bieber wannabes and kids who play Minecraft while people watch. And those people would be wrong. Content marketing – whether it be through a blog, podcast, or video show – is still a fantastic way to build and scale a business! But maybe you're hesitant to get started because you've heard some of the rumors about content marketing and wondering if it will really work for you. I can save you the time of reading the rest of this post and tell you now that it is… but if you want a little more reassurance, keep reading. Myth #1: Content Marketing Isn't Necessary for My Industry Okay, I'm going to make a bold statement here: Content marketing is an essential part of every business.  If you're thinking that you don't need to share content because your industry can't benefit from it, you're going to want to rethink that. For small businesses, blogs, podcasts, and video shows are the fastest way to be found and for people to get to know, like, and trust you. You can review this post on why great content is essential for your business for more reasons why. Myth #2: Everything's Already Been Said, I Have Nothing New to Add to the Conversation This is perhaps the most common, pervasive myth out there, and to be honest, this one really comes down to confidence and mindset. Is it likely that your audience can find the same or similar information from other people on the web? Yep. Absolutely. Does that mean you shouldn't share it? Not at all. Your audience wants to know what you think about things, even if they've heard them before. They want to hear your stories and experience, even if the lessons learned are part of other peoples' stories, too. They want your advice and guidance because it's coming from you. You are what makes your content different and worth reading. Myth #3: Creating Content Takes Too Much Time I won't tell you that you can whip up quality content in just a couple minutes, but I will tell you that the time you spend on it is worth it.  Also, many entrepreneurs are spending too much time creating new content rather than using the content you've already produced. In fact, writing a weekly blog or recording a podcast or video show can make creating content for social media easier and save you time. Instead of writing all your social posts from scratch, you can use your blog, podcast, or video as a foundation and call to action. Plus, once you get a system in place, like the one I teach in Content Made Simple, you can streamline the process and produce great blog posts, podcast or video episodes in less time. Myth #4: Social Media Can Do Everything Hosted Content Can Do No. Just no. Social media is amazing. As business owners, we are so lucky to have social networks available to us to meet new people, learn new things, and connect with customers.  That said, social media is not a replacement for creating content on your own platform.  Why not? Where do I start?! Let's start with the fact that posting on your own platform gives you complete control of your content. Do you know who controls your content when you share on Facebook? Mark Zuckerburg (et al.). That's why your posts have an average reach of about 1-2%. Then there's discoverability and SEO. When you search for something on Google, you get results from YouTube, Pinterest (a visual search engine), blogs, websites, etc. You will not be shown a tweet, Instagram or Facebook post. Google doesn't crawl those sites or index them the same way they do a webpage. I could go on, but I'm starting to think I need to write a separate post on this topic. Myth #5: I Need to Publish Tons of Content In Order to “Catch Up” with Others If you're new to producing regular content, it can feel like you're behind others who've been doing it for years.  It's understandable, but there's no reason to be intimidated or to try to create a bunch of posts to “catch up.” There are actually some benefits to being new, not having a big audience, and having only a few pieces of content published.  First, when your audience is small you can experiment with new things and find your voice as an entrepreneur. It also provides a chance for you to get to know what your audience wants to know about. You can see what they respond to, engage with the smaller group of people on a more intimate level, and see what questions they have that you can address in future content. Have you gotten stuck because of one (or more) of these all too common myths? If so, I hope you're able to now see that your fears are understandable, but unnecessary. Take a deep breath, open a new post or a Google doc and get started on creating your next blog post, podcast or video episode.

