A San Francisco Giants offense that was already looking questionable is without two of its likely Opening Day starters. LaMonte Wade Jr. and Evan Longoria will start the season on the injured list. Where should the Giants go from here? Neither injury looks to be extremely serious, with Longoria having a minor surgery on his right index finger that will lead to him immobilizing the finger for at least 10 days. Wade Jr. has swelling and a bone bruise in his knee, and he will be re-evaluated in 10 days. It's not like the Giants to make big, reactionary moves in a panic, so don't expect major changes because of these injuries. However, it's clear that the Giants' depth is already being stretched thin and the season hasn't even started. Michael Conforto is still a free agent, José Ramírez may be available in a trade, and there are several other options the Giants could turn to in order to fill these voids. Also discussed is the announcement that Logan Webb will be the Giants' Opening Day starter. For Webb, he joins other homegrown starters such as Madison Bumgarner, Tim Lincecum, and Matt Cain to get the Opening Day nod. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

It's a make-or-break month for Mauricio Dubón and Tyler Beede. The San Francisco Giants have several out-of-options players who must perform, or risk being traded or designated for assignment. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listners about the state of the SF Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are: How many of the fringe players without options will make the team? Any trades that you see with the ones that don't make it, or do they just get DFA'd? Thoughts on LaMonte Wade Jr. building off of last year? Or will he come back down to earth in 2022? Why aren't teams signing Michael Conforto? He's coming off one bad year in which the underlying metrics still looked good. He should be willing to accept a short, prove it deal. At this point would you say the Giants are out on him given the Joc Pederson addition? Should we be concerned about the lineup after not much additions during free agency, and the loss of Buster Posey, Kris Bryant, and Donovan Solano? Does Michael Conforto still make sense for the San Francisco Giants?

Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants

For an SF Giants team in need of more thump, why not Michael Conforto? Yes, he would add to an already crowded left-handed outfield mix, but the addition of the DH in the National League should make the fit possible. LaMonte Wade Jr. could play left, Mike Yastrzemski could play center, and Conforto could play right against right-handed pitching. This would allow Joc Pederson so slide into the DH spot on most days against righties. Darin Ruf might not get his opportunity to be an everyday player right away, but is that really such a bad thing? He would be their top weapon off the bench every single night, and he would hit in the middle of the lineup every time they face a lefty. Against lefties, Ruf could start in left, Austin Slater in center, and Conforto in right (as one of the Giants' few everyday players, along with Brandon Belt, Brandon Crawford, and Evan Longoria). ESPN predicted when the offseason began that Conforto would command a three-year, $51 million deal, which host Ben Kaspick thinks is extremely reasonable for a player of his caliber, particularly given that he's just 29 years old. Ben thinks a deal like that with multiple opt outs could make sense for both sides. A one-year deal is also a possibility at this point for Conforto, who has some questions about his vaccination status, which could be holding up his market. Teams in the AL East are wary of signing unvaccinated players, since they won't be allowed to travel to Toronto under current Canadian law. One more consideration: Conforto rejected the qualifying offer from the Mets, meaning he would cost the Giants their second-highest draft pick in 2022 (roughly 65th overall). Ben thinks that shouldn't be prohibitive and that Conforto should still be a priority. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Final segment of the hour, we discuss the rumor that NY will drop the vaccine mandates this coming Thursday, which would be great for Kyrie and the Nets as well as the Mets & Yankees. We also talk about NFL QBs and the salaries and how much teams are willing to pay.    Hour 4: We start the hour talking about the Browns and Deshaun Watson and his contract. Boomer looks at that contract and wonders what the Ravens will do with Lamar Jackson. The Browns have gone through tons of QBs over the years. Boomer thinks Matt Ryan will do well with the Colts. Boomer likes the Jets offseason moves so far. There has been a lot of QB movement in the NFL and we're not done yet. Baker Mayfield will go somewhere. The Deshaun Watson contract shows how desperate the Browns are. Jerry's back for his final update of the day. Leonard Fournette is headed back to the Bucs. Gene Deckerhoff, the voice of the Bucs and Florida State, announces his retirement. KD and the Nets beat the Jazz and Jerry has audio from Ian Eagle. Max Scherzer pitched for the Mets yesterday and he reacted to that. Final segment on this Tuesday, we talk about Al Michaels to Amazon and how Kevin Burkhardtwill now be the number one guy at Fox. A caller said he thinks he saw the Tom Seaver statue on the back of a truck headed up to Citi Field. Boomer is pissed it took the Mets this long to get a statue for Seaver.

