Coral Reefs Are Recovering Faster Than Scientists Expected

Speak Up For The Ocean Blue

Coral Reef Recovery is happening faster than many scientists once believed possible, but only under the right conditions. Long-term monitoring from the Caribbean and Indo Pacific shows that reefs can regain coral cover and rebuild three-dimensional structure when fishing pressure is reduced, water quality improves, and protections are enforced. The idea that reefs are doomed after bleaching events is being challenged by real data collected over decades. Reef Resilience Science reveals that recovery is not random. Areas with healthy herbivore populations, strong marine protected area enforcement, and fewer back to back heat stress events show measurable rebounds in coral recruitment and structural complexity. Studies published in Science and Nature Climate Change highlight that while climate change raises the baseline risk, local management decisions strongly influence whether reefs collapse or rebuild. Ocean Conservation Strategy becomes clearer when recovery case studies are compared to areas still declining. Flattening reefs are not inevitable; they are often the result of cumulative stress. When that stress is reduced, ecosystems respond. The evidence points to a simple but powerful conclusion: give reefs breathing room, and many of them fight their way back. Listen to the full episode. February 13th, 2026 | Should you invest by following when insiders buy? It's not a stock market, it's a market of stocks, Inflation report better than expected, Larger tax refunds? & More

    Smartinvesting2000

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 13, 2026 55:39

Should you invest by following when insiders buy? It sounds like it's an easy thing. Just do what the insiders do because they obviously know the company well and if the stock were to drop in value and the insiders commit to purchasing shares, it must be a smart investment. Unfortunately, it's not that easy and there are many other factors involved. Data also shows that longer term it may not even matter. Over my 45 years of doing this, I have even seen sometimes where they borrow money from the company to actually do the purchase of the shares. With that said when they are committing their own money, does the stock do well afterwards? The Wall Street Journal did an analysis of 1,400 publicly disclosed insider purchases using S&P 500 companies. Going back to 2020, they discovered insiders at 327 companies had a total of $3.7 billion in stock trades over $100,000. Most of the purchases were completed after a decline from the previous 30 days and produced a median gain of about 2% a month later but then began to decline after that. The numbers also showed that only 15% of the purchases fully recovered from where they had fallen in the previous 30 days before the share purchase. It should also be noted that they cannot act on insider information, so if there's something major that can move the stock either up or down, they would probably go to jail if they were to act upon it. In other words, since they can't act upon insider information, they don't have much of an advantage over someone doing a good amount of research about the company.   It's not a stock market, it's a market of stocks I have often made this claim when things get crazy in the stock market. What I mean by this is you don't just have to buy the stock market and instead can look for good companies within the market. The reason this is so important to understand is because individual stocks can still do well even when the broader market struggles, especially when the market gets heavily concentrated like it is today. I often reference the tech boom and bust as an example investors should study and in times like this, I believe it is even more applicable. From the tech-stock peak on March 27th, 2000, through the end of that year, the S&P 500 fell 13.4%. It is important to remember that the S&P 500 is a market-cap weighted index, which means the larger the company the more it makes up of the index. If we instead look at the equal-weighted S&P 500, where every company has essentially the same weighting, it actually gained 10.7% from March 27th through the end of 2000. Looking at specific sectors during that period, utilities, healthcare, and consumer staples were actually up about 40% to 45%, while tech fell 51.8%. It has been nice for many investors to enjoy the easy ride in the S&P 500 for the last decade plus, but I continue to believe that over the next 10 years the returns will be much more subdued in the index than investors have become accustomed to.    Inflation report comes in better than expected The Consumer Price Index, also known as CPI, showed headline January inflation was just 2.4%. This compares to an estimate of 2.5% and last month's reading of 2.7%. Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, came in line with expectations at 2.5%, but it was also lower than December's reading of 2.6% and the smallest increase since March 2021 when it climbed by just 1.6%. Food prices put a little pressure on the headline number as they were up 2.9% compared to last year. Most of this came from food away from home where prices were up 4.0%. Food at home on the other hand only saw prices climb 2.1%. Energy prices helped the headline number as prices declined 0.1% as gasoline prices fell 7.3%. Offsetting this benefit was utility prices where electricity was up 6.3% and utility gas service was up 9.8%. Many other areas saw muted price changes, and shelter continued to add pressure to both the headline and core CPI numbers. Even though the annual rate of 3.0% was lower than December's level of 3.2%, it is still above both the headline and core numbers. As a reminder, this is a huge weight at around 34-35% of headline CPI and over 40% of core CPI. If all else remains the same and shelter declines this year, I believe we could see that 2% target achieved. I was surprised to learn the Owner's Equivalent Rent (OER), which essentially measures the rate homeowners believe they could rent their house out for, carries most of the weight at over 70% of the shelter category. In January, the OER was up 3.3% while the actual rent of primary residence category was only up 2.8%.    Financial Planning: You May Be Receiving a Larger Refund New tax rules could help many filers see larger refunds this year, with some benefits happening automatically and others requiring careful reporting. The standard deduction increased for everyone, with taxpayers aged 65 or older receiving an additional $6,000 boost. The state and local tax (SALT) cap rose from $10,000 to $40,000 for those who itemize, and the child tax credit increased by $200, from $2,000 to $2,200. These automatic changes may lower tax liability without any special reporting. However, other deductions such as those for auto loan interest, overtime pay, and tip income must be properly reported to receive the full benefit. Taxpayers should review their returns carefully to ensure all available deductions and credits are captured. If a larger refund does show up, it may be a good time to update 2026 withholding elections to increase monthly take-home pay instead of waiting all year for next year's refund.   Companies Discussed: C.H. Robinson Worldwide, Inc. (CHRW), Cushman & Wakefield Limited (CWK), QUALCOMM Incorporated (QCOM) & PayPal Holdings, Inc. (PYPL)