Most of us feel like we don't have the time we need to do what we really want, get what we need or do the things that might not be productive or profitable but are actually the things that feed us the most and that have the potential to catalyze us into the expressions, intentions and dreams we have for ourselves, our work and the world.  Wisdom Byte: If you are waiting to find the time, you will never find the time. Time is finite. You can't make time - there is no time kitchen. And you can't find more time - time is not lost. What we need is not more time. What we need is the 'space' to take care of the demands of our current lives AND feed the desires still coming into form AND nourish our hearts and souls and bodies with things that may not be 'productive' or 'profitable' but that sustain us in big ways.  You are invited to join Christine Arylo for this Feminine Power Time - a POWER PAUSE, taped at the mid-year point, to invoke THE FEMININE POWER OF CREATING SPACE ... which gives you the power to create space for things that may not be urgent or profitable or productive but that matter to you Your internal power to name what it is that you really desire to create space for these next few months with 4 wisdom inquiries ... in your work, in your relationships, for your body and just for yourself  The power of pausing at the mid-year point - the Solstice... this interactive session is like the appetizer to the deeper power pause we take every year to get clear and conscious and intentional about how we focus our life force The ELEVATION projects you want to create space for - that have the power to elevate your presence, self expression in the world   See you there! We had the pleasure of interviewing Emanuel over Zoom video! One of the most anticipated debut R&B albums of the past year, Emanuel's full-length project ALT THERAPY has been unveiled to the world today via Motown Records & Universal Music Canada. Before the world experienced moments of great upheaval and change this past year, an unknown new artist in Canada, a son of Ethiopian immigrants, had unknowingly written music that was prophetic to the times. His debut single, the emotionally stirring “Need You”, was released as the global pandemic struck, resonating with people around the world who were forced into isolation. Months later, when the brutal killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Trayvon Martin sparked a worldwide reckoning of systemic racism and racial inequality, Emanuel offered “Black Woman” to the world -his moving ode of reconciliation that honors the majesty of Black women. Last month, as vaccines were distributed and possibility began to take the shape of reality, Emanuel shared his prayer for the future with the release of “Worldwide”. Now, during the week of Juneteenth and one year after the release of his debut EP Session 1: Disillusion, Emanuel celebrates freedom, growth and love with ALT THERAPY, his full-length contribution to the “renaissance of beautiful black art in the world.”ALT THERAPY is a journey. A narrative of discovering a deep self-awareness and celebrating personal growth, Emanuel's debut album is the testament of a young man in the process of becoming a great man.A collection of 12 songs, ALT THERAPY is home to Emanuel's two EPs released in 2020, Session 1: Disillusion (nominated for the2021 Traditional R&B/Soul Recording of the Year JUNO Award) and Session 2: Transformation, as well as six additional songs: the manifestation mantra “Worldwide”, the revelation of new love on “Pillows”, the emotional plea of “I Need a Doctor”, the inner reckoning on “Detention”, the discovery of authentic love on “I Been”, and the rare male R&B duet on “Hindsight” featuring fellow Toronto R&B artist Dylan Sinclair. Also released today is the visually striking official video for “Worldwide”, a song born out of Emanuel's deep yearning to take his music, its message and energy, to people around the world while experiencing and absorbing the wisdom of many cultures. Directed by Kit Weyman and Executively Produced by Director X, the video is a visual depiction of Emanuel's “Worldwide” manifestation mantra. Emanuel's talent is indisputable. Discovered by Canadian hip-hop icon Kardinal Offishall, launched by global superstar Idris Elba, signed by legendary R&B record label Motown Records, honored with a JUNO Award nomination for his debut EP, and championed by fans, critics and industry partners alike, Emanuel is one of the most destined new voices in R&B.We want to hear from you! JB: How'd you get into sales?Brandon Fluharty:Thought I was going to be a professional soccer player, I went to Romania, had an amazing year. But learned something important about myself, which was an important foundation for sales.  My Ambition far outweighed my talent compared to other young players who were much further along in their developmentLearned, Focus, discipline, take care of myself becoming a true professionalRan into some injuries, came back to US, Finished school and moved to NYRealized I couldn't play soccer and wanted to be involved in Soccer, got involved with a training organization with youth players in Long IslandIt was my first foray into sales, without realizing I was in sales. We were former players who wanted to build a unique training organization in a competitive space using smaller balls for trainingSold small groups and 1:1 training sessions- wasn't realizing I was selling - I was passionate, knowledgeable but did have a revenue target to hitFrom there - company was sold ….didn't ask for equity in the company ...lesson learnedMoved into the city, started working for a music marketing agency Combined another passion of mine (DJ Tables in his office) working with that agency and see that as my first true step into selling. I was brought on to grow accounts, provided background music for big brands like Gucci, Royal Caribbean...Skratch DJ Academy, Utilize DJs to create background music to make the space more enjoyableJB: Move from Agency to tech sales?BF:Foray back to NY, at the time my girlfriend was a former fashion designer and turned nurse.  