Hour 2:   The 7am hour begins with talk of QBs and the upcoming NFL draft. Gio says there doesn't seem to be a big name in this draft. Boomer talks about watching QB Kenny Pickett's pro day yesterday. Which teams need to draft a QB this year? Giants will try to win with Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor. Jerry returns for an update. Gio tells us that Mike Francesa is starting a new podcast. Gio wonders if Anthony Gallo is going to work for him. Jerry's update starts with Matt Ryan to the Colts. The Nets beat the Jazz last night. Jerry says the Nets have a problem closing out games. Jerry has more from around the NBA. Jerry plays a clip from Sal Licata last night when a caller talked about guys putting things in other guy's lockers. In the final segment of the hour, they discuss Max Scherzer throwing 72 pitches yesterday, which seems like a lot. They also discuss deGrom and his future earnings. Nobody has signed Michael Conforto yet. Gio blames Scott Boras for that because he's unrealistic.

What's left for the San Francisco Giants? Seiya Suzuki and Kyle Schwarber signed new deals this morning, neither with the Giants. Suzuki ended up landing a five-year, $85 million deal from the Cubs ($100M with posting fees), and Schwarber got 4/$79 million from the Phillies. Where do the SF Giants go from here? On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick details the state of the free agent market. He analyzes the trends in the market so far: it's generally been inflated, with players signing for far more years and higher AAV's than predicted. He explores the remaining free agent market, and goes into detail on players like Tommy Pham, Joc Pederson, and Jorge Soler. He also reiterates that Michael Conforto, Kris Bryant, Nick Castellanos, and perhaps even Trevor Story continue to make sense for the Giants. Farhan Zaidi said yesterday that Tommy La Stella may miss the beginning of the season while rehabbing Achilles surgery, so the Giants are targeting a second baseman. There are lots of options on the free agent market, with varying degrees of talent available. Finally, he explores the fantasy of the Giants signing Carlos Correa or Freddie Freeman. It's hard to see the fit for either player, but they're both special talents worth exploring. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Kris Bryant? Michael Conforto? Seiya Suzuki? Which big-name bats best fit the SF Giants?

Kris Bryant. Kyle Schwarber. Michael Conforto. Nick Castellanos. Trevor Story. Seiya Suzuki. The Giants seem poised to end up with at least one of these big-name bats—but which one? On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick breaks down each of the six remaining big-name hitters that could make sense for the San Francisco Giants. Bryant is indeed a big name, but Ben thinks his general decline is a major concern, especially when Bryant's contract is predicted to be in the 6-7 year range for over $20 million per season. Schwarber and Conforto make a lot of sense for the Giants, for different reasons. Schwarber is coming off a monster offensive season that looks sustainable. However, he's not a great defender and may be best suited for DH duties. Is that worth a multi-year commitment for $15M+? Conforto is coming off a down year and is looking to rebuild value; the Giants may seize the opportunity to buy low on a player who has been well-above-average for several years prior to 2021 and is still just 29 years old. Castellanos is an impact bat but questionable defender, and Ben thinks his tendency to chase out of the zone will be a turnoff for this front office. The same can be said about Story, who also has a tendency to swing aggressively, but he is an elite runner who could potentially play center field well if he's willing to change positions. An elbow injury, however, is a concern. Suzuki may be the real prize, given his very modeset predicted contract and the potential to be an impact bat. Ben thinks Suzuki, Schwarber and Conforto represent the best potential fits for the SF Giants. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Carlos Rodón, Carlos Martínez, and Jakob Junis are San Francisco Giants. When the lockout ended, the Giants' pitching staff looked solid, but lacked a front-line arm to pair with Logan Webb. Rodón fills that void, as he has the upside of a true ace. With a starting five seemingly in place, it was still a group that looked particularly vulnerable to potential injuries. Enter Martínez and Junis, who represent a nice secondary layer of depth. This is how the Giants built out their staff last season, and it worked exceptionally well. Now that the starting staff looks well equipped, with Webb, Rodón, Anthony DeSclafani, Alex Wood, and Alex Cobb leading the group (a couple more additions may be necessary), the Giants can turn their attention to the position-player segment of the market. Several very good option remain: Carlos Correa, Freddie Freeman, Trevor Story, Seiya Suzuki, Nick Castellanos, Kyle Schwarber, Kris Bryant, Tommy Pham, and Michael Conforto among them. Ben thinks there's a pretty good chance at least one of those players is wearing an SF Giants uniform in 2022. Finally, Ben looks at the Giants' under-the-radar pickup of José Godoy off waivers. Godoy becomes the Giants' third catcher on the 40-man roster, an important position to be in behind the unproven Joey Bart and veteran Curt Casali. If there's an injury or if Bart struggles, the Giants will need to rely on their next-in-line catchers, an area in which they were lacking after everyone moved up on the depth chart following Buster Posey's somewhat unexpected retirement.
