The Detroit Tigers had a 4-2 record this week, sweeping the Arizona Diamondbacks and dropping a series to the Philadelphia Phillies — but the biggest news came off the field: Reese Olson is out for the regular season (and possibly the postseason) with a shoulder injury. Evan Petzold — joined by "Locked On Tigers" host Scott Bentley — take a deep dive into the trade deadline: Did Scott Harris make the right call by prioritizing quantity over quality? And is he making a mistake by not capitalizing on the Tarik Skubal window? Washington Nationals beat writer Andrew Golden, who works for the Washington Post, joins "Days of Roar" to introduce Tigers fans to new reliever Kyle Finnegan, whom the Tigers acquired from the Nationals at the trade deadline. After talking to Golden, Petzold and Bentley debate: Who gets the ball in the biggest moment — Finnegan, Will Vest or Tommy Kahnle? We also discuss Reese Olson's injury history and Troy Melton's move to the bullpen. Follow Evan on X/Twitter here. Read Evan's most recent work here

In this episode of The Talk Nats Podcast, Dan Holmi dives into the Nationals' looming trade deadline situation, highlighting names like Kyle Finnegan, Michael Soroka, Nathaniel Lowe, and Luis García Jr. as potential trade chips. With GM Mike Rizzo's track record of savvy deals—from flipping Hunter Harvey for a comp draft pick and top catching prospect Caleb Lomavita, to past steals like Lane Thomas for Jon Lester—Dan explains why fans should brace for short-term pain in exchange for long-term gain. The team might look worse in the second half, but if Rizzo hits on even one or two of these deals, the future could look a lot brighter, especially with teams like the Red Sox and Tigers lurking. Dan also breaks down Davey Martinez's fiery defense of his coaching staff, a viral quote that turned heads after a rough offensive stretch. While Davey says the “onus is on the players,” Dan explains why it's more complicated than that—coaches can't hit, pitch, or field, but they're responsible for putting players in a position to succeed. The show wraps with a breakdown of MacKenzie Gore's recent outing against Clayton Kershaw, showcasing how the Nats' defensive miscues undermined an otherwise strong performance and illustrating the sharp divide between a playoff-tested Dodgers club and a rebuilding Washington team. The Nats losing streak extended to nine games on Monday night as victory slipped through their fingertips in the 6-4 defeat. Mark & Al begin with Kyle Finnegan, who inherited a one run lead in the top of the 9th, but allowed a pair of Rockies homers, the only home runs he has given up this season.(09:00) Brady House went 0 for 3 with a walk in his MLB debut.  House was the #11 overall pick in the 2021 Draft and had a OPS of .872 this season thus far in AAA-Rochester. House looked comfortable defensively and Davey Martinez said pregame that House will be the everyday 3B.(14:40) Daylen Lile hit his first career MLB homer in the bottom of the 5th in his first game since returning from AAA. Lile swapped roster spots with Robert Hassell III after Sunday's defeat.(18:00) James Wood's 2-run HR in the bottom of the 5th put Washington ahead 4-3 until the fateful 9th inning. Wood is now up 18 homers on the season; which is tied for 5th most in the NL.(20:15) Riley Adams got the nod at catcher and is now 0 for his last 30 at the plate. His OPS is down to a paltry .325 and the catching situation continues to worsen for the franchise.(23:15) Jake Irvin gave up a 2-run HR in the top of the 1st and his opening frame ERA is a shocking 10.84; surprisingly more than his Mitchell Parker. Lile hit .194 in 31 at-bats in his brief stint in Washington.(18:20) Michael Soroka ended his outing well unlike previous ones as he struck out seven Rangers in six scoreless innings of work.(22:45) Brad Lord tossed another scoreless inning in a high leverage spot in the top of the 7th. Lord has not allowed a run in six consecutive appearances.  Kyle Finnegan took over for him in the 9th and notched his 17th save of the year.(17:35) The offense was carried by bench guys in the victory as the RBIs belonged to Amed Rosario & Nasim Nuñez.  Rosario homered in the bottom of the 7th to put Washington on the board and Nuñez doubled in the 8th for some insurance.(24:10) An update on Mason Thompson, who is working his way back from a 2nd Tommy John surgery.(30:00) Josh Whetzel, the Voice of the Rochester Red Wings, gives the latest on Brady House, Cade Cavalli, and more from AAA.