Made a lifestyle choice to move away from NY, had been there, done that so had the opportunity to move down to Sarasota, FL where she grew up.  Was snowing in NY, coming to FL on a beautiful beach, having a cocktail at sunset, dolphins going by...why don't we try this out as an experiment?Bought first house in 2009 at a great time to buy and had to pivot career and completely start over!  Remote work wasn't a thing then so I started working for local media companies selling print ads to SMBs. Full-cycle sales grind, cold calling, try and build a base of business working to climb the ranks. Moving from Print to Digital ads, Monster.com → went to local TV station selling ads and moved to Digital marketing company at ReachLocal → From there climbed the ranks, mid-market IT outsourcing firm → Remote late stage startup from SF, Revel Systems → 3.5 years ago recruited to LivePerson, leading in Conversational AI, Working big brands, Delta Airlines, United, Chipotle, Citi corp & more. JB: How do you think about aligning lifestyle with ideal career?BF:I was drawn to sales for both financial freedom and autonomy.  I've always created that TIME freedom.  I've always thought sales is an ON-RAMP, I'm an intrapreneur now wanting to move to entrepreneur. One thing I've learned and embraced climbing the ranks in sales from the down and dirty pleading to have a local bar buy a 2inch space in a newspaper to working with a Fortune 10 Brand making massive digital transformationI've embraced sales as my craft, after realizing I wasn't going to be a professional soccer player wasn't in the cards for me, but the way I was approaching making a career out of it, I've embraced sales as my craft. When I've given sales that respect as my craft, it has paid me handsomely in all those things that I desired to be creative and do big things JB: Talk to me about the habits and routines that allow you to show up at your BEST?BF:The perception of the seller, makes me cringe…”don't be a used car salesman” I feel really bad as they shouldn't be thrown under the bus. It's this perception of all sellers that you're that person, typically male, extroverted, loud, sleazy and you're just trying to get something done to sell a lemon….that's the common perception globally when you hear of sales.  Certainly not of what/how I picture or think of myself. The best way to actually sell is to stop selling. Don't give anyone the opportunity to lump you into that used car salesman stereotype category.  It has promoted and elevated the career sales for me personally. When I respected that I could have more respect in my work. 2nd thing I learned. Falling in LOVE, not necessarily with the work, but the WAY I WORK and want to operate. That has been the engine to allow me to move from SMB selling to Super Strategic types of deals then showing people how to move from intrapreneur to entrepreneur. Falling in love with how I operate was a big thing and the way I operate, I don't believe in this false premise of Work/life balance.  Unrealistic to think I'll get  8 hours uninterrupted sleep, 8 hours of work uninterrupted and 8 hours family/friends time. This premise of things falling neatly into a bucket and being perfectly balanced, isn't real life especially for today's modern seller. I've fallen in love and respected the love of the craft of sales.I want to embody the professional athlete as I approach my craft. I want to be the Ronaldo, Messi, Lebron of my craft and building work life integration. If I'm thinking about ideas for a client at 9pm at night it shouldn't feel like a burden but something I can get excited about. A Saturday morning, that's fine as long as I'm excited and it's a sign of the right career and my system is working. That's homeostasis!!I have to integrate those things and that has been a big insight for me to climb, sustain and create consistent results. JB:Talk to us about your own journey with mental health.  You published a really powerful LinkedIn post. BF:We are humans first, and professionals secondI divulged some really personal information that many people even really close to me didn't even knowEarly in life, I tried to commit suicide twiceAt the time didn't know I had a panic attack in front of a client who was in the officeI got a rush to my head, couldn't say anything, felt frozen and time didn't move. Then 10 years ago at 32 suffered an idiopathic stroke which was a HUGE wakeup call for me. I said I NEED to prioritize my health. I was going super hard. The Mantra in sales is typically, Hustle, hustle, hustle…..you can sleep when you die and I was really living that. Caffeinating in the afternoon, triple shot espresso, little to no sleep and constantly hustling. This pressure was huge to hit quota, you want to be on the leaderboard. There was no reason a healthy 32 year, vegetarian, athlete, etc. should have any of that and it was a huge wakeup call. It's taken a while, 10 years to settle in and still working on it. I'm not shy talking about physical health or mental health, this is something that should be talked about constantly, it's not just about 1 month for mental health awareness. Needs to be de-stigmatized and talked about no different than any other physical health, ailment It was vulnerable, sensitive and was my most popular post on LinkedIn and I'm proud of that as it allowed others to talk about their own mental health struggles.JB: THANK YOU - Talk to me about the tools you use to optimize your health and personal operating system. BF:I'm in the right place, props to LivePerson, work from anywhere, be anyone. How can I be of service to others if I can't be authentic and am hiding parts of myself. Not to say things are perfect now and I have to work very hard at keeping those dark moments at bay. Where I've landed (hate that it's an acronym, we don't need more) I call it PREP - Plan, REST, EFFORT, PERFORM. A Simple way to keep me in check personally. Planning- How do I make it easier tomorrow? → Plan ahead, I add it as a habit into my daily routine. A daily routine how I start and end my day. Everything in the middle will be out of my control. Flexipline- Flexibility & Discipline - If I'm on any one end of those spectrums, not going to have full say in how I control my environment or the outcomes I want to strive for if I'm too flexible.  