Our Global Head of Fixed Income Research Andrew Sheets explains how key market indicators reflect a constructive view around the global cyclical outlook, despite a volatile start to 2026.Read more insights from Morgan Stanley.----- Transcript -----Andrew Sheets: Welcome to Thoughts on the Market. I'm Andrew Sheets, Global Head of Fixed Income Research at Morgan Stanley. Today I'm going to talk about the unusual alignment of a number of key indicators. It's Thursday, February 12th at 2pm in London. A frustrating element of investing is that any indicator at any time can let you down. That makes sense. With so much on the line, the secret to markets probably isn't just one of a hundreds of data series that a thousand of us can access at the push of a button. But many indicators all suggesting the same? That's far more notable. And despite a volatile start to 2026 with big swings in everything from Japanese government bonds to software stocks, it is very much what we think is happening below the surface. Specifically, a variety of indicators linked to optimism around the global cyclical outlook are all stronger, all moving up and to the right. Copper, which is closely followed as an economically sensitive commodity, is up strongly. Korean equities, which have above average cyclicality and sensitivity to global trade is the best performing of any major global equity market over the last year. Financials, which lie at the heart of credit creation, have been outperforming across the U.S., Europe, and Asia. And more recently, year-to-date cyclicals and transports are outperforming. Small caps are leading, breadth is improving, and the yield curve is bear steepening. All of these are the outcomes that you'd expect, all else equal, if global growth is going to be stronger in the future than it is today. Now individually, these data points can be explained away. Maybe Copper is just part of an AI build out story. Maybe Korea is just rebounding off extreme levels of valuation. Maybe Financials are just about deregulation in a steeper yield curve. Maybe the steeper yield curve is just about the policy uncertainty. And small cap stocks have been long-term laggards – maybe every dog has its day. But collectively, well, they're exactly what investors will be looking for to confirm that the global growth backdrop is getting stronger, and we believe they form a pretty powerful, overlapping signal worthy of respect. But if things are getting better, how much is too much. In the face of easier fiscal, monetary, and regulatory policy, the market may focus on other signposts to determine whether we now have too much of a good thing. For example, is there signs of significant inflation on the horizon? Is volatility in the bond market increasing? Is the U.S. dollar deviating significantly from its fair value? Is the credit market showing weakness? And do stocks and credit now react badly when the data is good? So far, not yet. As we discussed on this program last week, long run inflation expectations in the U.S. and euro area remain pretty consistent with central bank targets. Expected volatility in U.S. interest rates has actually fallen year-to-date. The U.S. dollar's valuation is pretty close to what purchasing power parity would suggest. Credit has been very stable. And better than expected labor market data on Wednesday was treated well. Any single indicator can and eventually will let investors down. But when a broad set of economically sensitive signals all point in the same direction, we listen. Taken together, we think this alignment is still telling a story of supportive fundamental tailwinds while key measures of stress hold. Until that evidence changes, we think those signals deserve respect. Thank you as always, for your time. If you find Thoughts on the Market useful, let us know by leaving a review wherever you listen. And also tell a friend or colleague about us today.