The Nats won their 5th straight on Thursday night as they outlasted the Braves 8-7 in extra innings. Mark & Al focus on the completely flipped script for the Nationals in the past week; as they recently had lost seven games in a row.  Amed Rosario was the 10th inning hero as his pinch-hit RBI single ended the affair.(07:20) Robert Hassell III had quite the MLB debut as he singled in his first at bat, stole a base, collected two hits, and scored the winning run on Rosario's RBI single. Hassell got the nod in CF and hit 7th in the lineup.(10:00) Dylan Crews is on the IL due to an oblique injury; not a back issue. Jacob Young did not play on Thursday and it is unclear if too might be headed to the IL as he has not played since crashing into the Camden Yards wall on Saturday.(16:00) James Wood' big game was overshadowed, but nonetheless impressive as he reached base four times. Wood' big hit of the night came in the bottom of the 2nd on his 3-run double to take a 5-2 lead.(17:10) Keibert Ruiz had a big eveningin front of his parents, who saw him play in person for the first time in his professional career.  Ruiz's family traveled to D.C. from his native Venezuela for the occasion.(20:00) The bullpen mostly came through in their heavy workload on Thursday night. Six relievers were needed to toss over six frames and only allowed two runs in the process. Kyle Finnegan though did blow the save in the top of the 9th, but in his defense Jose Tena committed a crucial error to extend the game.(28:10) Trevor Williams had another poor start as he was yanked in the 4th inning. Williams was charged with five runs allowed and his ERA is now up to 6.39.  Will he get moved out of the starting rotation?

The Nats won their 4th straight on Tuesday night as they topped the visiting Braves 5-3. Al & Mark have a lot to get to as Dylan Crews homered in the victory, but was removed mid-game because of a back issue, and that means Robert Hassell III is getting called up from AAA-Rochester. Hassell is one of the pieces from the 2022 Juan Soto trade with the San Diego Padres.(05:50) Jacob Young did not play for a second straight game due to crashing his shoulder into the Camden Yards' wall on Saturday. It is unclear if Young or Crews will be headed to the IL, and that likely will be decided after Crews' MRI on Wednesday morning.(10:00) Hassell's OPS is at .742 this season with four homers. He had a pair of doubles on Tuesday night in Syracuse prior to getting informed that he is headed to Washington.(14:30) The Nats offense continued their recent string of hot starts by scoring three runs right away against Atlanta's Spencer Strider.  They totaled eight hits in the win, but also had multiple terrible base running mistakes.(18:10) Mitchell Parker's outing was marred by a bad top of the 2nd where he gave up all three of his runs.  It was the 5th consecutive Parker start that was not classified as "good".(20:15) The bullpen teamed up for nearly four scoreless innings.  Kyle Finnegan punctuated the effort with a clean 1-2-3 inning for his 15th save of the year, which leads all of MLB.(26:10) Per the Washington Post, the team's Chief Revenue Officer and the Chief Marketing Officer left their positions earlier this month.  What does that mean in the bigger picture or isolated personnel moves?

The Nats immediately jumped out to a 6-0 edge on their way to Saturday's 10-6 victory at Camden Yards. Mark (From Baltimore) & Al convene after the Nationals third win in the past four days and their 2nd in a row at the Orioles. (04:30) Jacob Young crashed into the wall in the 7th and exited the game. X-rays were negative and it seems like no major injury was incurred. (08:00) Washington dominated Kyle Gibson in the opening inning by batting around and scoring six runs. The first out did not come until the 7th hitter and Young concluded the hit parade with a RBI triple. (12:20) Keibert Ruiz had a pair of hits, including a RBI double. Ruiz's OPS is .700 and is playing better defense than last season. (15:45) Despite entering the bottom of the 9th with a 10-2 lead, Kyle Finnegan had to warm up while Zach Brzykcy mightily struggled to get the final three outs. (18:15) Update on Derek Law, who has been on the IL all season due to right forearm inflammation. (22:00) Jake Irvin gave up five hits and allowed two runs in just over six innings of work. Irvin's ERA currently sits at 3.88, but Al notes the continuing trend of his declining velocity. (26:30) Brandon Hyde was fired as Orioles Manager on Saturday morning as they are in last place. Hyde & Davey Martinez worked together for years in Chicago, including when the Cubs won the 2016 World Series. Hyde took over in Baltimore; one season after Martinez came to D.C.

The Nats rallied in the top of the 9th, but couldn't make it to extras in Monday night's 4-3 loss in Atlanta.  Mark & Al dig into the decision to not use Kyle Finnegan in the bottom of the 9th, where it was tied 3-3. Jackson Rutledge initially stayed in the game, but then was relieved by Andrew Chafin as opposed to Finnegan.  The All-Star closer has not pitched since Game 1 of last Tuesday's doubleheader.(15:30) Jake Irvin gave up three runs off of seven hits in six innings of work.  Al points out the troubling trend regarding Irvin's strikeouts, as he only had one on Monday night.(20:35) James Wood chopped his 1th homer of the season, but it was another quiet day at the plate for his teammates.  Washington went 0 for 7 with RISP and struggled against Braves starter Grant Holmes.(27:10) The six game losing streak is now the longest in MLB and it seems that they are playing form behind every game. Michael Soroka takes the mound against his original team on Tuesday night.