If I'm hyper disciplined I won't be open to opportunity. I found somewhere in between is the sweet spot, sometimes you need to dial up the discipline and sometimes need to dial up the flexibility. Give myself a good starting point and good ending point so I know I can show up and do the fun stuff during the daily Start routine, Reading, getting new knowledge, listening to podcasts, writing, contributing to a book I want to write one day. Then I can do my most important stuff during the day!  End my most important dayUse Todoist as a way to capture ideas, notes and tasks so I can pick that up tomorrow. My head can be clear, I can spend time with my wife, I can recover, relax and rejuvenate in the evening. I track sleep with things like Whoop, a great wearable to understand how much I slept and the quality of my sleep and that has started to become a leading indicator of my sales performance and my health. Those dark moments that creep in I can tell it's when my sleep isn't up to par or I get in sleep debt. I realize I don't have energy and discipline to stick with my habits, my nutrition declines and it becomes a downward spiral. It's not that hard if I sleep well, I'm passionate about what I do, that helps me maintain performance in satisfaction so I can then put my E of effort behind my work. Performance- then I can use that data to be my insight. It's become very personal and it's not dictated by my company. I'm not chasing quota and making tons of money, those become outcomes because I'm focused and in love with how I work and how I operate. I had to discover this the hard way.If you can fall in love with how to work, keep yourself in check, and replace good habits with bad habits you will have positive outcomes! JB: How do you bounce back from the NOs on the big deals?BF:2020 was rough and a lot of people struggled2019 was an incredible professional year for me, got my pipeline depleted on the 31st of 2019. Heading to 2020 with a bunch of momentum, energy and confidence….BOOM furloughed employees, crisis mode then the summer comes up with racial issues and more that came into the fold. I came to realize there was more to life than just closing a bunch of deals. I became really introspective and embraced not being on a plan every day and realized this is the moment to look at life in a bigger way and get back to the things that are important. What are the things that are important to me? What do I want to accomplish in life before I die?I went 3 Quarters without closing new business, getting into new habits, new routines and getting back into the system allowed me to embrace a lot of new opportunities that started flying in December. I was able to sprint because I had the physical & mental energy to go for it because I was rested and recovered. I was able to get a huge amount done in 11 days closing a multi-million dollar deal with the team and was able to end on a high note after 3 quarters of not delivering. Because of the work I put in during the quiet time, now I have a system that allows me to keep running. Sprint hard, rest, recover and sprint hard again because in the past 5 months I have delivered more in sales than the last 2.5 years. I owe a lot to this personal way of operating like a professional athlete can consistently get the championship and rings season after season, they do it because they love their craft and want to be the best they can be. They take care of the off-season, take care of their body, get their mindset right, put their full effort in and that's where I feel I am in this place in my career. JB: What leadership qualities do you love?BF:Trust - that you hired the right person and give the freedom/autonomy to let them figure things out. Although I don't manage people directly I have built teams within larger teams and I've always enjoyed that as I didn't want to do the managerial path. I liked building from the ground up. Look at the person on the other side, human first, professional second. When you let them be the best human they can be, they will perform the best as a professional. JB: What does success mean to you?BF:Different things at different times, where I'm at in my career, moment of the day. Something I'm striving for and trying to quantify with a project I'm working on is Be Focused. Live Great. And a tool I'm looking to turn into a product called ThriveSpace ™ and build a community of what this could come up with. Combine health data, the idea of if you enjoy your craft, doing deep work can be highly satisfying.  Ensuring you have the moments to do that.I know when I can do deep work and focus on 1 task at a time it's deeply gratifying, we know the science tells us that bouncing back and forth from email, slack, chat isn't where real work occurs and amazing results come from.Tracking that and combining that with my feelings and my mood, that creates this thing that I call a ThriveScore. Being able to know myself, know that I can give myself the gift of time, the gift of health, the gift of working really deeply on things I care about. That's success. JB: Where can people find you?BF: LinkedIn daily posts, good honest authentic conversation. BeFocusedLiveGreat.com Signup and join the movement! Looking to build a community around people who have this shared vision there's more to selling work and modern work than just work Best way to be at peak performance and optimize our selves is to integrate that work and life in a gratifying and satisfying way.Not just tracking data for geeking out, it's to utilize it in a meaningful way to quantify meaning and satisfaction and what ThriveSpace will be as a product - check it out, learn more and join the movement!