    1. The Case at the Supreme Court The case is Trump v. Vos Selections, argued on Nov. 5, 2025. Small businesses are challenging Trump-era tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). 2. Central Legal Questions Does IEEPA’s power to “regulate imports” include authority to impose tariffs? Did Congress delegate too much taxing authority to the President?→ This triggers two major constitutional doctrines: Non‑Delegation Doctrine – Congress cannot hand over core lawmaking powers (like taxation) without clear limits. Major Questions Doctrine – Major economic or political actions require explicit congressional authorization. 3. Constitutional Tension Article I, Section 8 gives Congress the power to: Lay and collect taxes/tariffs Regulate commerce with foreign nations Tariffs sit at the intersection of foreign policy (executive power) and taxation (legislative power). 4. Oral Argument Themes Justices skeptical of Trump’s argument: Roberts – Concerned tariffs are fundamentally taxes on Americans, which is Congress’s domain. Gorsuch & Barrett – Pressed the need for clear statutory limits; worried about unchecked executive authority. Justices leaning toward upholding the tariffs: Kavanaugh – Emphasized long history of broad presidential discretion in foreign affairs. Thomas – Focused on historical practice of using tariffs as trade tools. Alito – Concerned about practical impacts and the large reliance interests ($133B already collected). 5. Predicted Outcome (from the document’s speaker) Expected ruling: 5–4 in favor of Trump, upholding tariff authority. Predicted majority: Roberts, Thomas, Alito, Kavanaugh + either Barrett or Gorsuch. Reasoning: Court is reluctant to disrupt years of foreign policy and economic decisions already relying on the tariffs. Institutional stability concerns—similar to Roberts’ reasoning in the Affordable Care Act case. Please Hit Subscribe to this podcast Right Now. Ghislaine Maxwell appeared for a congressional deposition today and immediately invoked her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination, refusing to answer substantive questions from lawmakers. According to members of Congress, Maxwell delivered a brief, prepared statement at the outset and then systematically declined to respond to questions about Jeffrey Epstein's operations, potential co-conspirators, powerful associates, or her own role in facilitating abuse. The deposition, conducted as part of Congress's oversight inquiry into the Epstein case, was expected by many to yield insight into long-unanswered questions, but instead unfolded as a near-total assertion of constitutional silence.By pleading the Fifth across the board, Maxwell effectively shut down Congress's ability to extract testimony while insulating herself from potential legal exposure tied to ongoing appeals and post-conviction litigation. Lawmakers publicly acknowledged that her refusal to testify was legally permissible but deeply frustrating, particularly given her central role in Epstein's criminal enterprise and the public interest in full disclosure. The outcome reinforced a familiar pattern in the Epstein saga: key insiders appearing under oath, yet declining to provide answers, leaving Congress with another formal record of silence rather than clarity about how Epstein's network operated and who enabled it.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Ghislaine Maxwell deposition: Fifth Amendment plea sparks outrage