The Nats opened the doubleheader vs. Cleveland with their 3rd straight win, but that momentum was halted just a few hours later. Mark & Al reluctantly begin again with the bullpen, who overall had an awful Tuesday at the ballpark.  They inherited a 6-2 lead in Game 1, but the Guardians immediately scored six runs in the top of the 7th.  The offense bailed them out and then Kyle Finnegan notched his 100th career save.(7:10) The Nationals were trailing when Brad Lord departed Game 2, but the 'pen still managed to give up five runs in only three innings of work. Lucas Sims allowed three runs and his ERA is now up to 12.34.(14:30) Jake Irvin continued his season long trend of having his roughest inning in the top of the 1st. Irvin was pulled in the 6th and Al offers a suggestion of how the organization should consider handling his future starts.(17:30) Lord had a good outing, but all signs are pointing to him moving back to the bullpen once Michael Soroka returns from the IL on Wednesday.  Lord began the season as a reliever before he was thrust into the rotation due to surrounding injuries.(27:00) The offense came through with ten hits in the Game 1 victory.  James Wood went deep with a 2-run shot for his 10th homer of the year.  Dylan Crews had a RBI double to tie the game in the bottom of the 7th; shortly after the bullpen coughed up the lead.(29:30) The bats were quiet in Game 2, Riley Adams solo HR was the only source of scoring.  Josh Bell returned to the lineup after missing three straight games and went hitless in the cleanup spot.  The bright spot came from CJ Abrams as he drew a trio of walks in the leadoff spot. Abrams has played at a level where he might return to the All-Star Game this summer.(36:40) Josh Whetzel, the Voice of the Rochester Red Wings, gives Nats Chat an exclusive report on what is happening at AAA.

The timing is rather interesting as his rotation spot is at stake if Michael Soroka returns from the IL in the near future.(18:45) The bullpen came through for Lord as three relievers combined for four scoreless frames.  Jose A. Ferrer tossed two innings, Jorge Lopez pitched the 8th, and Kyle Finnegan bounced back with his 10th save of the season, the 2nd most in the NL.(25:00) The Nationals made their first bullpen transaction post Opening Day as they signed veteran Andrew Chafin and DFA'd Colin Poche. Chafin has been in the majors since 2014 and has a career ERA of 3.42. The lefty pitched well for AAA-Toledo last month before signing a major league deal with the Nats.(30:00) The road trip moves this weekend to Cincinnati for a three game set.  Mitchell Parker will start the opener on Friday night vs. Hunter Greene.   The Reds are 17-15 overall and are in 2nd place in their division.

Al & Tim have plenty to recap from the exciting evening in DC, including the Nationals pulling off a triple play for the first time in Navy Yard.(05:45) CJ Abrams scored the winning run in dramatic fashion as he came around all the way from first base on a James Wood single.  Abrams also tripled earlier in the game; his first hit since returning form the IL.(08:05) Dylan Crews had one of his best games yet as he scored three runs in the win.  Crews manufactured an early run by capitalizing on a mental mistake by Brandon Nimmo that unexpectedly put him in scoring position. Crews also tripled in the 9th as Juan Soto was unable to make the play in RF.(13:45) Jake Irvin was excellent as he pitched into the top of the 8th and did not allow a run through the initial seven innings. Irvin had a slow start to the season and has been able to drop his ERA down to 3.19.(18:00) Jose A. Ferrar allowed three runs after taking over for Irvin in the top of the 8th.  Kyle Finnegan gave up the big hit of the inning as Crews could not make a diving grab that led to a bases clearing triple by Mark Vientos.(26:00) Brady House hit his 4th homer of the AAA season and his OPS is at .877.

The most pivotal one was Nathaniel Lowe's pinch-hit 3 run double that gave Washington a 5-4 lead in the 8th. Lowe was a late scratch from the starting lineup due to illness and later persevered through a 10 pitch at bat for the big hit.(10:45) James Wood homered for the fourth time in the past four games. Wood hit a towering shot in the top of the 9th to give the Nats much needed insurance.(12:40) Bell put Washington on the board with a 2 run HR in the top of the 6th.  Bell was moved to 1B after Lowe was a late scratch and that ultimately led to Alex Call taking over in LF for the DHing James Wood.  Call took advantage as he drew four walks and had a RBI double for the final run.(20:00) Mitchell Parker did not have a good outing, but the team is nonetheless 3-0 when he starts this season.  Parker gave up four runs in the bottom of the 5th and his poor defensive mechanics were a major culprit.(24:30) The bullpen finally had a game without surrendering a run in 2025. Lucas Sims walked the tightrope in his lone inning and Kyle Finnegan overcame a leadoff double to secure the save.(28:45) This was game one of a ten game road trip in three different cities.  They can reach .500 with a victory on Saturday vs. Sandy Alcantara as they currently sit at 6-7.