Legendary Leaders: Making Legendary Leaders

Don't be the business owner that falls in love with his/her product. You must fall in love with your customer in order to consistently answer this fundamental business question: What business do you need to be in? Bottomline, the business you need to be in is the one your customer needs you to be in. Let me share it with you from a perspective that hits home for me personally. Do you know how many times I have adjusted, pivoted, and iterated in Legend Leaders? If you don't, go back and listen to all 365 episodes of the podcast from 2020. Not only was I green in my skills but I was also green when it came to who I was talking to, why I was doing it, where I had come from, etc. All of those pieces were adjusted in 2020 and are still being adjusted even today. And I keep asking myself the hard questions to help me grow Legend and serve those I am meant to serve. What business am I in? I empower women who want to create a business, I arm current business owners with the strategies they need to in order to scale, and I teach corporate executives to become Legends in the corporate world. I serve them all because I keep asking and answering the hard questions. So that said, what business do YOU need to be in? The point is this, I will keep iternating to be in the business I need to be in. Most of us find one product we love and we get so focused on the product, we lose sight of the entire point of being in business, which is to serve and to share our gifts. Most people say, "Well, I just want to serve this group of people in this one way." And that's fine. But when that group of people change, the industry changes, the economy changes, what are you going to do? If you are constantly asking yourself, what business do I NEED to be in, then you will keep your finger on the pulse of your ideal clients, the industry, and the economy. You will wake up each day feeling fulfilled because you know you are serving who you are meant to serve. So what business do you need to be in? Answer that today and move yourself and your business forward. Be Legendary!

No greeting today. Rant starting, immediately. I literally never play by the rules.I have a freaking aversion to it.It almost makes my stomach hurt when people, companies, or literally anyone tries to throw them on me…Ever get the “That’s just how we do things?”Yeah, me too, except, that’s NOT how it rolls with me, haha! Here’s a few quick examples so you can understand where I’m coming from. I’m not talking about LAWS or anything like that.I’m talking about “Conventional Wisdom” that is totally and utterly worthless and should be run from like you would run from an angry grizzly bear.Phone Calls - I literally don’t take them. Here’s a screenshot of my phone if you don’t believe me. (P.S. if this gives you anxiety, you may be suffering from “I care way too much about what other people think about me” disease.)Zoom calls? Only if something is literally burning down.Meetings in general? Nope, avoid like the plague.Stupid processes that cost me time at the expense of a couple dollars? Nope.I’m ranting today so I’m just going to keep going. Most unsuccessful people put a $0 an hour time value on their time. This ties in with playing by the rules because most rules are a complete and utter waste of time, and only make sense because most people are too dumb to realize their time is the most precious thing. For instanceWhy does it take 2 hours and a trip to the bank to send a wire transfer? Because the rules are outdated and stupid and will soon be extinct. Why do I NEED to take your phone call, some strange outdated sense of obligation? No, you can just quickly text me the details. Thank you.Why do I NEED to listen to your negativity about my business or current strategy? Because you have some fancy title? Nope. I’ll find someone else thanks.People in general care WAY TOO MUCH about what people think about them. They will do dumb things like..Go to parties and meetups with people they dislike simply because they were invited and feel bad saying no.Allow a friend to talk about themselves for 5 hours straight and then go home feeling better while you are completely drained and not say a word about it.Stay living in the same dumb area where it’s cloudy and cold and you literally suffer from seasonal depression simply because your mom (who you don’t really like) lives there….AM I GETTING TOO REAL FOR YOU TODAY? I just don’t understand why people STRESS OUT and cause themselves ANXIETY over things that literally don’t matter.I literally write this in every letter but here it is again. 