In 1994, 17-year-old Lamonte McIntyre was arrested hours after a double homicide in Kansas City, Kansas — a crime he had nothing to do with. There was no physical evidence and no real investigation. What there was: a detective with a grudge against Lamonte's mother, a prosecutor who apparently knew her witnesses were lying, and a judge allegedly "involved" with that prosecutor. Undoing all those wrongs took 23 years. This week, Investigative Journalists ⁠⁠Mandy Matney⁠⁠ and ⁠Liz Farrell⁠⁠ sit down with Miracle of Innocence co-founder Lamonte McIntyre to talk about being swallowed by a system built to protect itself — the moment two strangers pointed at him in a courtroom, the years he refused to wear a prison ID, and the day a prosecutor finally stood up and dropped every charge. My buddy Lamonte lives by three words, 'Be great today,' and I break down why those words hit differently when you understand what a mantra actually is at its root. This is not about positive thinking or wishful optimism. It is about pairing expectation with deliberate action and recognizing that you are the common denominator in every outcome in your life. If you have been waiting on the right circumstances to show up, this episode is the reminder that you are the reason things fall into place. Not only was Lamonte well known for singing with the superstar group, the 5th Dimension, he was a photographer for Ebony and Jet Magazines for over 40 years. Lamonte was the first African American athlete to try out for the St. Louis Cardinals. After he moved to Los Angeles, he was a minor league strong-arm pitcher with the Los Angeles Dodgers for a short time. Lamonte McLemore was definitely part of Black History. We last recorded in between trades, but we break down the Yaz and Doval trades from last week. All in all, the Giants received eight players for the three they traded away, and with Yaz and Rogers being free agents of the end of the year, it made sense to exchange rentals for potential future talent. But, it is weird seeing Yaz in Royal Blue, Rogers in the throwback Mets unis, and Doval in Yankee grey. Posey also played with all three, and he admitted it was tough making that phone call to his former teammates. As far as their performance on the field, they followed up a horrible 0-6 homestand with a 4-2 road record against the same Mets and Pirates. With the focus on the future seasons, no one is holding their breath that the Giants will make a run at the wildcard, a position they solidly held for the entire season until a few weeks ago. That said, it will be a good opportunity to showcase new blood in the majors and minors. Bryce Eldridge is HOT in Sacramento, blasting four bombs in his last three games, but Posey said they aren't rushing him up. And...the first female umpire in MLB history will be working the plate during the second game of a double header this Sunday in Atlanta. It's crazy that this hasn't happened sooner, especially with female officials in the NBA and NFL. We also ponder what happened to LaMonte Wade Jr's ability to hit a baseball, as he was released by the Angels over the weekend. The San Francisco Giants already made one high-profile extension during the 2023 season, agreeing to terms on a deal with Logan Webb that tacked on three more years to the three years he was already under club control. When it comes to J.D. Davis, LaMonte Wade Jr., and Thairo Estrada, should the Giants consider doing the same thing? Davis is two years from free agency, Wade is three years away, and Estrada is four years away. So the most urgent case, if they view him as a big part of their future, would be with Davis. It's also worth asking whether Casey Schmitt, Patrick Bailey, or any other prospects (like Kyle Harrison, Luis Matos, and/or Marco Luciano should be under consideration for extensions. This is an updated episode that originally aired on September 25, 2017. On the afternoon of April 15th, 1994, two men were sitting in a powder-blue Cadillac in the Quindaro neighborhood of Kansas City, KS. A man dressed in black ran up to the passenger side, raised a shotgun and fired four rounds in what looked like a drug-related hit, killing the two passengers Doniel Quinn and Donald Ewing. Lamonte McIntyre, who was 17 at the time, was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. The prosecution relied primarily on the testimonies of two eyewitnesses who identified Lamonte as the shooter. Both eyewitnesses later recanted.
