The hobby has changed. Prices have risen. More cards compete for your attention. Every sale becomes content. It is fair to miss what collecting used to feel like. But the hobby we have now gives collectors access to sales history, checklists, population reports, saved searches, auction archives, and people with years of knowledge.Access is no longer the edge. Judgment is.Brett explains why the modern hobby rewards proactive collectors and shares a system for making decisions with purpose. Build a collecting thesis. Assign a role to each source. Monitor the cards that matter. Record why you buy. Give yourself confidence to pass. The hobby you remember is not coming back in the same form. Mack Cheli introduces Grail Guard, his new white-glove transportation service designed to move valuable cards door to door without putting them into the traditional shipping system. We discuss what it would actually take for another grading company to compete, whether collectors themselves are standing in the way of change, and the relationship between grading accuracy and market value. Every company in the sports card industry says it supports collectors. The question is whether the collector has power inside the business. In this episode of Hobby Jobs, I break down five places where a collector-first approach becomes visible. What a company measures. How it rewards employees. Where it removes friction. How it responds when something breaks. Whether collector knowledge shapes decisions.I also share the story of Shane Walls, lead buyer at Indy Card Exchange. Shane bought a Tom Brady Black Prizm 1/1 for $600 and sold it years later for $96,000. The value of that story is not the return. It is the experience, relationships, and judgment that allowed Shane to act before the market agreed with him.Knowing cards is not enough to build a career in the hobby. Which cards should you sell before supply catches up? How many buyers exist for your card? What makes a card worth holding? Football Cards Are Up 380% since 2020. This Is Bigger Than Quarterbacks. When many collectors returned to football cards in 2020, the message was clear: only buy quarterbacks.Since January 1, 2020, the Card Ladder football index has increased 380.99%. That growth extends beyond one position.Pack and Brett separate collecting advice from resale advice. They examine why Barry Sanders and Jerry Rice lead their era, why the early 2000s still lack a settled card hierarchy, and how research creates opportunities for collectors willing to look beyond the current quarterback class. They also discuss the $414,800 Peyton Manning Gem Masters 1/1 sale, a $402,600 Bronko Nagurski, Jason Kelce, game-day rituals, saved-search cleanup, and the Football Card Podcast Pick'em League.Check out Card Ladder the official data partner of Stacking SlabsJoin the Football Card Podcast Pick 'Em League Follow The Football Card Podcast on Instagram for memes and stuff.Get your free copy of Collecting For Keeps: Finding Meaning In A Hobby Built On HypeGet exclusive content, promote your cards, and connect with other collectors who listen to the pod today by joining the Patreon: Join Stacking Slabs Podcast PatreonSign up for Hobby Jobs and The Weekly Rip for freeFollow Stacking Slabs: | Twitter | Instagram | Facebook | TiktokFollow Pack: | Instagram ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Eddie and Emily both were kinda going at each other's throats the other day making fun of each other's interests and hobbies. Well it seems like they both owe each other an apology when we go down the list of the trendiest hobbies and both of theirs seem to make it on! It was a Free Comedy Friday with Taylor Williamson who stayed with us for a whole hour! See him this weekend at the Comedy Store in La Jolla! We all know how much Eddie hates Gwyneth Paltrow. Well it seems like her business "GOOP" is coming to San Diego and Eddie is not happy about it...See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dr. Beckett and Hobby Hotline co-hosts Rich Klein and John Newman enjoy an unscripted chat-driven discussion. They examine market “pumping,” focusing on rising Star Wars card prices ahead of the franchise's 50th anniversary, and how first appearances and recognizable stars can drive a pecking order in value. The panel compares this to pricing dynamics like NFL quarterback contracts and debates voice-actor autographs. They discuss T206 set collecting, Wagner rarity, past sale prices, and why multiple Wagners hitting auction blocks can signal equilibrium or a potential market peak, referencing the 1980 surge in '52 Topps Mantles. They also consider whether a Yordan Álvarez Triple Crown would move the hobby, and how modern baseball trends depress batting-average value. 00:46 Hobby Hype and Pumping 01:43 Star Wars Anniversary Buzz 03:53 First Appearances and Autographs 04:41 T206 Wagner Market Talk 05:54 Why More Wagners Appear 10:35 Yordan Alvarez Triple Crown 12:49 Modern Hitting and Moneyball 16:04 Pitching Changes and Metrics

Thursday, August 27th: Apparently I've entered my “try new things” era.I've been thinking about why so many of us stop learning, experimenting, and picking up new hobbies once we become adults. I recently started getting into art, painting, drawing with markers, learning about different techniques, and I am OBSESSED. My entire algorithm is basically art now, I'm taking art classes this fall, and I genuinely can't remember the last time I was this excited to be a complete beginner at something.I'm also taking tennis lessons, attempting to actually get better at a new sport. We're talking about why hobbies and learning new skills are so important as adults, especially when they have absolutely nothing to do with being productive, making money, or being “good” at them.I'm also sharing why September is my personal New Year. With back-to-school season approaching, I'm thinking about how I want my fall routine to look: creating a better work schedule, intentionally leaving white space in my calendar, and getting back into a supplement routine that I can actually stick with. I'm sharing the five supplements I'm planning to take and why I'm keeping the routine simple.Plus, we're chatting about Apple's Education Store