99% of your decisions and actions and thoughts, ALL OF IT, doesn’t matter ONE BIT towards getting you where you want to go.Literally it’s worthless.Might as well be a pile of poo.So when you find yourself DOING an activity that isn’t actually moving the needle on what is important to you… why do you keep doing it??That’s the real thing I can’t figure out today, I’ll gladly take answers in the comments if you have them…..Why do humans…Work a crappy job for 23k a year after taxes for any reason, ever? The internet exists.Persist in crappy relationships that their own best friends can see are terrible, when there are better options physically in sight?Continue to work on that idea or business that is totally doomed when they could easily pivot and start other things?I’m sure, actually I know (Psychology degree here) that there is a ton of nuance to all of this and the reasons why people do dumb things. But when I was sitting down to write this today it kind of just hit me…It all comes back to your ability to not give a crap. It all comes back to your ability to say NO, and do the OPPOSITE of what the “rule” or “convention” is.This is not something that is learned overnight. You need to practice. So, your homework for today?JUST SAY NO.Don’t apologize. Don’t clarify.Just start saying NO to EVERYTHING that isn’t getting you where you want to go in life.No is my favorite word in the English language, it truly is. Unlock the power of NO, TODAY, and report back to me tomorrow with your results.Or, don’t. You have the option to say “No”, remember :)Kale Get on the email list at thekaleletter.substack.com

Following Ep 171 about great patterns for baby knits and Ep 172 about good yarns for kids and baby knits, this week is a roundup of all the community feedback on both these subjects. I'm also asking for some suggestion on behalf of Kat, a lovely listener, who is undertaking a fairly arduous physical challenge. She'd appreciate some suggestions on how she can record this with an accompanying knitting project. All of the chat for this feedback occurred within the Shinybees Podcast Community. You can join for free at shinybees.com/community Kat's Project Hey Jo, do you remember the interview question 'What yarn would you take on a desert island'? I have a similar dilemma: I'm planning to embark on a long distance hiking journey from Belgium tot Santiago the Compostela (2400km). Not in one go, spread over different holidays. Not sure if I'll ever make it but I like the clear focus. I'll be starting hopefully in March with the first stretch from home to the south trough Belgium. That should fit in the current Corona regulations. Being a Knitter, I find myself contemplating the travel knitting almost as much as the actual walking :D I can't take a lot of yarn to keep weight down. I plan to take two projects: * A recreational lace shawl * A project that captures the memories of the journey day by day. Could be as simple as one garter ridge per km. Or I'm thinking some sort of modular knit with every small module representing a day. I don't really know what I want to track yet: weather (sun, rain, cold,...), feelings, distance, landscape. I don't think I can take colours to represent the different items because it's hard to predict how much yarn I would need per colour. Maybe texture is better. Anyone got ideas? Yarn, patterns, textures? Which items I could track? Yarns for Baby Knits Continued From the community, here are some further suggestions on great yarns for baby and kids knits. Helen Swann suggested Sheepjes Colour Crafter as a good alternative to Stylecraft DK. It's 100% acrylic, like Stylecraft DK, but squooshier, with a fair amount of drape. At £1.99 per 100g and in 94 shades, there's bound to be shades you will like. Wendy Dinnage has been knitting for a couple at work who are expecting a baby. They're vegan and very environmentally aware. Wendy decided to use Nurturing Fibres Eco Bamboo as it has great eco credentials. Patterns for Baby Knits A perennial favourite, Elizabeth Zimmerman's Baby Surprise Jacket from The Knitter's Almanac was suggested by Helen Talbot and Linda Hartley. Knitted With Love by Jane Ellison is a favourite of Nichola Nolan. It's currently out of print, but most of the patterns are available as single patterns from Purl and Jane. Nevis top-down cardigan from Marianna's Lazy Daisy Days was suggested by Laura Stephens. This designer also does some lovely preemie sizes too. Alison Naylor's favourite is the Overalls with Cable Detail and Dorothy Helen baby blanket by Oge Knitwear. Leafy Abby Blanket from Silk and Wool by Leyla Alieva was suggested by Maureen Bulger. She's knitted it a number of times and it's gone down really well. A couple of bonnet suggestions – from Anna Friberg, the Sunshine Bonnet by Katarina Lindhagen, and the Beloved Bonnet by Tin Can Knits was suggested by Laura Stephens. Jade Hawson, who is a new listener, did a fantastic Mosaic Blanket (Purl Soho) using a colour changing gradient yarn, which looks fab! Anna Jordan suggests the Gramps Cardigan by Tin Can Knits. Anna Grim likes to make Allsorts the Owls for new parents. Linda Hartley favours the Troublemaker Cardigan by Kathryn Folkerth.
