The Nats made one final trade in the closing minutes of the trade deadline on Tuesday evening. Mark (From Phoenix) & Al though begin with a player not dealt away, All-Star closer Kyle Finnegan, and react to Mike Rizzo's comments on why the right-hander stayed in Washington. The hosts layout the potential scenarios that are next for Finnegan as he is under team control in 2025. (14:00) Dylan Floro was sent to Arizona in exchange for corner infielder Andres Chaparro as their final move before the deadline. Chaparro is having a strong offensive season in AAA and might project to a future DH. Floro was signed to a one year deal in the off-season and in four months with the Nationals his WHIP was at a solid 1.05. (19:00) There were rumors online that the Nats were vying to trade for Cardinals OFer Dylan Carlson. Any truth to them? (22:00) The Nationals made four trades this month (Harvey, Thomas, Floro, and Winker) and the hosts discuss the best acquisitions made by the organization. (25:00) As for the game on Tuesday, it was the worst loss in franchise history as they lost 17-0 at the Diamondbacks. Patrick Corbin had another awful outing by allowing eleven runs in only three innings of work. (35:30) Travis Blankenhorn was called from AAA_Rochester to fill an open roster. Blankenhorn briefly played in Washington last season and is likely a place holder until Dylan Crews eventually gets promoted. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The Washington Nationals have traded Lane Thomas to the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for three prospects, including 19-year-old left-hander Alex Clemmey. Thomas, who has been a key player for the Nationals since 2021, leaving behind an impressive record, has been a fan favorite and clubhouse leader. The Nationals received highly rated prospects, including Clemmey, Rafael Ramirez Jr., and Jose Tena in the trade. Following the trade, the Nationals' lineup will see adjustments, including starting Alex Call in right field and possibly calling up Travis Blankenhorn from Triple-A Rochester. Lane Thomas expressed surprise at the trade but is now focusing on contributing to the Cleveland Guardians despite his initial disappointment at leaving a non-contending team in Washington.
The Nats lost 8-5 in extras on Friday night to visiting Miami for their 5th defeat in the past 6 games. Adding additional insult to the evening is that the Mets beat Seattle to move back in front of Washington by a half game. Al & Mark recap the 11 inning defeat; which required 6 IP by 6 different relievers. (17:15) The Nationals slugged 3 dingers on Friday and one of them came from Travis Blankenhorn in his first game since getting called up by Rochester. He hit 5th playing LF and this season had a OPS of .877 in AAA. Lane Thomas & CJ Abrams also went deep in the loss. (30:00) Josiah Gray is still slated to start Sunday after a throwing a monitored bullpen session. There will be a lot of attention to his next start after he had a very poor August. (34:30) Mike Rizzo still has not officially signed an extension despite the expectation that he will do so. Where do the negotiations stand between the GM and the franchise? Seth Stohs of TwinsDaily.com interviews players from the Minnesota Twins organization. Travis Blankenhorn is a top hitting prospect who hit 19 home runs in 2019. LaMonte Wade made his major-league debut in 2019 and played a lot for the Twins in the final month. The players discuss their 2019 seasons on the field, what they learned about themselves and spoke of some special moments in their careers.
Travis Blankenhorn, a Pottsville alum, is on his quest to become a professional baseball player. He's currently in the Minnesota Twins organization, playing Single A ball in Cedar Rapids. More importantly, I ask him what he likes more Palermo's or Roma.
Seth Stohs of TwinsDaily.com is back with another episode in which he'll chat with several Minnesota Twins prospects as well as a senior on the Minnesota Gophers baseball squad. This week, he'll be joined by two members of the 2017 draft class, a prospect acquired by the Twins at the trade deadline, and a toolsy prospect with plenty of upside. Here are the guests: Alex Boxwell is a senior outfielder for the University of Minnesota. The Coon Rapids native hit .253/.329/.438 (.767) with a double, four triples and six home runs. LHP Bryan Sammons was the Twins 10th round pick in 2017 out of Western Carolina University. After seven games with Elizabethton, he moved up to Cedar Rapids where he made five starts and a relief appearance before the end of his pro debut season. Another left-hander from the 2017 draft class is Hawaiian Ryley Widell who the Twins took with their 7th round pick out of Central Arizona. He debuted with Elizabethton where he struck out 41 batters in 29.2 innings. The Twins received RHP Zack Littell along with LHP Dietrich Enns in exchange for LHP Jaime Garcia before the July trade deadline. He was an impressive 20-1 (counting a playoff win for Chattanooga) in 2017 and was Minor League Baseball's Starting Pitcher of the Year. After the season, he was added to the Twins 40-man roster. He attended Twins Fest this past weekend. Travis Blankenhorn was another Twins Fest participant this week. He spent the 2017 season in Cedar Rapids where he hit .251/.343/.441 (.784) with 22 doubles, 11 triples and 13 home runs. He also stole 13 bases, including a dramatic steal of home!
The Twins are just 3-7 since the calendar turned to June, and Eric and Paul are a little cranky they don't have better baseball to talk about. With all of the losing, some of the Twins' warts are starting to show, and the Twins made a flurry of roster moves involving Eddie Rosario, Jorge Polanco, Kennys Vargas, Danny Santana, Tim Stauffer and Michael Tonkin. Plus we're joined this week by Jeremy Nygaard from TwinsDaily.com and the kinda maybe sorta defunct Hangout and Talk Twins (Twins Hangout) podcast to review all things draft, including Tyler Jay (6th overall), Kyle Cody (73rd) and a couple of high-upside HS bats Travis Blankenhorn (80) and Trey Cabbage (110). All of that, plus an Ethan Mildren reference on this week's Talk to Contact.