and pricing, some new Apple features that are absolutely blowing my mind and making me wish I could be a student again. The new MacBook Neo has been loaned to us and it's adorable, super approachable, and is the perfect starter laptop for Milo to begin learning the basics and getting comfortable using a computer before he eventually needs one for school.THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS!AquaOmega - For your daily dose of Omega-3's, go to myaquaomega.com/MOMROOM and use code MOMROOM for 20% off.Bellesa - Today's episode is sponsored by Bellesa Boutique! Technology has a larger role in the hobby than it did a year ago.The question is whether it solves problems collectors care about.Scott Lock and Ed Snider of InfernoRed Technology join me to discuss what they saw at The National. We examine Topps' digital redemption process, the use of AI inside hobby businesses, and where technology can remove friction from buying and selling cards.Scott and Ed also take us inside Enter the Inferno, where collectors presented products built from their experiences in the hobby. The future of hobby tech will not be defined by how much technology companies introduce. It will be defined by whether those tools improve the collector experience without removing the people, conversations, and search that make collecting matter.Check out the awesome software that InfernoRed Technology can build for you.Get your free copy of Collecting For Keeps: Finding Meaning In A Hobby Built On HypeStart your 7 day free trial of Stacking Slabs Patreon TodaySign up for Hobby Jobs and The Weekly Rip for freeFollow Stacking Slabs: | Twitter | Instagram | Facebook | Tiktok ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
A 1997 Metal Universe Michael Jordan Red PMG /100 BGS 8 sold for $1,473,988.80.The same copy sold for $480,000 in 2021 and $360,000 in 2023.This episode is not about deciding whether the buyer overpaid. It is about reading the signal.Brett explains why demand matters as much as scarcity, why one sale does not create a market price, and how money moves through a collecting category. What does this record mean for collectors working with budgets of $150, $1,500, or $15,000?The lesson is not to chase a PMG.It is to study which cards hold meaning, demand, and scarcity after the attention moves onCheck out the awesome software that InfernoRed Technology can build for you.Sign up for Hobby Jobs and The Weekly Rip for freeGet your free copy of Collecting For Keeps: Finding Meaning In A Hobby Built On HypeStart your 7 day free trial of Stacking Slabs Patreon Today[Distributed on Sunday] Sign up for the Stacking Slabs Weekly Rip Newsletter using this linkFollow Stacking Slabs: | Twitter | Instagram | Facebook | Tiktok ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Zach steps out of the host chair for this one. In a swap with Heather Shannon of Sex for Couples, Zach is the guest, and the conversation goes straight at a question most couples never ask out loud: what is sex actually for, and does that answer change over the life of a marriage? Zach, who's been married almost thirty years, and Heather dig into why frequency becomes the default target when quality and clarity would serve couples better. The conversation moves through the different eras a long marriage passes through, the anthropological reasons couples tend to hit a reset every few years, and the idea that any long marriage is really four or five different marriages stitched together. Zach shares specific, practical scenes from his own relationship, including a three hour float down a river with his wife where they talked about sex without ever touching, and describes a couple in his practice who solved their standoff by simply negotiating who gets what on which night. Heather brings in patterns she sees in her own client work, particularly the tendency to take sexual disconnection personally and the exhausting decision fatigue around initiating. Together they name two questions Zach uses to open nearly every session on this topic: what's it for, and what counts. The takeaway isn't a technique. It's a shift in framing, from sex as an obligation or a performance with a pass or fail outcome, to sex as something couples can actually get better at on purpose, the same way they'd get better at any skill they cared about. For anyone who's felt the pressure of "we should be having more sex" without ever stopping to ask what sex is supposed to accomplish, this conversation gives language for that gap, and permission to define it differently.Key TakeawaysFrequency is the wrong target. The better question is whether the sex you're having is actually good, and whether you're willing to get better at it on purpose.Sex is a skill, not a talent you either have or don't. It can be learned, practiced, and improved the same way any hobby can.Ask "what counts?" Narrow definitions of sex (intercourse only, simultaneous orgasm only) create a lot of ways to fail and very few ways to succeed.Intimacy is broader than sex. Physical closeness that isn't sexual, and sexual conversation that isn't physical, both count and both matter.Spontaneity is a myth for anything you actually care about. Couples plan meals, workouts, and sleep. Sex deserves the same intentionality. When you don't want sex, get specific about what you don't want. It's rarely your partner. It's more often boredom, exhaustion, or feeling obligated.A long marriage isn't one marriage. It's several different eras, and checking in roughly every three years, with a therapist or a trusted person, helps couples pivot into the next one.The most durable relationship habit isn't avoiding conflict, it's getting good at repair, and doing more of what your partner likes while doing less of what they don't.Guest InfoThis episode centers on a conversation between Zach and Heather Shannon, LCPC, CST (she/her), an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist and host of the podcast Sex for Couples. Heather refers to working directly with clients around sex and communication in relationships throughout the conversation.Listen to Sex For Couples: podfollow.com/askasextherapistWebsite: HeatherShannon.coSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
